"The bird people?" The intendant scoffed. "Why? They're useless. They are nothing but a bunch of monks and fishermen. If you are thinking about attempting to use them as fodder for your experiments, it would be a waste of time. They are too weak bodied to be useful. Just keep breeding the chazrachs."
He was honestly perplexed by the interest their illustrious leader had taken. It didn't make a lot of sense tactically.

Lyn held up a hand and shook her head slowly.
"You misunderstand. The Executor has forbidden experimentation on the population, at least so far as my caste is concerned. He has another type of experiment in mind. He would like you to settle the island you've been performing recognizance on."

Settle the island? Hmm, well, he supposed there was some potential in that. The weather wasn't always pleasant and those damn porgs shit on just about everything, but if he was leading a settlement effort then he would be in a position of authority most likely. Maybe there would even be a promotion to Prefect for him somewhere down the line.
"Okay." He said, nodding his own head. "I can get behind that. I'll need a handful of warrior caste to clear the bird people off the island, but that shouldn't take more than a day. Actually, I've been meaning to gut a few of them. I've been getting an awful lot of dirty looks from some of them birdies."

Again, there seemed to be a misunderstanding. Clearly the Praetorite high command had not seen fit to explain the purpose of their current project to the infiltrators assigned to gathering intelligence.
The headdress she wore seemed to writhe upon her head as it sensed the shaper's mood change through the symbiotic connection they shared. She sucked air in through her teeth, hesitating delivering the bad news to the intendant. Eventually, she spoke in her soft tone.
"Unfortunately that will not be possible. Your instructions are not to eliminate or remove the current population that occupies the island. The Praetorite wishes for you to...peacefully, settle the island. They wish for you to attempt cohabitation with the avian race there."

Kar's mouth was agape, his jaw felt like it damn near hit the floor. When the shock wore off, he let out the harshest curse he knew.
"Yammka's bloody cock!" His jaw snapped shut and he hissed through yellow teeth. "That's idiotic. We're going to run into ten times the amount of problems if we do that. It would make settlement efforts far easier if we removed them." Whoever was making the decisions these days was clearly suffering from a case of brain-rot.
He paused long enough to think of an alternative.
"How about this. We won't kill them, we'll just relocate them to one of the other islands. That seems like it would accomplish the same goal."

She pursed her lips. This was going about as well as could be expected, which wasn't very well at all. Lyn understood his concerns, she shared them frankly. Cohabitation of infidel planets was more of a pipe-dream than a true possibility. Their peoples were just too different. Yet these orders had come from the top. It was just too bad obedience hadn't been bred into the intendant caste like it had the warrior and priest castes. Still, she was confident Kar Yin would do as instructed. It was his domain that seemed to call the shots these days.
"Executor, please, mind your blasphemies." She chided. "Your reservations I understand completely, but the purpose of the trial is to see if cohabitation can be accomplished. From what I am told the Praetorite high command is committed to colonization efforts, which can only be accomplished through two means. The first, conquest, which we have tried before and failed at. The second, coexistence, which is what we are attempting now. Consider this, if our efforts on this world are successful, we will have a guideline for future expansion. If we simply return to our old habits, we will make enemies and face potential extinction. Our people need space to grow. This is the first step towards that goal."

Obviously the decision had already been made so he wasn't sure why he was even bothering to argue. It wasn't like he was about to refuse an order that had clearly come from the lips of Nem Yin. Though there was an abundance of rumours that the head of his domain was soft when it came to the infidel species, he had always thought the Executor had a clever head on his shoulders. Perhaps there was something he was missing, something only their leader saw that wasn't readily apparent. At the very least he was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Kar threw up his hands dismissively, chuckling at the lunacy of it all.
"Alright, fine. I know when I'm beat. In that case, better to not send me any warrior caste. I'll need at least one priest, a few shapers to help set up living arrangements on the island, and the bulk of the settlers had best be worker caste. Former shamed ones, ideally. For whatever reason they get along better with the infidels. Yun-o only knows why."

"You shall have the resources you require." She said, offering the Yuuzhan Vong equivalent of a coy smile, which to the infidel races likely looked like more of a threat of intimidation. "Expect settlers from Zonama Sekot to be arriving in the coming weeks. In the meantime, feel free to procure anything you feel you might need from the damutek here. This will continue to serve as the Praetorite's base of operation while we monitor the planet and your efforts upon the island."

Taking care of settlers, it wasn't something he had ever thought he'd be doing. He had always assumed he would die on some infiltration or intelligence gathering mission for the Executor. This was a change of pace, though he wasn't certain yet if it was welcome.
"Fantastic. I could do with a shower while I'm here, to wash some of the salt and stink of bird shit off my cloaker." A dark chuckle followed the statement.

In the coming weeks, several organic transport vessels arrived from Zonama Sekot to drop off Yuuzhan Vong settlers. Kar Yin stood on a large protruding rock near the bottom of the island, watching as the transports set down in the water and extended molleung worms to the rocky ground. Large bio-engineered beasts of burden were led off the ships, carrying supplies necessary for the day to day survival of the settlers. Lyn Kwaad even came up from the underwater research damutek to consult with several of the shaping adepts who were be setting up living spaces for the settlers.
Cohabitation with the existing population on the island would be difficult, given the obvious differences and somewhat invasive nature of the Yuuzhan Vong, but several policies and protocols had been put into place to attempt to avoid conflict. The original inhabitants would keep to the upper portion of the island, whereas the Yuuzhan Vong would establish their soon to be growing population at the bottom portion of the island.
Teams of worker caste under the supervision of the shaper adepts were already starting to grow yorik-coral and plant a variety of fauna native to Yuuzhan'tar. Kar's mqaaq'it gazed from the work of his people up towards the higher reaches of the island, where several of the avian locals watched with something he could only describe as concern. From what he had gleaned they were a peaceful people, so the threat of violence was likely non-existent, but it would still be worth keeping an eye on them. He offered one of them a sneer and waved, causing the local to turn away and go back to whatever routine activity they were involved in.

Yorik-coral structures were taking shape near the bottom portion of the island, providing a rustic set of living quarters for the settlers getting used to their new home. Crops and various other Yuuzhan Vong plants were grown where space was available. The shapers on hand had to make a few alterations here and then there to adapt the non-native fauna to the environment, but it was nothing outside the ken of their abilities. Fortunately food was abundant even before the crops were ready. Vangaak treaded the water and returned with holds full of fish, and all one had to do was toss a nang-hul into the air and a half dozen porgs would fall down. The beakless birds became a quick favorite for the Yuuzhan Vong settlers, usually roasted over a spit. The only downside of the large porg population was all the bird shit that ended up on everything. Lyn Kwaad was already attempting to bio-engineer the yorik-coral to absorb the bird dropping and feed on them for nutrients, though that would probably take some time.

As time went on, a certain rhythm started to unfold in the day to day activities of the Yuuzhan Vong now inhabiting the island. Like the primitive bird people that were native to the planet, they had begun to spend a great deal of time fishing, relying on the sea for most of their needs. Any excess food stores were distributed amongst the locals, who at first treated the outsiders with much distrust, but slowly and surely they grew accustomed to the immigrant population. It helped that while the Yuuzhan Vong bio-technology could in some instances be invasive, it also kept the environment in good shape. If anything the environment had improved since they had arrived, including the smell, as now the yorik-coral had been adapted to absorb the porg droppings that previously coated just about everything.
Kar Yin, for his efforts and great success, was promoted to Prefect. He had assumed living quarters inside one of the caverns near the top of the island, obviously altered and enhanced with his peoples organic technology. Life was good, easy almost. Any misgivings he had about the impossibility of cohabitation melted away with every passing day. It wasn't just possible, it was actually happening, every single day before his very eyes. Peace... He smiled. Who would have thought? Well, the Executor had, he supposed.

Though the cultural rift between the Yuuzhan Vong and the native Lanai was vast, a peaceful co-existence thus far had been achieved. When the vangaak returned from the sea, their bellies full of the days catch, a portion of the fish was shared with the locals. Within a few months time, the avian like fisher people would actually wait next to the shore around dusk, waiting for the organic water trawlers to bring in their load, even going so far as to wave them in. Being a merchant people, the Lanai quickly developed a working understanding of the Yuuzhan Vong's language, and likewise, many of the colonists learned to speak a few words of the local lingo. Not being one to rely on a tizowyrm, the sharp minded intendant Kar Yin was among the first of his people to learn how to speak it fluently. After being promoted to Prefect, he took to the role with surprising gusto. The Lanai living on the upper portion of Temple Island even began to treat him in the capacity of a local leader, like a mayor, though no formal elections were ever held.
Here, somewhat isolated from the rest of their collective people, the pressures of domain and caste were lessened considerably. Relations were able to blossom between Yuuzhan Vong that in the past would have been expressly forbidden.
A number of females were already showing the first signs of pregnancy and Kar knew it wouldn't be long before the small colony outgrew the island and needed to expand to other settlements across the planet. Relying on a few of the Lanai merchants he had formed a working relationship with, he drew up plans for resettlement in less occupied areas, not already home to Lanai populations. Surprised to even think it, for his own protestations about working with the locals had been initially the most outspoken, he found himself hoping for a day where their two societies might be completely intertwined.
The Lanai especially took a liking to the Praetorite's bounty of Sekotan Green, imported from the seed world itself on the rare occasion a transport made it out this way. They exchange the medicinal herb for knowledge of the planet, such as ideal fishing spots (though the sea was plentiful) and weather predictions. Pretty soon there was hardly a fishermen around that wasn't puffing away on a pipeful.

Waves rolled in beneath the intendant Kar Yin as the Yuuzhan Vong rested his boney butt on a rock protruding above the ocean waters, his feet submerged in the brine, occasionally scraping the algae from his uncomfortable platforms sides. In his corpse grey calloused hands, he held a long fishing pole made of a living reed, its hook a water-breathing spider and its fishing line the web. Several feet down, the multi-faceted eyes of the arachnid waiting as a fish was drawn to its bioluminescent form. At the least moment it clutched the silvery scaled fish with its eight legs and sank in its fangs, injected a paralytic toxin into the creature that would also serve to marinate its future filets. Kar pulled back on the ride as he felt the line vibrate, retracting the spider with its catch and letting out a hearty cry of excitement at his success. Doing so caused him to lose his balance and he nearly stumbled over backways, but managed to catch himself by placing his free hand on the rock. Taking a moment to resituate himself, he reeled in the line the rest of the way and removed the spider from the fish, placing the catch in a yorik-coral bucket full of ice beside him.
Kar took a moment to refresh himself with a swig from his bladder-flask of sparkbee honey. He smacked his lips, savouring his small supply of the potent narcotic. As leader of the colony, he got first dibs on such things whenever they arrived from Zonama Sekot, which was happening with less frequency these days. The locals brewed a heady beverage of their own with similar potency, but he had never grown accustomed to the taste. Fortunately he wouldn't need to suffer it much longer. Unbeknownst to the others, he was putting together a secret sparkbee farm. Then he'd never have to worry about running out. Polishing off the last of the flask, he dropped his line back in the water and continued to fish.

Water dripped off Kar Yin's barnacle crusted crab-plate as he emerged from the sea, carrying his amphistaff down at his side with several fish still thrust through its length, captured during his latest attempt at spear fishing. Further down the coastal shore he could see several docked Vangaak trawlers unloading holds full of fish that were destined for the inhabitants of the island who would preferably cook them on a spit over a roaring camp cookfire, as opposed to making them into another stew. He'd had enough fish stew lately to last him a lifetime. One after the other he removed the fish from his amphistaff and then carefully gutted each one with his coufee, dumping the left over chum back into the ocean where it would eventually float to the bottom and feed the wide variety of aquatic species that called the planet home. Wrapping the cleansed filets in robeskin, he climbed up the rocky steps towards the tide worn cave he was currently using as his personal quarters and office.Along the way he passed by a group of lounging thala-siren, female judging by the mammary glands on them, that were sunbathing on the rocks. Members of the Yuuzhan Vong worker caste would occasionally stop by and pump the creatures engorged teats for nutritious and highly delicious green milk. Thala-siren dairy products were the second largest export for the Yuuzhan Vong colony, second only to Porg meat, of which there seemed a near endless supply. A bit parched, Kar helped himself to a quick swallow of milk right from the source before heading further up the steps. He rubbed the back of his sleeve over his mouth, wiping away the green milk-mustache that had formed.Upon reaching the upper most portion of the island, which was cohabited with the Lanai caretakers, he raised a hand to his forehead and squinted through the glare of the sun. In the distance he could make out a lobster shaped transport emerging from the brine where the water was deepest around the island. Without question the yorik-vec had originated from the underwater damutek of the Praetorite where the colony carried out some of its more private and clandestine activities. Though they had successfully managed to coexist with the lanai, some things were still for Yuuzhan Vong eyes only. After rising above the clouds blowing in from the east, the coral craft disappeared from Kar's view, likely headed for Lehon or Zonama Sekot, possibly even Ilum.

Near the summit of Temple Island, Prefect Kar Yin was standing over a crudely carved stone table, moving several insectile biots across a gameboard as he mentally calculated how much of their latest haul from the sea they needed to send to Lehon. After the events of Shili-Secondus and the destruction of most of the Praetorite Council, things had become somewhat quiet in the Unknown Regions. They received less frequent villip transmissions from Zonama Sekot, and even less from the Yu'shaa who was believed to be slumming it in infidel space at the moment. So imagine his surprise when the leader of the Handmaiden's of Yun-Ne'Shel reached out to him via villip. Alone in his office, which was basically a cave that had been hollowed out near the top of the island, Kar dropped to a knee as he recognized the face represented in three dimensional detail. His glowing mqaaq'it focused on the floor as he bowed his head, unable to raise his ocular implants to look her in her glowing pink eyes."Mir...Master Shaper." He quickly corrected, biting his lip as he tripped over his words. "It is a pleasure." Mira's beautiful visage practically beamed in delight as her image rested its focus on Kar's prostrating form. Her voice was like warm sparkbee honey when she informally spoke to the head of the Temple Island colony.{{ The pleasure is mine, Prefect Kar Yin. Please... }} She softly chuckled, the sweetest sound Kar swore he had ever heard. {{...rise, Kar. How long have we known each other? There is no need to bow on my account. }}Somewhat unsure of himself, Kar raised his head and met the Master Shaper's stunning gaze. Though she spoke true, they had known each other for many long years, he still felt like a Yuuzhan Vong coming out of the creche whenever he was in her presence. She simply had that affect on him."As you wish, my la...Mira." His eye sacs pulsed beneath his salt stained face. "How may I be of service to the Handmaidens of Yun-Ne'Shel?" {{ Ah, it is actually I who was trying to determine how the Handmaidens might be of service to you and our people's colony on Ahch-To. How fair things? Hmmm? And what can you tell me about the situation on Lehon? }}Mira Yim, the greatest mind to grace their people in centuries, was asking how she could help him? By the Yun'o, that was a surprise. Of course, he had no intention of allowing this opportunity to pass them by. Even if the colony needed for little."Truthfully Mira, we don't need much. The sea provides for a wealth of sustenance to keep our bellies full, and trade with the locals had taken care of most of our other needs. If we are lacking in anything, it is amenities. The shapers we have are well suited to maintain the small structures we have raised since establishing a settlement, but we lack for some of the more complex organisms for further development and growth." Crossing his arms over his chest, he leaned against the stone table he had been using and shook his head gently. "But we aren't desperate by any means. I suppose we could use a few more transports to ferry supplies. Traffic from Zonama Sekot has been slow since...well, I'm sure you heard about the council."{{ Nem filled me in on the details. It was a tragedy; we lost a lot of good Yuuzhan Vong that day. That is why I wanted to reach out. There may not be a Praetorite council going forwards, but if I can help provide the means for your colonies success }}"We would be most indebted to you. That said, I think you should focus your attention on Lehon first. We were running supplies at first, but that's slowed since they finished their move to the old cave systems on the beach. They have a few vangaak so their food supply is no longer an issue. I'm sure they'd appreciate an actual damutek instead of a tide carved hole in the ground."{{ Then I shall focus my efforts there. Thank you, Kar. I have missed you. Perhaps I can arrange a visit out there once the Ossus Project has been completed. }}"I would like that very much. And its us who should be thanking you, Mira." {{ Think nothing of it. Yuuzhan bless you and your people, Kar. }} Transmission ended.

In the sky above Temple Island, a furry blue Pooba holding a hang-glider soared through the air, flying next to a flock of Porg that were on their way to the scat and salt covered hill top. Pip's fuzzy blue eyes were closed as he focused on his surroundings, relying entirely on the Force to guide him. It wouldn't have mattered even if they were open. The poor little Pooba had lost his sight to a degenerative disease when he was young, committing him to a galaxy of endless white. Not that it mattered. He felt the air currents like an extension of his own senses, trusting them with his very life. As he swooped down low, years of training with the Shapers of Kro Var allowed the tiny monk to manipulate the winds around him, creating a cushion of air as he came into land. He folded the glider in his grip as his blue furred paws touched the grassy hill-top, folding the wings into a collapsible staff. The top of the island overlooked the quant little village the Shapers currently called home, and while Pip certainly couldn't see it, he could feel his brothers and sisters hard at work as they devoted their bodies to training.
Shrugging off his shirt, Pip sucked in a deep breath of air, puffing out his little chest to reveal a furry body honed into an impressive physique. He scooped down to pick up his plain and simple monkish garment and strode down to the village shirtless, flexing his powerful biceps and pectorals, occasionally causing his fuzzy manly breasts to pop.
There were many different schools of training amongst the Shapers. Some preferred to summon heat and flame, wielding fire as a weapon. Others manipulated the water, wielding it like a whip or turning it to ice. Pip's specialty amongst the Shapers was air-bending. He create manipulate the air around him so finely, he could use it to cut like a blade, or blast a large opponent off their feet with a powerful gust of air. One day he hoped to use it to fly, like the porgs that called the island home, though for now he still relied on his glider-staff.
Pip waved a furry blue hand as he approached the village, coming to a stop as a duel was unfolding between two monks of different specialties.

Ajax was built every bit like the element he had mastered years ago. He was a massive mountain of flesh and muscle, immovable as the Water Shaper known as Sillena guided a blast of water right at him. His arms took the brunt of the impact as he held them in front of his massive frame in a crossguard. As the water subsided, he swung his arms down to his sides and executed several different strikes, causing a pillar of stone to burst up from the ground. He struck an open palm forward, causing a disc of rock to break off and go flying at Sillena. But the Water Shaper was lithe and fast, dodging Ajax's first strike. But he had anticipated his foes moves and had already alternated striking on open palm with both hands, sending several more rocks to fly through the air.
He struck a downward chop with his right hand then, causing one of the discs to break away when it was moments away from hitting Sillena. The Water Shaper falling to the ground and offering up the gesture for surrender. Ajax smile and let out a laugh as he crossed the training field and grabbed her hand, hauling her up to her feet "A fine match! You've come a long way as a Water Shaper, but you still have some way to go before you can beat me." Sillena gave a short bow as she extracted her hand from his "Some day soon Ajax... just you wait. Just as water erodes away the rock, I too shall erode away your strength." Ajax let out a jovial laugh, giving Sillena a light smack on the back "That's the spirit! Ah, look who has shown up..." He cross the training ground and set his gaze down upon Pip " Pip..." He extended his right fist down.

To an outsider, it might have seemed somewhat comical to see the tiny blue furred pooba form his right paw into a fist and use his fuzzy knuckles to bump the boulder sized and rock hard fist of the mountainous slab of muscle before him, but for Sillena and the other Shapers of Kro Var in the temporary village they had made for themselves on Temple Island, this was a fairly common sight. Despite their many differences, both in martial style of combat as well more obviously in size, the two shapers were practically inseparable and had been that way since the days of their youth. One as immoveable as stone, the other as free flowing as the wind, and together a force to be reckoned with. Another thing they had in common is that they had both been pining over Sillena's affection since they were kids.
Holding his collapsed glider-staff in his left paw, Pip grinned mischievously as his cataract white pupils stared up first at Ajax, then at Sillena. "The trick to beating this marble sculpted giant is to hit him in the parts that aren't as big as boulders." He then quickly lifted his staff and tried to stamp the butt end down on the toes of Ajax's right foot. The two were known for taking playful, and frequent, shots at one another.

Sillena would have had to have been as blind as Pip or as dense as Ajax not to have noticed their rivalry where she was concerned. She had often teased and even humoured them both at different times, her affection for them waxing and waning as that of the tide. She would always care for them, for that was the ocean upon which the tides rose and fell. But there were times when one of them would do something that would cause a ripple across that body of water. But sometimes it had felt like a losing war where her feelings toward them were concerned sometimes. She crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow as Pip spoke of having a trick to beating Ajax.
Ajax had already pre-empted his diminutive friends strike and clenched his left fist, causing a half dome of rock to sprout from the earth and cover his toes for the glider-staff to strike against. "Not so faaaaaaassss..." He suddenly felt an outstretched leg impact the back of his other leg. With his right foot encased in stone, he could not properly counter the shift in balance caused by his swept leg. He fell backward and landed hard upon the ground, causing a small puff of dust to emanate out from hitting the ground. His gaze looked up and to his left side, his vision filling with the all too familiar red skinned Twi'Lek woman known as Uzura as she was straightening up and dusting herself off. "I find a good distraction works well to sweep the leg... You let your guard down." He released his fist, causing the stone to retreat back into the ground as he left out a laugh once more. "I suppose I did..." Uzura shook her head and huffed, before extending a hand down for him to grab a hold of and get back to his feet. He wrapped an arm each around Uzura and Sillena's shoulders and pulled them in close to either side of him. Uzura looked less than pleased, while Sillena shyly smiled. "It's good to have everyone together!" "Yes, well I wish we were a little less together..."
