*There have been, over the course of galactic history, somewhere near a hundred empires that decided to make Sartinaynian their capital planet. It is so unusual, and yet so commonplace, that even now the cities of this terrestrial planet bear testament to the vastly different cultures that used to hold sway. In the more recent times, it has been the Imperial cultures that reigned supreme, so that even now the world bears the name 'Bastion' anymore. And Imperial ships still patrol the system, although by now their empires are little more than than names whispered by the soft voice of history.*
*I sit here, in a transport freighter headed for Ravelin Spaceport. Window seat-- no one wants to get very close to a Chiggnash. It's just as well that they don't. In solitude with my thoughts, I have the freedom to consider what became of the various regimes that rose and fell here. To consider of the similitude to that which I intend to build. Here on Bastion...a new beginning. How appropriate.*
*There is a new beginning rising. I can do it-- create a new face for the universe. But there are so many prerequisite tasks, so many preparations to be drawn up, that I hardly feel at ease taking this reprieve to visit Bastion. Surely, an enriching experience. And even so, is this the best use of my time?*
*Well, that remains to be seen.* *The freighter, undisturbed by the current of my thoughts, swoops ever yonder towards the Ravelin Spaceport.* |

Bastion....it all started here. The visions I encountered years ago showed me a glimpse of this place, a small peek into the future before me. With the climax of my existence now bare before me, I knew it was time. The Dark Lord had been waiting in slumber for far too long and it was time for his return to his people. But how did I reach this destination? How was I chosen to be the physical vessel of ghostly presence? I could still remember when the visions first came to me: I was on Korriban, years ago. The first Sith master I ever studied under had just passed away and left me to my own devices. For the first few weeks, I continued to train within the capital of Korriban, but slowly, I began experiencing blistering migraines which eventually lead to the visions. In the realm of the unconscious, I the essences of the Dark Lord standing before me, directing me to his resurrection. For months, I struggled to understand the meaning of these messages, these clues buried in the darkness of my mind.
Over time, the pain associated with the visions subsided with the aid of my new master, Lord Malvas. He was vital in helping me understand what the spirit was instructing and guiding me to understand. But there was a cost. The closer I came to understanding the knowledge set before me by the Dark Lord, the further I drifted from Lord Malvas. It only took months for me to gather my belongings and leave his homeworld behind as I set out to travel the stars. Finally, I found myself living here on Bastion. After all, this was the Dark Lord's home for many years before his passing into chaos. While I lived here on Bastion, I did some covert work and finally stumbled upon the grave of the Dark Lord. The time to bring his soul back from the brink of extinction was soon, but I had to gather the energy to muster such a feat. As I stood at the door of my home, I looked out to a bright sunny day. The clouds dotted the sky overhead, but I knew that was change when I began my ritual. Sith Magic would change the setting eventually.

*In the foothills surrounding Ravelin, there exists a certain swamp. And like many swamps, there is a dense level of vegetation, and tree cover; the humidity in this area causes a permanent, thick fog to lie in place over the surface of the water, making travel a hazardous prospect. Travel is not impossible, however, for 30 Sabaoth Fighters are flying in single file formation along a path which I can only assume that the pilots have flown so often as to have memorized. Their sleek bodies cut through the fog, leaving behind nothing more than curling tendrils of water vapor, and exhaust particles that will mingle with the swamp gases and leave no traces. In unified precision, the small 1-man craft weave between the trees at treacherously low altitude. And at some hidden signal, as the fighters approach, the waterbed splits along a fissure too precise to be of natural origin. The dark cavern opened as a result is the apparent destination of Glaive Squadron, since without tempering their velocity the craft dive into the abyss.*
*What sets this swamp apart from the other swamps on Bastion is the fact that during the Clone Wars, it had been selected as a home for the Republic loyalists, who opposed Muunilinst and the Confederacy-aligned regime. They organized themselves and, with the aid of a particular high-ranking government official, were able to secure the funds to construct their base of operations in this swamp. Their name became the Androsi, after the classic Sartinaynian word for 'true human'. To secure military materiel, using their contact, they managed to steal vehicles and weapons from Cavik Toth's mercenaries while his crew was visiting Muunilinst during the War. With these supplies, they performed a number of successful raids on droid production facilities built on-planet and in low atmosphere, always able to vanish without a trace afterwards. When Clone Protocol 66 was enacted, the Androsi suffered a schism. A splinter faction, calling themselves the Argoni ('cease fire') wanted to support the new Galactic Empire. However, they faced fierce opposition from the rest of the Androsians, who felt that it had been illegitimate means that brought the Empire to power and opposed the dissolution of the Senate.*
*The Argonians were expelled from the Androsians' midst. Any who remained on Bastion were hunted mercilessly by Androsi assassins, so they fled offworld, where their intimate knowledge of the Androsi collective could not be used to harm them. The Androsians, now fighting effectively a two-front war, had to cut back heavily on operations; but, as long as their base of operations remained a secret, they could continue their violent opposition to Imperial rule. Thus, their greatest fear is the possibility of Argonians returning to Bastion in order to divulge the knowledge that could bring them to a complete end.*
*In recent years, the Androsians have been focused on building numbers and training their men. After several generations of fighting, morale is approaching the breaking point; new recruits, while admittedly rare, help the morale issue. The recent revival of Glaive Squadron has helped in this area. The pilots now return to base to be celebrated as the heroes who have allowed the Androsians to continue to live in freedom.* |

Now spreading outward into the foothills of Ravlin was the droid divisions of the Fel 9th Fleet, the 85th Legion and the 10th Vehicle Corps led by the droid commander Warleader, an AI in the body of a B2 Super Battle Droid, to any passer-by it would look odd for droids and vehicles formerly used by the CIS to bear the mark of the Galactic Empire, but their uses on the battlefield were essential to Moff Tien's ground force, logic dictated that a droid's photo-receptors would pick up any residual heat or ion emissions that were made by the fighters but just like the orbital scans, these droids found nothing. Warleader himself was puzzled as to how an entire squadron of fighters could just disappear, the chances of a terrorist faction having cloaking devices was small and them having a cloak for their base was even smaller, as his patrol group moved through a swamp he made a note to check any Imperial or remaining CIS databases for similar events and find out if these terrorists have only struck Bastion

*What had made this base so effective during the Clone Wars was that the terrain is unfavorable towards droid operations. To effectively scour the swamp, the droids would need to be there for potentially weeks-- all while deteriorating in the high humidity and treacherous foot conditions. While a grid sweep may have proven worthwhile, the scale of the operations that the Androsians performed never truly justified a search like this, especially with no guarantee of success. This is definitely a job better suited for human soldiers. However, with the AI Warleader in charge of the operation, the 85th Legion has the next-best thing.*
*The reason the fighters' heat signatures and ion trails are not detectable is quite straightforward, actually; such detection measures are really optimum for clear conditions. Thermal detection is another way of saying infrared imaging; this technique is complicated by the high levels of moisture in the swamp air. Water has a delightful degree of heat absorption, which is great for applications like cooling, and terrible for applications like trying to observe ambient infrared signals without anything interfering with their transmission. The permanent fog of this swamp provides one of the best forms of cover against detection. A similar story is true for the chemical trails, which have chemical composition not very different from the bio-emitted decomposition products. What can be detected is virtually identical to what is already there.*
*The same problem goes for the Androsians. The pilots had to have memorized the terrain, because their visual and sensor feeds are null. Just remember what it was like for Luke, landing on Dagobah! How well did that go for him, when he didn't know where to go? (How did he manage to fly off the planet without crashing again, for that matter?) Technology is great, but you must also know its limitations. Thanks to the swamp conditions, the Androsians know that it would have served no purpose to set up a network of sensors to provide advanced warning of invaders. They are blind to the (hazardously) encroaching droid division, unless there exists some external way for them to come to know of this operation.* |
*Within the Underground Base, the heroes of Glaive Squadron are being congratulated on their success. One of their members is excitedly reporting a shot-by-shot detail of the event to a mixed-age crowd of enthusiastic supporters.* |
=Excited Pilot= "...and here they are, kid you not, the Argonians are only half a click from landing, and THAT is when Trenton gives us the order to open fire!" *The crowd gasps-- they're a good audience-- and in near-unison all heads turn to look at Trenton, wordlessly asking his explanation. Trenton is a thin man, in his early twenties, with dark hair and blue eyes. His expression is a vague smile, listening politely to the story in support of his wingman, but almost certainly preoccupied with other, more serious thoughts. As the crowd glances at him, his expression never wavers, but his eyes close in a perfect display of self-confidence.* |
=Trenton= "What he didn't tell you is that we had jammed their communications from the moment they arrived planetside. I wanted to give them as long as possible to surrender, because this was a defenseless ship. But the Argonians refused to speak up. We were given no choice...so we did what we had to do." =Excited Pilot= "...yeah. BUT! Tell them about your shot! Trenton's the one who sank the final hit!" =Trenton= "Well, yes. I couldn't have done it alone, though."

Waleader knew that the 85th Legion could not stay in the swamps for too long as the extreame moisture would rust them out given enough time, a few of his B1s had already started to experience malfunctions and he decided that any further exploration of the swamps would best be left to those who weren't going to be killed by the swamp's conditions and the 85th Legion vacates the swamp entirely after a B2's leg joint ceased up. The droids that experienced malfunction were recovered and sent to maintenance centers in the city while the rest of the division continued to search the rest of the hills around Ravelin. After finding nothing they return to the city

Gunships and shuttles crowded the skies over Bastion as the 24th Legion of the Imperial 9th Army was deployed for action. The broadcast, spoken by the High Admiral, had stirred the zealous fever of the population for the Imperialist cause. Yet the selfishness of the reigning governor delayed their full assimilation. Even as the craft descended upon Bastion, smoke could be seen rising from the outskirts of Ravelin. Reports began flooding the pilot's communications, indicating that pro-Imperial riots from among the population. Only a small fraction of planetary security remained loyal to the petty governor as he attempted to flee the capital. The rest had joined the side of the rioters and moved to secure the planet for the First Order.
The 24th Legion was deployed on the northern outskirts of Ravelin. Reports indicated that heavy fighting was in this area as armed rioters engaged what remained of the governor's loyalist security forces, a token presence, but nonetheless giving a good fight. The governor had retreated to his manor, which was once the palace of a Moff from the days of Pellaeon's Imperial Remnant. It was fortified by additional security, both organic and mechanical. It was gonna be a tough nut to crack, but the palace would surely be overrun in no time. Once majority of the 8,000 troops were deployed by the 24th Legion, Commander Lakir, the commanding officer of this division, ordered the Stormtroopers to reinforce the advancing rioters. Although the Grand General had hoped for a bloodless assimilation, the Imperials were forced to fight in order to stamp out this corrupted weed that lived upon Bastion.

More shuttles and gunships streaked the sky as a company of Lord Xakire's elite guard accompanied him to the surface to meet with the rest of the First Order's troops. Upon landing Xakire immediately seeked out the senor officer of the 24th Legion.
"Who is in charge here?" He asked the first officer he found, his voice sounding slightly robotic as his helmet filtered his voice.

Predator Starfighters and even more transports fly across the sky to the First Order's landing zone, once there the Predators begin flying in a perimeter around the LZ as the transports unload the 101st Devision's Stormtroopers and the 85th Legion's droids along with AT-RCTs and AT-RTs of XXX Corps and Advanced Dwarf Spider Droids from the 10th Vehicle Corps. Organizing the troops was a B2 Super Battle Droid with red markings on its shoulders, General Warleader
=Warleader= All units form up, Advanced Spider Droids in front followed by the 85th Legion's units, Droideka units will lead our assault on enemy infantry positions, heavy defenses will be handled by the Advanced Spider Droids. Tavington, I will leave the deployment of the 101st and XXX Corps to you and General Darkstar
=Tavington= Right! Men, whatever gets by the 85th we'll mop up, 500 of you men keep our LZ out of enemy hands, XXX Corps' AT-RCTs will go in front of us with the AT-RTs acting as the rear guard for our forces
Finally, a Single TIE Phantom lands near Moff Tien's forces and General Darkstar exits the TIE dressed in a Grey robe with the symbol of the old Galactic Empire on the back of it, a single lightsaber was hanging from his belt, the 500 troops assigned to secure the LZ were just starting to move into a perimeter when he arrived, Darkstar then looked around for the main commander of the First Order assault force

Vadirr was a recent member of the Imperial 9th Army, joining up with the Grand General during his time as Moff of the Deep Core for the Galactic Empire. His capabilities earned him a promotion when Nicademus became Emperor and was elevated to the rank of High Colonel and made the commanding officer of the 24th Legion. As the two are shown to his person, Vadirr was reviewing a report from Muunilist. His eyes looked at Xakire and Darkstar before handing it to them.Seems the IGBC attempted an assassination upon the Grand General in our absence. He survived with only minor injuries, but the entire Imperial 9th Army has been deployed to Mariunhus. From the initial reports, things are going very poorly for the Banking Clan. He reaffirmed our orders here, indicating that we must focus on securing Bastion. He waves his hand over the table to the side of him, making a holoscreen appear. Red dots were indications of massive riots and street fighting between loyalist forces and the pro-Imperial rioters. The High Colonel gestures to where the heaviest fighting was, some forty miles from their position due southwest. This is where the Governor's Palace is located and the bulk of what security forces remain under his command. The rest are scattered across the outskirts of Ravelin and haven't been able to break away from their present engagements. Armed rioters and sympathetic security personnel are currently keeping the governor pinned at his palace. We are gonna make this a quick and swift engagement in order to minimize casualties.

Xakire was uneasy expanding while there is trouble in their backyard but the General can handle himself he thought. Even though he had only met him once Xakire was glad Nicademus survived the plot. He respected the General for all he had accomplished especially as he was not force sensitive.
"My elite company and I could assault the Governor's Palace, we will of course require reinforcements if there are too many of the loyalist defending it," Xakire told the High Colonel, somewhat eager for action.

Darkstar looked over the map for a moment before speaking
=Darkstar= I could spread out the 101st and XXX Corps to deal with these smaller firefights, however, an assault on the palace could be problematic if they have set up encampments of heavy weapons. He then turns to Lord Xakire I'd like to send General Warleader's 85th Legion along with your forces if that turns out to be the case, his Advanced Dwarf Spider Droids can deal with them and minimize casualties.

Xakire thought about it for a few seconds before answering.
"I believe his forces should be sufficient very well," he said in a authoritative voice, then he turned to High Colonel Vadirr, "Will you allow for our assault on the palace?" Xakire asked, still sounding authoritative, Xakire want prepared to take no as an answer unless for a very good reason.

Vadirr looks down at the map once more, examining the approach to the Governor's Palace. Intel stated that it was built during the height of the Pentastar Alignment and used later by the Imperial Remnant as a residence for one of the officials of the Moff Council. The Advanced Dwarf Spider Droids could do some damage, yet they needed to know how defensive the area was.
Go ahead with the assault, Lord Xakire. But be wary, this palace has a long history with the Empire. It is most likely heavily fortified given that Bastion is the key to holding the Imperial Sector and is one of the greatest fortress worlds of the Empire. Our intel is a bit outdated so who knows what this reigning Moff has added to its defenses. I will have the 24th Legion act as a reserve for the assault.
The 24th Legion had come with only minimal mechanized units; 20 AT-ATs and 30 AT-STs. Usage of the AT-ATs would be too devastating than what was planned. However, if necessary, Vadirr would send in the armored units of the 24th Legion, the AT-STs to assist in cracking open the nut that was the Governor's Palace.

Xakire nodded to Vadirr before speaking.
"Do we have any intelligence on the palaces defenses? We could definitely use the edge, surely there is someone sympathetic to our cause that know the layout of the palace?" Xakire asked hopefully.

Vadirr pulls out what intel they had and sets it down on the table for the two commanding officers.
Those within the palace are diehard loyalists, Lore Xakire. Their families were offered great power and money for remaining loyal to the Moff's government and policies. They are few in number however. They only make up a few thousand in total at palace with additional groups scattered across these outskirts. The only way we can enter the palace is by punching through. As for our intel, its somewhat outdated; dates to the time of the Second Imperial Civil War and when the planet was occupied by the Empire-in-Exile under Roan Fel.

Vadirr looks over at Xakire and gestures to the palace location on the holomap.
You will be supported by the armor units that are being deployed by the Praetorian. Which are mostly 30 AT-STs. Enough to punch any hole in whatever defensive formations and weaponry they have on that Moff palace. However, given Bastion's relatively isolated position, they are probably as outdated as our intel. For now, let us advance and determine a course of action when we arrive there.
With that said, the High Colonel would turn away and walked off to prepare the 24th Legion to march for battle.

Xakire nodded and then used his holocomunicator to call for the rest of his commando battalion and a small amount of his Armored Regiment. The reinforcements were transported to the surface with the utmost efficiency and imminently prepared for battle. Following his troops assembly and a quick brief of the mission Xakire seeked out High Colonel Vadirr.
"My commandos and a small amount of my armor are ready Colonel," Xakire informed the colonel.
