It seems her scout line hadn't managed to find them all, since at least one has been lurking near the stairs. From further ahead, there was the familiar 'zhap, zhap' sound of discharging stun weapons. Pushing forward up the stairs, Kunta reached the arch. Inside was the small cluster that the sensors had noticed in the first place. While the creatures had technically only been stunned, there was no doubt that the were dead. Each of the visible bodies was smouldering slightly as the neural tissue inside the creature had been flash ignited by the somewhat experimental modification. As with the one on the stairs, these were without a doubt rakghouls. At least according to the data Kunta had pulled up on the trip in.
-Kunta I love a toasty target.
There was a flicker of movement off the the left & Kunta put a wild shot down that hallway. Most of the wide-spray shot grounded itself harmlessly into the stone & ice of the citadel, the edge of it clipped the side of the darting creature though. The creature was attempting to continue pulling itself along, though one arm & a leg were smoking & limp from the effects of the weapon. A second shot put the creature the rest of the way down.
-Kunta For close quarters, you just can't beat Area of Effect.

Drez and his squad continued walking up the stairs, leaving the observatory, till they reached the top. At the top, fallen pillars were scattered around They continued walking around the pillars till they reached an edge.
"I remember when we used to push unarmed battle droids off the cliff." Vorik said with a chuckle.
Drez heard a snarl coming from the entrance to the keep, a temple full of Jedi statues, or what's left of them. He signaled his squad to stay quiet. He turned around and pulled out both his DC-15s pistols from their holders. He advanced quietly towards the entrance before peeking quickly around the corner, pistols first. Nothing was there.
He then heard a shout behind him as Izmar started firing above him. Drez looked up and saw a Rakghoul climbing the wall. Without hesitating, he pulled the trigger once on each pistol, each blast hitting the Rakghoul's back, along with Izmar's blasts hitting the creature's body in random places.
The creature lost grip and fell into his back, rolling down the stairs. Wounded, it breathed heavily as Drez leaned down above him and stabbed it in it's heart, ending it's life ultimately.
"Is it dead?" Jackie asked, putting away a detonator she had in her hand.

There was a groan and snap of stone as one of the jedi statues was toppled by something lurking in its shadow. The now visible recesses of the alcove revealed a trio of the infected beasts. Their ambush ruined, the beasts immediately leapt at the squad. A gaping maw of stone at the rear of the alcove darkly promising more of the beasts in hiding still.
She had been right next to the squad a moment ago. Unfortunately, she had lost track of them when they rushed ahead again. Trusting them look after themselves, she pressed on into the citadel. The lack of mutual support did have her a little worried for her own safety though.

The squad had been separated from Kunta and her drones. They ran inside the citadel itself, which was very dark. The 4 soldiers illuminated the flashlights built into their helmets and proceeded down a staircase. They kept on walking down until they entered a big room, with nothing but a big piece of stone in the middle.
Drez walked over and examined it. He wiped the dust off, revealing an image. An image of a Jedi. They were in Ulic Qel Droma's tomb.
"This is Ulic Qel Droma's tomb. This is why we cam here." Drez informed his squad mates, before hearing many loud growls in front of him. He threw a flare. As it popped, it revealed at least a dozen Rakghouls sitting in the dark, ready to pounce.
"RUN!" Drez yelled.

Hearing someone yelling, Kunta turned to find the four missing troopers running down the hallway. Behind them were a host of ghouls.
-Kunta HIT THE DECK!
She had calling in several of her drones to watch her back at the lack of support, but now they came in handy for more than just providing extra lights. Without waiting the see if the troopers actually did duck, something she hoped they would out of pure reflex, she swung her M-CLAW around. The blast it gave off had a tendency to fill a good chunk of the halls. However, she didn't want to hit the troopers as the blast would kill them as surely as a disruptor would. Aiming the weapon slightly high, She fired down the hall, with two of the drones firing a moment later.
If the troopers did hit the deck, the blast would pass close over them, possibly disrupting some of their suit systems. But it would definitely kill a good dozen of the ghouls, & likely drive the rest back into cover for enough time for the regathered team to get ready.
If the troopers didn't hit the deck, the power of the stun blast would burn out their nervous systems as surely as it did the ghoul's.

Midnight Squad had dolphin-dived in different directions as soon as Kunta shouted those words, each one landing with a loud bang. They watched as the blast of the weapon Kunta held streaked right above them, nearing taking off their heads. The impact killed the Rakghouls immediately, no monster surviving as the creatures' dead bodies fell to the floor.
"Impressive gun." Vorik remarked as he stood up. He had a passion for big guns unlike any other person has ever seen before.
Drez helped Izmar and Jackie up by holding his arms out. "My HUD is short-circuiting." Drez said as he walked around the tomb, looking for anything that looked like it could hold an object inside. "What did that weapon do?" He asked as he opened a box, finding nothing inside.
"Yeah, my HUD is down." Izmar added. "And all my tech is offline."
"I'm sure it'll come back soon." Jackie said, hoping to make them quiet.
Drez decided to push off the lid of the big, marble sarcophagus in the center of the room. A few hard pushes and grunts later, he was able to creek open the sarcophagus. He activated a flashlight and took a peek inside, but saw nothing but old dusty robes and a cubical object wrapped in cloth.
Drez pulled out the cubical cloth in an angle that Kunta couldn't see and began unwrapping it. At the final pull on the cloth, a blue, cubical object that appeared to be emitting light appeared. "The Holocron." He whispered to himself before quickly wrapping it up again.

Kunta was a little surprised she had managed to get the entire charging horde with one trio of blasts, on the other hand it seems she had aimed too low still. She moved quickly to check the other halls leading into the area, sending the drones off in the opposite direction to speed up the process. By the time she was sure they weren't about to get jumped, the four troopers where standing over an open tomb. Inside was nothing but an old robe. She had missed the trooper slipping it the holocron out of sight when she returned.
-Kunta Sorry about any damages to your suits. I don't think this think has been tested again armor before.
Taking a longer look into the tomb, it was obviously very old.
-Kunta I'm pretty sure he isn't one of them. Why did you pop that open in the first place, anyway?

"Our suits are fine now." Izmar muttered, still getting electrical shocks across his body.
Drez couldn't let Kunta find out what he was up to. The holocron he acquired had great important to the cause his squad's cause, and if the First Order had found out about the holocron, it would most likely mean their demise.
"What? I can't honor boneman here?" Drez grinned and held his hand out as he bowed towards the sarcophagus. "Just wanted to see if there was any gold with it, that's all." He lied.

Kunta couldn't help but roll her eyes behind her helmet. She wondered it all the clones had been this crass & if so, she wasn't surprised at all that most of them ended up poorly.
-Kunta Right. Well we are getting paid to clear out this place, so try not to desecrate any more tombs, ok?
Hopefully, none of the locals would bother to ask about the broken open tomb. On the other hand, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get this group away from possible temptations as soon as possible. Fortunately, there shouldn't be any tombs further down, & from the general look of things, that was where the main nest was lurking. Heading over to a well of a staircase, Kunta looked down into gloom that seemed more to eat the light than be vanquished by it.
-Kunta So... Who wants to go down the scary shaft of death first?

"Why not send one of your drones down there first?" Jackie asked.
"You're only saying that because you know us clones and Drez have good manners." Vorik grinned from behind his helmet.
"Are you two thinking what I'm thinking?" Izmar asked with a wide grin.
Drez and Vorik both pointed a finger at Jackie. "Ladies first."
Jackie threw her hands down in frustration. "Why are you always trying to get me killed?!"
"Maybe we should ask you that question, by the way you always fly." Izmar remarked.
Jackie ignored her squadmates because they were messing around at the wrong time in her opinion. She turned to Kunta. "Do you suggest we send a drone down there first?"

Kunta shrugged, an interesting maneuver in powered armor.
-Kunta I did, lost connection. How do you think I know there are more down there?
The rest of the drone had finished the sweep of the upper parts of the citadel. All that was left now was the shaft. The remaining nineteen M1 drones had gathered with the group. The other five had been lost so far in the fighting.

"No connection, you say." Jackie nodded her head. "How dark is it down there?"
"Doesn't matter how dark it is down there. We got night and thermal vision in our visors." Izmar looked at her while banging his hand on his helmet.
"Oh wow. You really enlightened us." Jackie replied with an attitude. She was getting pissed off at her squadmates.
"Hey, hey! Don't get all dramatic with me." Izmar replied.
"Here we go again." Vorik whispered to Drez, who was ignoring the other two.
Drez turned to Kunta, ignoring the drama Jackie was causing. "How about the old fashion way?" He asked as he unhitched 2 different types of grenades from his belt. "Flashbangs and concussions."

While she lacked more traditional grenades she did have a few shopped up specials that worked on the same basic principle as her rifle. It was far too bulky to fire from the standard M-CLAW ordinance launcher, but that was fine as she didn't have one of those on hand anyway.
-Kunta On the count of three?
Not particularly waiting for the troopers to start another fight, it was a wonder the had lasted through the entire war in the first place, She slowly counted down & dropped the device. It quickly vanished in the gloom. She had set it for contact trigger & then dropped it near as she could to the center of the shaft. It was a uncomfortably long time before the bottom of the shaft was filled with a pulsing web of golden filaments clawing up toward the surface. The blast was brief & only reached halfway up the shaft, but it was enough to show the drop was nearly a kilometer. It also showed that the walks were rippling. More correctly, the entire interior surface of the shaft, thin winding stairway included, was crawling with Rakghouls clinging to the walls. The bottom half was now clear, but the surviving swarm was now headed right for the only exit. & the team was currently standing directly in the way.

"Great. Now they're provoked." Jackie muttered to Kunta as she shook her head. She just wanted to get off of Rhen Var alive, as a human.
The explosion Kunta had set off didn't take out all of the Rakghouls, but at least half of them were incinerated in the blast.
"These are the last of them Kunta states. I say we get this over with." Vorik said as he stood near the edge of the shaft, observing the locations of the Rakghouls climbing up.
Izmar dropped a few detonators down the shaft, causing a huge explosion that took out quite a few of those nasty, deadly Rakghouls. "Did you really think I was going to wait till the count of 3 to start killing these nasty creatures?"
Drez didn't speak a word as he dropped a flashbang and a concussion grenade and started unleashing a volley of blaster fire down the walls of the shaft. He didn't want the Rakghouls to be able to climb out at all, nor even come close to the exit.
Sooner than later, his other squadmates starting firing as well. It might've looked stupid for 4 soldiers to fire random blaster bolts down a dark shaft, but getting the job done was more important than how it's done.

Kunta's own weapon wasn't suited for such ranges. It would be useful once they closed in more to keep them at bay. Until then it would be a waste of ammo. The drones on the other hand had no problem closing to a suitable range. Well, no problem except the stream of fire coming from above them. They stayed closely clustered near the middle of the shaft. For one that would keep them out of range of the ghouls. It would also, hopefully, keep the clone team from shooting them.
The drones coordinated their fire, most of them concentrated on a ring of the shaft higher up, seeking to prevent any rakghouls from getting past & closing with the team. Others punched further down to aim at breaking up greater concentrations of the beasts. A fair few of those that dipped too low were taken out by rakghouls leaping from the walls above them & grabbing them on the way down.

One rakghoul managed to make its way out of the shaft and immediately leaped into the air, landing right beside Drez. The nasty creature took a deadly swipe with it's claws towards Drez. With his quick reaction time, he was able to duck backwards, saving himself in the process. The rakghoul immediately attacked a second time by slamming it's arms down towards Drez, who had ducked sideways out of the way just in time.
Vorik took a few shots at the rakghoul, guiding it's attention away from Drez. Oh, blast. I shouldn't have done that. Vorik thought with fear.
Still on the floor, Drez extracted his vibrosword and took a strong swipe towards the creature's legs, immediately cutting both legs clean off. The rakghoul tumbled to the ground as Drez stood up. Quickly, he sliced it's head off.
Drez gave the rakghoul a strong kick to make sure it wouldn't move at all. Once confirmed, he turned to Kunta. "So what's the status with these rakghouls?"

Firing one more wide burst through the doorway, she paused for a moment to check. There didn't seem to be any movement below, but it was rather hard to be certain when it looked like that bottom four or five meters of the shaft were filled solid is a range of brutalized ghoul bodies. It was not exactly a pleasant sight, even from a distance.
-Kunta I think we got them all. Unfortunately, think isn't good enough for the contract. We are going to have to go down there & make sure nothing is still breathing.
She did a quick count of the drones left. A fair number had been lost when the rakghouls had made the final push, but there were still enough to ferry the team & herself down into the shaft. Which was useful, as between the blaster fire & the rakghoul claws, there wasn't much of the original stairwell left.
-Kunta I say we ride the drones down close enough & just set the whole mess on fire. Let it burn out, then check again. Everything here is stone & ice anyway, so it shouldn't cause much trouble.
If the team agreed it wouldn't take much time to have the proper compounds sent up from the ship in order to set the blaze well enough to deal with all the bodies. Fortunately, she had managed to take a wonderfully wide range of samples & scans for the intel people back home. Some good had come from the clone team wandering off after all. That meant she didn't have to crawl down into that charnel house to do so now. It hadn't been part of the original mission, but once it had been logged in her HUD, the intel people back home had offered her a very nice additional purse if she could get the scans & a better purse for actual samples. Getting paid three times for one job was a day well spent.

Drez had obviously figured that Kunta wasn't here just to exterminate rakghouls, but he didn't put much thought into it. As long as they've acquired the ancient artifact they needed, their only mission was to now get off of Rhen Var and back to Kamino. He didn't care whatever side missions she had. Even if she ever thought of exterminating them as well, they're more than prepared to counter it.
"Alright then, Kunta. You and me will ride down there a light these ghouls on fire." He then turned to his squad. "You three will wait here." He muted his speakers and switched to the squad's private comms. "Don't let that artifact out of your sight."

As expected, it didn't take long for the pit full of bodies to be adequately doused in the correct chemicals & set on fire. Watching the pile burn down tooks a bit longer, fortunately the rising smoke was thin enough by the time it reached the door (the only way it could leave the shaft) that as long as the team remained sitting, they remained clear of it. Of course, the in draft to feed the fire meant that the air they were sitting in was every bit as cold as that outside. Kunta helped pass at least some of the time by collecting the other ghoul bodies scattered through the citadel. Shoving them down into the fires as well.
Eventually the pile burned down to bare rubble & guttered out. A quick trip to the bottom revealed only a lot of blackened bones & charred stone. At out point, there had probably been a nest leaving off to one side, but anything that had been in the relatively small shaft had been burned away. The pictures of the bottom of the shaft were all the proof the team would need to collect on their paycheck for this mission. After a fairly brief farewell to the clone team, Kunta rejoined her partner on their shuttle, leaving the ice world behind. The clone team had stated from the beginning of the mission that they would be able to find their own way off the planet. Either way Kunta was ready to be done with their constant bickering.

Midnight squad watched as the shuttle got smaller with each passing second as Kunta left them behind on Rhen Var. They decided to make a light-hearted moment of so they stood in line, gave a soldier's acute, beforeand waving goodbye at the shuttle, knowing that Kunta wouldn't even see it.
"Alright, now what?" Jacquelyn asked as she rolled her eyes, still waving at the shuttle.
Drez put his arm down and headed towards the Citadel's exit. "I've called for a ship as soon as we arrived on the planet. It's supposed to be here soon." The other 3 squadmates followed closely behind him.
"You know, I have my suspicions towards Kunta. I mean, why would she just be here to exterminate rakghouls? There's something behind all of this." Izmar voiced his suspicions as they trekked through the snow.
"Relax Izzy. If anything happens in the future, we'll be able to track her down." Vorik reassured. He hid a tracking device on the ship just in case something ever happened to one of them. There were many case scenarios on their minds, but the main one was if there was any future rakghoul outbreak on any planet, the first one they'd look for Kunta.
A Nu-class shuttle landed in the Harbor adjacent to the lighthouse as the 4 soldiers exited the citadel. "Crazy to think that this used to be a ship harbor. Am I right?" Drez asked. The whole planet was plunged into an Ice Age and there seemed to be no end to it in the future.
Moments later, they departed the icy planet. They had secured the artifact they needed, which was all that really mattered to them. Next destination: Kamino.
