First off, forgive me if this is the wrong place for a conversation like this, but I couldn't justify putting it anywhere else that I could think of. You know that BBCode function that allows you to talk to people over just about any distance and make clear words in their head no matter what?As far as we see it used on JvS, complete bunk, if you care about canon at all. The Essential Guide to the Force (as well as other sources) clarifies that even individuals with close bonds with relatives, lovers, or masters and apprentices, rarely achieved the ability to share more than a handful of words at a time over no more than a distance of about 1,000 kilometers. Yet I see full on conversations taking place in character's heads that could be much more realistically shared through other means. Granted, putting out information over the comms isn't always the most secure way of sharing your darkest secrets, but if you can't have a conversation face-to-face with another character, you probably shouldn't be having it. Now, I'm not typically a stickler for realism, especially considering the whole lightsaber, lightspeed, Force thing already, but operating within the Star Wars definition of "realism" should be a goal for every writer here, in my opinion. I did the whole Force Speak thing back on 1.0 ages ago, until I read up on the actual telepathic abilities in canon and then opted for a more accurate and, I think, more enjoyable manner of communicating through the Force. Instead of simply sharing words with people across distances few Force Users should ever be capable of, I focused instead on emitting feelings and bits of memory that could convey the general sense of information my character was attempting to share. Granted, I've had my "crazy power" moments, here on JvS, but I like to think I've evolved away from that. Sometimes I screw up and forget to take a thing or two into consideration (like this one time I thought it could be snowing on Yavin 4, wtf was I thinking, it's a strictly TROPICAL PLANET!!!), but when these things are brought up to me, I make necessary changes to maintain the accuracy and detail that I pride myself on. I'm not suggesting more regulation or anything like that, I'm just here sharing a point of view. Unfortunately, the Force Unleashed video games seem to have really warped peoples' perception of what Force Users are generally capable of. Not to mention the first game's storyline stripped the Rebel Alliance of any real legitimacy. I'm only suggesting that just as we keep a close count of who's able to acquire certain materials, like beskar or cortosis, maybe we should keep a better eye on ourselves and each other on how we conduct our characters at times. (I know, rich, coming from Ander Tagira, right? I KNOW, I must be CRAZY!!!) I understand that here on JvS we're creating something new and exciting, but I can't help but wonder if we've strayed a little too far from the baselines of Star Wars that we all fell in love with in the beginning. We have Halo-inspired armor and weapons, ships so overloaded with upgrades I have to ask "Isn't there a reason the Empire didn't do that already?," Iron Man-styled flight suits, and all manner of things that simply have no place here. I can't say they have NO place, really, considering the technological limits of the Star Wars Universe itself allows for a certain degree of similar exploration. But it seems a lot less like Star Wars, and a lot more like pop culture sometimes, and I can't say I like that outlook. :/

I do agree with the general sentiments, but Star Wars IS pop culture. Some people are just using stuff to make it fun. Canon and real life combined. If it's RPed properly it shouldn't be a problem. This is why I agree with the Force power rules because there is little leeway with those and some people just don't do the proper reading or bother to ask if it's done right. But as a whole, I think Tech and so forth can be a little more lenient. But that is just my two cents.

That's right Dred, just "like" the post, don't respond or you lose that "666" title! Don't ever post again, just make a new profile for Dred.

I had somewhat of the same mindset change come over me after reading up on the force, most after finding out what naughty things my sith character could do. After that point the only time I used that BBCoding was when I had a force ghost talking to my character. Just to give it that eerie beyond the grave atmosphere and add more flair to the post. Besides, they wouldn't be talking normally like we would, am I right?
Anyways, I agree with Dred as to being more lenient towards technology. HALO armour and random tech made just so your character has easy access to what's already created in canon has always bothered me. I didn't like it back in the day, and I still don't like it now. But that's me being awake at five O' clock in the morning. Now, what I've been trying to pioneer is the general advancement of Star Wars tech. You'd think in a hundred and thirty seven years they'd perfect Stormtrooper armour... I'm talking about small things to make what's already in canon better. Like the advancement of Hologram technology, since it seems throughout the ages they just got it to work and then said "SCREW IT! LETS BUILD A BIG MOON." Perhaps an ISD mk III one that fixes the issue of cannon placement and so forth.
Wow, I'm rambling. I might have to edit that later so it's more coherent. 0_0

I think that is there just for sake of ease. Although I never do it if I did it would be; Opening the mind to the force blah blah blah he sent the image of the land in front of him and the vauge sense of wanting. Had this been in words I would have said I am at city X and you are needed here.

Sinistra only force speaks to people she is in the same room with. Other than that, she uses encrypted comlinks.
Outside tech and stuff has always bothered me. Always. If you want that stuff, go find someplace else to write it. Put it in a JotW. Get a bunch of people who want to write a Spartan Team or Space Marines. But leave it off the boards. It has no place in SW writing.

It doesn't really bother me as long as it isn't passing along intel, or used to "call" for help.

Major: If by antiquated, you simply mean old-era Star Wars stuff, then there's no problem there. I think it's a bit senseless to "upgrade" older tech to function like the "modern" stuff, simply because you like the look of it, but that's at least Star Wars and boils down to personal preference. Honestly, if you want to use "old" tech, you should be bound by it's capabilities as well as its limitations.
Upgrading existing "modern" technology I have no problem with. But I've seen some crazy mods that, while "legal" by JvS regs, seem like simply too much. Especially considering I almost never see anyone actually RP the modifications of these technologies.
For example, I love the Imp-star Duece. It's one of my favorite SW vessels. But in order to make up for some of its shortcomings, it would need extensive rebuilds and an entirely different reactor system. So what GALSAF will be doing is writing out the actual process of upgrading this ship, using as much knowledge as we can dredge up on the vessel's details as possible.
Some might say: "But I don't want to put in all that time and detail." To which my honest response is: "Fine, then you can't have it."
Realism just seems so...forgotten. Even the most powerful Jedi in canon had seere limitations on their capabilities, and their strengths became defining personal characterizations of who they were. I think we disrespect those characters that prompted many of us to write here in the first place, by simply illegitimizing these characters through such extravagent useage of powers and modifications of technology.
Focuses should be on developing new written tactics for things like combat. So much of spatial warfare in Star Wars is about tactical application of your forces that battles were one on the strength of one's wits, rather than the number of concussion missile launchers they could stuff up the nose of their destroyer.
We ought to be developing ideas like spatial orientation in open space and within planetary orbits, rather than simply adding more weapons and stygium cloaking systems to everything with a cockpit.
Dav Man'Sell put a lot of work into a system that allows writers to accurately identify the locations of starships during an orbital battle. His application of such ideas actually gave meaning to phrases thrown around by pilots like "I see the enemy at Mark two-point-seven." Rather than just bullshit his way through every engagement, he has been able to clearly identify the layout of a battle, and quite frankly, this gives you a stronger tactical edge as well as makes your writing worthy of a read.
In my opinion, a battle won by strength of force makes for quite a boring battle.

I agree with this on the Force Speaking ability. When I do have my characters using it, I try to keep it within the select few individuals that they have close bonds with (i.e. Alexis with Dav (padawan/master). Overuse is not fun to read, particularly not for in depth conversations across a long distance. >.< Also, I'm pretty sure there's a sonic screwdriver running around here in the Universe as well.
Mainly I just try to keep things as realistic as possible. Even my highest level characters come away from stuff with scars and wounds, etc.

I wouldn't say having the ability to Force speak is straying to far away given that it provides extra dialog and other Role playing available paths to choose to create a good story. Though I do agree with you Ander Tagira on how Pop culture has changed our view of writing in a Star wars based universe. Star wars is not a futuristic movie, non-huge fans of star wars would say it is. We know though it isn't a futuristic movie, we know it is set 'A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.' As fans. The Empire would have the technology to create something like an iron man flight suit, though if you are role playing in the star wars universe, your character does not know what an iron man flight suit, or a Spartan assault rifle looks like. I know where your going with this topic, Star wars was meant to be that suspenseful gritty feeling adventure story we all know and love. Not Patton Oswalt's Star wars. www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvdoLRBudwUThough i love his story, ;D

I do understand the concern here with Star Wars having things we've taken from other things such as Halo, Iron Man, and the true abilities the force has. My only issue is how can Star Wars stray from its path of realism? Yes my armor is similar in a few ways to the Iron Man suit, but the thing is if one can develop the object they like into the Star Wars universe and make an accurate attempt of how it could work in such a place and how to use it, it should at least be understood that it is possible for such a thing can exist. And not exist with other items. An example is that I only have one suit that is foldable, and when it is worn I have to manually load it, or not load it at all and keep whats acceptable. But your concern, Ander, is understandable.

I respect other peoples wishes to use such technology, though it's also possible for me and anyone else to role play the way we want and keep that old fashioned feeling of suspense. Much like i do when i write, i have nothing planned ahead and when that moment of fear strikes Horan's face, I make a final decision of where i go from there at the last second. Though it keeps me in suspense, it's a big ass for writers block.
