Hey guys,
I can't imagine there are too many of us out there in JvS -- Ade's crew, and the Fel crew, really.
I'm just going to put this out there, 'cause it came into my head tonight in chat, and that wasn't the place to discuss it, mostly because the folks who need to discuss it -- us -- weren't there.
I know each crew has lots of stories going on, and that's good, it fills this site with (IMO) some of the best writing this (dark) side of Coruscant. You know I think everyone involved with the smuggler crews are excellent writers, and I respect all that you've brought to the table over the years.
BUT.
I'm wondering -- how much actual 'smuggling' have we been doing? We're pretty caught up in our own stories, how often are we accessible by the rest of the site, who just need someone to move item X from point a to point b? How much site-wide interaction has there been recently? When was the last time a Jedi faction hired a transport ship?
Way I see it, we are the characters that bind this site together. Everyone should have need of our very basic services. And even with our wider story arcs, how can we make ourselves available to actually do some IC smuggling?
That -- I'm not entirely sure of. Our own SL's are important. I think all of us are interested in PC development and long-term arcs. But the short term stuff where we can be of service to the rest of the site is important too. Split timelines? NPC crews?
Who's got other ideas?

Been thinking about this, too, actually. I was reading over some old saved stuff from the old JvS, and came across some actual jobs the Fel crew had done, and I was like, "...Oh, right, the smuggling part of being a smuggler. Where is that now?" I think you're right. We need to make ourselves available for that. The biggest issue I see in the way is the activity levels of the crew. Honestly, when you have more than two writers in a group that live in different parts of the world and have vastly different schedules, it's hard enough trying to sync posts and keep things going on a personal story-arc level. But if we're gonna call ourselves smugglers, we better smuggle every once in a while, IC. So. Solutions. Feel free to shoot down. --...was going to suggest something in JotW, but now I realize that doesn't make sense, so moving on. --Easiest thing would probably be a split-timeline. But we could modify that. We could steal the SWTOR design. When someone needs a simple job done (because, let's face it, RPing your own NPC smuggler crew is just boring, and building actual IC relationships is important to stave off website-wide stagnation), instead of sending all seven crew members, we choose ONE or two crew members who are active and able to get it done in a short amount of time, and we send them on said mission. They get it done in a few good posts, and return easy-like. I think one of the biggest issues with doing legit smuggling jobs on the old website was that we all went as a team, and it fell apart because of the mass. While it's way more fun to do it as a team, it's not logical in OOC time. --We COULD use NPCs. But I don't like this option. Unless it's a long-standing NPC with serious pull in the arcs of the PC crew, there are no connections formed, and the writer-in-need-of-smuggler might as well do it themselves. I think it's an option for the back burner, in case there really cannot be a split timeline. --Oops, thought I had more ideas. Well is dry for now. 'Lora

Hmmmmm.
Good point. Very good point. I'd like to think that the Fel Crew is close to needing a new job, anyway...

I'd like to think that the Fel Crew is close to needing a new job, anyway... We have exactly four and a half tubes of protein paste, a gallon of blue milk, some three-month old leftovers from that high-brow party we had to infiltrate on Ord Mantell, something that looks like yogurt but I can't be sure, and a box of Bantha broccoli bars at the back of the freezer. New job means actual credits. We're not close, we're past.

Most expedient, best use of resources, allows PCs to establish their own contacts, and likely allows for some interesting new sl's down the road.

We're actually in the middle of a legit smuggling job, hired by Juvex Imports/Exports. Thought we were moving spice, got slaves instead. And we're getting paid. I've even got a few passengers paying for rooms. Well I guess you already knew all that.
But I've got an idea and as soon as I get some extra time I'll write it up and post it here.

Well there are three crews, just mine is still forming. Most of that has been my fought of late though, as I have been at a loss for words (you know how that sometimes happens). But yeah, Fel, I'd love to see more basic smuggling around the site. I hope to take my crew in that direction, but I'll need to set up some jobs and what not for that to begin. Count the Renegade in on whatever comes up down the road. Well, at least count me in; I can't exactly make promises on behalf of the rest of my crew.

Alright so the idea is fairly simple, something akin to the bounty postings but more hands on. Now bear with me because I'm writing this on my phone.
Places like Nar Shaddaa and the Smugglers Run have gone largely unused since leaving the old site. With this idea I'd like to correct that problem. Smugglers typically get their jobs from crime bosses, which are sorely lacking on this site, another thing I would like to correct.
What I suggest is possibly setting up shop for a middle man. This person or group would do the leg work of finding the jobs and offering them to available crews or crews best suited for such a job. Whether the jobs are made up or provided by a PC would make no difference because there isn't a currency tracking system in place (which sounds like a power gaming move I know but just hear me out).
For example, our guy says there is a shipment of spice to pick up at location, let's say Kessel, and it needs moved to second location, let's say Corellia, for distribution. Weight of shipment, destination, and payout are said in all cases, maybe some other information we can go over later, what the cargo is would be optional info of course. We do the job, get paid if we make it there, and the wheels keep turning in the world of JvS.
The big difference between this and the bounties is that this would all be done IC through personal channels. The clients remain anonymous unless they would otherwise want to be named and we still get the jobs we want.
If you like the idea or at least like where it's going I'll work it out with you guys once I get some time, probably tomorrow.

I would like to sign on with this idea. I'm always having to do the legwork of moving cargo and other goodies around by myself using NPCs.
I mainly do it this way for expediency's sake, but if there are active smuggler players looking for stuff to do, I am happy to pay credits and hire crews to move things. We can make it interesting, cargos go missing, others are not what was advertised, etc. Fun and Games!
I love the idea of a bounty board type system where clients and vendors can advertise and organise to meet up IC.

I would definitely have employment opportunities for this type of arrangement on occasion. I usually don't bother hiring a PC smuggler because the SL takes too long.

If you require someone to play the middleman IC, Xinzon and associates would be more than willing. He already owns a galaxy-wide shipping business and has been expanding that to include contracts with the less reputable captains (such as one Galdaart Fel). I'd be happy to include both Draykon and Hammand in my enterprise, as well as be the contact point for those in possession of goods that need shipping. Now I wouldn't be going out and looking for these jobs myself, as I'm a full-time college student with a part time job (and as such lack the time), but we could easily set up a thread where shippers can convey their needs. From there we can set up a couple IC posts of their representative speaking to my representative, then my representative handing off the job to a PC crew. Short and sweet, and it ties things together in a way that simply using generic NPC middlemen would be unable to do. Plus I get to build contacts and make money.

I guess I'm giving this a little bump because I'd like to see my smuggler friends make a comeback in the galaxy. I'm still catching up on the work you guys are doing, seeing as I've been kinda absentee from the site for a while. I'm just wondering if you guys feel like you're getting any further along in this plan than when you began...and if not, I'd like to see if you guys are maybe thinking about doing something crazy, say, like jumping in on the Rebel Alliance's SL a little later down the line.
I really hope you guys are all doing well. I apologize if it seems like I'm trying to wrangle you guys into something; I just want to bring us back to the forefront, make us look pretty in front of all the galaxy. Bright, shiny smugglers that people can use to suit their purposes, and we get paid lots and lots of credits...
Pipe dreams, to be sure...but we've all chased 'em.
BTW, I'm loving the ideas that you guys came up with here. It sounds fantastic!
