On the note of royalty, in any given royal family, the eldest sibling (son usually) would be the next in line for succession. Though with the Queen Mother variance, the eldest daughter would be the first in line. Then, when she is ready to be married, she brings the best suitor in as the King (a figure head really) and ascends the throne of Queen Mother. While all of her other siblings remain princes and princesses (conceivably an innumerable amount). When the ascension happens, that is when the shuffling begins. The King exerts his influence on the Queen to bring in his family members to trusted places in the hierarchy, and the young Queen Mother uses her legitimate power to do the same for her and her husband (advisorships, Dukes and Duchesses which are usually close cousins or something-- or even younger siblings doubling up titles).
So, to answer the question directly, the number of princesses could depend on the number of siblings the Queen Mother has.

After a few generations, you could easily have second/third/etc cousins who are royalty, yet not in any direct line to the throne (barring a massacre).
Just look at the British royal family.

Don't look too closely though, some of our royals are a bit on the ugly side. They're not all Wills and Kate, you know...
Plu has a point, though. Easy enough to have generations of cousins who are princesses but never shall they be queen. I present to you: HRH Princess Alexandra. Cousin to the current Queen, born into the royal line in 1936. She is 42nd in the line of succession. 42nd. And she's about to become 43rd, just as soon as Kate gives birth.

From Serenno. When I mean "recalled" I mean assassinated. The Court of Counts tried to retaliate but fell apart because of in-fighting. So he's still there. So there is another corrupt Senator for Crom'nen and BP to work with really serious moral discretion. xD Just never had the time to check with the rest to make sure they were cool with it. He's a citizen of the planet so he's legit. For someone put in place through illegal means that is.
