I know what the difference is-- in theory. We could rephrase my question as, "can you tell me a maneuver with your lightsaber where it makes it substantially easier to have a curve-grip saber than a straight-grip saber?" So in other words, is there a practical aspect to that subtle difference?
To give you some background on me, Stormro, I use a double-ended lightsaber pike variant. The differences between my lightsaber and a regular lightsaber are pronounced; you can't even come close to doing some of the same moves with one as the other (it goes both ways). Lightsabers are, in my mind, what MAKE the Star Wars Universe. I love everything about 'em. It's of considerable interest to me to speculate about this stuff. And I'm personally convinced that, when it comes to fighting in the JvS setting, that innovation is the key to victory. (Also, feel free to call me Ryu)
Using a curve grip is innovative if it makes a true difference compared to regular. So that's what I'd really like to know-- is it worth it?

I think that the best answer that I could really give you is that in my past experience no, but I will add that as a result of this conversation and some other things that I have been thinking about I am intending to try and see if I can't begin taking better advantage of the differences between the hilts to innovate some new ways to use the Makashi-style sabre to better effect.
I don't think that, in general, the Makashi hilt is meant to make a massive, noticeable difference in useability, and that instead it is meant more to tune the standard sabre to more perfectly suit certain uses. As I said above, however, I would definitely be interested in seeing if I could pull some more noticeable effects out of the hilt's differences.

Go for it, then, I'm rooting for you. Anything that makes us better is good.

I would've put down curved hilt if it were an option, but i just opted for standard assuming that covered it

Freedom and security are not separate. To have one is to have the other, know them both well.

Kinda hard to beat a classic, even though I've got a few extras to support the ones I have.
On that note, I'd be more than happy to design some sabers for y'all. Shoot a pm if you're interested.
