Castle grabbed his bag and followed Rianon up the driveway. He had expected fancy, but this was above and beyond what he had been expecting.
Castle was no stranger to wealth and luxury. As a young boy, he had relatives who were very wealthy. And they had always liked the pomp and show that went with being stupidly wealthy. Castle himself didn't really care for that part of it. The money was nice, but it wasn't the only thing that mattered. His extended family practically had disowned him when he hopped on his first tramp freighter and left Corellia.
Castle's attention was taken from his inner musings and pulled to the massive fountain.
It truly was a sight to behold. As they approached the front doors, Castle started to feel out of place. Shadow Manor was too clean and had that high society feel to it. He was by no means the dregs of society, however he didn't feel like he fit into the higher echelons of Corellia's elite.
Castle acknowledged the introduction to Cheri Lacroix with a brief nod as he marveled at the vast sparkling splendor of the Manor. He noticed Rianon set her bags down and made her way to the door on the right. Castle set his bag beside her's and made his way after her.

Rianon walked over to a plush couch and sat down, gesturing for Johnathan to do the same. She noticed that he had become rather quiet.
"I know that this isn't the kind of place that you're used to. Or that you feel comfortable in. But I wanted you to see where I grew up. I lived here until I was sixteen. That's when my parents died and I got a little lost. I ran. As far and as fast as I could. I was in a few bad places along the way, including a slave ship. I was badly beaten daily for a year. You've probably wondered why I wear corsets and long skirts all the time. My lower back and my legs are covered in scars from my time on the slave ship. Thankfully I was seen tending to another slave by an officer on a cruise ship. He found out who I really was and had me instated as a medical officer on the ship while I healed."
She got up and walked over to the fireplace. Hanging above it were a couple of paintings.
"My Father was very traditional in his decor. He liked the look of real paintings. So I spent hours posing for this one."
She pointed to the painting on the left. The portrait was of her at fifteen sitting in a throne-like chair in a blood red dress. In her left hand was a book and her right hand held a small knife.
"I still have that knife. My Father gave it to me for sitting for the painting. He said the portrait was to remind me that I could be beautiful, accomplished and deadly. I could be anything I wanted to be. I would have loved for him to see what I became."
She pointed to the painting on the left. It showed Rianon at twenty-two embracing a dark-haired man of twenty-five, holding a baby girl between them.
"This is Malak Crowley, my husband. I met him on the cruise ship. And that is our daughter, Alorra. The two of them died a year after this portrait was completed. Shortly after that I need up on Serenity. I've been running away. But after a year on the ship, I needed to come home and face my demons. And my brother-in-law has been harassing my for months to complete the transfer of Ellesmere Hall to him. Ellesmere Hall was where Malak and I lived after we were married. After they died I moved back here. I couldn't be in that house. And if you think this house is grand, you should have seen the Hall. I was scared that I would dirty something. It was always immaculate. A little creepy to be honest."
She watched Johnathan as she finished speaking.
"I know that I've probably just overloaded you with information, but I need to know what you're thinking."
Rianon was scared that divulging her past could have just driven a wedge between them. She wanted the complete opposite. She was sincerely hoping that her opening up to him like this would show him that she trusted him completely. She had been seriously hurt before, but it seemed that her battered heart was willing to try again.

Castle sat down on the plush couch next to Rianon, feeling overwhelmed with everything that had transpired up until now.
Up until this point in time, he had thought he had figured Rianon out. Maybe not completely, but he thought he had figured out more than was being told to him now. She certainly wasn't what he had expected. She was so much more then he could have ever imagined. He'd seen her on Serenity being upset, mad, confused, lost and angry. He had also seen her be happy and content. And then the truly rare sight, he had seen her determined and focused. Mind you, having been patched up by her several times and more often than any other crew member, he witnessed that side of her more often then anyone else.
He listened intently as she spoke, taking in her tone and her body language. The way her eyes glanced at him and darted up at the paintings, looking at them longingly, as if she wanted to relive the moments permanently captured in those moments. But that wasn't who she was now, and she knew it. So did he. She was nothing like the woman in the painting with her husband and child. Sadness gripped his heart as she spoke of them. After she finished speaking, Castle just sat on the couch, formulating his response carefully. If he spoke to harshly or critically, he would break her down. If he spoke to delicately and tenderly, she would see him in a different light. He needed to mix the two possibilities together and see where that led him.
"You are right. I am a little overwhelmed by all of this..." He paused, unsure of whether or not he should continue. Knowing that she needed his response more than anything else at the moment was what kept him going. "I've known you for a few years now. You've patched me up more times than I care to admit. I've watched you and observed. Knowing what I have gathered and what you have just told me, I do know this one thing for certain. You aren't that person. You have overcome such adversities and become a better person. Most would take the deaths of both their parents and their family and let it break them and become bitter because of it. You haven't. I mean, everyone has their moments, but you constantly focus on the positive. You are always upbeat and you always are smiling, even when things are going sideways in a hurry. You are calm and collected in times of stress and you always are ready to help out the crew in whatever way you can."
Castle paused and stood up. He made his way over to her.
"You are a very interesting individual. More so than I ever expected. In this big galaxy of how many trillions of beings, I have managed to find someone who isn't boring. Someone who is intelligent and can laugh at my jokes. I appreciate you telling me this, I really do. It isn't easy to over come the past. And I am truly sorry that you had to endure such tragedies, but they have helped shape you into the person you are now. Perhaps in time, I will let you in on my past. I'm just not ready to let you in that deep yet. But don't be discouraged because of that. You are letting me in to a whole new level of you. That builds trust. And with enough trust and faith in someone comes the ability to confide your deepest, darkest secrets. Your father would be incredibly proud of you, so don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. Thank you for letting me in, Rianon. I promise to never break the trust you have placed in me. I will return the favor before we head back to the ship. But let's settle in here first and adjust to everything that's been said. There had been enough confiding for today..." He paused and flashed her a lopsided grin, then wrapped his arms around her. When he let her go, he grinned again. "I don't suppose you've got some beverages of the alcoholic variety around this place, do you? I could certainly use a drink right about now."
He made his way back over to the plush couch and plopped down. This conversation was border lining the touchy-feely aspect of life that Castle liked to avoid or ignore, depending on the day. He was capable of feeling deeper, but right now he just couldn't. The last person he had let in had cut him deeply. Emotionally. And in all honesty, he wasn't quite ready to let someone in again. But perhaps after eventually explaining that to Rianon, she would understand where he was coming from.

Rianon smiled at Johnathan. HE was taking this better than she had hoped.
"There is always a full beverage cart in my house. What do you want?"
She moved to the other side of the room and opened a cabinet. Inside were bottles of almost everything. She waved Johnathan over to her.
"Choose your poison. My father was always keen on hosting boisterous parties. I kept a lot of the rooms as they were. I didn't have the heart to change much after they died. But the gardens were always my favourite. There are so many flowers and manicured trees. My dad had one trimmed to look like him, only it's eight feet tall."
She grabbed a glass and poured herself some Scentwine. It had always been her favourite one to sneak as a teenager. The purple colour always intrigued her. She made her way back over to the sofa and waited for Johnathan to get his beverage from the vast array.

Castle had followed Rianon over to the cabinet of liquor. As she selected a drink, Castle perused the selection. Being a Corellian, he preferred his whiskey. Selecting a fine bottle of Corellian Whiskey, Castle dropped three cubes of ice into his glass and pour the amber liquid over the ice. He took a sip, allowing himself to feel the burn as he swallowed. There was something he hadn't had in a long time. A good Corellian whiskey. Content with his drink selection, Castle made his way over to the sofa once more.
"So, what's the game plan now? More questions and feeling our feelings, or are we going to do something different?"
Castle himself wasn't sure of what he wanted to do, but sitting in silence while they talked about feelings was starting to be a bit of a drag.
Not to be misunderstood in an way. He had indeed learned a great deal about Rianon. More than he ever would have gathered just by simple observation. And he was truly enjoying the time being spent with her. But he didn't take leave of Serenity just to feel his feelings. Perhaps she had something more planned? Perhaps not. Either way, his time with her wouldn't be wasted.

Rianon smiled. She was smiling a lot today.
"I have to meet my brother-in-law tomorrow to sign over the house, but that's it. We can do pretty much anything you want. We can tour the grounds, have an actual meal, or we could go upstairs and ...relax."
She grinned suggestively at him. She had been admiring Johnathan for months now, and was hoping to have this leave from the ship would bring them closer. In more ways than one. She took another sip of wine.
"I don't want to pry into your life if you aren't ready for it. But I am grateful that you listened to mine. So, whatever you want to do."

Castle listened to Rianon speak as he took a swig of his drink. When he heard what she had just said, he nearly choked on his drink. He swallowed his drink and tried to cover up the near spillage with a light cough.
She may not have come straight out with it, but that suggestive grin and the slight pause about going upstairs to 'relax' had totally caught him off guard. He hadn't expected her to imply something like that right off the hop, but there it was.
And then his stomach growled hungrily. It then occurred to him that he hadn't really eaten anything since they had arrived. Perhaps food was a better idea first. As much as Castle wanted to go upstairs and 'relax' with Rianon, he couldn't deny the fact that he was hungry. And that he didn't want to rush into anything too quickly. Since they had arrived on Corellia, the relationship between them had went from zero to sixty in the space of a few hours. It did feel as though things were moving forward way to quickly. And, while he did have needs of his own, he didn't want that to be the main driving factor behind why he really wanted to go upstairs.
"A meal actually sounds nice. I'm starving. Aside from the protein eaten this morning before we got here, I haven't had anything to eat since then. You must be hungry as well. Let's get some grub and then decide from there, sound good?"
Castle flashed her a grin as he took another swig from his drink. Damn, the Corellian whiskey was going down too smoothly. That could prove problematic for later, but for now, food was his main thought. Though he was sort of second guessing himself on his decision to eat first...

Rianon laughed as Johnathan's stomach growled. They hadn't eaten since they were on the ship, and she was eager to have real food.
"Food sounds great. What would you like? Eating protein and vitamin bars wears on the tastebuds after a while. Is there anything that you've been craving in the last few months? I can have Cheri come back in and take an order down to the cook."
Even though she did want to take Johnathan upstairs, food would be to their benefit. Visions of real fruit fresh from the orchard and fresh baked Custard Bread entered her mind.
Rianon's stomach grumbled as she thought about the food possibilities.
"Alright, it seems our stomachs have decided for us. What do you want to eat?"

Castle chuckled as Rianon spoke. So it wasn't a huge let down that they didn't disappear upstairs. At least that made him feel better about turning her initial offer down. And then he though on the question she had posed. What to eat? He honestly didn't have a clue. He wasn't very picky when it came to food.
"Something edible." he said, jokingly. "But in all seriousness, I really ain't that fussy. I will let the lady decide."
He tossed back his head and downed the last of his drink, before standing and motioning for Rianon to lead the way. He didn't have a single clue which way the kitchen or dining hall was. He actually didn't even remember which was was out, to be honest. So with Rianon leading the way, they would find it. And then they could sit down and enjoy some real food.

Rianon smiled and finished her wine. She got up and walked to the fireplace. She gently pulled on a cord beside the mantle. After a minute Cheri walked into the room.
"Yes, milady?"
"Tell Mrs. Baird that we would like to eat. Anything she want to prepare is fine. It doesn't have to be fancy. We've been surviving off protein and vitamin bars for the last few months. Fresh fruit would be wonderful."
Cheri curtsied and left the room. Rianon motioned for Johnathan to follow her. She walked out of the room, back the way they had come. She walked through the grand marble foyer, passed a massive staircase, and through a large door. She had decided not to use the formal dining room. Instead they were in the breakfast room. It hosted a beautiful view of the grounds and gardens, leading down to the orchards. Rianon sat at the head of the table so that she faced the windows.
"If you would prefer we can sit out on the terrace. Or we can take a walk afterwards."
She smiled again. She found herself smiling a lot around Johnathan. She could tell that he was slightly uncomfortable with the situation, and she wanted to ease some of the discomfort. In any way she could.

Castle finished his drink and followed Rianon out of the room, through the foyer passed a large staircase and through a large door. The view from the windows was astounding. As Rianon sat down, Castle found his seat. As she spoke, he listened, letting the cadence of her voice wash over him. She truly was an amazing woman. Everything about her was fascinating. After a longer then necessary pause, Castle replied to her.
"Fresh air might do us some good. Serenity's O2 scrubbers are top notch, but having the real thing will be nice. 'sides, how often do we get to be outdoors anyways? I love the outdoors, almost as much as I love fixing things. Reminds me of home. I practically lived outside. My Momma could never get me in the house for very long..."
Castle trailed off. The thought of home was odd to him. Sure, he was born a Corellian, but Corellia wasn't home to him. As far back as he could remember, he grew up with his folks on Agamar, living a simple life, farming and fixing. Never got to involved with any of the Imperial occupiers, as his family had simply kept to themselves. He cherished the memories of it, however he never really told anyone about it. Perhaps with a little more time, he would open up to Rianon about it. It might do him some good to talk about his life before he joined up with the Captain and his crew.

Rianon stood again and made her way over to the patio doors. She threw them open and took a deep breath.
"I know what you mean about wanting to be outside. My governess was always dragging me back inside to finish one lesson or another. I spent more time in that garden than I have anywhere else in my life. There's this little gazebo out in the rose garden that I always played in. I even slept in there. My father always woke me early and brought me back inside before my mother could notice. He thought it was funny. I think he was jealous, in a way, that he couldn't sleep in the garden."
She walked out onto the terrace, stopping in a patch of sunlight. The smell of blooming flowers and damp earth washed over her, carrying memories with the scents.

Castle stood and walked behind Rianon as she threw open the patio doors. The fresh air full of different fragrances hit him like a wave. Inhaling deeply and savoring it, he exhaled slowly. He followed her out and watched her stand in the sunlight. She began to glow as the sun washed over her. Her brown hair shimmered and shone in the light. Her pale complexion seemed to glow in the radiant light. And then there was her eyes. They sparkling beautifully in the sun. At that moment, she was Castle's idea of true beauty. He stepped into the patch of sunlight next to her, chuckling at her story.
"We come from very different walks of life...after a while, my Momma stopped trying to herd me back inside. I could spend days outside. Camping, fishing, hunting. You name it, I have done it at least once in my life. Always went with the old man. We made a lot of good memories. Although nothing beat working on some piece of equipment or other outside in the yard with Pops. Or herding the livestock. I lived for the outdoors when I was younger. And then, all that changed..."
Castle trailed off again, unsure as to whether or not he could continue. As now he was approaching a very touchy subject. And he didn't want to ruin the mood right now with that. He was enjoying himself and enjoying Rianon's company. There was no need to bring gloom upon them right now. There had already been enough of that for one day, at least in his opinion.

Rianon frowned slightly when Johnathan began talking. She said that she liked being outside, like he did. What was wrong with that? Her voice was a little cool when she spoke again.
"I simply meant that I also enjoy being outside. Just because I grew up here and played in a manicured garden instead of a pasture or the forest doesn't mean that my enjoyment was any less than yours."
She quickly moved away from him and walked down the short flight of steps that would bring them to a small table. Cheri would know where to bring the food. Rianon and her father ate down there often enough in her childhood. She ran her hand over the stone planter and tried to gather her thoughts. She didn't mean to snap at Johnathan, but after she had opened up to him, she had hoped that they would be closer. His comment about them coming from such different walks of life hit her hard. She had grown up pampered, but she more than made up for it in the last few years of her life. If he couldn't see that, then maybe this trip wasn't going to be what she had hoped for...

Castle watched her reaction and frowned. He had said something he shouldn't have. He waited for a few moments, then followed her down to the small table, collecting his thoughts as he did so.
"You totally took that the wrong way. I never meant it to be an insult or anything of the sort. And I never implied that you had any less enjoyments in life than I did. And obviously you made a huge change in your life, going from this to livin' with us brigands on the fringes of space. I am sorry if you took that the wrong way. You've been through your fair share of hardships as well. You wouldn't be the amazing person I've come to admire today if it weren't for your choices."
He paused, thinking quickly on how to proceed with the conversation. It was as good a time as any to let her in. Perhaps she would be more understanding once she knew the whole story.
"I was born here on Corellia, most likely in the very medical facility your family helped fund. But I don't remember any of that. I remember growing up on a ranch with my folks and siblings on Agamar. Back when I was growing up, my two older brother enlisted with the Imperials. Left home and never came back. Then word came in that they had died in the line of duty. Ma took it the hardest. The woman I once know as being so encouraging and kind broke. Pops hit the sauce. That made Ma even worse. She lost the will to live. And then the old man became a mean drunk. Abusive. All of the memories I have of growing up are before all of that. Pops left me with more than my fair share of bruises when Ma passed away. I ran away from home and haven't looked back since. I bounced around for a number of years, working as a mechanic in exchange for a room and travel from one space port to the next, until I bumped into Captain Reynolds. He offered me a true job as his mechanic. So I took it. And here I am. So don't go thinking I don't understand your life. Cuz I do. We've all gone through our own personal hell to get where we are today. Makes us stronger and smarter because of it...I ain't ever told a soul about my childhood...so now maybe we both have learned something from each other?"
And with that, Castle seated himself at the table, glaring darkly at his lap, not wanting to look up at Rianon just yet. She had opened up to him and now he had done the same to her. Hopefully this would bring a little more understanding between them. He hoped it would, at any rate. But now he was feeling vulnerable and out of place. More than anything he wanted to be fixing something. Life was so much simpler when he was busy fixing things that needed it. And being this open with Rianon wasn't easy for him, as he was sure it hadn't been easy for her. He just hoped that everything wouldn't fall apart now...

After hearing Johnathan speak Rianon wanted to kick herself. She knew that she had overreacted.
"I'm sorry for snapping at you. You saying that we come from very different walks of life sounded like a comparison. I know that you didn't mean it that way, I just get defensive when I'm here. After everything that happened to me, I don't feel worthy of this place anymore. Sometimes it seems like a dream."
She sat across from Johnathan and reached her hand toward him.
"I am grateful that you told me. Truly I am. I know how hard it is. There's only one other person who knows my story. You might get a chance to meet her while we're here. That is, if you still want to be here. Don't make any decisions until you've had Mrs. Baird's cooking. She'll do everything she can to fatten you up."
She smiled weakly at him, hoping to settle the mood back down to where it was when they walked onto the terrace.

And now Castle felt bad for making her feel guilty. His story was no worse than hers. Although, in truth, there should be no comparing. Either way it was bad. They had both been through a lot of shit in their day, it seemed. He glanced up at her as her hand touched his.
"I wasn't comparing. I am sorry if I made it seem that way. Meeting your friend sounds like fun as well. And of course I still want to be here. I'm spending time with you, away from the ship. Although I could certainly use something to do. All this sitting around allows the mind to wander far too much for my liking. But let's get back on the food track, shall we? I am starving and if you say she's a good cook, I believe you. Used to travel all over Calna Muun searching for the best slice of pie and steak."
Feeling his mood lightening, Castle shot Rianon a lopsided grin, knowing full well they'd move past this little spat quickly. After all, they were on Corellia together, in a beautiful mansion, about to be fed gourmet food. And he was still spending time with her. Which was what he wanted all along anyways...

Rianon smiled back at him. But before she could say anything heavy footfalls drew her attention to the steps. Cheri and Mrs. Baird appeared, carrying laden trays of meats, bread, cheese and fruit.
"What kind of pie do you like, young man? I'll make you one. Or three."
"Johnathan this is Mrs. Baird. Mrs. Baird this is Johnathan Castle. You had better answer her. If you don't she'll bake pies for the next three days straight until she finds your favourite."
She laughed and helped herself to some food. She waved Cheri off, but allowed Mrs. Baird to stay until Johnathan answered her pie question.

Castle marveled at the assortment of food being brought to the table. He had never seen so much food in one place before. Even family dinners during a birthday were never this grand back home. He was hungry now. But at the mention of pie, he grinned broadly."No need to ask me twice. Pie is one of my few weaknesses. I don't suppose you'd be able to make a Wasaka Berry Pie now could you? It's my all time favorite pie. I could live without a lot of things in my life, but that pie? I certainly couldn't."Castle grinned again, and began helping himself to the assortment of food adorning the table before him. He was certainly going to enjoy this. Even if Rianon's life was different from his and made him slightly uncomfortable, he could get used to the food they had, that was for certain.

Mrs. Baird chuckled at Johnathan's choice of pie.
"I'll send Tomas to town for a couple things. Wasaka berries aren't a staple around here. You'll have your pie by tomorrow, laddie. But I best be getting back to the kitchens. Until tomorrow, Milady."
Mrs. Baird bobbed a quick curtsy and rushed back toward the house.
"You do realize that she'll be making at least one of those pies a day while you're here. And they won't be small pies. I don't know if I've ever tried wasaka berry pie before. My mother preferred meals to be simple, unless she wanted to impress someone. Often we ate what you see in front of you now."
Rianon grabbed a piece of cloud bread and chewed it slowly. It had always been a favourite of hers as a child.
"Most of the fruits you see are grown here. I spent a good portion of my childhood picking fruit in the orchards. Usually when I was supposed to be in some sort of lesson. I was a very bad student, according to my governess. I think she was hoping my parents would pay her more if I was bad. I reality she was boring."
She surveyed him as she picked a few pieces of cheese off the tray.
"What would you like to do when we've finished eating? I could show you the grounds, or we could go back inside."
