Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening,
So I am trying to establish this character in the Universe, and as I am fairly unaware as to the present status of it, I am uncertain as to where would be a fitting place to begin. I consider myself fairly flexible in the way I am willing to take my character, it'll all depend on what seems to be the most enticing. So without further ado, I assume that I should explain my character a little bit below.
Dain H'darr is a Special Forces Soldier born on Rendili. He has plenty of combat experience and is an expert strategist and infiltrator. He is Force sensitive, but untrained and has no desire to be trained in its application. For now, I have not finished his profile as since he is a brand new character concept for me, I would prefer to tailor his biography in a way so that it makes sense for him to be in the position that he is in - whether it's for the "good" side or the "bad" side.
Please bare with me for the time being because of the current lack of information in my character profile; it is something I am currently working one and something that will be getting fleshed out more thoroughly in the next few days to a week.
Also, if there are any questions you have about my character, please do not hesitate to ask.

Hello and welcome to JvS!
As far as factions are concerned, you have a few options;
The First Order (run by Nicademus Delvardus IV) is pretty much the most powerful faction around. With the Galactic Alliance (formerly run by myself, Standash Thul, and Zion Moraviel) being dissolved soon, the only major power left is the First Order. They have access to storm troopers, star destroyers... they are basically the Empire on JvS.
Now, I’m not fully aware of this, and it’s (to the best of my knowledge) just an idea being thrown about, but there is apparently a Rebellion style faction forming. Seeing as I’m not fully aware of the scope of all this, perhaps one of my fellow Roleplay Advocates would be more helpful in giving details about this.
There’s also quite a few minor factions forming among which there are:
Krennel Gulch’s CIS Reborn faction. It’s a small state centered around droids and controls a slice of territory centered around Geonosis.
There’s also Drez’s 501st Legion, based out of Kamino. They are basically like the original 501st Legion, and are a small government force. They use Clone Troopers and the like for their army.
Finally, there is my faction, the Galactic Alliance Remnant. Essentially formed from the former Deep State of the Galactic Alliance, they are a very small but very capable fighting force. They have access to extremely advanced technology, but they lack manpower. They produce most of what they need; however, the things they can’t produce are raided from other groups using Shock Troopers. They are generally assholes who are pretty much enemies with most everyone.

While not one of his fellow advocates I can clarify a bit of the Rebellion/Resistance sort of group that's forming. It's mostly in it's initial planning stages because the GA hasn't "officially" collapsed as of yet. However at some point in the next couple days I will be making a Bothan Officer who will participate in the battle of Mon Calamari before starting/joining the rebel/resistance group which will primarily focus on raiding and disrupting FO things as much as possible.
In addition to the other splinter factions mentioned there is also the Corellian system which will be declaring it's independence soon as well as the Tapani Sector (on JvS we use Fondor) where the noble houses are going to have a war which will lead to the reformation of the Tapani Empire.
Now with all the information disseminated I would love to make a personal plug of perhaps having you join up with my Bothan and helping out with the resistance since that sort of scenario seems like it could potentially be a good fit for the skills your character seems to have.

Yeah, I'll be creating the clone trooper legion thread tonight, but non-clones are also welcome to join the ranks.

The remaining faction to really consider would be the Blackguard. Granted it is a bunch of Sith and Dark Side aligned characters, but hey, doesn't mean a non-force can't thrive there. I would mention more, but it seems everyone else has got everything covered in terms of the existing factions.
If you aren't sure who to join, you can always go solo for a bit and link up with players, starting up SLs, to at least establish your character in the universe, maybe meet some of the factions along the ways. You don't have to join a faction after all. But we do encourage you find a crowd, faction or not, where you feel you can thrive as a writer and with your character.

To tell the truth, I was going to start off on my own, but it's definitely good for me to at least know what is going on in the Galaxy before I start getting myself tangled up in all of JvS's happenings. So far for my character, though, it look like the First Order or this Resistance group that is forming are likely the best scenarios for Dain to be in and I may just find myself with one of them before to long.
But as you said, Nicademus, it is definitely a good idea for me to establish myself and this character in the Universe before I become too involved with any faction.
Thank you for all the information and I will continue to keep my options open. Perhaps I will one day get to write with a few of you.

Really, go with smuggler, it's so much fun. And I'm building my crew up for a big, I mean BIG, storyline.

A suggestion is try to be a mercenary for various SLs and try to do work for the factions you are interested in to get a feel for how they work IC and even meet some people from both factions.
Help you determine which fits you best!

Thanks for all the information, but I think I have an idea of how I want to take this character to start off now. Touched up his bio and now I think I can actually begin his story soon. The rest of the profile is still being populated, but I don't imagine that is should be too much longer.
But realy, though. All the information is gratefully appreciated.
