The mercenary commander would have found Zariel in the royal archives, as she perused the most ancient tomes and scrolls, dating back to the time of Freedon Nadd. She looked up from one such historical work as Marsenus spoke. Very straight forward and astute. She knew that her lie of securing the boarders of the Empire to ensure no outside support could come to the rebellious factions from such a hot bed, would work on the pawns, she knew the back row pieces though, would be more perceptive. Why lie to this nothing? He held no sway within the Empire with out her, so him blabbing would sound like a wild conspiracy theories. Especially given the outlandishness with what the truth actually was.
Her gaze turned back to the book she held before speaking, flipping through it's pages lazily, to match her tone. I needed a forward base of operations to begin the next phase of my plan. Are you familiar with the Reborn Program? What am I saying, of course one like you wouldn't be. It was a program built upon the discoveries and failed expedition of one of my former colleges, Jaric. After his demise and the continual deterioration of the Remnant, members of the Remnant, namely Dark Jedi Lord Hethrir and Desann, along with Admiral Fyyar, used the fabled Valley of the Jedi to enhance the powers of those barely touched by the Force into formidable warriors. I intend to succeed where they failed. Thanks to Lotus, I now have the coordinates of the Valley itself and will soon be moving on to there. Onderon serves me in two purposes. The first, it's proximity to my true goal, and second, it has a rich history of being ruled by those in tune with the Darkside. She looks back up at Marsenus. I will use this places past to make them a loyal base for recruitment into my new legion of Darksiders that will help me return the glory of the first Galactic Empire. As for the Civil War, it benefits me to see the Ren and Imperial Knights grind their members and loyal followers down against one another. And the boy is in a far better position to win, from my last reports, the girl is bottled up in the Deep Core, licking her wounds. As for the former emperor's brother? He is nothing, Coruscant is already besieged by loyalist forces. I have already backed the winning side, and as director of ISB, my duty is to maintain security on our worlds, not send my forces to battle on the front lines. I will give Balthasar this though, his actions did remove a major obstacle for me: Brock Ferrum. For that, I hope his death is swift and painless. She reshelves the book, careful to return it to its proper spot. Does that satisfy your curiosity?

Naturally, Marsenus' attention seemed easily distracted as he looked about. Ah! The Dark Jedi found a basket of fruit nearby. He walks over, finding one of Onderon's exotic fruits, the stuff royalty ate. He grabbed a brightly colored one that purple. Marsenus breaks the skin and proceeds to suck the delicious fruit out of it. However, he kept an ear on what the Grand Inquisitor explained. Chewing quietly, he looked over at Zariel as she finished.
History was never a forte of mine.
The bearded Dark Jedi remarked as he sucked a bit more on the sweet fruit. He then spits out a few seeds.
But, a few of those names are familiar. Plenty of families still remember their Imperial origins and allegiance across the galaxy. Some of whom were neighbors to my own household on Adumar. I think one of them was the descendant of an Imperial Admiral under Ardus Kaine. You live in that part of the galaxy, you are likely Imperial.
Marsenus then set down the fruit. He walks back over to a closer proximity to Zariel. He scratches his chin slightly.
Names that are familiar with the First Order, but I left that life behind me years ago.
He had been, what, close to thirty when that occurred? And now Marsenus was a little over fifty.
So you just wanna make Dark Jedi. I heard about this lost world of Ruusan... the fable of the New Sith Wars. You must be hell-bent if you are here.

Zariel turns to face Marsenus. One hand stretches out and grasps the fruit he had been snacking on with the Force and lifts it, floating it over to her to hover just above her open palm. You are a common traitor, so I would not expect someone like to you understand true loyalty. I followed my masters from the moment I was born, I followed them when Palpatine died and burned my home to the ground to send a message, I followed my master when he conquered death, and I will still follow his will, even now when he is gone. Zariel slams her fist closed, crushing the floating half-eaten fruit in the process, splattering both of them with it's innards. The remnants splatter to the floor. So, yes, I am hell-bent to see his vision fulfilled. With an army of loyal dark jedi I will rebuild what was torn down, a galaxy spanning Empire, ruled by a worthy successor to my fallen master. But first I must start here. My reinforcements will be arriving soon, with supplies to reestablish what was lost on Ruusan. All I need is one more piece to be in place. And for that I must call in a dept. Her booted foot steps on the already crushed fruit and grinds it further down. I am going to give you an opportunity to join me. My legion of Reborn will need trainers. Or instead of being a part of something bigger, you can stay here and play solider. Zariel could always find others if Marsenus refused her offer but felt his usefulness had not reached its end. I will return us to the Halcyon days of old, and you can either join me in the vanguard, or be left behind to rot in the shadows. I leave the choice to you.

A shrug came from the shoulders of the Dark Jedi.
I believe the term on the official record is murderer.
That was what his record said after his dishonorable discharge from the starfighter academy on Adumar. His Adumari family only did so much before cutting him loose, something that Marsenus was more than willing to do. The planet had become boring and dull after all. And afterward, he never looked back. Never had a desire to even contact the family he lost and the fortune that was surrendered. It was better that he was forged as a sellsword among the stars.
Traitor would mean I wouldn't even be having this conversation with you... unless the Inquisition hasn't been reinstated.
Sounded like Zariel was planning something big though. Something that would drive a renewed wave into the galaxy. Inquisition was likely nothing but a stepping stone if that was in her plans. She aimed for something bigger, a wider vision, and a greater goal. And yet, the higher they reached, the fall could easily break their backs. Marsenus had seem such things happen where the great fell easily and quickly from grasping too far.
I'd probably lose some of my men by giving up the mercenary life. Others would likely welcome the opportunity for something greater. Mercenary work hones the skills they believe would help them achieve greater things in the galaxy. Honed mind, a skilled hand, a sharp eye... mercenary work can do wonders for developing a person. Stepping stones towards a greater future.
Marsenus reaches for a new fruit that appeared to be like grapes. He pops one in his mouth and chews on it before spitting the seeds and skin out of his mouth. His eyes were looking over at a bust of a former King of Onderon. A Naddist or one of the successor dynasties. Another fruit was popped in and toyed beneath his lips before eating and repeating. The Adumari male looks at Zariel.
Trainers huh?
He looked away again, clicking his teeth beneath his bearded face.
Dark Jedi are known to be quite the duelists... suppose I say yes, what will become of those who wish to remain?
A good commander looked out for his men and assets. Those who left, that was their decision. Those that remained, what of them?

Zariel looked him over again. She was finally getting him to come round to her goals. His concern for the men currently under his command was... touching. Something that she remembered about her time stuck roaming the void with Vidarr and what was left of Taskforce Hellfire. She raised a hand, as if to quiet his worries. You will retain command of a force, despite your primary role being to oversee the training of recruits, I am sure I will still have 'field' work for you to do. Any of your current command that wish to remain with you will be free to do so, but will ultimately be under my oversight. As for those who would wish to leave... I would encourage you to make them see that this is that greater future they have been building towards. The threat was implied, she wouldn't allow any possible leaks about what was happening out here before she was ready. But any losses to your ranks can be filled by ISB conscripts at your leisure.

His tongue is visibly seen moving towards the right side of his face, indicating that Marsenus was digesting the words of Zariel. He clicks his teeth, with his tongue, as he considers those who would possibly leave. They'd depart cause they wanted to continue being mercenaries. To them, life by the sword and coin was better than any life where one was rooted. He wasn't sure how much he'd lose, but Marsenus felt it would be a good portion.
To them, it is better to live like a mercenary. All they have ever known for decades.
He knew he could count on his core of men, those Adumari and early joiners who had been with him through thick and thin. The rest had brotherhood, but hadn't been with him long enough. Plenty were slaves and conscripts that they picked up between various contracts to refill their numbers.
Likely lose a good portion, but becoming a trainer means I won't need too many personnel.
Marsenus shrugs his shoulders before propping his feet up on the ornate table.
So, how long we gonna wait till your reinforcements arrive and this show can begin?
