Twenty minutes later, the door chime rings. Standash is in white senate robes, less formal but still enough to show her beauty. He long blonde hair in a bun at the top of her head, with a few strands toward the font of her face. Light red lipstick and a light blue eye-shadow to bring out her eyes. She was here for business. This conversation would take everything she could. What she we be purposing would be hard for Koronov to take, but he was a smart man. She hoped he would see that what she was asking was best for all the people of the Republic,

Koronov glanced up as the door chime to his office suite rang, muffled by the two closed doors and the waiting room that lay between his office and the outer door. The door was unlocked, if Princess Thul had tried it, but she was being properly polite, and he respected that. His advisers were still huddled over their datapads and reports, finalizing their assessments of the political climate. There had been some conversation in the last 20 minutes, but nothing of substance, yet.
Exchanging glances with Aylee, he stood up, opened the door of his private office, leaving it ajar behind him, and crossed the waiting room to peer through the one-way glass in the door. Standash was alone, but her posture indicated this was probably all business, and not a social call. Opening the door, he smiled. "Good afternoon, Senator. Do come in." He said as he held the door for her. "My staff," he nodded toward his office, "is quite busy, but if you'll follow me, we can talk in private...." His voice trailed off as he led the way to one of the side conference rooms.
Dmitri was wearing one of him plain black suits, and the number of creases in it implied he'd been wearing it for days since it was last pressed. Aside from the absence of his normal Corellian green tie, there was nothing out of the ordinary about his appearance.

Thank you for meeting me on such short notice, I know could not have been easy to fit me in. The capital has been everything I have read about. She spoke with total confidence, not as you would expect someone of her age. It was the Organa blood in her. She was prepared. The days sense the party have done you well. It was an exaggeration, and both knew it. He looked tiered and stressed. The state of the republic was taking its toll on him.

"It's not problem at all." Koronov reassured her, cracking his toothy Corellian grin as he closed the door behind her, and adjusted the sound dampeners so that, although anyone passing by in the waiting room outside could see them, their actual conversation would be private. "I always have time for friends of the Corellian people." There was a small table and six rustic chairs inside the conference room, but Dmitri seemed in no hurry to sit down. He laughed fractionally at her last comment, knowing it to be flattery. If anything, he looked decidedly worse.
"Well, thank you, but I sensed the urgency in your message. What's going on, and how can I help?"

Our guests seem to have come showing quite the parade. Hapes has grown in their isolation it seems. This was the reason for urgency, yes but Koronov didn't need to know that yet. I have heard that you were looking to move to declare the Supreme Chancellor's seat officially vacant, and that you were looking to take that seat. Can you confirm this? It was a question, yes. But she knew it to be true. It didn't take much to know that.

Koronov raised an eyebrow. The first part was true, for certain, but he thought he had been discrete about the second part. He quickly realized she wasn't speaking from any precise knowledge from within his inner circle. It was no great leap of reasoning to identify Koronov as one of the most likely Senators to run for the Chancellorship. He had the seniority, and the name recognition, and the Core Worlds connections and finances, and had close non-human friends. He didn't have to say a single word for the rumors to start flying. It was obvious.
"Many Senators feel that such a motion should be made, and will vote to support it, absent a very good explanation from Republic Intelligence." He replied, choosing his words with care. "If such a motion is not made by another member of the Senate within the next few days, I intend to make one myself." He smiled, watching her face and her reaction carefully. He trusted her more than most, in part because she had not been on Coruscant long enough to embed herself too deeply in the corruption, but the state of the Republic dictated caution. "Before I answer your second question, what do you think of our absent leaders? What should be done? Should we replace them now, while we still can, or should we go on pretending that nothing is wrong?"
And what had she meant about guests? He'd been in his office all day, and had not yet heard about the arrivals in orbit, thanks to the ineptitude of the Senate news channels.

Her focus didn't waiver, she expected this response. His wording of the question was nice. She could answer honestly. Her eyes still stunning, but now a silver hue. Her thoughts going a mile a minute. Even if found, it would be time for removal, not that we should give up the search. The republic has changed and has passed the old guard by. The republic has learned much in this time without a head. As the organization falters, some systems find strength that they always had, but never needed. Planets continued to turn, people were fed, and bureaucracy maintained its place. There is a change coming, surely you feel it. I am guessing your Jedi friends have sensed it. The move will be made and new leadership will be chosen and put in place quickly. Because it must be so. The Republic has been decapitated long enough as is. The question is, where will this leadership come from? Is this enough of an answer to your question to get a response to mine? She wasn't speaking a prophecy, though it may sound like it. She wasnt Force sensitive but she was observant, always aware always thinking.

Koronov nodded gravely. He was of the same opinion, but he had wanted to hear her true thoughts, rather than biasing her response with his own opinions. The old leadership, if they still lived, and if they had not been forcibly imprisoned, deserved nothing less than censure, and probably a trial for treason.
He cracked another smile. "Yes, that's exactly what I wanted to hear." He sighed. "I have spent most of my adult life building and preparing myself to someday run for the Chancellorship, and if the Force wills, to take on that mantle and lead the Republic as best I am able. I declined to run in the last election cycle, to prevent unnecessary divisions in the Senate, and ever since, I have been planning and working to align my resources and my resume for this election cycle." The troubled Senator cast a quick glance at the floor before continuing. "But with everything that has happened, I am no longer confident that it would be wise. Even if I were to run -- and this must not leave this room -- I fear there are hidden forces within the Republic who would lash out and destroy me. It might be career suicide, or it might be literal suicide. And I'm no good to Corellia or anyone else if I'm dead."
The tension was evident in his voice, and he paused again. "I'm just not sure what to do anymore. I can't sit and do nothing, but I see no safe course of action. I am hoping that calling for an election will force those operating in the shadows of the Republic to tip their hands to the rest of us." He wasn't sure why he was telling her all this. Sighing again, he tilted his head, and examined her face closely, his gaze captured by her radiant silver eyes. "What do you think I should do, Princess Thul? I would greatly value your honest opinion."

Though you were not one of the old guard of the republic, one of the ones responsible for this mess, and your fellow senators respect you; the people see you as the same old thing as before. Someone attacked you over the senator from Ryloth, and held you responsible. A notion of nonsense to anyone with reason, yes, but electorates do not tend to vote rationally. Senators that support your election directly would be risking their own necks to their people at home. You can't carried the votes on reputation anymore, and you do not have the finances to buy it. You wont win as the primary on a ticket. But the respect you generate with enough senators will make it hard for the next Chancellor to govern opposite of you. Without you on board we will have more of the same. More do nothing senate, and the people of the republic will suffer for it.
She held nothing back and spoke the truth. Even in her youth she could see the way politics had become in the Republic. If he was truely honest with himself he would see it too.
The only hope for the future of the republic is something new, and something groundbreaking. Unfortunately, as I alluded to before, this will take what is left of the old to agree. We both know without influence, that will not happen.
She let her statements hang in the air, seeing what he takes at this point.

Standash was brave, and Dmitri had to give her credit. Most politicians would not have stood still for such a message, even if it was painfully true. And most junior Senators of her stature would not have dared to speak in such a way to a member of the Senate elite. But Dmitri was not like most career politicians, and Standash was already gaining a reputation for knowing when and how to speak her mind to her fellow Senators.
Instead of reacting angrily, Koronov simply frowned, his disappointment obvious, but manifesting itself only in sadness. "I don't put much stock in my attacker, he was one lone man with bad information who made a bad decision for what he thought were noble reasons. That is why I declined to press charges." The middle-aged Corellian countered. "But I fear your overall assessment is correct. I have wondered for weeks whether I had any real chance to separate my own reputation from the death spiral of my former political allies." He nodded respectfully to the beautiful young woman.. "Thank you for sharing the view from your position. It is perspective I badly needed to hear." She had given a very complete answer, he realized -- almost as if she already had a solution in mind.
He paused, his face once more taking on a curious look. "So who would you propose instead? Yourself, perhaps?"

He had found the reason she had come. She wanted his endorsement. With that, her appeal and skill, and her finacial backers it would be a slam dunk. But she wasn't ready to give it all away yet.
Well I will respond with the same question you gave me. What do you think of the idea if i did? How would that play out?

His eyes twinkled as she turned the question back on him. She hadn't denied it, and he had a strong feeling now that this was the true reason she had come to see him, but at the same time, deep down, he was worried. Not because she couldn't do the job, but because he worried she might be jumping too quickly into the deep end of Republic politics. Those were dangerous waters to swim in, no matter who you were.
"Well, you would have the advantages of being a relative outsider to the Senate, and so it would be very hard for anyone to accuse you of being complicit in failures that began long before you took office. So you would have that advantage over me. And, like me, you are from a trusted Core World that makes up the backbone of the Republic, and so it would not be so very hard for you to get the other Core Worlds to back you." He smiled. "So on those counts, you would do well. And I have no doubt you could do the job, if it were given to you."
He paused, before delivering the not-so-good part of his assessment. "However, as for how it would play out, I would be just as worried for you as I am for myself. We don't know what is going on behind the shadows, or why the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor have gone missing. How do we know that whomever is responsible for that, would not make you or I their very next victim?" He frowned. "We need to know what is going on, plain and simple."

Do you think we have time to wait senator? Information takes time, and that we have run out of... He knew her intentions, there was no more beating around the bush. Yes, I will be seeking the Chancellor's seat. There are always shadows, Mr. Koronov. They are not brought to light by fearing them or running from them. I would think your time with Jedi would have shown you that. We need to know what is going on, but we have no one in place to learn this information. Getting Jedi to help would be best, but without a Chancellor to turn the investigation over to them, how will they get that authority? We need a Chancellor As for making me their next victim... Let them try. My people are peaceful and I am young, but I am much stronger than I look. Fire now burning in her eyes. The mind behind them turning and plotting. I know that someone will try to make me their victim, whether the ones from before or new villains. They will come. And I will break them. The will fall before me, and before the republic. Like water on rock those that would see us made slaves to evil will break, and fall.
The fire slowly dims in her eyes, returning to their crystal blue nature. You never answered if you would support me in this move, or not?

"I said we need information." Koronov countered with emphasis. "I did not mean that we can afford to wait. We have zero time, but we have to play our cards carefully. One of the reasons I assembled my staff today, aside from the election, was to form a plan to draw out the shadows as quickly as possible." He sighed. "I have appealed to the Jedi for help, and they have long been friends and allies to me, but even they have been unwilling or unable to help this time around." He respected the fire that she was showing now. He was intentionally pushing her to see how she would respond. He knew some of the challenges the candidates would face. She had to be ready.
"I want to make sure that you understand how serious the stakes are in this game. You must be prepared to give your life for the Republic, if that is what it takes to bring a new era of stability to the Republic." He paused for a long moment, staring deeply into her eyes in search of any hesitation. "If you are committed to this, and you can answer my questions, then I will support you. But first, how do you plan to win the support of the non-human populations, especially those on the Rim? The speakers at the Ryloth gala said many nice things about inter-species relations, but the Republic needs a leader who will act, not just talk. Your enemies will paint you as a sheltered rich girl from the Core Worlds who knows nothing of their hardships."
He was not yet convinced, but he was willing to be won over, if she had a plan that was superior to his own.

Aid, medicine, food, Jobs mostly... I have also been busy following the party as well. Alderaan is wealthy yes, but more than the planet and government its people are as well. Investors that have been kept back by our self imposed isolation have been chomping at the bit. Once they were let loos they made beelines to the rim. They see the opportunities for them selves, these opportunities become good jobs in the rim. Goods and services are exchanged and with them ideas, The Galaxy is too small for terms like Core, Mid Rim, and Outer Rim to mean anything anymore, outside of star charts and navicomputers. We have also opened up Immigration policies. If a Rodian thinks he has a product or idea that will make him rich on Alderaan, he is welcome to try. These ideas are already happening for my world, expanding them to the Republic as a whole will reach them. For the Core woulds that would resent me for these ideas, they will suffer and fall behind the worlds that do economically. They will adapt, or fail. And those that are still trouble some? We bribe. I am not ignorant to the way the capital works. I have the backers I need to buy the votes of those that want to sell. Is that they way I want it to be? No. But that is a corruption i will use to fight it, and they will suffer for their greed in time. I have done my homework Senator, I have the votes in the outer rim, mid rim, and core.
This was as good of time as any to began to hint at what she really wants from him. The only place I don't glow bright as a star on is the question of experience... I have Ideas to cover this falt, but i would be interested in to hearing if you have any?

The same is true of immigration. You -- we -- may not be able to afford to wait for those initiatives to win support in the Rim." The ideas were well thought-out, although they were not quite the immediate fix he was hoping to hear. At her comment about bribery, however, Dmitri was taken aback, and worked hard to suppress his reaction. Outwardly, he just shook his head. "Bribery is not the answer, Princess. That is the same mistake that so many of your peers have made when they arrived here. They saw the corruption, and they began to emulate it. And so, with each generation, instead of being better politicians than their predecessors, nothing changes. Buying friendships creates the expectation of future payoffs. As soon as your money stops flowing, the leeches find a new host. If you bribe your way to the top, all of your support will abandon you at the first sign of hardship." He sighed. "If you are going to buy the Chancellorship, I don't want to know about it, or participate. It hasn't been easy, but I got where I am today, and have stayed in office as long as I have, because I earned trust with the Corellian people. I did it at every economic level, and because my constituents -- and their friends on other worlds -- know that I will help people because I care about them. Yes, I offer many types of aid to people in need, and I have participated in relief efforts more than once, and yes, those people are more likely to vote for me as a result, but I did it because it was the right thing to do. Never lose sight of that. When you forget why you are helping people, and do it only to preserve your own position, the outward results may look the same, but those relationships don't last because they aren't sincere, and that is when a Senator's humanity dies and he becomes another heartless cog in the bureaucracy." The Corellian stopped, almost surprised at the fervor of his own words, and he shook his head again. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to rant at you. But take it from an old man, corruption always comes back to bite you in the end." He cracked a smile. "Getting back to the experience question, I would recommend that you find someone you trust, someone who can balance your ticket with the necessary experience, and ask them to be your Vice Chancellor. That is what I had planned to do, in order to make up for my own weaknesses. My ideal running mate would have been someone from the Outer Rim, of a non-human species, and who is much younger and less experienced than me, but who had proven themselves in the Coruscanti political scene. Someone like Belf'ima of Ryloth, who filled in so capably in Senator Crom'nen's absence." He mentioned her only as if she were an example, but in reality Belf'ima was his top pick. He was testing the name out, to see what sort of reaction it brought, even though he knew he was unlikely to run for Chancellor this time around.

You misunderstand me Senator. I am just not being naive. There is no bribe, i am just following through on how they will be taken by those with less than questionable character. I have donated aid directly to go to the governments most in need. The ones with honor have accepted them as loans, though my House never expects repayment. They will use them as they are intended. Building roads, schools, ports, infrastructure. I am not so naive to think this is how it will all be used. Some, much even, will go into the pockets of the senators here, or their so called leaders at home. To them this will be a bribe. They are welcome to take it as such for now, and if they chose to believe I am in agreement with them they are welcome too, for now. They will soon learn the error of that mistake. The princess' eyes showed a fire at the thought of punishing that corruption, not as a threat but a promise. As to time frame. This process has been going on since before I arrived here. The trade and investment have already began to show fruit. My House and my planet has been given a gift of prosperity, we have chosen to share it. My backers agree.
I might as well tell you the reason I she emphasized the word ended Alderaan's self imposed exile from the republic. I did it because I have come to save it. I came to be Chancellor. The corruption has become to much, I could not stand it anymore. It has to end. So i have been plotting on how to achieve this goal.. I have the votes from the Rims, I have them confirmed if I solve one little thing. I have the votes from the Core and Colonies, if i can provide one more thing. Luckly the thing missing from both is the same. I need a Vice who will give my ticket experience that people can trust. I need one man. She had planned on running the circle a bit more, but he had forced her hand. I need you. Senator Koronov i want you to be my running mate as Vice Chancellor. The Republic will need your leadership soon, and I will need you as well. Her face stone serious. She would be able to win without him, yes. But it would be much harder, and she would be unable to win the way she wanted. After her election it would take more to unite the people without him. That was time the people of the republic didn't have.

Koronov slowly nodded, and the pace of his head moments quickened as Standash continued laying out her explanation. Despite his somewhat harsh assessment, he was actually impressed with her thinking, but he wanted her to prove to him that she knew how to handle the money suckers, and where to draw the line. His questions were a test. There was much danger in being a fresh face on Coruscant, and once the leaches got their tentacles into you, then never let go. The Corellian had watched several former friends destroyed by such activities. It always started small, but it rarely stayed small. His nod stopped as the fire came into her eyes, and his stern look melted back into the infamous grin of his homeworld.
"That is all well-reasoned, my friend." He responded kindly. "And I personally am very happy that you brought Alderaan back into the Republic. That has long been one of my chief diplomatic goals. Corellia was never stronger than she was when the Alderaanians were close allies during my childhood." It was becoming obvious where this was all leading, even before she said it, but even so, he was slightly surprised when he realized the conversation had come full circle.
Dmitri took a deep breath at the offer, and his eyes almost twinkled. "From your perspective, viewing the strengths and weaknesses of your candidacy, that is an excellent idea, if I do say so myself." He said. "You might do even better with a man of my experience from the Rim, but Senators from the Rim rarely last long enough to meet that criteria." He paused. "There are two questions this brings to my mind, however. First, you just spend a lot of time telling me that I am toxic, and guilty by association. Doesn't that also apply to the Vice Chancellorship?" He had, after all, held the job previously, albeit under a much more competent Chancellor than any of the recent ones. "And second, how will you respond to people who believe that you are only my puppet? How will you prove to them that you are a leader in your own right, and I am not a predator waiting to steal your title? "
He was ready to accept, but he needed to know that she could sell this to the voters.

You would be toxic to your self, yes. But not to a princess you met a month ago, from a world that has been in isolation for a generation. My "innocence" ,to use a lay term, easily counter acts any thoughts of your ties to the corruption of the past. A smile creeps on her face. Not one of joy, or of concern. It wasn't malicious but it was close. A desire of sorts. As to the second point, thinking I am your puppet... Let them think what they wish. Underestimating me, and belittling me in their mind gives me an advantage. One I have gotten very good at exploiting. When you are not around I will be expected to be weak and that breads overconfidence. The tables will turn and they will learn very quickly the error of that thought, but it will be to late. They will be broken and fall in line, or they will be cast aside. She could not hide that she was looking forward to this. But really, the my acceptance speach will leave little doubt about me, I can assure you.

=Senator Naberrie= As Koronov's staff talked among themselves, and prepared their reports, Senator Naberrie's comlink suddenly exploded to life. It was Queen Adrianna, back home on Naboo, and she had an emergency. Elyse jumped to her feet and excused herself from Koronov's office, exiting out into the main lobby to take the call. From there, she could see Koronov and Thul engaged in a somewhat heated discussion, but the two-way soundproofing prevented either from overhearing the other.
=Queen Adrianna= Alyse, I need to be quick, but Vice Chancellor Darma has been located. She paused. He was assassinated out in the Lake Country, apparently by one of his own bodyguards. We are trying to keep the news off the HoloNet News until we have more information, but I doubt we will succeed. Please keep this to yourself as long as you can.
=Senator Naberrie= Alyse's response was barely coherent, and the call quickly ended. For a long moment, she stood, facing the far wall, her back to Koronov and Thul, her shoulders rising and falling heavily as she tried to regain control of her emotions. The Chancellor and Vice Chancellor had both been missing for some time, and everyone knew this was a possible outcome, but they had all been in denial -- until now. Now, there was no more hiding from the truth of what the Republic had become, and how little clarity the Senate had as to who was even holding the reins of power.
=Capt. Sara Ruluwoor= Having been thoroughly defeated in her attempts to meet with Senator Crom'nen of Ryloth, the Selonian CDF officer made her way to Senator Koronov's office, to see if he or his staff knew anything about the Twi'lek representative's location. Stepping through the door, the otter-like alien paused in surprise at Alyse's teary eyes and distraught look.
"Why, what in the galaxy is wrong, Senator Naberrie?" She asked, laying a hand on the other woman's shoulder. They had met at the Republic gala just the other night, and Sara was alarmed by her new friend's sorrow.
=Senator Naberrie= "Some-something terrible ha-has happened."

Koronov just shook his head. Arguing with Standash Thul was useless, and she had answers for literally every question he could think to ask. And he had to admit, she had a point. If someone was going to paint a target on the back of one of them two of them, it would be Koronov. They would remove him, and expect the Princess to collapse. Instead, he had a feeling she would strike back hard, and very quickly there would be one fewer force for evil in the Republic. And yeah, he'd be dead, but at least the shadows would have revealed themselves. In a dark way, it would be worth it.
"Very well." He said simply. "I accept." He had nothing left to lose. If he could not become Chancellor, then he had no career goals left to achieve. And if the Republic were to fall apart, then he would lose everything anyway. He had to be willing to try something new, think outside the box, and give a relative outsider a chance. The Republic had far too few outsiders providing input. It was why he had invited some of his campaign staff from back home to visit him in recent weeks. He would be a hypocrite if he did not extend the same courtesy to Standash. And so if that is what she wanted, then he would be her running mate and Vice Chancellor.
"I will warn you though, if I feel that I am becoming a distraction, I will step aside." He paused. "Likewise, if you feel that I am endangering your campaign, please do not be afraid to ask me to step aside. This task is bigger than either of us, and more important than my career - or yours."
He extended his hand to her, but almost immediately, he froze in mid-handshake, his attention fixed on the sight of Captain Ruluwoor comforting a distraught Senator Naberrie.
"Uh oh... what's this?"

Hastily exiting the conference room after exchanging concerned glances, Dmitri and Standash were just in time to hear Alyse's distraught words. "What is it?" He asked, nudging her toward a human-compatible chair, and dropping to a knee in front of his Senate counterpart.
Sara slid into one of the chairs designed for Selonian anatomy, her own look of worry not entirely disguised, despite her best efforts.
=Senator Naberrie= "There-there's been some trouble on Naboo." Alyse blurted out. "That was Queen Adrianna, warning me what is coming. You'll find out the details soon enough." Turning her attention to Koronov, she ignored their prior discretion on the topic, and begged him. "Please, please promise me you won't run for Chancellor, Dmitri. It just isn't safe."
"Why, what do you mean?" Dmitri gasped. "What happened? Tell us so that we can help." Well, technically, he wasn't running for Chancellor anymore....
Just then, there was a commotion in Koronov's office, and the door almost exploded open, expelling a blue-skinned Twi'lek woman, braintails twitching and flailing as they attempted to translate a thousand emotions into a sort of carefully choreographed sign language.
=Aylee'saresh= "Don't bother, it's all over the HoloNet News. Vice Chancellor Darma has been assassinated while on vacation on Naboo." She said, her words falling over each other.
Koronov looked like he'd been hit by a truck. Standing up, his face very pale, he turned away from the growing crowd of friends and advisors in his office lobby, and stared blankly at the wall. There was a long moment of silence, and then a very quiet, catlike voice punctuated it, with another horrible observation.
=Capt. Ruluwoor= "Sir, I believe Senator Crom'nen has gone missing as well."
