GROUPS AND/OR FACTIONS
Members can create groups and factions in JvS which have and give a variety of benefits. Groups and Factions are especially helpful when organizing large storylines and other macro RP plots. The number of default members in a group helps determine a faction's benefits. Because of this, each member's character accounts may only have one group listed as their default. The name of the group they choose will appear underneath the Display Name of the account in the forums and on their profile.
Below are examples of an account that has both joined a group and selected it as its default group.
Usergroup or Faction?
Usergroups and Factions both utilize the same member group system by Proboards, but they can mean separate things. A Usergroup can be a collection of members who simply write together. A Faction is a usergroup that has interactions In-Universe, and is subject to the rules and benefits of Faction-hood.
These terms can be interchangeable, but if a Usergroup does not have an In-Universe presence, it will not be granted a Headquarters or any other Faction benefits. Instead, please utilize the Writing Groups or Storyline Planning boards as a hub for planning and interacting with your membership. Factions may also create a Writing Group and Story Planning thread.
How to Request a Usergroup/Faction
Step 1. Create Your Group Unofficially.
You need to have a group of players that this usergroup/faction will represent. It is the wrong thing to do to create a group and then try to fill it. If possible, have your group ready before you request it.
Step 2. Request it Here.
Create a new thread with the name of your Usergroup/Faction as the title in order to easily identify your request. You must also fill in the following information about your group:
Here is an Example of a Completed Faction Request
Step 3. Get Other Members To Post The Same Request
Three separate members, including the first requester, all from different IP addresses, should post identical information. Also, all three "founding" members must be willing to set the group as their default. Your group will not be created until these are met.
HOW TO JOIN A GROUP:
If a usergroup's joinable status is Open or Petition, to join them go to your profile under the Group tag and select a group to either join or request to join. If the group is set to Open, you will immediately become a member of that group. If the group is set to Petition, a group leader must accept your request to join. If the group is Private it will not appear on the list of groups listed, and you will have to be added manually by a leader of the group.
Click on the Groups tab on your profile to see a list of the current joinable (Open and Petition) usergroups/factions.
GROUP LEADERS:
Groups may have multiple leaders. The names of the group leaders must be included in the group request in the appropriate thread. Requests of this nature made after the creation of the group, or in a separate request before the creation of the group, will be considered low-priority, and may take some time before they are processed. It is the responsibility of a group's leader to approve member requests, approve guest requests, and moderate their group's boards. Group leaders are required to ensure that their members are acting in accordance with the rules (both the Natural Laws and Terms and Services). Should a group's members be found to be consistently violating these rules, the group will be issued a warning in a PM to their leader(s), as well as to the offender(s). If the problem is not rectified in a timely manner, the group may be dissolved at the discretion of the Whills.
BENEFITS OF FACTIONS:
Fleet Bonuses are awarded to a faction determined by the number of accounts from unique IP addresses that have set that faction as their default usergroup. We apologize to those of you who have multiple JvS players in your household, but this is the only way to help ensure that players with multiple accounts do not have an unfair advantage. For further information and rules for alt accounts, please read the guidelines regarding their use here.
By default, any Faction bonuses will be under the command of the faction leader(s). However, any member of the faction may command these bonuses provided there has been a written exchange of the change of command in character, not OOC, during which only that member may write/command the faction ship(s) in question until control is returned to the faction's leader or another faction member.
Once a faction has been approved and is established, they have the option of having a headquarters added to the planet of their choosing. This is a completely optional decision to make, and can be done at a later date than when the faction is created. This headquarters, along with its sub-forums, will be created and moderated by the faction's leader and will be a permissions-restricted forum that only members of that faction can post in, unless requested otherwise.

Create a new thread with the name of your Usergroup/Faction as the title in order to easily identify your request. You must also fill in the following information about your group:
Group/Faction Name: (What is your usergroup and/or faction called?)
Group/Faction Description: (One or two sentences summarizing what your Usergroup/Faction stands for, who it represents, what their goals are, etc.)
Group/Faction Leader(s): (Link member profiles of nominated leaders. Agree upon this before submitting faction/usergroup requests)
Join Type: (Options are: Open- everyone can join, Petition- everyone can request to join, Private- members must be manually added by group leaders)
Group/Faction HQ
Name of the HQ: (What your headquarters is called)
Planet and part of planet where the HQ will be located: (link the planet, as well as the board/sub-board you with the HQ to be located within. If these link locations are the same, specify the board/thread layout you want the HQ to be located within)
HQ Posting Permissions:
Open - Only Faction (group) members are able to create new threads, and all site members able to post on threads already made inside the HQ.
Closed - Faction (group) members are able to create new threads, and can post on already created ones. Members not in the usergroup can see and read what is inside the forum, but cannot post inside the HQ.
Miscellaneous Info: If there is any move relevant information that we should be aware of when reviewing your Usergroup/Faction request, put it here.
If the yellow fields are not filled in, your request will not be dealt with. If your faction does not legitimately control a planet/location to allow the creation of an HQ, it can always be requested at a later date here.
