So I am unsure if you have all heard the recent news about this but I am currently fairly upset about it and decided to ask your opinions, thoughts, haikus on the matter. Currently, I am so not down to go see the new films in any regards because of this. My entire beloved EU has been retconned to hell. EVEN ZAHN. Whyyyy. I am also wondering if this will create massive continuity changes within JvS and Wookiepedia as a whole...

Rest assured Altus and anyone else checking this thread,
The PGC is keeping a close eye on this changing situation and be sure to keep you all informed of what we intend to do if things begin to change dramatically and potentially cause continuity problems.
cheers,

A Star Wars universe without Zahn's books and Rogue Squadron is not Star Wars. >.<

This was coming down the turnpike this whole year since JJ began creating the concept. I wasn't surprised, nor I am I excited. But knowing Abrams, the team at Lucasarts that is still in tact, Lucas as creative consultant, I feel they will honor us-- the fans-- in a very big way.

Sticking to the books would be a huge problem, considering the actors age. Though i don't think they are dropping the bucket on the books, I've heard they may be framing some of the VII characters after some of the characters from the books. From looks to personality, Karen Gillan's hair had been turned into a wig and the best guess for this one is someone such as Mara Jade. Unless it's just another character altogether. ''However, Lucasfilm said it was not ruling out borrowing from the novels in future, offering at least a sliver of hope to fans of Mara Jade, Jacen Solo and Cade Skywalker.'' Framing a Star wars movie after books would not be the way to do it, in my opinion at least. I trust J.J with Star wars, and i think we'll all be surprised with the films. As a huge fan of the originals I am happy to see Luke on the big screen again. Taken sometime this week, I'm loving the look Mark has going on if it's what Skywalker will look like.

The age of the actors roughly parallels the age of the characters. I think maybe ten more years may have passed in the books than in the real world.
Still.
Harrison Ford looks like an aged Han Solo. Mark Hamill looks like an aged Luke Skywalker. Anthony Daniels looks like he should be encased in metal. Carrie Fisher might be past her metal bikini wearing days, but she looks like an aged Leia. There's no way the new movies aren't going to jump into the future by at least a few decades. But since they've consigned the EU as we know it to an alternate universe, all bets are off. I doubt we'll see any Vong running around, and I don't have my hopes up about Mara Jade. That said, Disney has done an excellent job with the Marvel movies, and I've no reason to think they'll let us down just yet. We'll have to wait til next year to find out for sure.

This was exactly the kind of discussion I was hoping would be generated! The complication of having the Legends universe aside the movie canon gives us a Star Trek conundrum. That is, the universe where only the movies and shows are canons, not the books unless they are marked as such. This is going to prove majorly confusing and already I know there is an uproar over things like the replacement for "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" and the scrapping of the Sword of the Jedi series. I no longer have any hopes for this film series in any sense. Not because I don't love what Disney does (Marvel, case in point) but because new content will be destroying the old that I grew up with. My EU is no longer my EU. I will have to relearn. It's like if Earth-616 got made a side-arc for Marvel. I digress.

While some of the established cannon... er, canon, is great work, I am glad to see a redesigning.
Frankly, the EU has been dominated by a role-playing, 80's mindset headed up by a very particular group of fan. Overall, it's highly misogynistic, with women being objectified more often than not in most series until recent developments in the last few series (don't Leia me: she's more than once portrayed as an incompetent leader). Moreover, the stories are practically homophobic, with no valid representation of same sex or transgender characters, along with an abysmal portrayal of minority groups.
It's a limiting nightmare that just isn't fair to an accurate description of the human condition, and I hope the new iteration can embrace our more progressive society.
I mean, it could be great. Then again, they could just go down the same route again and nothing will actually change.

While I understand the need to move Post-ROTJ EU into an alternate time-line, what I don't understand is why they did it to ALL of the EU...
I mean, now, even KOTOR and the Darth Plaguies novel are considered 'legends'.
PS: Altus, tis good to see you back.

Now I know how the Trekkies felt.
It's as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.
I feel something terrible has happened.

This honestly does not change anything for me. I know the "official" story is now changing, and Star Wars will be making their own EU. I have been reading the books and playing the games foreverrrrrrr though. The story is not changing for me. From Bane to the Yuuzhan Vong, the story stays the same for me lol.
