IF Dungeon: LEVEL 3.

The Third Level perhaps the most terrifying. Four ysalamiri make the Force all but void at this level. These creatures are maintained in specially designed holding crates. The floor is covered in blood. Ten cells one meter wide and two deep with barred doors are lined along the north wall. Three private torture chambers, 12x12 meters, extend from the east side. The techniques and equipment used here are of the most primitive in nature. The devices used are geared at inflicting horrible pain and are proven as effective forms of interrogation. A number ropes and wires stream off rails along the ceiling. *An example of such use is Strappado, a form of torture in which the victim's hands are first tied behind their back, and then he or she is suspended in the air by means of a rope attached to wrists, which most likely dislocates both arms. Weights may be added to the body to intensify the effect and increase the pain. *Prisoners are fed, if at all on the nutrient high fish gruel that IF troops live on. Feeding of subjects can be regulated in order to deliberately create great hunger and malnutrition. Staff generally eat appetizing food of a distinct smell and in plain sight to accentuate this torture.

A variety of instruments designed to inflict pain precisely by cutting, denailing, detoothing, flogging, hamstringing, kneecapping, castration, flaying and other hideous forms of pain are stored in open sight, thus adding to the terror. Thumbscrews are a good example of such. Chemical solutions used in torture are also readily available.
*hamstringing is a method of crippling a person by cutting the two large tendons at the back of the knees. Among this tool kit several particular instruments are of note: Choke Pear: This is a complex device that makes use of a piece of iron in the shape of a pear, which is forced into the mouth. On turning a key, a number of springs thrust forth points of iron in all directions, so that the instrument can never be taken out except by means of the key.

The Heretic's Fork: This device consisting of a length of metal with two opposed bi-pronged "forks" as well as an attached belt or strap is also among these instruments. One end is pushed under the chin and the other into the sternum, the strap fixing the device to the neck. This effectively immobilized the head at a total extension of the neck, and caused great pain.
Also hundreds of rats, fed meat exclusively are caged. Now feral they offer a most grisly form of torture. Sacks are used to cover the foot or head of victims with several hungry rats.
Commonly practiced techniques:

Waterboarding, a form of torture that consists of immobilizing the victim on his or her back with the head inclined downwards, and then pouring water over the face and into the breathing passages is performed in the open area.
The Pau-de-Arara technique designed to cause severe joint and muscle pain, as well as headaches, and psychological trauma is also used. The technique consists of a tube, bar, or pole placed over the victim's biceps and behind the knees while tying both the victim's ankles and wrists together. The entire assembly is suspended between two metal platforms forming what looks like a parrot's perch.

The rack is a device that consists of an oblong rectangular, wooden frame, slightly raised from the ground, with a roller at one, or both, ends, having at one end a fixed bar to which the legs are fastened, and at the other a movable bar to which the hands are tied. The victim's feet are fastened to one roller, and the wrists are chained to the other. Eight of these devices are located at the west wall.
The rack operates as follows: As the interrogation progresses, a handle and ratchet attached to the top roller are used to very gradually stepwise increase the tension on the chains, inducing excruciating pain. By means of pulleys and levers this roller is rotated on its own axis, thus straining the ropes until joints are dislocated and eventually separated. Additionally, once muscle fibers have been stretched past a certain point they lose their ability to contract, thus victims who are released had ineffective muscles as well as problems arising from dislocation. Because of its mechanically precise, graded operation, it is particularly suited for hard interrogation, as to extract a confession. *One gruesome aspect of being stretched too far on the rack is the loud popping noises made by snapping cartilage, ligaments or bones. Eventually, if the application of the rack is continued, the victim's limbs are completely separated from the body. Thus another powerful method for putting pressure upon a prisoner was to merely force him to view someone else being subjected to the rack. Others are moved by merely hearing the noise.
Six iron maiden of varying size stand against the west wall. This device consists of an iron cabinet, with a hinged front, sufficiently tall to enclose a human being. A small closable opening allows interrogation of the victim while they are forced to stand with the spiked back and front piercing the body. These make the victim bleed profusely and weaken slowly, eventually dying from blood loss or asphyxiation. The device is designed so the sharp points do not pierce vital organs, and extreme cases the victim can be dragged out the top latch to a torturous death.
In two rooms more precise torture is administered. The rooms have medical tables and are well-stocked with an assortment of laboratory tools are kept in cupboards. Pressure point torture is conducted by experts. The bones such as the sternum, collarbone & floating ribs are worked on. Acupuncture is manipulated to inflict pain rather than heal. *The foot is a central area of torture given the sensitivity of this area of the body.
Foot whipping This method, whereby the soles of the feet are beaten with an object such as a cane or rod, or a whip is the most favored and highly effective. It is although extremely painful, leaves few physical marks.
Butterfly: The technique consisted of positioning three wooden or bamboo boards, connected by rope, around and between the suspect's bare feet. The construction of the device enabled the boards to be either snapped open and closed (like the wings of a butterfly) or gradually tightened. Each time the prisoner refuses to testify or confess, the rope was pulled smartly and the boards either whacked sharply at the ankles or slowly squeezed the feet ever more tightly. A similar device is that employs essentially identical mechanics to squeeze and crush the finger-bones is also used.
Foot roasting: In one version of foot torture is burning. This can be done slowly with hot implements, or in more drastic methods. At times the soles of his feet were smeared with lard and slowly barbecued over red-hot coals.
Instep borer: This technique is used often. Externally the instrument resembles an iron boot. It is hinged to permit the free insertion and removal of the bare foot. A crank projects from a housing over the instep, which conceal a long, thick, serrated iron blade, grooved so as to inflict maximum damage and promote liberal blood flow. Turning the crank slowly advanced the blade into the boot, punching a hole through the center of the instep. The resultant wound was so large that it was not unusual for the prisoner to die of toxemia soon after.
Sensory deprivation:
This type of torture is used on both the second and third levels. The deliberate reduction or removal of stimuli from one or more of the senses is manipulated quite sporadically. Simple devices such as blindfolds or hoods and earmuffs cut off sight and hearing respectively, while more complex devices are used to cut off the sense of smell, touch, taste, thermoception (heat-sense), and gravity. *An isolation tank is a lightless, soundproof tank in which subjects float in salty water at skin temperature. Two devices of this type are located on the Second Level. **Three portable soundproof booths 3x3 meters are used for inflicting sensory deprivation are stored on the Third Level
Sleep deprivation is also used as a means of interrogation frequently. Generally a subject is kept awake for several days and when finally allowed to fall asleep, suddenly awakened and questioned.
