Dictionary of JvS Slang
Frequently used role playing terms
GMing: Godmodeing/Godmodding, an illegal action in roleplaying games that, in its simplest sense, defines anything impossible for a character.
PGing: Powergaming, in which one tries to maximize his/her character's attributes, such as armor or weapons that are deemed to be excessive.
Collaborative fiction: RP that involves a text based narrative and players that write a story together to create a RP environment. The JvS Universe is collaborative fiction.
Rules lawyering: A situation in which a player finds obscure regulations or rules and interprets them in such a way as to give him or her grounds to accuse another player of godmodeing.
Frequently used role playing abbreviations
RP or RPG: Role Play or Role Playing Game, a game where you assume the identity of a character of your own creation.
SL: Storyline, a role play arc of any length, involving one or more characters.
IC: in character, your actions and dialogue are assumed to be those of your character.
OOC: out of character, used when talking as yourself. It is extremely bad form to use knowledge gained OOC to influence your character's IC attitude. eg, you may know ooc that the character you are standing in front of is a Jedi in disguise because he has written a post you just read on a different planet, but your character has to find this out somehow.
IRL: in 'real life' -- also RL: Real Life (as in "I am having RL issues")
EU: Expanded Universe.
JvS: Jedi vs Sith
PC: Principal Character. Your main character, people cannot 'call' damage or actions on your PC. You alone can write their death or injury. You can write with more than one account, having multiple PCs. However it is preferred you keep their stories separate, in order to avoid tipping the balance your way in a conflict plot. Using multiple PCs in a conflict may lead to an infraction report and investigation.
NPC: Non-principal Character. NPCs are extra characters played from the same account to enhance the story. They are the equivalent of the 'extra' actors of the Universe. Some people invent them as needed - perhaps for a single scene - and some people write a continuous NPC that is very different to their PC to give them variety in their writing. Others write them with the plan to 'graduate' them to PCs when their current character dies. Either way, an NPC cannot be as powerful as a PC character, and one-on-one should pose a minimal threat. However an army of NPCs controlled by another player, while not as strong individually, could still conceivably swarm a PC through sheer numbers.
PM: Personal Message
TG: The Traveler's Guide to the JvS Universe, the 'book' every player is 'given' in JvS, a forum that tells you everything you need to know about the Universe.
JvS Wiki: The Jedi vs Sith Wiki, a player-created site, not officially maintained or verified by the Whills or developers of JvS.
Wookiee: Wookieepedia, useful for In Universe knowledge allowed in most cases as a point of reference by the Whills.
JotW: Journal of the Whills, a forum for personal or collaborative free-writing, allowing for more freedom in location or timeline than writing within the JvS Universe forums.
RPA: The RolePlay Advisors; a retired player-run group that is tasked with advising new and veteran players alike on RP best practices and resolving RP disputes. The RP Advisors are ready and willing to help you get started on JvS, and all questions about IC roleplay activities should be directed to the Advisors first, before a Whill gets involved.
GRPC/GEC/GSC/GSTC/PGC/etc: Old names for the player-run councils for RP rules-making that were replaced by the more advice-centered RP Advisors.

Regarding JvS 1.0 and JvS 1.5
Jedi vs Sith started as an application on Facebook, which is what is referred to as JvS 1.0. The app featured various game elements: 'Influence' points (obtained by recruiting people or performing daily Force actions), 'Knowledge' points (obtained by a community-sourced trivia game), and, later, 'Strength' points (obtained by turn-based combat simulation) and 'Dexterity' points (obtained by playing an obstacle flight game). Roleplaying began on message boards and was fully endorsed with the creation of a structured collection of boards in the first 'Universe'.
The Facebook application ran from October 2007 to June 2008, at which time the RP aspect of Jedi vs Sith moved to an external website, www.jedivsith.com, where it was called JvS 1.5. This version of JvS was hosted on phpBB and offered many different advantages over the Facebook format, most notably the forums format allowing for more sophisticated structure and locations for RP. The Galactic Battle Arena was added to JvS 1.5 in October 2008 as an officially sanctioned version of the Facebook usergroup by the same name to allow players a specific combat RP location separate from the Universe. The Journal of the Whills was added to JvS 1.5 in May 2009 in a similar thought: to allow writers more flexibility and the freedom to post in their own threads if desired without necessarily being tied to a single location.
JvS 1.5 ran until January 2013, at which time there was a problem with the servers leading the site to move to its current location on ProBoards and to be called JvS 2.0.
