A number of writers were discussing the usefulness or not of using old ship designs. The discussion split into two groups. The first thought that any older ship designs would require heavy reworked & redesign to prove useful against 'modern' ships. The other side was of the thought that if they were built with modern equipment & parts (or kept up to date over the years with system upgrades & replacement) they would function as their stats would indicate (for example if the original ship had 8 turbolasers, it would have 8 turbolasers that would function with the same power as a modern turbolaser, instead of assuming that the systems were weaker than modern systems).
Basically: can you use older designs as listed competitively with modern ships?

As a related note, what would be the opinion of upgrading Mandalore to a shipyard world? Obviously there is MandalMotors there, but my fellow Mando's have pointed out it would need some "expansion"/"upgrading" so that it could produce a number of larger warships simultaneously.
So if some RP was put into it, would it be ok?

Basically: can you use older designs as listed competitively with modern ships? I can't think of any reason why this would be a problem from an RP mechanics or fairness standpoint, so I am inclined to say that this goes beyond the level to which the Whills need to make a ruling. I would imagine that some writers would prefer to write old ships as if they are old, and others would prefer to write old ships as if they are brand new. So long as no unfair advantage is being gained, both approaches are equally valid, and I would encourage the community to decide this for themselves on a situational basis. In general, assuming minor improvements in technology (whether ships or otherwise) should be fine so long as those improvements are not used to exceed the capabilities and firepower of their more modern equivalents. If anything, to be fair, the older tech should still be slightly less powerful than the most modern equivalent. And obviously, any replacements need to be equivalent parts, not swapping out a single turbolaser for a quad cannon that draws 3 times as much power or something like that.

Building a new shipyards is plausible, although I would caution that such a large project should involve a significant amount of work and preferably multiple writers. There is no official JvS list of where shipyards exist or do not exist (although we have considered creating such a list in the past). Would there be interest in the creation of a list of recognized shipyard worlds (canon and noncanon) and perhaps a grading scale that classifies the shipyards by size?

Actually, I made a list a little while back when I edited together a new map of the planets on the site for the Civil War SL. I listed on the map the planets that (In Canon) were considered major shipyards. As, to be fair, the one linked above is ... very much out of date & frankly not that intuitive to read. This is it several edits in (as of 7/5/2017): mapIt isn't official by any means but it seems to have at least become fairly commonly used. Which I am personally happy about, as figuring out where to put all the dots was a real pain in the back side.

Excellent. A shipyard building storyline would certainly work. *rallies the Mando'ade with the mask to contribute to building the shipyard*
The idea of a shipyard world list does sound neat. Though I don't know if it's a must have thing. If some people wanted to do it as a passion project, then yeah? Otherwise its probably not something we need to worry a whole lot about...
