These rules outlined here are considered temporary and may be subject to change at any time.
Locations Not Present On JvS
The Star Wars Universe is vast, and the number of planets that exist within it are innumerable. Because of this, not all planets and locations can be represented on the site. Locations that are not present on JvS cannot be claimed to be under anyone's control in Open RP. Do not fear, for there are options available to those wishing to write in a setting that does not have a thread or forum.
Open Space and Hyperspace -At the end of every in-Universe board, there is a sub-board titled Open Space and Hyperspace. Here, you can write in any canon location that is not represented by another sub-board; be it a planet, space station, open space or to write a transition post for hyperspace travel. Any planets or locations written here cannot be claimed to be controlled by any person or faction.
The Journal of the Whills -JoTW for short, this forum allows members to create their own story threads. Please see the Freewriting FAQ and Rule of the Freewriting Forum for an explanation of the JoTW rules and limitations in regard to the impact of stories written here to the JvS Universe proper.
Location and Usergroup Requests -Make a request in the appropriate sub-board that applies to the location you wish to be added to the JvS Universe. Please keep in mind that final decisions on all location requests are up to the discretion of the Council of the Whills.
The definition of 'ownership'
A person, faction or business cannot 'own' a planet. They can 'own' cities, even 'own' all the cities on one planet.
This is only for as long as they continue to RP there.
You never really own a place, you just control it for now/as long as you can.
How do you state control?
The only way to legitimately have control recognised is to appear in a Guide entry.
Telling players OOC when they arrive at a location that it is 'yours' does not constitute control.
Being legitimately recognised as RPing there by all players and going through the Guide is required. Disputed planets will not appear in the Guide until all agree on the entry.
Players can claim to 'own' the whole Universe but until that is recognised by the community and the systems the Whills have put in place, it is not legit.
How do you keep control?
RP presence is required.
You cannot claim to control a location when you or your team leave the RP vacant there for days on end. You need an RP 'presence' on any location you claim.
This is not 'auto-posted' defenses, but storylines, interaction and RP.
If you say you have a vast Empire or faction that spans the Universe, you really do need to have a lot of players all writing everywhere to back it up.
What is RP presence?
RP presence is an indication that players are interacting and dominating that location.
A post about anything to do with the location indicates an RP presence there. It means a player is or has been online and tended to that location.
Auto defenses cut and pasted the same every day are not RP presence.
RP presence does not necessarily mean your characters have to be there. It means a RL person has been online and is keeping an eye on that location, depicting the state it is in.
Example:
The wind rustles through the trees of the forest. The force is strong here and there are many who would benefit from the peace to be found.
It can be assumed that any defenses posted in this location are active and troops are at their posts in case of an attack. This is because a player has attended the location and written a post describing the scene. The troops are not even included in the scene but there is an RP presence, a RL player who has been online and written there.
If the same post was posted every day, it is not RP. It is someone pressing ctrl c, ctrl v. If there is only one player that ever posts there, the location can be assumed to be controlled by only one person and therefore defended by only one person's troops. You therefore need to collaborate and RP with others to indicate a higher level of defense.
What if it is only me controlling a location?
A player can control the RP of a location on their own, by writing solo there.
You need to actively seek allies (RL writers) to collaborate with in case of attack.
If you are alone on a location and post every day about things, you can defend that location but will only have the resources of one person to do it with. Hence, if you don't collaborate and seek interaction you will eventually be in trouble.
What should I do if attacked?
Always respond IC.
You cannot defend a place OOC. If you post a pure OOC post saying the location is yours, you have then indicated there is a player online to defend who has just chosen not to. The attackers can then continue to their next attack post as you were there but didn't defend.
What if it is just me though?
Respond IC then set up a time OOC when others in your team can be online to respond.
The Whills are loathe to dictate what timeframe that should be within as it varies but a guideline of maximum 72 hours from the first attack should be kept in mind.
You cannot stall and then try to find people to help you defend. If you didn't build your team, you have no right to say you have one and put off attackers who have managed to work together.
I don't want to give up my location!
You aren't being thrown out. Players who attack are asking to write with you. Let them.
Discuss how many players they are going to bring to the location to increase the RP there. Negotiate plot and RP. This is just one battle story in the bigger history of the location. They just brought loads of players to write with you.
IF you decide to lose because you are the only one there, it doesn't mean you have lost forever. It means your character has motivation to fight back. OOC this is all collaboration. It is your characters that hate each other.
I had to lose or share control because it was just me. Now what do I do?
Make sure the Guide entry is modified to incorporate the increase in RPers on the planet. You are now part of a bigger RP team there.
Your character may have lost control for a while but you can still write there and plan to take back control by collaborating with the new arrivals/other players.
How do I attract allies?
Guide entries should be used to tell people what you do and how you interact OOC.
The Homeworld you state in your profile refers to your RP Homeworld, the place you have input into as far as submitting a Guide entry.
If you don't like the team there you have the choice to move Homeworld to a planet where you support the writing. Taking your resources and RP presence with you.
You are a RL resource in defending a planet. Use that to negotiate. When players arrive to attack, ask how many of them are going to help dominate the locations with you through RP presence.
Attract OOC allies. Planets with 10 residents who exhibit an RP presence have stronger hold on locations. This doesn't mean their characters are on the same side, it does mean they can protect their storylines from takeover.
What constitutes abandonment?
The time frame for abandonment is currently set around 30 days. This is not a law but a guideline and should not be stated as a law during attack.
Abandonment is a lack of RP presence (see above). If no RL player has posted on a location for 30 days and there is no Guide entry to tell you who is in control there, you can assume that it is vacant and initiate taking control.
This does not mean you have control. You should PM to say you are moving in and if you do not hear back within a reasonable timeframe (guideline 72 hours) continue the process.
If a player then comes online to defend they can do so. They will, however, have to take a position of disadvantage due to the lack of RP presence/attendance.
If they don't come back to defend you cannot ignore all defenses and troops that may have been stationed there. They must be taken into account in any posts where you intend to claim control. You must RP where they are, but they can be assumed to be inactive, not at their posts or be in disarray as there has not been a RL person online indicating they would be ready and alert.
Refusal to RP a defense when it can be proven that a defender is online (i.e. posting OOC but never IC) likewise may be treated as abandonment. After five or more IC posts by attackers, unanswered by IC posts by a defender but answered OOC, the attacker may move on with the next phase of the story. This does not include posts where the defender is OOC negotiating to be online and continue the story another time.
Specific Rules Concerning Abandonment : (if/when the time period for abandonment exceeds 1 month)
After 1 month of inactivity:
The attacker of an abandoned planet or location must send the required PM to notify the RPer who controls that planet or location. A 72 hour waiting period is mandatory in order for the controlling RPer to provide some sort of IC response. An invasion RP is required after the end of the waiting period should there be no response. The previous owner must RP their counter attack with either an underground resistance or outside force within the waiting period or an automatic "forfeit" (With invasion RP) of the planet or location will result. (Note here that an underground resistance is not a fully readied military fighting force. AKA they must be RPed at a disadvantage)
After 2 months of inactivity:
The attacker is not required to send a PM to the former controlling RPer. An invasion RP is however, required. The controlling RPer has one week to respond IC to the invasion. After the one week waiting period without an IC response, the attacking RPer is free to assume total control of the planet or location. Should the previous owner wish to attempt to take back their planet or location they are required to bring an outside force in order to defend and/or reacquire the planet or location.
After 3 months of inactivity:
Complete forfeit of planet or location to any invaders.
Should the previous owner wish to attempt to take back their planet or location they are required to bring an outside force in order to defend and/or reacquire the planet or location.
