In the Deep recesses of the Unknown region, Millions of Parsecs away from the nearest known planet, an anomalous Nebular cloud appeared. when the cloud had reached its Apex, it was as large as the Impossible ships the were known at one point within the galaxy. If anyone had observed the cloud, they may have reported massive billowed sails, which all to quickly receded into the cloud.
What was unknown to any observer outside the cloud, was that the Cloud was in fact a living ship, protecting itself and a wound it had created while also choosing a form to correspond with the whims of the universe.
…and somewhere within the cloud, I sat on what had been the deck of the ship’s former form, a Galleon.
“I am home. though not without its effects on me. Thirty years have passed for me without this universe aging a month. and that entire time I have had few longer standing companions than you.”
Unbeknownst to me, a second gentleman scurried onto the deck, to the deck. after Draping a throw Blanket around my shoulders attempted to guide me inside.
“Father, there is no safe air for you to breath out here… we must get you down below to your cabin while the ship finalizes its form for this universe.”
“Do not worry Koern, I trust the Dante’s Asylum with my life, and she has never left me to die… I never told you how I came to captain this ship.”
“So, why have we returned father?”
I stared at my son for a moment, and I marveled at how much he has grown. I steeled myself that this decision was the correct one for the sake of all that it affected.
“I still have commitments here. There is an old friend of mine that I once abandoned… I need to find them. And those that worship the Order of the Light, they have lost their way, it is my time to bring a light to their darkness.”
“so… you are leaving the ship?”
“I am leaving her in the Most capable hands that I could hope for.” I pull a small Hexagonal crystal and toss it to my son. “I have conferred with The Asylum, and we believe there is no one more prepared to take over from me.. than you. I will take the Yacht that is stored down below and make use while I re-establish myself in the universe…”
“but that is barely a Cutter, how could that ship help you in a million miles from nowhere?”
“m’boy, the Asylum does not simply change her desktop… she changes all the Assets she actively controls. the Yacht will serve me well for long enough for the Ship I commissioned in another reality to be finished and delivered.”
“then How will I find you if I came to ensure that no one knows of the Asylum’s might?”
I raised my head into the particulate cloud. for the first time in several minutes I glanced around the Deck, and I found that it was less wooden and More Imperially Sterile than before. grasping my hands closed I forged the particulates into totems, a coin and another hexagonal crystal like the one I had passed to my son not long ago
“Alway trust the Asylum. she knows how to recognize her own. Now let us be moving… if we dawdle for too much longer when you return in a matter of weeks, I will have missed 4 of your birthdays from the truest stream.”
And so, not a single word of protest as we proceeded down into the depths of the ship. to the armory where I retrieved my weapons and my improved Armor cloak. and as I pulled my Mask up into place under my cowl I marveled at how long it would be before I willingly removed it to reveal this face… my new face. finally, as I payed my last good byes for now, one last request was made
“Please father… Take Quoward with you until I return. he has master the Heaven’s wind… and your body is not yet fully healed from… the procedure.”
I shook my head, I knew that even with another Master Artificer in my numbers, the rules of this reality forbade the use of the Heaven’s wind, and as such any pains I went through, I would merely have to suffer until I was whole. with my final good byes out of the way, I bade him stand outside of the hangar as I boarded the Yacht and departed the hangar for a familiar location somewhere on a planet that received far too much appreciation by volume for any claim of deed it seemed to accomplish.
