I'm sure this topic has been raised to many of your concerns in the past but something needs to be done if we want to see Jedi vs Sith an active role playing site in the future. Our numbers have been decreasing and soon we'll need to do something about getting new writers to join the site. I'm up for discussion, and am interested in doing something about this if anyone is.

You aren't alone. There's an informal group of us that have been talking about this very issue via PM's - and our concern is that this issue isn't receiving the attention it deserves. HUGE names have left the site recently, Adrien and Sinistra specifically, and quite frankly, I don't see new names coming to fill the ranks. Additionally, looking at our active membership and comparing it to other SW RPing sites, we are undeniably a DYING website. This is just further compounded by the fact that many of us have multiple profiles...the TRUE active member base here is probably (I say probably, as only a moderator can verify this for sure) much lower than what the "last active per 24 hours" ratio would indicate. There are sites out there with THOUSANDS of members. Active members. We're down to...what, fifty? Probably even less.
I'm not alone in this thinking. I know several names, Xeonon Solomon the High Councilor, and Vastoral a member of the "Old Guard" like myself, all share these concerns and have been discussing this very notion. This goes through more than just getting new writers here though...we need to overhaul this site in how it gets writers here. We need things in place that gets the writers here, and then KEEPS them here.
It's reassuring that someone outside of our informal group also echoes our thoughts.

As Dante said you are not alone in this thought. Some of us have been talking looking for ways to act. Although it has not been announced as of last night Whill Chill added a button that allows us to share our posts on social media websites. Will this help? It is possible, seeing as our roots lay in Facebook. But there needs to be more than just a passive approach to this site. We have a member base of 1,000 members , now granted some (okay probably a lot) are alts of people if we look at two random sites... RPnation has 900 active members per 24 hours. Rpol.net has an ACTIVE member base of 2,000 members. Now that is a huge difference of 850 different active members on the smaller number. What we need quite simply is a way to reach out to people who are star wars nerds, and might possibly be willing to RP. Speaking from experience I used the old app for nearly a year before making the shift to 1.5. You know what made me stay? Friendliness in the chat. There is a reason I have the Solomon surname and thats because Gabe reached out and talked to me. Made me want to stay. Now we have a dedicated chat compliments of the Whills here and there is always the few people left from that initiative to talk to the new players started just before the crash. It helps, there are two new names in there in the past couple days but both are returning players (albeit from before my time if things are understood). So the simplest thing to do is reaching out to people you know. I dont, but people do go out to other sites, lets steal them away. Or at least mention this site to any like minded people there. I made a board on reddit I think where people are looking for Roleplay. What this page should be dedicated to is not how it got this way, how to get back to the glory days but how to get on and make THIS a second golden age. Ideas how to get new players/writers. Ideas that will spark conversations and ideas that will change how this site looks. More importantly we need action.

Valstrol speaking here, one of the "Old Guards" Dante mentioned.
I remember the hayday of JvS 1.0 and 1.5. It was like a wildfire in 1.0 with 1.5 being a tamed bonfire. Wherever you looked, wherever your character was, there was something going on. There was a range of stuff going on; a group of vets scheming to form a nation or start a great war, a couple newbies learning the ropes, maybe even a mixed group of vets and newbies. Bottom line, there was always something going on. I remember, in JvS 1.0, I had surfaced of Korriban and found a Sith comrade instantly. I moved to Dxun where an early Mandalorian-Sith War almost happened. I moved to Alzoc III where I met my comrade Chowda and conquered the world in the name of the Sith. Within the next day, an assassination attempted upon my life that made a whole storyline and, by the end of my first month, I was almost elected to be the first Mand'alor of the JvS Universe (but good old Cassus got it instead). Slowly faces started vanishing, people I had been associated since 1.0 (Mendacious, Cygnus, Malum, Raven, and others). Its sad to see this place slowly die as good and longstanding names go off.
I know what it is like to have a low playerbase. I am a moderator for another small RPG area on the Total War Center Forums. When I first joined it back in...2010, there were rps and people everywhere. Now, its barely surviving. A lot of the old faces are gone with very few new ones to replace those who have left. We have just gotten our first roleplay setting completed and started in almost half a year.
I am up for discussion and idea sharing in terms of how to regain our losses.

The problem has the attention of the Whills, and we have a number of ideas. But our ranks have been hurt by attrition just like everyone else, and it takes us longer to act on them. I can't speak for the other Whills, but I personally did not have any time for the site all summer. Now I am back. You've already seen some tweaks around here, and more are on the way. We will also be taking a new look at marketing/advertising opportunities. If any of you have suggestions in that area, please pass them along. :^)
Yes, there have been some well known names who have departed recently -- but other well known names have returned, with less attention.

The APP on facebook needs to become a viable source of APP like stuff again. Perhaps adding the quizzes and maybe some cool mini games would be cool. App development has come a long way since 07.
When this site lost the facebook portion of it, it lost it's ability to easily recruit new members. Re-boot it, pay a small price for some adds and make it cool, as cool as nerds can be that is.
Just my two cents.

I'm a old guard.
I'm still here. No plans on going anywhere.
Last time I checked, best way to gain writers was to speak, in person, to people you know who are like-minded, and talk up the site and the writing to them. I have a tabletop RP group who are all SW fans on some level, and two are fiction writers in their spare time. Not sure if they're specifically SW fiction writers, but birds of a feather, right? I've already laid the ground work. "Hey, come check out this badass story I was part of -- here's the link, etc." I've had FB conversations with a few writers who I've been urging to join up, to 'flex their creative muscles' as it were...
Real, honest-to-God live people. Maybe that's only one PC each, but I'm sure I have a few joining up. Try the analog method. It works.
GF
p.s. / edit: Dante -- I think this is one of the issues. Why an 'informal group' at all? This needs to be site-wide. Our creative energies are at stake here. Everyone on this site should be actively soliciting for new membership. Hell, I'll even donate when my next paycheque comes in. Never done that before, but it's got to help, right?

Now, PLEASE do not misunderstand - you guys do GREAT work running a site that gets you no pay and is basically a volunteer job. Hell, I've been a Whill equivalent on a different site and I KNOW how tough it gets. That said though, it is that slowness to act that has more than a few of us worried...we feel that too little will be done before we reach a point of not being able to turn our membership around. This has, after all, been a persistent issue through the various incarnations of our dear site for a number of years - membership wise I mean. And, the slowness of the Whills has also been a persistent factor when dealing with this particular problem. That all said, I'm not a dullard who just sits around and points fingers at problems without asking how to fix them. The best I can do is make what worries I have known, and then offer any help I can. My worries being made known now, a few questions: 1) As I understand it, you Whill CHill are the go to guy for the membership problem? I guess what I'm asking is, is there a particular face among the Whills who is spear heading this effort? 2) You say marketing and advertising...to clarify, that is FREE advertising/marketing? Clarifying that we're trying not to spend money here. 3) It SEEMS to me (seems = been here a LONG time, could be mistaken) that we had on an old incarnation of the site some kind of advertising dealing with other sites and such...any possibility of reviving that? 4) For general knowledge, do we have FB and Twitter accounts for the site? Do we have a hashtag we can use? Do we have any kind of social media presence? p.s. / edit: Dante -- I think this is one of the issues. Why an 'informal group' at all? This needs to be site-wide. Never done that before, but it's got to help, right? Eh, you misunderstand. Our informal group hasn't really been a group but for barely a week. We were in the process of discussing how to go about things when Revlan made this thread and we decided to just jump on the band wagon as it were. From the very start, the idea was to do exactly that - get the public creative juices flowing and get others opinions out there.

Just my two cents. VERY sorry to double post. I'm on my Iphone and it's easier to write things up in segments. Besides the fact, I think this idea has a LOT of merit. I mean, we never had a shortage of members on the original FB app did we? Whether that was due to the atmosphere of the app, or due to its nature as being so closely linked to a social media outlet, who is to say. I would bet money its the latter though. Is there a way to make a FB app - kinda like an old version of the site and how it used to be - like, something of a feeder to this site here? I havent dealt with FB and its apps before, so I don't know what is involved...but I think Arty here is on to something...I mean, face book has more than enough recruiting power right? Why not go back to our roots in some form or another? It's potentially profitable, and free.

And, the slowness of the Whills has also been a persistent factor when dealing with this particular problem. That's a fair response. I just wanted to clarify that it DOES have our attention, even if we haven't found a lot of time or ways to improve the situation yet. Obviously, it doesn't do any good for us to pay attention, unless we are able to act. That all said, I'm not a dullard who just sits around and points fingers at problems without asking how to fix them. The best I can do is make what worries I have known, and then offer any help I can. I guess what I'm asking is, is there a particular face among the Whills who is spear heading this effort? Unofficially, yes. We haven't tasked anyone in specific to deal with the issue, but I am gathering ideas to discuss with my brothers and sisters. 2) You say marketing and advertising...to clarify, that is FREE advertising/marketing? Clarifying that we're trying not to spend money here. There are a number of free options that we can take. If those don't work, spending a few dollars isn't out of the question. We've had a number of people offer to donate. But we would not spend money on advertizing without very careful consideration. 3) It SEEMS to me (seems = been here a LONG time, could be mistaken) that we had on an old incarnation of the site some kind of advertising dealing with other sites and such...any possibility of reviving that? Yes. That is one possibility under consideration. 4) For general knowledge, do we have FB and Twitter accounts for the site? Do we have a hashtag we can use? Do we have any kind of social media presence? Yes. We have been conducting a revamp of our social media presences. You can follow us on Twitter @jedivsith, and a more complete announcement about social media is coming in a few days. I think this thread is a great start. You've already given me several new ideas - and they weren't even ones that anyone directly stated.

I swear if I have to correctly identify the color of Mace Windu's lightsaber, I will murder a small defenseless woodland critter. ...in all seriousness though, if we were to make some kind of FB app or redo one that's on there already, then how would we go about it? What would be on the app/how would it work?

Facebook apps aren't actually free. You have to pay for the server to run them on, and that cost was one of the reasons the plug was pulled on the old app.
My personal impression is that the era of Facebook apps has somewhat passed, but maybe I'm wrong/getting old. Do people still use them?

@ Atton: Firstly, cool profile pic. Secondly, I just assumed we would do some kind of something similar to the old JvS app. Maybe some kind of scaled down version of our site here. You know, like one of those marketing gimmicks: free version has this, upgrade to the full site for 9.95...In our case I would assume (seriously spitballing here) that we could use an old forum app as a kind of "soft" intro to forum based RPing...limited writing capabilities, limited worlds, kinda a newbie training ground, etcetera. Meanwhile we sponsor the full site, urging people to make the move from the app to the full site because of the expanded places to write, and the larger community. Thats just my fifty cents in change though, and I'm sure there are betters ways to go about it.
@ CHill: First of all, why do I always capitalize the "H" in your name? I guess I hold down the shift for too long. Secondly...damn...I thought the app was free. That's kind of disheartening as far as a potential resource goes. As far as your impression...meh, I'd say App's get some moderate use. It HAS been a while since we used it in...what, 2007? So traffic flow might be different. Generally though anything thats connected to millions of people, and that automatically gets suggested to them based on their interest is a good thing though. Then again, that's just MY impression as well. Thanks for answering my questions by the way - I'll mull them over and see if I can input something useful later on.

What about twitter? Ya know there is a new movie coming out in a year, start retweeting posts from the new movie, get people from the site who have that social outlet to re-tweet it. Follow JJ Abrams, Mark Hamil, H Ford if they got one and start tweeting to or on their page. SW fans will see it and wonde what it is, provide a link in the profile and you might get some new recruits.

Twitter might be a good idea. There's a million Star Wars fans out there, probably with the itch to write as well. We just have to find them!

Social media is covered on both Facebook and twitter. Chill gave out the link for twitter. I have an unofficial page for Jedi Vs Sith that I moderate. Put on things about the site, random star wars posts. In addition the official one although rather underutilized (in one mans opinion) has seem use more this year.
Although apps do sound out of the running, children and parents (in my experience women from my requests so mothers) send out so many requests and try new silly games all the time.

As announce elsewhere, the official Facebook page at www.facebook.com/jedivsith is back up and running. And to be clear, I don't intend for it to replace the fan/community page that Xeonon created. There's room for both to exist. :^)

I'm always up for some advertising myself whether it be a donation or some online advertising. I know someone on YouTube that has somewhat of a audience and we've given each other shoutouts in the past, I'm sure i can pull something off. With 700 subs even if 10 of them joined the site that would be excellent.
I think i already know the answer to this one but would reaching out to other role playing sites be out of the question?
