State of the Galaxy

It's a good idea, and we've discussed concepts like it many times.

Unfortunately, the devil is in the details: who updates it, and how do they get their information? We used to have the HoloNet News, which was run on a volunteer basis to provide periodic updates about major and minor events in the galaxy, but it fell into inactivity both because people stopped providing news reports for inclusion, and because the remaining staff ran out of time and interest.

Perhaps a less detailed approach would work better, but it would still require either a) someone to know and keep up with all the major events or the participants of each major event to provide regular updates. And then we would need someone to manage those updates (which could be a Whill but probably shouldn't be).

I am certainly open to pursuing this, but I guess the TL;DR is we need player cooperation and input to make it happen, because the Whills don't know everything that happens or what is most active/relevant.

(Re-activating the HNN is also an option if anyone is interested)

I'd be happy to support bringing back the HNN, provided we had enough interested people who could consistently put in reports. Maybe instead of a once a month thing, like each month has its own thread and anything handed in during that month is posted in that thread. So during any given month you might have like a half dozen reports that came out on various days, based purely on when a story is finished (as opposed to having to adhere to a strict deadline).

I think you are on the right track, The HNN. That's a great idea. I came here to follow up with something similar, and I see you beat me to it!

Re-opening the HNN but making the format more self-service would solve the activity problem we had before. The HNN staff wouldn't feel pressured to create the news themselves. Instead, each major faction could designate a few players as spokespeople, and then their responsibility would be to contribute a report every so often (let's say at least every 2 months, and no more often than every 2 weeks) that provides an outline of major activity, both from an OOC perspective (to aid RP Planning) and from an IC perspective (what characters might be able to learn IC as public knowledge).

Indeed. The other bonus, is that for the most part, it is relatively low maintenance too. Essentially just a new thread each month, and then people can make their update posts, and every now and again there could be some like... editorial article type things.

but yeah, going off what Dante said, essentially the HNN area would just be the medium through which the various 'channels' operate, with people being able to use the IC portion as a means for spreading propoganda if people are so inclined...

just so I know if this is worthwhile following up with and working on implementing, could I just get a show of interest, either here or via PM, what ever works for you.
If there is enough initial interest, I will begin fleshing the idea out a little more and get in contact with various faction leaders and go about getting it all set up.
But like I said, only if there is enough interest to get things going to begin with. There would also be a handful of staff positions to help keep things running and check over articles so that nothing gets too out of hand, so possibly something worth mentioning in a PM if you are interested in doing.
