Ah, yes. The act of trying to get on his good side. Lotus knew how to talk her way into a sale, it's why she was an expert with thralls and slaves. The purchases from before were much better, only ten had failed the training and were tossed aside. The other thirty succeeded and thrived. One of them was a commander now. These... scrawny specimens, they'd need a lot more work. Through his mask, Marsenus makes a 'tsk' noise, knowing he needed people to refill his ranks and doubtful the Onderonian government would give him prisoners of war from their encampments. Why should they care? Rebels were rebels.
I don't have much of a choice anyways...
Even though the mask didn't look Zariel's direction, his eyes did.
...seeing as my present employer is trying to stiff me. Lost good men taking the monastery, only to have loot be denied to us.
An angry noise came from beneath his mask as Marsenus surveys the specimens.
Fine... I will pay for the lot. But next time, Lotus, you owe me better ones, you hear me?
The Dark Jedi tosses the box of credits into her grasp nearby before making a whistling noise as members from his side came over to grab the specimens and bring them over to their treadspeeders. Marsenus remained where he was while Lotus checked the credits.

Lotus smiles as the credits are shoved into their possession. Covetously they retreated back and had one of their associates hold the case while the credits were counted. After being satisfied, the Zeltron turned their head to look back over their shoulder at Marsenus, head tilted down slightly, still playing the role of seductress. Always a pleasure, Lordy Marsenus. I'll have my people send a transport over with the rest of my stock fit for your... needs. And if you are ever in need of some company yourself... you have my number. They gave a wink before loading back onto Petal before departing, leaving Marsenus and Zariel alone.

Zariel could not help but to roll their eyes at Lotus' display. It was so obvious and over done when viewed from a third party perspective. But it seemed to have worked. Or perhaps this Marsenus character was so desperate for cash and manpower that he had no choice. As Lotus flew away with their guards, leaving just the Imperials and the Mercenaries, Zariel decided to pick up the hints that this old warrior was putting down. You are not happy with your current employer? Perhaps a good thing, for us both. I intended this has-been of a planet to be an easy conquest, so imagine my surprise when I arrived to see a functioning fleet in orbit. Zariel spoke in her typical cold and seemingly disinterested way. A tactic she had long used to keep her true intentions hidden. Cold as ice, but thinly covering the lake of rage that lay beneath. The way I see it, things are going to go one of three ways. One: This pathetic excuse for a civil war ends and you are sent on your way. Two: Your employer tries to defy me and I destroy him and you, should you choose to fight me. Or Three: You enter my employ and you get what you and your men deserve. Based on the intelligence my forces gathered, even in this short time, it seems you have done most of the work in this war. And it also seems you are going to be leaving empty handed. Well, I guess that's not totally true. She gestures to the newly acquired slaves. The Imperial Security Bureau has a sizable budget for what we like to call "Independent Security Contractors" and I feel that this planet, with its instability, has the potential to become a hotbed for smuggling for my Emperor's enemies. However, I have not been given authority to conquer this planet, but to insure it has a stable government, that of course will be supported by the Emperor. A Strong governor will be needed. Someone who is willing to do what must be done. In other words, are you looking for a better paying job? Zariel stepped forward and extended a gloved hand for the man to shake, should he accept the offer.

This had not been the first time Lotus had said those words. Marsenus was rather disinterested though. The ladies of the evening on Nar Shaddaa were much better quality and pricing whenever his men headed that direction. The Dark Jedi was about to turn when this Lady Inquisitor approached him. Gracchus, who had been present at his commander's side was the first to turn as carrion mask of Marsenus looked in the direction of the Near-Human. She gave her long winded explanation of pros and cons, followed up by an expected 'here is a better paying contract' with an extended formality of a gloved hand. The Carrion Lord gazed upon Zariel for a long moment.
I left the Empire because of my crimes, Grand Inquisitor.
Which was a truth, considering the record Marsenus had for killing a fellow cadet in his younger years.
Didn't appreciate her competition... let alone her highborn attitude.
If she was willing to offer him a contract, then there would be a steep price to pay. Considering all the back payments that the King of Onderon and his expensive court owed to him and his mercenaries. Marsenus was going to milk it for what it was worth.
One condition, Miss Inquisitor, my men have been deprived of their deserved loot and payment for months now. That fat oaf, the *legitimate* King of Onderon, owes me a great deal. You allow me and my men to get what is owed... by any means necessary, then you have a deal.
Marsenus planned to loot the royal army, cut down those arrogant generals, storm the royal palace and loot that till it was dry. Only way the King of Onderon was going to satisfy the lack of payment towards his brigade. Besides, there was something he could offer of importance to Zariel. The Dark Jedi eyes glance off in a direction, recalling what he had heard at the monastery.
There are two claimants in this war, Lady Inquisitor. But I am aware of a niece to the reigning King. She was spirited away from the Monastery when we attacked. Held hostage, for a time, by the rebel I fought against, but may be in the clutches of supports and loyalists to her late father. A girl of thirteen I hear... whose to say neither of the present competitors win?
It would give Zariel a means to control the planet through a child-monarch.

As her hand was not accepted right away, Zariel withdrew it and clinched it one finger at a time. Arrogance, the hallmark of these lesser Darksiders, these would be warlords. She remembered the times when true Warlords held these worthless worlds and threatened the New Republic. This one couldn't even demand the respect of a king ruling a single planet, and poorly at that. Her barely contained rage simmered beneath the ice cold expression on her face. She listened, this rogues criminal past was of no matter to her, so far gone was that crime and so minor to her that his name wasn't even one she had come across. And if it would be a bother she could easily arrange for those records to be lost permanently. But if this man wished to loot and pillage this planet, by all means, let him. It mattered not to Zariel what became of this planet, so long as she had a base of operations. She sighed and waved her hand as if this were all beneath her. Very well, find me this long lost heir. I will be leading a 'peace' summit in a few days with the current combatants leadership. Bring her there, dispose of the 'pretenders' and you will have all the loot you and your men can carry. Afterword, I will be contracting to look after the young royal as your ward. Do this and you and your men will have enough imperial credits, that once my need of this planet is done, you will all be able to retire fat and happy on whatever planet you wish. Or perhaps to buy a more imposing fleet, I don't really care. She did not extend her hand first again. Zariel instead waited for him to acknowledge acceptance of the arrangement first.

A raspy breath was heard through the mask that covered the Carrion Lord's face.
Retiring fat and happy isn't for everyone.
After all, even as a child, Marsenus had been rowdy and robust. Many a time, his father had to pay for his son brawling in bars, picking a fight in the streets, and even once tearing up a living room to get back at a rival. In a ways, his crime was likely to blame for his natural affinity to fighting, but Marsenus always blamed the girl's attitude. He just wanted to wipe the smug look off her face.
Likely, some of men would enjoy such a dream... but why die doing nothing? Sounds boring.
Marsenus' mask looks back at his group that had arrived with him. They were already checking out the slaves that Lotus was bringing out. Some would stay behind while a transport, from orbit, would come to retrieve them. The Dark Jedi turns his mask now back to Zariel.
Last I heard, the girl was taken to the Eastern Jungle. It's where rebels once fought against the Separatist-aligned government during the Clone Wars. Bunch of old tunnels, abandoned mines, and such over there. Probably a place where personnel of neither side are weathering this storm.
Marsenus had his own intelligence officers, but not as effective as Zariel's obviously.
Be several days before she is acquired. Should I bring her alone?

Zariel waves her hand dismissively as Marsenus spouts a line she has heard many times from many different people. Indeed it did ring true for her in a fashion. She could have chosen at any point to stop and colonize some planet and rule as a queen with her survivors from the Old Empire, or she could have simply retired after the fall of the ill-conceived Diarchy. But unlike this blade-for-hire she had a purpose. She was forged in the crucible of the old Inquisitorius, learned from the likes of Jarac, Blackhole, and even Vader to a degree. As long as there were Jedi in this galaxy, opposing the will of the rightful heirs to the Empire, she would keep fighting and killing. But this man fought for nothing but pride and money. Money that he seemed to have no interest on living to spend. But what did it matter? He was a pawn on the chess board before her. He is nothing more than a stepping stone to a far greater goal. One that could be achieved without his help, but it would make things more difficult. She couldn't afford to be bogged down in an illegal war on Onderon, especially when her true goal was so near. Speaking of pawns, the self appointed Carrion Lord asked if the royal teenager was to be brought back alone or not. Zariel let a slight smile grace her pale face. No need for us to alienate the new Queen before she has even ascended. Resort to force only if there is no other choice. I can delay the summit until you have her. Then the others will either bend the knee to her, or they will die. Either way, after her ascension is secured, it will be made clear to her who it is that truely rules here. With that she gave a gesture between the two of them. She will need a trusted regent before she comes of age, and after a trusted advisor to keep her on the correct path, a path that does not require me to come and correct its course.

Through his beaked mask, an inhale was heard before a deep exhale followed. Even if this job was done entirely by his mercenaries, Marsenus could expect a better payment than the betrayed agreement with the King that he had fought for these past several months. A chance to loot a palace was always on his checklist. And besides, he'd be doing the royal family a favor. A beggar queen would be more willing to follow the commands of the Grand Inquisitor than one who had the means and influence to be a thorn in the future. Marsenus would have to play his part well.
I will... examine those who support her. A list will be compiled of those who may interfere with your work.
His mask glanced over at his trusted lieutenant who nods his head and proceeds to walk back to their treadspeeders. His gaze turned back to the humanoid Dark Jedi. It was curious to see why an Imperial was interested in Onderon. True, she was aligned with the Dark Side, but there surely had to be more for a Grand Inquisitor to move this far from the true Imperial heartlands.
You will see when the girl is retrieved. If there is nothing else to say of course.

Zariel, upon hearing that Marsenus would take the job, waved her hand, dismissing him to be on his way. I will be in the capital, making sure everything is ready for her coronation. With that, she turned and returned to the Mephistopheles that would then fly her to the command post that had been established for her in Iziz
