So. The last couple weeks hasn't gone exactly as I planned. Meaning -- I haven't really been here at ALL.
In the interest of creating a completely open, transparent, and hopefully positive and productive environment for building this new PGC replacement / RP Advisory team, I feel like I need to say a proper hello to those who know me only as Galdaart Fel, because as I'm sure you are all aware, I don't have a very big OOC presence on this (or any) board. In time, that will change as a necessary facet of wearing this 'HC' badge (which I have had for over a month now, and have to date done absolutely squat with. So I'm writing this with humble intentions, and feeling rather guilty as I do so.)
Hi there. I'm Dan Gallo. (https://www.facebook.com/gallotron) I'm thirty-eight years old. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with my wife of four years, Michelle, and our 20-month-old daughter, Evelyn. In my OOC life, I work as a Production Manager / Technical Director for the live event / theatre industry here in Toronto. My regular gig is at a local college, George Brown, where I am the head of Production at their Theatre School. It's a pretty cool job, which allows me a good deal of flexibility (and often allows me to check in here several times during the EST work-day.) However, it's a school-year, seasonal job (September - May) and in the summertime, I usually take on other gigs to continue the paycheque rolling in. That can be a little chaotic (see last two weeks, mentioned above.) Being Daddy, and all that that entails, has not really stifled my creativity or my drive to write, in fact having a daughter has launched a thousand new stories in my head, stories I want to play out with you all over the coming years.
Yes, years. (anybody who writes with the Fel crew knows we tend to be a little slow.) I've been a JvSer since 1.0, (sometime in Sept. 2007 I think) and I have no intention of ever going away. I found the app on Facebook, and followed it to 1.5, and now 2.0, like so many did. I love the collaborative aspect of the site, and I've come to call many of the people I write with here 'friends.' Not a term I take lightly, nor one I use on the interwebs very often. My RP experience dates back much farther than JvS though. I started out playing a then-new tabletop RP that caught my attention at a local game shop in 1990, called 'Rifts.' I played with a core group from my highschool till 1996 or 1997, thereabouts. In that time, I also befriended one of the artists who inked the post-apocalyptic images of Rifts Earth, Ramon Perez, who lived in a town close by to where I grew up. Rifts led to 'Shadowrun,' which led to AD&D, which led to White Wolf, which led to D&D 3.5. I still play a pen and paper D&D campaign with the same group, going on fifteen years now. These are the same friends who attend Sci-Fi movie launches with me, play video games with me (when there's time) and also create theatre with me. It's all full-circle for me. This is a part of my life. My closest, longest friendships drive me to seek out geekdom in its various guises.
Thankfully, my wife understands, and though she doesn't write on JvS (I've tried to get her to start...) she does geek out in her own way, and has sat in on more than a few D&D sessions.
I didn't really try that hard to become a HC here. I was kind-of asked. And I accepted, knowing that if I stripped away the stuff about being a PGC councillor that I was never very good at in the first place (judging GBA matches, ruling on Canon business requests and weapon creation) and keeping things to what I believe I am good at, which lies more in the writing and IC interactions between players, then I could make a successful go of it. I have started up many a storyline, and in the pen-and-paper realm, I am often 'Game Master,' meaning I need to keep a lid on the rules, and know when it's ok to bend them, and when to allow the dice to rule. I am good at enticing newcomers to the RP world to try out gaming (though not so much in the online environment -- more on that in a moment) and I am every player's biggest cheerleader. I love my interactions with other players on the tabletop, and on JvS, and it is a truly special thing to see vivid, detailed interactions come to life.
I look forward to helping new players, whether directly by creating RP interactions for newcomers, of indirectly by making introductions and facilitating RP through sponRP weekends, and steering new players toward the type of environment they wish to write in. I do not relish the task of determining fault and punishment, but as a longtime GM / DM, I think I am capable of doing so.
So, what does my High Councillor badge mean?
I don't really know. I'm hoping that you, the site, will direct me. I know we need a new replacement for the PGC, and many thanks go out to Aer and Chill for spearheading this initiative. I hope I'm up to the challenge. I don't want to let any of you down. What I do see in the very short term is that, hand-in-hand with the new RP Advisory members (yet to be selected / voted in / nominated -- nominee thread to go up very soon) we need to build this site up and draw in new members. I see the two tasks -- RP Advisory, and Site Expansion -- as the key to growth and survival. I look forward to talking with everyone about this.
Just don't hold your breath for me to pop up on chat... It's pretty rare. You need me? Send a PM. I'll get back to you pronto.
Best,
Dan Gallo / Galdaart Fel
