"Varonat?" Nem said somewhat surprised. He shouldn't be. From what he could recall about the planet it was largely covered in dense jungle, a fertile world upon which to make a home. No, the reason it surprised him was because he had heard mention of it recently in one of the intelligence reports that had crossed his desk. "That's in the Anoat Sector, yes? I've heard rumours of rebels operating out of that region of space. A First Order ambassadorial attachment was recently attacked on Bespin. My understanding is that the insurgents are politically motivated, they take issue with Imperial-fascist governance, as though the previous Republic's democracy was so morally superior. I wouldn't expect them to take an interest in your settlement, but these sorts of groups are known to attract pirates and smugglers, so I would not be surprised if the occasional undesirable ventures near your territory."
Nem was all too familiar with those types of characters. As part as his mission to gather intelligence on the state of the galaxy, the Intendant had spent a fair bit of time traveling aboard a pirate frigate known as the Cutlass, belonging to Captain Arkhan of the Bloodrage Pirates. He had mingled with every sort of underworld criminal. Odd to find himself on the other side of things now. Of course, it wasn't personal, but his people were always going to come before the infidel friends and acquaintances he had built up along the way. Ruthless, but necessary.
"You know the Empire often puts out a bounty on infidels that engage in that behaviour. If you find any in your territory you should consider capturing them and turning them in. I recognize there is little we should want from them in terms of technology or goods, but their currency can be used to purchase influence. It is most amusing to see how easily they turn on one another when profit is placed before them."

Esthh nodded. There were always dregs in this galaxy, the fact that there were some nearby did not surprise him.
::I don’t know if they would be fool hardy enough to attract the attention of a matalok, but if they attacked an Imperial Ambassador they must be that foolish. I will have my warriors keep an eye out for them. We don’t need the same rebels spreading about that there are Vong on Varonat. I have had some experience with these people and credits, it is impressive what they will do for them. Quite useful in certain instances I agree...it wouldnt be bad to have a few infidel machines for subtleties sake either...::
Esthh’s face changed slightly.
::I suppose you might wonder why I don’t use Yuuzhan before our name. Vong is often used to to describe those without the favor of the gods. Well...it would seem that we now fit that definition quite accurately. War lost, Shimraa’s lies...the very question of the gods existence...Vong seems fitting for our kind now. We are no longer, if we ever were, blessed.::

Nem's lip curled cruelly. "Heh! Of course not. Cursed is more like it." His eyes sacs puffed in rhythm with his pulse as his blood warmed with good humour. There was nothing a member of Domain Yin enjoyed more than wallowing in self loathing and bitter sorrow. The mood passed as quickly as it came upon him, and he grew more serious. "I was curious, but thought it impolite to inquire. We all bare the weight of certain harsh realities in our own way. I can understand this new custom."
Behind the villips recreation of Esthh's head, Nem could see his faithful retainer Scab doing its best to direct a group of its kin as they followed around the newly arrived Morodin in the background, leaving glistening tracks of nutrient rich slime. The Intendant made a mental note to get some of these for Garqi. If he could increase the yield of the Imperial caf fields he could make a killing. Having direct control over the First Order's food supply might not have been as glamorous as running the shipyards at Kuat, but you would be surprised how quickly a Moff fell in line when their shipments of grain started becoming fewer and further between. That reminded him.
"By the way, I hope you don't mind but I should probably mention I'm borrowing your Master Shaper for an excursion to the colony on Ahch-To, since my own ran off to play gardener on Ossus." That wasn't exactly what happened, nor was he actually upset with her. Mira Yim was a hard Yuuzhan Vong to stay mad at. "I need Traa’iin's help, as you might expect, to solve a shaping problem the colony has. Their farmland stinks." The Intendant pounded a fist against his chest. "You have my word I will do my best to return him to you intact. I don't expect we'll run into any trouble."

::Traa’iin has been most useful. He lacks the vision that some younger ones do, but he knows his shaping and has been very helpful in achieving goals.::
Esthh paused for a moment.
::I can spare him for a short time. In a bit I may have some enhancements for the Ag Beetles. Though the samples will have to be obtained still...What is so special about this Ossus?::

"Nothing really." And yet... "Well, I shouldn't say nothing. You'll remember I made mention that there was some infighting amongst the Yuuzhan Vong I represent just prior to your arrival at Anobis. One of the last wise decisions the Praetorite Council had made before things fell apart was to support the resumption of the Ossus Project. The original project started by Master Shaper Nei Rin and Jedi Master Kol Skywalker failed due to sabotage by the Sith, but the premise was to use our peoples advanced bioengineering and terraforming abilities to repair the planet's biosphere, which was damaged in some great calamity thousands of years prior. It was a goodwill mission intended to portray our people to the galaxy in a different light than the alien zealots obsessed with pain and death most see us as." While admittedly that described a population segment of his people, he was pleased that it no longer represented the majority. "Years ago while attempting to gather intelligence on the now defunct Sith Empire, a member of my Domain risked everything to confirm the presence of their Empire on Korriban, and made the ultimate sacrifice to do so. The Sith incurred a blood debt from Domain Yin that day, one I fully intended to collect when the opportunity presents itself."The lethal edge to Nem's tone was unmistakable. Uzas Yin, the member the Intendant had spoken of, had represented the future of Domain Yin. Nem's expectation had been that one day his fellow Intendant would eventually take over as the leader of their domain. Instead he had been executed in the middle of a public street, no quarter given. That day the Sith had made an enemy of Domain Yin for time eternal. An ink black bead of moisture rolled down the Intendant's chin, seeping from a lip he hadn't realized he had been biting hard enough to draw blood."I thought it prudent to cultivate allies amongst the Sith's natural enemies, the Jedi, and thus encouraged the Praetorite Council to resume the Ossus Project in hopes of reestablishing positive relations. They agreed and I was sent as a political envoy to Ossus, where I approached the Jedi Lords located there about renewing the Project. Their High Lord, a human by the name of Lucien Malvern, agreed and once more the Yuuzhan Vong were given reign to use our technology to resume the Project and begin restoring the eco-sphere. The effort was headed up by Master Shaper Mira Yim. You'll remember I spoke of her and the pacifist Handmaidens of Yun-Ne'Shel? Well her religious inclinations aside, Mira is one of the most talented shapers I have ever met and by and large the right Yuuhan Vong for the job. The Praetorite devoted the vast majority of its shaper and worker caste to the cause."He paused, before adding bitterly. "Then as I've mentioned before, we were betrayed by one of our own and things fell apart. Without the Praetorite governing body to keep us united, lines of communication and contact quickly broke down. When last I spoke with Mira, she had petitioned the Jedi Lords for sanctuary for the Yuuzhan Vong working on the Ossus Project. My understanding is that the High Lord was so pleased with their work he granted the Yuuzhan Vong lands of their own and even gave Mira a noble title amongst their Order."

Esthh ran the issue through his mind, having shaping be sabotaged wouldnt endear anyone to their people’s cause. Even if it were common knowledge that sabotage occurred, the well was still poisoned. However it seemed that the Jedi were quite pleased. A net neutral at best.
::I see. So the Force users are still causing our people grief. I wonder how much grief they cause the other beings of this galaxy…::
He shook his head, accurately depicted by the villip.
::No matter. It seems as long as enemies are generated by our hand or others, the defense of our people is still my first priority. Others are secondary at this point. Even though some are very close seconds… I hope Traa’iin will be able to help. It would be nice for our people to catch a break, though I suspect we may be doomed to fight forever.::

Esthh's comment on Force users reflected Nem's own views to a degree. The history of this galaxy was nearly as blood soaked as the one they had come from, rife with examples of genocide and destruction committed at the hands or behest of Force users. The barely understood energy field was a double edged coufee, as likely to turn on the wielder as those they chose to wield it against. To some extent he was elated his own people weren't burdened with a connection to those corrupting currents, though that was not to say all those with the power to use it were destined to become slaves to its unnatural whims. The Executor had the opportunity to meet several Force users of strong moral fibre that remained in control of their faculties. Stalwart champions of justice, such as the Imperial Knight Xeonon Solomon that the Intendant had befriended so many years ago, stood out in his mind. Mind you, they were infrequent and far between.
"Aye." His lips peeled back to bare a mouthful of crooked teeth curled into a wicked grin, as the Supreme Commander's pessimism served to warm the Intendant's bitter spirit. "Then it's a good thing we're so well suited to it." His glowing emerald eyes flicked upwards as he noticed the last few rays of sunlight on the horizon were slipping behind the trees as evening came upon the quaint little settlement. "I won't take up any more of your time, Esthh. There are matters to arrange if I am to meet Traa'iin in a timely manner, but before I let you go, one last question if you would humour me."
He probably should have led with this, but it had been important to gauge his fellow Yuuzhan Vong's mood before putting such a serious request before him.
"I have been summoned by the new Emperor of the First Order to a war council in Ravelin, the old Imperial capital on the Outer Rim world of Bastion. I suspect it is his intention to finally deal with the other claimants to his father's throne." His mood turned serious. "If Octavian is committed to this regicide, he may call upon the Yuuzhan Vong under my command to aid in the fighting to come. The fleet elements under my command are not insubstantial, yet my domain has always excelled more at the closely delivered coufee. However, if your forces were to join with mine, putting on full display the strength of a unified Yuuzhan Vong people, it would send a stronger message to the infidels. Both allied and arraigned against." The emerald light of Nem's implants gave way to the green of greed. "As I said, I want a bigger seat at the table. Combining our military might would prove a useful chip with which to bargain, and it goes without saying that command in battle would fall to you, as befitting your station as Supreme Commander. What say you?"

Esthh had suspected that something like this would happen, but it was not an unforeseen occurrence. Having more forces was always desireable, especially to a military commander. The political gamble was there, the rewards potentially great, the potential loss was lower. Their peoples fate as an independent organization was tied to the First Order and the outcomes of this internal war. If he refused, it could be seen as sedition or treason, even if he had not personally sworn loyalty to this new emperor. It didn’t matter if the new Emperor chose to deal with them immediately as traitors, or after the war as traitors. Even if there were a declared neutrality it would be tantamount to political suicide. They would be outcast. No. The course was set, and there was nothing that could be done about it. Fate. That is what it was called. Going back to the Unknown Regions with so little resources wasnt an option. Going forwards boldly, even if it might help this intendant gain more power, was the only way forwards.
::I say that I and my forces will be there. They are not what they could be. The ship wombs have yet to give birth to new ships, but I will bring what I have. Where should our forces combine?::

Exactly what he had been hoping for. Trust was not something that came easily to the Intendant, but he was beginning to suspect that Supreme Commander Esthh Krazmir was a Yuuzhan Vong, or simply Vong as he insisted, he could count on. The future was always in flux; however, facing it together with other wilful and driven members of his species made things a little less bleak.
"For now, just be ready to depart on short notice." He reached up, grabbing a loose fold of skin that served as his cloakers hood, pulling it up over his bald scalp ridges until his features were lined in shadow. "Once I have the official word I'll contact you at Varonat and we'll organize ourselves wherever the Imperials want to muster their fleets. Whatever you can bring to bear will help, especially if we are to give an accounting of our capabilities to the infidels. Right now my domain can field a Miid Ro'ik warship, four advanced scout ships, and twenty two yorik-vec assault cruisers. All have been shaped to carry additional yorik-et complements."
Sliding a hand down into a robeskin satchel on his hip, the First Prefect removed his starfish shaped gnullith rebreather and slid the biot over the lower half of his face, allowing its proboscis to extend uncomfortably down his esophagus as the creature sealed over his mouth and nose stub with a wet squelch. Steam hissed through the gnullith's gills as the Intendant exhaled a hot breath of filtered air.
"Listen, my domain may have some martial leanings, but you're the warrior caste here. Void warfare is more your area of expertise than mine; however, I have spent a great deal of time living among these infidels and I know how they think and have seen how they fight. Too often these Imperials rely on overwhelming force and numbers to win the day. Their battle doctrine is rigid and often doesn't allow for the unconventional." The gnullith puckered as Nem sucked in a breath, then chortled throatily, his dark purple eye sacs puffing with dark humour. "But I suspect you have a few unconventional strategies of your own. We'll make them bleed, Esthh, and in the process remind our allies why we are better friends than foes. When the dust of fratricide settles, we'll collect our due. If there is anything your people on Varonat should want for or need, we will be well positioned to make a few demands. I doubt this Octavian will have much stomach for war after slaying his kin."

::I will have my ships on standby for the call. We will see if this gamble rolls our way. You will have to excuse me however, it seems a small crisis has occurred in the local village that requires my attention.::Esthh signed off and the villip inverted, protecting its squishy innards once again.
The captain bowed to the Prefect. "It seems that my warriors may be needed elsewhere Prefect Yin. I wish you a bountiful harvest and the quick but painful death of your enemies."
The captain stood and bowed again as he gave the signal for his men to finish turning over the new agricultural beasts and return to the ship. Shortly after the air seemed to shiver slightly above the ship, and it lifted silently, leading for its home in the stars.

Nem watched Captain Gla and his men depart, following them with his emerald eyes until their coral craft vanished from visible sight. When they were gone he returned to his domicile to make a few last minute arrangements, before boarding his personalized yorik-vec, programming in a set of coordinates for Admumar into the navibrain. As the tall-yor dropped, the Intendant guided the Bleeding Orifice up and out of Safaeyet, streaking towards orbit on the wings of gravity.

With the First Order civil war reaching its most fractious and tumultuous moments, it was no longer safe for the Yuuzhan Vong under the protection of Domain Yin to be so spread out.
It was with great reluctance that the Chazrach colony on Anubis was abandoned. The simple minded reptoids packed up their things and boarded coral ships bound for Garqi, to eek out a new life within smaller but safer borders. Safaeyet had been a home to them, but now they said their farewells, leaving the human colonists to whatever fate awaited them in this uncertain galaxy. Within a week of receiving word, all traces of the Yuuzhan Vong and chazrachs had vanished from Anubis, leaving some to question if they had even ever been there at all.
