Ok folks. So with the official (re)launch of the RPA finally having taken place, I figured now was as good a time as any to revisit this discussion.
Now, there is some information I would like to preface this with. Most of which is based upon recent posts made by Whill Chill and discussion with a couple of the other Whills.
The most important thing being, that according to one of his most recent posts in Adrien’s thread, the fleet and army regulation limits are meant for... I suppose the best term is spontaneous raids. For example, suppose Viox decided to just randomly show up and attack... Corellia without any prior planning. In that situation, the fleet regulations would come in to play. Now, suppose Viox decided to plan an attack on Felucia (shhh, I know that’s what he is really doing). In that situation, both sides can happily agree to using what ever sized forces they like and be absolutely fine,
Now, some clarification as to when the regulations apply is something that I believe the Whills are discussing and hopefully will get implemented soon. But with that in mind: as something designed to apply when people just want to randomly attack a place with no prior warning. Are these limits really in need of change? Theoretically, as long as you and whoever you’re writing with agree’s, you can have a force as large or as small as you like that fits within the narrative.
Thoughts?

Given that clarification, I think it's a solid guideline. Some play testing might be in order...

So, there has been some discussion on going in Discord about some changes for how we classify starfighters. I just wanted to see if that was something we should discuss further here?

It honestly depends on how much the site as a whole cares. I care, but I like the devils in the details. Honestly it looks like classifying fighters might not be necessary, as the differences might be simply accounted for by "flavor" or "style" of action written.

At the moment, the current MAD system only acknowledges two classes of fighters, based not on their size, but on their abilities. Normal & light (based on whether they have 10 points or 15). Personally, I would like to see that change made (& the scrapping of the 'simple' system). With normal fighters being a point each, & light fighters being half a point each.
Some bombers & especially heavy fighters classes would likely be a much better fit being termed as gunboats. The K-wing comes to mind, it fills the same role, has way more firepower than any other fighter & has a small crew instead of a single pilot or a pilot/gunner combo.
On a vaguely related note, I think it would be a good change to instead of saying that all support/gunboats are the 2 point size (since the MAD combat system works on class for stat abilites). It would be more fitting to say that any sized ship can be listed as a support ship (changing its fleet cost, but not size/stats) by having it with an Offensive score of 0. In the current set up (if you use the MAD stat/combat system) a super-heavy cargo ship, carrier ship, or troop transport the size of a Star Destroyer can move nearly as fast as fighter craft & slightly faster than corvettes (assuming an equal Speed stat for all three).
