Faelan wakes to the sound of Telarial's screaming, sitting up and automatically reaching for his blaster, hanging within easy reach in its holster from the corner of the bedside table. Drawing the blaster while sliding his legs to the side of the bed, Faelan's racing heart slows as he wakes enough to realize that the screams are not likely to be due to any threat, and are far more likely to be engendered by nightmares. Cautious by nature, Faelan keeps the blaster at his side all the same, moving cautiously, alert for any signs his instinct about what has given rise to Telarial's screaming is incorrect, as he leaves his bedroom and enters the main living area of the home.
Nothing in the living area or the entrance of the residence suggests an intruder, and so Faelan sets the blaster on a shelf before making his way to the door of the guest room. Pausing outside, running a hand through his currently unbound shoulder length hair as he debates the merits of risking frightening Telarial more than she already is by trying to rouse her, Faelan ultimately decides it would be best to free her from whatever nightmare it is that has visited her sleep and, rapping on the door first and calling her name on the off chance it will summon her from sleep, opens the door and steps inside, his hand reaching for the light switch beside the door.
Walking to the side of the bed, Faelan gently shakes Telarial's shoulder, trying to rouse her by saying, "Telarial? It is just a dream ad'ika. Wake up."

*Telarial bolts upright in bed with a sharp gasp and pants as if she's been running. Small beads of sweat had formed on her forehead and she clutched one hand over her rapidly racing heart. Telarial remembers the nightmare in vivid detail. Dreams were not entire memories. Just warped versions of them. Still, the dream had been...had felt...real enough. Without thinking or realizing what she was doing. Telarial began to cry. As she sobbed she choked out words.*
"I-it was them. They came....my buirs...I could hear their screams. See them burning...they came for me. The raiders, they found me!"
*Telarial turned pleading eyes on Faenor as tears continued to leak from her eyes. As if he held the cure for dispelling night terrors.*

Faelan rests a callused hand on Telarial's shoulder when she turns her eyes to him, giving her what he hopes is a comforting, reassuring squeeze as he tells her in a sure and certain voice in Mando'a, "It was a dream ad'ika. Nothing more. Lifting his other hand to gesture around the room, he says, They are not here, they cannot hurt you now. Though he knows it is easier said than done, for how many times has he been haunted by dreams of his sons' dying moments, dreamed that he was with them and yet powerless to save them, Faelan tells her, Do not give them the power to haunt you in your dreams ad'ika. Tapping the side of her head gently, he explains, You are the gatekeeper of what is allowed in your thoughts and dreams. It takes self-discipline, but you can decide what is and is not permitted to occupy your thoughts. The past is unchangeable, it cannot be undone no matter how much we wish it were so or how long we dwell on it; it is the here and now where we can effect changes for good or ill, and so it is there you should focus your thoughts. Smiling and ruffling her hair, Faelan advises her, Dream of what you can do in the here and now ad'ika. You will sleep easier for it if you can do so, I promise you that."

*Telarial nods gratefully and hugs him*
"Vor entye."
*She pauses for a moment and silently clutches her blankets, her brows furrowed as if in deep thought, as though she were weighing a heavy decision or fighting some internal battle with herself. Eventually she spoke to him again in Mando'a*
"Faelan...can you...can you please stay here with me until I fall back asleep?"

"Ba'gedet'ye," Faelan tells Telarial when she thanks him, feeling relived that his words have proven to be of some comfort to her despite his fears to the contrary. When he sees her furrowed brows, Faelan frowns pensively even though he is not aware that his concern for the young woman is so transparent, waiting silently for Telarial to find the words it seems to him that she is searching for.
"Elek * ad'ika, Faelan tells Telarial with a smile when she asks if he can stay until she is asleep, and sits on the edge of the bed to illustrate his commitment to fulfill that promise to her. Forgetting his resolve to maintain his distance from the young woman for a moment, Faelan reaches over and brushes her short hair back to smooth it down soothingly as he says softly, Nuhoy ** ad'ika," and then pats the pillow to bid her to lay down. Only after Telarial's breathing has slowed and he is sure that she is sleeping peacefully and soundly does Faelan return to his room.
The following morning, after waking early to exercise as is his custom, Faelan sets himself to making a morning meal of tiingilar, a spicy meat and vegetable casserole, first beginning to brew a pot of spiced caf; and soon the combined aromas of the meal and beverage fill the air. Having seen Telarial's appetite the previous evening, Faelan does not think it will take long for the young woman to be summoned by the scent of the meal.
* Yes ** Sleep

*Telarial was relieved when Faelan promised to sit beside her. It didn't take long for her to pass out again. She had no more nightmares that evening. When morning came, Telarial awoke to the tantalizing aroma of cooking food and softly padded out of her bedroom. She normally would have gone straight to the fresher to wash her face and comb her hair but priorities had to come first. She found Faelan cooking in the kitchen and smiled warmly at him. She didn't know it, but her short cropped hair was standing on end as if she'd stuck a finger in a power outlet.*
"vaar'tur."
*Telarial watched him and complimented him in mando'a*
"You are quite the chef, you know that? Not even I can make food smell or taste or look that good..."
*Morning*

"Vaar'tur, Faelan echoes with a rare cheerful note in his voice he is completely unaware of, unable to keep from smiling when he looks over his shoulder and sees the state of Telarial's hair. Sheber, * he tells her, pointing towards a chair with the spoon he is using to serve out the tiingilar. Laughing when she compliments his cooking, Faelan jokingly cautions her in Mando'a, Best to hold the compliments until you've tasted it ad'ika."
Setting a plate of the spicy casserole and a mug of the spiced caf in front of Telarial, Faelan tells her, "Epar," ** before turning to make a plate for himself and then seating himself at the table.
As he tucks in, Faelan asks Telarial, having thought of the question while preparing the meal and remembering all that she had told him of her life and of how she wanted to learn more of her culture, "Tell me, ad'ika, did you ever go through the verd'goten?" ***
* Sit ** Eat *** Traditional rite of passage in Mandalorian culture in which a Mandalorian youth was accepted as an adult

*Telarial laughed at his modesty.*
"Are you kidding me? After what I had last night, I'm sure it's going to be good!"
*When he tells her to sit down, she seats herself and eagerly awaits the meal. As soon as it's in front of her she takes one bite and makes a disgusted face*
"Faelan...this is TERRIBLE."
*She looks at him very seriously before bursting out laughing*
"I'm just kidding! This is DELICIOUS!"
*Without further ado, she began to eat. Only this time taking small moments to savor each bite and marvel at the flavor, even humming in satisfaction on occasion. When he asks her the question regarding 'verd'goten' she gives him a confused look*
"I'm guessing...no? I don't know what that is," Telarial admitted sheepishly.

Pausing with his spoon halfway to his mouth when Telarial declares the dish he has prepared is terrible after taking a bite, Falean chuckles with a shake of his head accompanying his arched eyebrow when it becomes clear with her next declaration that her first was made in jest. "I'm so very glad it is to your liking ad'ika," he says in Mando'a with an amused smile.
Taking a sip of caf before answering Telarial's question, Faelan considers how best to explain it for a moment before settling on a simpler answer he can expand upon later as needed. "The verd'goten is a test of one's fighting and survival skills that all Mando'ade children must go through in order to be considered adults. A rite of passage, he adds to clarify in simpler terms. Normally a child is trained from the age of eight until they are thirteen in the skills needed to pass their verd'goten, but there can be, he gestures with his mug towards Telarial, exceptions in some circumstances. You told me last night that you feel as though you are dar'manda. Passing the verd'goten, and thereby being legally considered an adult in Mandalorian society, would be a step towards remedying that."

*Telarial couldn't prevent a goofy grin from blossoming on her face when she caught Faelan's reaction to her jest. In due time, perhaps Faelan would come to see her more mischievous and rather playful nature. It made her happy, to see him smile. The teen could tell that he was slowly coming out of the shell he'd locked himself away in. It was in that moment that the youngster decided that she would do everything in her power to make him laugh. Telarial had the feeling that like Arkillian...Faelan was more reserved about expressing such emotional displays. That wasn't going to stop her though. If anything, it cemented her newfound goal.*
"Well...Arkillian was teaching me. I did learn some good things! I learned how to throw knives. He taught me how to use a blaster and a sniper rifle. I'm the best sharpshooter in the galaxy!"
*Telarial declared with pride while crossing her arms and gave Faelan a haughty smirk, as if daring him to discredit her skill set*
"Not that I like bragging or anything...he told me I should let my actions, not my words, do the talking. I can show you sometime! He also taught me the bounty hunter trade. And how to use my gear. Do I fulfill the parameters for passing the verd'goten?"

Faelan arches an eyebrow with a skeptical grunt when Telarial claims to be the best sharpshooter in the galaxy, his expression revealing despite his usual stoic demeanor that he is unsure whether the boast is meant to be taken literally or is simply the young woman's colorful and spirited manner of expressing herself, and then almost - but not quite - manages to keep himself from smiling when Telarial's haughty smirk caps off her statement.
Shaking his head after considering Telarial's question, Faelan says, "No ad'ika, you would need to be formally tested in order to fulfill the parameters. Rubbing the tip of his nose to try and conceal his amused smile, Faelan makes a rare attempt at humor and adds, Though if all you've said of your skills is true, I have little doubt that you would easily pass any test involving sharpshooting or thrown knives. His demeanor reverting to his more customary seriousness, Faelan says, feeling that in light of all that Telarial has shared of her past that any test she would face would in all likelihood pale in comparison to what she has already faced and surmounted, In your case the verd'goten may be more formality than anything given your experience, but, he shrugs almost apologetically, aware that tradition demands Telarial be tested to be officially considered an adult in Mandalorian society, you would still need to be tested if you truly wish to embrace your heritage as you've said."

*Telarial's head tilted as confusion marred her young face.*
"What do these tests involve? Are you going to test me?"
*Telarial fidgeted and tried to hide her nervousness. She wasn't sure if she had what it took to successfully pass the verd'goten. Her next words were soft as she stared down at her lap.*
"What happens if I fail?"

Faelan lifts his hands with the suggestion of an amused smile barely allowed to quirk the right corner of his lips upwards as he tries to slow the pace of Telarial's questions enough that he has time to answer a few before more follow. "The manner or form of ones test varies, but would be chosen to provide opportunities to gauge your skills in survival, weapons mastery, tactics, and so on. Ones test can be anything from a hunt to participation in a military action of some kind."
His expression becoming almost pained as his thoughts are sent back to the testings of his sons, Faelan goes on, "I . . . I think it would be better for you that a more skilled instructor than I oversees your testing. Moving on quickly to try and prevent any lingering on the subject or potential attempts by Telarial to protest or try and sway his opinion, Falean says, I can speak to the leader of my Clan, he will surely know of who would best serve as your teacher once we tell him of your unique situation."
Arching an eyebrow when he considers the best answer to the last of Telarial's questions, Faelan asks in a subtle effort to increase her confidence and offer advice he feels is useful in many areas of life, "Are you worried about that ad'ika? Truly? After all that you have endured, all that you have been through and accomplished, I imagine any test you might face will pale in comparison and be surmounted with your skills and wits. Doubts and worry, in any event, serve little purpose and accomplish nothing."

*Telarial's head lifted and she met Faelan's gaze once he began to speak. Her hopeful look was soon shattered and replaced with disappointment and sorrow when he revealed that he had no desire to train her. She could sense from him...feelings of grief and pain. Even though she was 17, she could read people's emotions and their potential thoughts well enough. She set the mug of caf down on the table that she hadn't realized was in her hand and gave Faelan a long, hard stare. The look wasn't meant to be intimidating. It was an expression that spoke of wisdom and empathy beyond her young years.*
"Faelan, I know why you don't want to train me. I know I have no business to pry into your personal life...but clearly there is something that deeply troubles you. Enough so that you would be willing enough to quickly pawn me off on another Mando'ade."
*Telarial's face softened and her face mirrored the grief she knew he had to be feeling and that she felt herself. Without thinking, the teenager reached across the table and rested one hand on his.*
"Faelan...you told me last night that the past cannot be changed no matter how much we wish it. And that our thoughts should be focused on what we can do in the here and now. I know you still suffer the grief from the loss of your family. I still suffer too. You do not have to tell me what happened but just know that I am a good listener should that day ever come..."
*She pulled her hand away when she was finished and ran a hand through her soft, short, brown hair feeling awkward. She hoped her actions hadn't offended him. She frowned, looking down at the table and subtly used her right hand to drum her fingers against the wooden surface, a clear indication she was nervous. Her expression soon turned grim although the look in her eyes reflected the true fear she was feeling. She quickly continued before he had a chance to respond.*
"Faelan...there is something I've withheld from you. A secret I've carried since my guardian's death. Your clan leader...or any other for that matter would kill me if they discovered it. -You- have to be the one to train me."
*Not giving him a chance to respond she quickly stood up and placed both hands on the table, leaning slightly towards him with desperation lingering in her voice.*
"I will find a way to repay you!! Please...I can't do this without you..." She ended with a pleading expression, her food utterly forgotten. Although she was usually good at hiding her true feelings from strangers...the more she got to know Faelan, the easier it became to truly express herself. The haunted look in her eyes betrayed the hurt and fear she felt at the prospect that she would once again be abandoned. Left alone with no one to guide her.*

Faelan's jaw muscles tighten visibly as he struggles to refrain from interrupting Telarial, her accusation about him wanting to pawn her off stinging him as much as it infuriates him despite the fact that it is not only true, but also accompanied by a scathingly accurate analysis of his motivations. Looking down to avoid Telarial's gaze when she levels a hard, piercing stare towards him, Faelan tries to hold fast to his anger in the hopes of it providing him with the strength he is beginning to suspect he will need if he is to stick to his resolve to keep from allowing his growing affection for Telarial from tempting him to open himself up more than he has already.
Though he does not want to listen to anything Telarial says, everything within him arguing that he shut her and her words out before they can find more cracks in his emotional armor to sink into and peel it away more and more, Faelan cannot bring himself to ignore her any more than he can to interrupt with angry dismissals or calm arguments; and his posture, with slumped shoulders and head hanging, reveals his defeat even before, when she has finished speaking, he lifts his head and his eyes, glistening with the hint of tears he will not permit to fall no matter how much he has been forced by what she has said to dwell upon the painful reminder of the loss of his sons, or of what he has become in the wake of their loss and that of his wife, reveal the depths of what Telarial has lain bare before him with her words. Lifting a hand as though asking for an end to an assault he suspects he will not be able to withstand if it continues any longer, Faelan relents, "Alright ad'ika, alright. If it is what you truly want, I will do this for you. Taking a deep breath, the step taken and unable to be untaken, Faelan closes his eyes as he accepts all that comes with the responsibility he has taken on, and all the changes he suspects will be required of him, and says with a frown of distaste, No more talk of repayment though ad'ika; I do not do this for credits or reward. Sitting up straighter, resolve replacing his earlier defeated posture now that he has made a vow to himself to do what Telariral has asked to the utmost of his ability, Faelan meets her eyes with his own in a penetrating, searching gaze as he asks, This secret you spoke of, ad'ika, what is it?"

*Telarial grimaces when she visibly feels Faelan's anger and sits down as though a heavy weight has just been dropped on her. She lowers her head unable to meet his penetrating gaze and feels her cheeks burning. Perhaps she had been far too brazen. She bit her lower lip and appeared to be in deep thought. Eventually she spoke softly in Mando'a*
"Forgive me Faelan. I did not mean to overstep my bounds...I'm sorry."
*She managed a half smile and shook her head*
"You misunderstand...I do not wish to repay you with credits or reward. What I wish, is to help you in the care and upkeep of your home. And to prepare meals on occasion if this should win your approval. As for my secret..."
*She looked up at long last to meet his hard stare and looked as though she were ready to burst into tears.*
"I'm scared...that you will kill me if I show you. I'm not like normal Mando'ades."

Glad that Telarial has lowered her gaze and does not see his hesitation before he overcomes his stoic nature and reaches out to take her hands in his, Faelan softens his tone and expression as he says gently but with utter conviction in their native Mando'a, "There is nothing to forgive ad'ika. You merely pointed out the truth, he says in tacit acknowledgement of the fact that Telarial had seen right through his flimsy protests, recognizing the fear that lay behind his initial refusal to consider training her himself. I am sorry that I . . . did not see, or was not brave enough to overcome my fears until you pointed them out."
Though he finds the idea that whatever secret it is that Telarial is keeping could prompt him to consider killing her laughable, Faelan's tone is sincere and somber as he gently squeezes her hands and reassures her, "Whatever this secret is, ad'ika, I can promise you that nothing would ever cause me to so much as entertain the idea of harming you in any way. The conviction he feels of the truth in what he says would be evident to even one not gifted with the insight being Force sensitive grants Telarial access to, Faelan's affection for Telarial and the protectiveness he feels plain to see even if not even he has acknowledged it. And, he adds with a sigh as he pats Telarial's hands before leaning back in his chair and picking up his caf mug, if you are not ready to share it now, then I will not force you to divulge it. When you are ready, he concludes, know that you can tell me anything without fear of rejection or judgement."

*Telarial exhaled a breath of relief when he not only accepts her apology but promises not to harm her should she choose to reveal her power.*
"Thank you Faelan. Don't be sorry...those that have suffered great loss all carry the same burden and the same fears. It took three years before Arkillian could get me to talk to him about the events that led to the death of my buirs."
*With a soft smile she nodded*
"I will hold you to your word that you will not kill me. Please don't freak out..."
*Releasing another sigh she put on a brave face despite the fear she felt and closed her eyes, reaching a hand out in Faelan's direction. Slowly, his fork lifted into the air by the power of the force. and drifted into her hand. She was trembling by that point and the look of concentration on her face was almost pained as if the mere action invoked some form of discomfort. Once it was in her hand she opened her eyes and looked at Faelan. She slowly slid his fork across the table top back to it's original owner with her right hand.*
"I believe this is yours..."
*Despite the fact her voice sounded calm, her posture was rigid, suggesting the fact she was ready to bolt if the need was dire.*
"I have these abilities...I used to believe I was cursed when they first became apparent when I was 10. When I saw the Jedi kill Arkillian...I lost all control. I killed the Jedi who had slain him with the Jedi's own power. I have never been trained by any of them. Because of our war with force users, I felt I would either be killed or shunned by our people if they knew I held this power. I've spent my whole life, hiding from Jedi and Mando'ades alike."
*The tears she had been withholding finally began to leak out of her eyes and slowly slid down her rosy cheeks. She did not sob but the release of such tears brought with it enormous pain and guilt. Her facial expression turned into one of near agony as she revealed something else regarding her dark past.*
"Faelan...it's my fault that the Jedi killed Arkillian. That Jedi discovered I carried their power and tried to take me far from Manda'yaim."
*Telarial quickly stood up from her chair. Her expression shifted into one of rage as the tears began to cascade faster*
" If it wasn't for me...Arkillian never would have fought to save me. He never would have died."
*She clenched her hands into fists. Her anger grew so great that she was unable to control what happened next. Her caf mug shattered...caused undoubtedly by the force. She stared down at it in stunned horror. With quick efficiency, she hastily cleaned up the spilled caf which thankfully hadn't been a lot and looked guiltily down at the broken mug*
"I'm s-sorry! Sometimes I can't control it..."
*She winced while giving Faelan a guilty look. The teenager hadn't noticed it but since the breaking of Faelan's mug she had already taken three steps backwards in the direction of the door. No doubt a deeply ingrained survival instinct since revealing her secret. Her eyes were filled with the fear of wrathful retribution.*
"This is why I've been hiding like a damn coward and running all my life! Because of this...this CURSE...if any other Mando'ade besides you ever witnesses what I can do, they would probably mistake me for a Jedi and try to kill me."

Faelan is unsure what it is he might have anticipated or guessed Telarial would feel was a secret she might die were it to be revealed, but the possibility that she was a Force user had not been among those things which had flitted through his mind before the mystery was at last revealed, at first by way of a carefully telekinetically manipulated utensil, and, later, further illustrated by an unintentional shattering of a mug. Telarial, if she attends to Faelan's emotional reactions in the wake of what she shares as closely as her abilities enable her to do, will be relieved to note that fear, disgust, loathing, and aggression are not among those things Faelan feels; in fact, much to the contrary, after his surprise fades, what Faelan predominantly feels is relief that Telarial's secret is not as threatening or dire as she herself perceives it to be.
Before Faelan can explain to her why she need not fear her secret being revealed quite as much as Telarial believes, she goes on to describe some of the reasons that undoubtedly contribute to not only her fears about her secret, but also the possible origins of the guilt and trauma Faelan has witnessed in her eyes and tone at times. Recognizing from Telarial's subtle movement towards the door, as well as from her tone and expression, just how potentially fragile the moment is, how any wrong move or word on his part would send Telarial fleeing from him, running as she has been conditioned to believe she must always run, Faelan makes no move to rise or bar her from leaving,, merely holding up a hand to bid her silently to stay, his expressing beseeching her to trust him as he believes she has begun to do despite all that she has endured.
His tone is calm, patient, and yet undoubtedly betrays Faelan's fervent desire to convince Telarial to stay as much as it reveals that he has, despite the emotional distance he typically keeps between himself and others, begun to develop a paternal affection for and a desire to protect Telarial, as he says in their native Mando'a, clearly speaking without the usual deliberate care he takes before voicing his thoughts in a desire to keep from staying silent too long, "I'd stand between you and any that sought to do you harm ad'ika, believe that if you believe nothing else I will say now. I understand your fear, and your guilt ad'ika. There may well be those among the Mando'ade even now, with the Crusades over and the Mand'alor gone, who would seek your death were they to learn of your abilities. Abilities, Faelan repeats with emphasis, not a curse. Your Force sensitivity was not something you chose, and was not something done to you any more than the color of your eyes or hair was adi'ika. Not knowing the specifics of the confrontation between the Jedi and Arkillan, Faelan can only guess at what may have led to the latter's death at the hands of the Jedi, but his conviction is absolute as he tells Telarial, It is not your fault that Arkillan died ad'ika. Rising slowly and, watching Telarial carefully so that he can stop if it seems she will interpret his approach as a threat and appears about to flee from him, Faelan continues, If the Jedi tried to take you without the consent of you or your guardian, then they are to blame ad'ika, you must know that. Don't accept the burden of blame when it is not yours to bear. Knowing that appeal is one easier spoken than achieved, Faelan continues by attempting to reassure her on another matter, his desperation as he tries to convince her that she need not run from him evident in his expression despite his calm, even tone, You don't need to run anymore, or hide, ad'ika, not from me. Whatever lays ahead, we can face together."

*Telarial's tears stop for a moment as she senses Faelan's sincerity and knows for certain that he does not wish her harm. Even though mild surprise and subtle doubt can be seen in her eyes, her expression proves that she undoubtedly believes Faelan's truth. She gives him a dubious look and then proceeds to take a couple steps, albeit hesitantly, towards him.*
"You want me to stay..." it was a statement and not a question, confirming what Faelan suspected concerning her sensitivity to his feelings.
"And you would really do that for me... Stand between me and any who may seek to harm me?"
*Her eyes suddenly went wide at another thought and she vigorously shook her head. Her lower lip trembling when she speaks to him again in Mando'a suggesting a fear she'd carried since her tragic past first began.*
"Faelan! I don't want you to suffer Arkillian's fate. I'm not worth that risk!"
*She tried to mask her grief in place of anger but was failing miserably as she roughly wiped the tears off of her face with the sleeve of her black jumpsuit. Her next words were spoken in a low tone but her voice cracked, betraying what she truly felt beneath the transparent mask she attempted to hide behind. The underlying emotions were raw and Faelan who had most likely himself experienced such feelings, would undoubtedly be able to recognize them. They spoke of great grief, fear, and anguish. Telarial didn't want to appear weak before him but she knew her pitiful attempts at building some form of emotional barrier was in vain. Faelan not only reminded her of Arkillian but of her buir as well. The kinship she already felt and the affection she held for her new mentor grew stronger with each passing moment. The things he had been doing so far to take care of her, whether Faelan himself knew it or not, was exactly the behavior an actual buir would exhibit.*
"I've lost everyone that I've ever loved!! I would never be able to live with myself...if anything ever happened to you Faelan on the account of me! I swore since Arkillian's death that I would never make that mistake again."
*She clenched her jaw and balled her hands into fists as she angrily tried to will the tears away. She succeeded but barely. Her eyes were filled to the brim, the light in the room reflecting off of them as her lip continued to tremble. Telarial was far too emotionally unbalanced at the moment to listen to Faelan's voice of reason regarding the fact that she shouldn't carry the blame for what happened.*
