Friends,
In an effort to make it as easy as possible for newcomers to figure out what JvS is and how it works, I plan to create a more complete and formal Beginners' Guide for the site. There have been efforts made toward this in the past, and we can learn from and build on those efforts. This Beginners' Guide will be prominently featured on the JvS boards, just above the Traveler's Guide. It will also becoming the location that every player is directed after they sign up, and will be mentioned in a welcome PM from the Whills. Needless to say this is an important task.
While I have some clear goals and requirements, I also want everyone's input, and beyond that I am looking for several volunteers to help write the Guide.
If you have any brief suggestions, feel free to post them here. If you would like to volunteer to be a significant contributor to the project, please PM me with "Beginners Guide" in the subject line and tell me why you want the job!
Thanks,
~Whill High Shaman Chill

I do have some ideas on this but I am sure that tey are no doubt felt by a lot of people who would be helping on this. Some things that should be included are:
1. A place for people who have never RPed before and want to learn the basics (that would have been nice when I started) 2. A list of names of people to contact who are available to help 3. A list of user groups and possibly what they like to do RP wise 4. A character creation FAQ 5. An introduction area where they can say hello and meet people 6. A welcome
YES I KNOW THAT WAS DONE ON THE OLD SITE SHHHH ITS AN ORIGINAL THOUGHT!
I mean thanks for your time

Agreed on all suggestions, although some of them might not go in the Beginners Guide itself.
1. I would actually like to place this in an in-Universe location (Coruscant and Tython would be my top 2 candidates)
2. This should be the same as the list of members for the group that will be replacing the PGC.
5. Does this need to be a separate forum, or should tell new members to just use the RP Planning forum?

In universe is a very good idea, it will get people out and on the boards all the sooner and seeing as we no longer do planetary badges I dont think to many people will care. In fact they may be all for it (seriously people chime in).
Yes, in fact the two should either be closely intermingled OR be one and the same.
We could go two ways I guess, either have it were the post is stickied at the top of the page for the RP planning or a separate page. Personally I lean toward the latter as it gives it an air of legitimacy and would be easier to find.

I already messaged Galdaart Fel about something that had been thought up by a member of the old site before RL drug him away, but I figured I can put it up here too. I know back in 1.5, the writer behind Kirus had come up with an idea for a group he called "Guardian Angels" whose basic job (not the best word to use, i know) was to be there for new writers and arrivals to the site and completely operated with the "New Player's Forum" part of the site. Basically, with the help of Whill Shaman Zauriel, we were able to utilize threads within that forum as a means to help new writers with the style of RP that is involved with this site. There was a thread for Jedi, Sith and Mandalorians that I know of for and I think that there may have been one for Smuggler's as well. All in all, the group's intent was to help new writers along in a format that would allow us to point out specific parts about a post and what to look for. The idea was that being interactive and trying to assist in that manner, should the writer wish it, could be more useful in some aspects than just reading through how to guides in the "New Player's Guides." If you would like, I can certainly dig through some of the archives and see if I can find the actual details of the group. I really liked this idea back then and would be all for trying to orchestrate bringing it back.

I really liked this idea back then and would be all for trying to orchestrate bringing it back. I am aware of that effort, although I do not really know much about it (I was on hiatus as a Whill at the time). The way I envision things, the former role of the Guardian Angels would be one of the functions of the group that replaces the Player's Guide Council. However, that's just my opinion. The exact details are up to Galdaart. This time around, I would like to designate an in-Universe location for Beginner RP, rather than it being hidden away among the OOC forums. I think it would see more use this way. Basically, we could say, if you don't know where to start, go here!

Considering the history of Tython, that seems like the perfect place to get things started for our newer members.

Considering the history of Tython, that seems like the perfect place to get things started for our newer members. That had been my initial thought as well. :^) But for someone starting a non-Force-sensitive character, what would there be for them to do on Tython? Coruscant might be more appropriate...? I should probably open a poll on this.

Shaman Chill - I see what you mean, and I definitely agree with the using the In-Uni threads over the OOC. Also I agree with Alpharius; Tython sounds like an excellent planet for beginning writers to start off, particularly Jedi. However, I can't really see Mandalorians, Smugglers, Sith, etc. feasibly having a reason to begin a character there. I'm not sure on other people's thoughts about beginning RP locations, but that's my thoughts. I could picture Korriban for Sith and Mandalore for Mandalorians. Coruscant would work great for a number of things and plus it would give it some much needed attention

Well, that's were I think things might get alittle tricky. With Coruscant being the capital world of the Republic, those writers may somehow feel entitled to dictate what new folks could and couldn't do. Granted, they may not even care, but that's one of the possibilities I see.
Perhaps instead of Coruscant, if that eventuality comes to pass, another world like Nar Shaadaa, or Nal Hutta might suffice. Most non force folks would pick smuggler or bounty hunter as their professions. Could have volunteers NPC the Hutts and have them sent out on jobs. Be they taking out other NPC's or sneaking contraband through some government's borders.
That's just some spit balling though.
EDIT: Mobile posting sucks with older smart phones, and I think having Korriban and Mandalore being their archetypal homeworlds would work perfectly. Great idea, Cath.

I don't anticipate it being an issue, but the Republic players would not be in any position to do anything of the sort. If the Whills were to place the Beginners RP Forum on Coruscant, it would only be after we get an agreement of cooperation from the Republic players, and with some very specific ground rules set down from the beginning.

You know me, I'm a worst case scenario kinda guy. I don't think four planet's would be too unwieldy for the greeters to handle, eh? One to cater to each major aspect of the site, and if the new folks want to 'specialize' and write - say Imperial characters or the like, can group up with those factions interested in 'sponsoring' them in an RP boot camp. EDIT: The typos are real today. Lol

Sounds good to me. I've always got a presence in the Mandalorian side of things, they're the kind of characters I write best, anyways. Aside from that, I can always throw together some NPCs and even a PC here and there.

If this is the case (Which I think is an outstanding idea), I'd gladly help out with any new Sith authors. I can easily create a couple of NPC's to help them get started!

If we can get any traction on this, I can go ahead and talk to the other Mandalorian writers to see about dedicating an area of Mandalore to this and if Mandalore does not pan out, I will offer Ordo up for it.

This is all excellent discussion, so I hesitate to interrupt, but we're getting off topic. The Beginners RP forum(s) - in some fashion - will likely be implemented. I think Galdaart Fel is tied up with RL at the moment, but one of his first tasks as High Councilor is organizing the new advisory group that will replace the Guild. One of the objectives of that group is an overhaul of our new player stuff -- which will probably include this idea. Once we get everything set up, one of the jobs for that group will be to finalize plans for new player forum(s). So yes, feel free to spread the idea around informally, but we're several steps away from it happening, and when it does happen, I expect there will be a formal proposal to all the major factions. If we try to do it too soon, before there's a structure behind it, it won't be a lasting arrangement. This thread is intended to solicit ideas for the content of the Beginners Guide. Fel will be posting a separate announcement soon about the advisory group. If you have ideas about the advisory group, please see the discussion board here: jedivsith.boards.net/board/883/discussions-replacing-players-guild
