Medical Frigate, Lazarus.
=Dr. Lucien Darius=
Lucien looked on as the patient was borne on a stretcher, hooked up to some bulky machinery which was being pushed alongside the stretcher. When they had found him, there was only the faintest spark of life still remaining within the man, but he was somehow still alive despite the large wound in his chest. The damage was severe, but they had the finest and most cutting edge medical technology available here, and they would bring this man back. As long as there was even the faintest glimmer of life within him, they could do it, and failure was not an option.
After all, Lucien owed this man his life...

The surgery had lasted for hours, and it was only the first of several operations that were required, but none were more important than this one. The patient's heart had been damaged by what Dr. Darius guessed could only be a lightsaber wound, and it would require more than bacta to repair the damage to the heart itself. The operation was to insert a small device that would keep the blood flowing through the patient's veins while the heart itself was out of commission, no small feat even with all the highly advanced medical technology available to them here.
The hours had passed and the first operation had been successful, but there was no time to relax now. The patient had been stabilized, enough so that work on his heart could begin, but this was only the start. Many more hours would be spent in surgery before the Knight was out of danger.
As the surgeons washed up, Lucien couldn't help but think back, almost a year ago when he had been working in one of the hospitals near the Jedi Temple on Anobis. He remembered the attack on the planet, remembered running for his life from the burning hopsital with hostile soldiers on his tail. He remembered the Knight coming seemingly out of nowhere, stopping the attackers and then leading the doctor to safety. He had sworn to pay that Knight back, even though he had been told not to worry about it(although he recalled it being said in a much cruder fashion).
Now he had the chance, and he was making good on his promise. Lucien owed Atton his life, and he was going to pay his debt in full.

Lucien's surgical team had begun the second round of operations on Atton's heart, while the doctor himself stood outside the operating room. While he wasn't a surgeon himself, much of his work throughout his career had focused on the repairing and even replacing certain vital organs. Most of the technology and techniques being used right now had been developed and researched by Lucien. Back on Anobis, his research had never been given as much attention as he felt was deserved, which was one of the reasons why he had been so excited to work on board the Lazarus. While his main focus had been on saving a life and repaying a debt of honor, he couldn't deny that the opportunity to see his life's work finally being given the attention it deserved and and applied to a real life patient was quite the thrill.

Eight days had passed since Atton's arrival on the Lazarus, and since then it had been almost non stop work for Lucien's team. He had spent the better part of the last week or so going over his notes, briefing the surgeons on the latest procedure and keeping the ship's director up to speed on their progress. He had hardly taken the time to sleep or eat and though dark spots had appeared under his eyes and his appearance overall had become more bedraggled, he barely noticed his fatigue as his excitement grew. They were so close to finishing, to giving the Jedi Knight his second lease on life. He couldn't afford to be tired or hungry now.
The last operation was today. Parts of Atton's heart were now made of a special type of synthetic fiber, along with a few bio-stabilizer and pacemaker implants to keep the heart in rhythm. So far, there were no signs of rejection or other adverse effects, and this final operation would be to seal everything up and take Atton off the many life support machines. This would be the most dangerous operation yet, since if the new synthetic heart didn't start working right away, it would likely lead to Atton's death...

Lucien stared, unbelieving at the monitors, which were silent as they recorded no heartbeat. Years of careful research, planning and endlessly checking and rechecking his notes were seemingly for nothing as he watched helplessly while the other doctors repeatedly attempted to stimulate Atton's new heart. The doctor closed his eyes, hoping, praying that a miracle would occur as the team of doctors frantically worked against the clock...
Atton felt like he was floating, but when he opened his eyes, he was standing on solid ground. Before him stretched an endless, rolling plain under a cloudless sky. Maybe he had finally made it to heaven? Or wait...Harmony...that's what it was called. The Living Force, or something like that. He had never pretended to be an expert on the nature of death and where one's soul went after leaving the mortal coil. So in his mind, he was either dead or on the galaxy's most boring spice trip.
Heh heh...spice trip. He couldn't help but smirk at that.
He turned his head when he heard a voice, but he looked all around him and saw no one else around here. The voice sounded again, as if it was somehow all around him, echoing across the field.
"It wasn't your time...
Atton grimaced. What the hell had they meant by that? Was he dead now?
"It wasn't your time...you must return...
Atton started looking around more quickly, as if trying to spot whoever it was that was speaking."What the hell are you talking about?!"
No answer. Atton closed his eyes as he felt himself seemingly slipping away once more.
Lucien and the rest of the doctors stared at the monitors, the room completely silent except for the steady beep beep beep. Just seconds from disaster, Atton's heart had started beating again. All his vitals were returning to normal, and though he wasn't likely to wake up right away, he was out of danger.
They had done it. They had brought a man back to life from the very brink of death. Lucien finally allowed himself to relax, if just for a moment. There was still a lot of work to do...

It was a few days after the operation before Atton finally began to regain consciousness. For the first few times he awoke, it was only for a minute or two before slipping back out, but each time he awoke, it was for a little longer. It was on the fourth day after the surgery that the former Jedi Knight finally opened his eyes.
He felt extremely weak, like he had been asleep for several days(which obviously, he had), and was just waking up from one hell of a nap. Though his vision was blurry, he could barely make out that he was in some kind of medical facility, probably a hospital. Where exactly that was, though, he could only guess. And he didn't have enough energy for that. It wasn't long before he felt himself slipping back into unconsciousness.
Atton woke again, though he had no way to know how long it had been. This time, he didn't feel nearly as weak as he had the first few times he had regained consciousness, and he was able to open his eyes and focus. With an effort, he raised his arm and ran a hand through his hair, grimacing as he tested his limbs. He still felt weak, but he was now alert and could now think coherently.
He groaned as he tried to sit up to get a better look at his surroundings, but a wave of dizziness hit him as he tried to raise his head and he fell back, breathing a little heavily from the effort. It was at that moment when a nurse came in, and she quickly summoned Dr. Darius, who came rushing into the room.
Atton looked up as the doctor approached the side of the bed.
"How are you feeling?"Lucien kept his voice quiet as he spoke, but the elation at seeing his savior finally awakened after such a harrowing surgery was difficult for him contain.
Atton gave a little shrugging motion and closed his eyes."Shredded..."He opened his eyes again."Where am I, anyway?"
Lucien smiled and continued to keep his voice down."You're on board a ship called the Lazarus. It's a medical frigate. Top of the line medical care and equipment."There was much Lucien wanted to tell Atton, but since he was still recovering from a major surgery, he felt it was wise to lay off for the moment and only tell him the basics.
Atton sighed and closed his eyes again. The last thing he remembered was getting stabbed and then darkness overtaking him. But he had no idea how long ago that had been, or how long he had been here. For all he knew, it had been months. Opening his eyes once more, he turned to look at the doctor."How...how long was I out?"
Lucien answered quickly."You were out for almost two weeks. Your heart was badly damaged."The doctor paused for a moment to let it sink in, and when Atton didn't say anything, he took it a sign to continue."We were able to repair some of the damage, and what we couldn't repair, we compensated with some implants and some experimental technology. But it was touch and go for awhile."
Atton continued to stay silent, contemplating what the doctor had just told him. They must have recovered him from Anobis after the fighting and brought him here. Why they would spend so much time and probably money just to repair him like that was beyond him, but hey, maybe someone had been feeling generous. To be honest, though, he wasn't sure what to think about any of this. He sighed heavily and closed his eyes.
Lucien turned and nodded at the nurse, who moved to the other side of the bed to check on some the monitors."I know it must be a lot to take in. But trust me, we'll make sure you're taken care of until you get your strength back. I owe you that much, you know." With that, Lucien left the room.
Atton was soon drifting back off to sleep, still too tired to really give his situation much thought.

Over the next few days, Lucien explained to Atton a little bit about the surgery and about why it had been him in particular that had been picked for the operation. Atton found it odd that someone would go to such lengths to save his life, even if he had saved the doctor from certain doom himself. Still, it seemed he had been given a second lease on life, even if he had no idea what to do now. The real problem was that he was officially listed as KIA, according to the doctor. That would be problematic if he tried to reenter the galaxy.
He couldn't worry about that right now. Right now, he needed to focus on being stronger. His grand re-entrance into the galaxy could wait just a little longer.
