Mariah growled as she pushed herself up, and sure enough, she could hear his footsteps approach her. He couldn’t leave well enough alone, and in her times of weakness, he felt the need to prey upon that. Although even her instinct told her that it wasn’t in a manner seeking her demise, it made it all the more frustrating. At the very least, he kept his distance as she sat up and dusted off the sand and pebbles that became lodged in the palms of her hands.
“Lying is far more effort than silence,” she murmured, “but what it really boils down is just hearing it from me, hmm? I sometimes wonder where your misplaced sense of nobility is derived from.”
His offer was appealing, at least. To leave and even wipe away his memories of this place. However, as much as Mariah’s fire urged her to spew some venomous agreement to that offer, Aria couldn’t help but continue her meddlesome annoyance. Perseverance. Stubbornness. No matter which way they wanted to view it, the sisters’ were still at war with one another within Mariah’s mind, and although weakened, Aria still had some fight left in her to replay just a single moment in time… Mariah growled quietly as she carefully made her way back to her feet. Before continuing her descent to the lowest level, she signaled to Gavin to still keep his distance, even if she should fall again.
“It’s a nullifying enchantment spell,” she uttered with a sigh and a growl, seemingly giving up whatever internal fight was going on within her head. “The runes on the wall. You wanted to know what they were, right? Now you have at least something worthy of wiping away when you leave.”
Mariah wasn’t the type to yield so easily, but at this point, if Aria wanted something, she would get her way. For now. If anything and this went poorly down the long run, then Mariah just had another round of ammunition to shut her up in the future. However, Aria pushed and would continue to do so. That much Mariah knew. It wasn’t as if Gavin had given Mariah any real reason to doubt him thus far, either. Besides, it would be an interesting turn of events now, to see if he was really serious about that.

Gavin stopped a couple steps away as she worked to push herself up. He didn't try to help, knowing the reaction that would come. It was more than evident her feelings on him being remotely close in such moments. So there he waited as she moved. He could only shrug when she made a comment about his nobility. "Who really knows. Maybe it's just the years and experiences drilled into me. The Force only knows."
He remained where he was as she continued forward when she got to her feet, allowing her to move a fair distance away before he'd attempt to follow. What came as a surprise though was the fact she didn't tell him to leave a second time but instead told him just what the runes where. And now it all made further sense. Aria had spoken of Mariah's goal of unmasking her People's artifacts and it was easy enough to know this stone was one of them. And if it contained great power, sealing it in a chamber with spells and magic that could hide it was the only logical step. In the end, he should have put two and two together earlier.
Stopping once more, he gave a quiet sigh. "It seems I do." It was at that moment that Mariah confirmed she wished for him to remove this from his memory. And because it was an offer, he would make good on it. Perhaps that was why she had changed her mind on his leaving, having some sense of certainty in his character that he would keep to his word.

The Force only knows. A thought that struck Mariah more than she showed. He wanted to come here and surprise her, then managed to finally track her down here of all places. What more, he wasn’t demanding answers, and even offering to rid himself of the knowledge later. It was a situation she couldn’t begin grasping. Why any of this came to pass, only the Force knew. Still, she had started down this path already, so why the hell stop there.
“The interesting development of the spell is that they’re powered by the very thing that they protect. A constant cycle that never stops and never dies. Generations can pass, and no one will ever know what is sitting right below their feet,” she continued, pushing her luck by adequately offering an answer to his earlier question. She had already started down this path, and if he was serious about his offer, she wanted to know. “However, if you remove it from its place, the runes disappear, and this place appears like some other tomb or man-made chamber. I would offer a demonstration, but there are a few setbacks…”
Mariah finally made it all the way down to the lowest level before positioning herself to stay hoisted up by leaning on the pedestal. If anyone else had done such a thing, Mariah would have forcibly removed their head from their shoulders for defiling such a sacred object in this chamber. She was desperate, though, as to not show any more weakness to him than she already had with her tumble. The issue came by being in such close proximity to what remained fixed upon the pedestal, though. Its essence felt like sheer light and harmony radiating, which in turn created a Force-awful dissonance that tore at Mariah’s soul like organic matter being thrust into a ship’s running engine. That much, she couldn’t hide with a pained wince that tore her momentary crimson gaze away from Gavin. Setback number one, this was as close to the damned thing that Mariah could even get. Typically a curse now turned a blessing.

Gavin listened to her explanation as she continued on, not once speaking to interrupt her. It was an interesting spell, to say the least. An endless powerful artifact powering the very spells put in place to protect it. In some cases, one could only wonder how that worked, curious to the thought since it was what powered it, how it was able to remain hidden. Others would argue that it worked in a contained closed loop. The reality didn't matter to Gavin, however. It worked and that was all that mattered in the end.
It was a few moments after Mariah had reached the pedestal that Gavin reached the bottom of the steps. He made sure to stay a good five feet away as he reached the wall and leaned up against it and crossed his arms, his eyes fixed upon Mariah and the stone that rested in front of her. "Unending, huh? That's quite the artifact if its power can exist and be used to such lengths for so long. Even the most powerful of artifacts usually remain inert for decades or centuries at a time." It was then she mentioned a demonstration that couldn't happen. It made him all the more curious, though he expected such a powerful artifact carrying possible downsides in its use or even being held. "Setbacks? I can guess artifacts with great power having them. Still, I don't need a demonstration, especially if its capable of causing problems for you or even this place."

Following Gavin with her eyes, Mariah remained fixed where she stood. The longer she stood there, though, the worse off she became. Just as they had earlier, the runes flickered alight with Gavin's presence. However, everything seemed to glow with a blinding light as Mariah felt her soul being torn asunder. Even just looking at her, she appeared as though she held a great weight a small thing like her couldn’t hold, even with assistance from the Force. Despite that strained expression, though, she stood as strong as one could under that kind of pressure.
With his quip about the artifact, Mariah huffed out a strained laugh. “Do you forget where you stand, Phoenix?”
The Meditative Canyon was a nexus point, a vergence in the Force. One of the strongest reasons she wanted to face Gavin down again here wasn't just about home-field advantage. It was about being able to utilize her environment to push herself past typical breaking points. What many didn’t know, even those of the Dark Jedi, was that Mariah commonly spent her time in the canyon. It wasn’t just to search out this chamber, either, but to meditate within it and soak in the heavy essence of the Force for as long as she could manage. Eventually, she had hoped to achieve a connection with it, thus using the concentrated amounts of the Force like her own power.
For the artifact, though, it’s very existence was drawn to pull in the Force and be a host for such concentrated amounts of its essence. To be placed with this vergence inevitably powered it, which led to another quirk about the ‘nullifying’ spell Mariah had mentioned. “The runes only work one way, similar to a one-way mirror. Those looking in won’t see anything more than a mirror of what they know this place to be. But those on the inside looking out...” The nexus powered the shard, which then funneled that power through the pedestal, and thus, fed the runes the high amount of Force energy that they needed to remain active. With the runes hiding the shard, it continuously drank in the vergence in an endless cycle to feed its own secrecy. So long as the vergence remained, so would this secret.
Mariah breathed out a shaken breath, no longer able to withstand the sheer amount of light-side energy that washed over her. However, as she stepped away from it -- and closer to Gavin -- she stumbled again, catching herself on a knee as to stay as much upright as she could. At this rate, what was the point anyway? If he was to rid himself of all of this knowledge later, then witnessing her momentary weakness, too, would fade.
Nonetheless, his shrugged answer about not needing a demonstration seemed pitiful now, for a man who had picked for answers about this place earlier. In a usual situation, Mariah would have taken it as a boon, but at this point, she refused to allow Gavin to shirk away from the understanding he sought.
“At the very least, humor me, Phoenix. Go on and try to remove the damned thing from its pedestal.”
It was a sheer concentration of light-side energy. Any darksider would wither away at such an outpouring of energy. At the very least, it would paralyze them as the light would attempt to chase away every shadow of darkness that resided in someone’s soul. Like a kyber crystal that fought against bleeding, visions of light, serenity, and harmony would overwhelm someone, except that this particular stone seemed to be the heart every kyber crystal attuned to every Jedi over the course of the past eternity. Those weakly following the darkside could swiftly shift their belief in the Force by simply being near it. For someone like Mariah, though, it was closer to having her soul ripped from her body entirely. Needless to say, she was curious as to what would happen if Gavin took up the challenge. If anything, she just wanted to see how badly he would suffer or if his very fate would shift at this moment in time. Maybe then, he wouldn't become her problem anymore, and she could dump him on the backwater planet Felucia to live out the rest of his days as a noble Jedi.

As Gavin fixed himself against the wall, still oblivious to the glowing runes around him, his eyes locked onto hers. It didn't take much to see the strain she was under, despite how strong she tried to appear. Was she still feeling the effects of the possession? Or perhaps it was the drawback she was talking about? If it was the latter, only more questions arose. Did holding it drain and weaken the wielder as it built up more power for whatever it could do? He had felt the light radiating off of it, but couldn't put together the effects that particular power and aura had on those that resided within the dark.
Out of respect for her, Gavin merely let his eyes fall, watching her as she started to collapse again. It was a tough battle, refusing to aid her in any way. After all, after there battle a few months prior, he had healed her enough to keep moving, even against her wishes. To deny something as simple as helping her up was surprisingly an even worse task. Still, he remained where he was as she stood once more. What came next was a greater surprise. His eyes focused as he replayed the words in his head. She wanted him to take the stone? What was it about the artifact that made Mariah tell him to take it? For as little desire as she had in wanting to convey any secrets, she was much quicker to make this request. Perhaps she wanted him to suffer under the effects of the stone if only to prove a point or find some form of satisfaction.
Taking a deep breath, he gave her a nod. "Very well."
Moving around her, he made his way in front of the pedestal. Standing not even at arm's length, he could truly feel it now, the essence of light within it. He could already feel the conflict within him as Vannihr and Coretha reacted to its presence. But he stood strong before it, not letting it phase him. He glanced back at Mariah for a final confirmation before taking another breath. "Here we go." Lifting his gloved hand, he reached out, letting his fingers wrap around it. At that moment, the light intensified through his being as the power of the stone poured into him.
Gavin's mind seemed to lose itself in the power of the stone as it fought the darkness in him. For the same as healing or bleeding lightsaber crystals, so too did it try to fight his darkness and pull him into the light completely. It worked to purge it from him or break him down to nothing if the darkness within was too great. His body tensed under the strain as he sought to grasp the energy flowing through him so as to not be consumed by it.
~Memories of the past seemed to play out before him, though no the ones he remembered. He saw the life he could have lived had he remained in the warmth of the light. His return to the Jedi after his initial defeat of his master. Being accepted and pardoned for the act of killing a man who resided as a Jedi master. From there, growing with the Jedi, eventually becoming a master, himself, and sitting on the council. Eventually creating a family.
However, with it came questions. Who was he? Why did he heal so quickly and live so long? Why did others age as he remained the same? His path never leading him to his brother and the discovery of his heritage. But, with time, his faith in the Force guiding him forward, forgetting the questions and carrying on until death one day took him.
It wasn't the only memory that took its course. Almost like a time split, he saw another path running parallel to his Jedi path. He still departed the Jedi after defeating his master, eventually finding the Grey Jedi. But he continued to fight for the light. This path caused him to attempt the path of the other order he secretly served but ended up walking away from. But he still met Jade and upon the wedding night, chose to leave his warrior way behind him and live a peaceful life within the forest of his home.~
~As he saw these things, the war of his heart began. It had been the thought for so long of walking away from this life as a warrior, wondering what his life would have been had he let go and stayed with Jade. The stone sought to pull that thought from him, to egg him forward to either rejoining the Jedi or letting go and finding peace in living a normal life. But, he had come to terms with that reality sometime before. And despite how tempting it was, especially under this influence, he pushed past it. This was the path he walked, the road Jade had seen him taking. It was why she never elected to tell him of his future. He needed to take this journey and end up here. So he pushed and pushed, his strength versus the light of the stone. It wasn't an easy task, even for him, a man who had sought balance within himself, some much so that his mind existed in three parts.
With time, he broke through the light in one brilliant flash. When he opened his eyes, he was within the inner world he crafted for himself, the place where the others resided. As soon as his eyes opened, he had to squint them as the light around him was so bright. to his left stood Coretha, the golden radiant glow brighter than he had ever seen. Vannihr was nowhere, unable to bear the presence of so great a light alone. As he watched her, he felt her power growing. What was more was the fact that despite them remaining separate,, he felt her connecting with him, the contact he had with the stone, pulling her power in and amplifying it.
"I can feel it. The power of the stone. The light is amazing, unlike anything I've felt before. With it, we could become so much more, fight with a light that none could rival. Imagine the possibilities, the people we could help. If we merge, it'll be so." She then reached out her hand to him.
Gavin looked at it and shook his head. "No, Coretha. Remember what we have fought for, the balance we sought to create. Light cannot exist without darkness. To dive into such power would eventually consume me, us. Even more, the power this stone grants us would twist our minds and eventually lead us down a darker path as we fought to protect so many. And, in time, such immense power would burn us from the inside out. Do not let yourself fall to such temptation. Power was been earned through time and effort and never should we lose sight of the balance, less it destroy us."
After a moment, the angelic woman seemed to twitch, as if fighting off heavy pain. It was another few moments before she let her arm and head drop, the power within her slowly lessening and stabilizing. "You are right. We can't it destroy what we've worked for. That power, that hope of what it can give us is too much. I cannot let go of that power so long as you are holding the stone, but I can control it with your help. It connects us as if we merge, so give me your strength and I will lend you mind so to tame it."
"Gavin gave a smile and a nod as he allowed for the connection to complete itself and the merger of the power to take place.~
The grunts escaped Gavin's throat for several grueling minutes before Mariah as the inner struggle took place. At one point, he fell to his knees under the surging energy within him. Two minutes, five minutes, ten minutes, he couldn't tell as time ticked on in what seemed to be an agonizing eternity, though it was only a couple minutes at best. As those last seconds ticked off, there came a calming wave that emitted from him the moment he Coretha merged within his mind. The grunts lessened to nothing as heavy breaths became shallow.
Opening his eyes, he saw himself on the ground. Pushing himself up, something pierced his mind. As the light was tamed and he could see through it, something came into view, like a splinter in his mind. Dark and malicious, it called out to him as the light that now filled him reached out to it. Curious, he let his mind reach out to it, to establish the connection the two sought. As he did, he looked around the chamber, now standing fully. Something was off. Though similar, the room now seemed different though he couldn't truly place it. He thought it a trick of his mind until he noticed that Mariah was gone and what stood in place of the pedestal was a twisting spire about seven feet tall. In the center of it was a hollowed-out point where something could rest, though nothing was there. When he looked at his hand, the stone he held seemed to shift slightly in color and shape.
The surprise made him blink as he took a couple of steps back. But when his eyes opened, the spire was gone, and Mariah was standing there watching him. He glanced back down at the stone again and it looked just as it had when he took it. Looking back to her, he let out a few heavy breaths, his eyes no longer an ice blue but a shimmering gold. "Well...that was certainly a rush."

Mariah issued the challenge haphazardly, for the moment that Gavin moved around her to take it, she felt an underlying weight within her like a rock sunk in her stomach. To allow someone outside her people to handle this powerful yet delicate artifact was blasphemous. As he reached out for it, it was as though she could hear the generations of her ancestors cry out in protest and agony over her decision. Still, she refused to back down now, and the moment his fingers pressed against the stone, Mariah sucked in a sharp breath of air.
Unbeknownst to Gavin, the moment he removed the stone from its resting place, there was a shockwave of pure Lightside energy that pulsed throughout the chamber with the stone at its epicenter. Mariah, who was already down to a knee, fell under the weight as though her soul was nearly shredded away from the impact. The wave may have lasted a mere second, but Mariah was out for several. The moment she came to, she groaned groggily and, with the swift remembrance of what had just taken place, pushed herself back up to her feet with haste. Those crimson orbs immediately snapped over towards Gavin, who stood statuesque with the crystal in hand. Mariah breathed in a panicked breath as she glanced around the chambers, and one by one, those runes that kept this artifact sealed and hidden started to fade away.
“No…”
If Gavin didn’t snap out of this fast, the whole of Ambria would know of this crystal’s existence. Although it was settled within a Nexus of the Force, a keen eye or powerful Force user would soon be able to sense the pinprick of the Force’s surging Lightside energy shining from this place. However, what was more concerning was how long he was under this spell. Most succumbed in a matter of seconds, yet he still seemed enchanted with whatever vision it pushed upon him.
“Phoenix, snap out of it!” she snarled.
As if on command, he did. The moment she called out his name, he blinked and took those few steps back. Mariah revealed the faintest of shock in her expression with the widening of her eyes as they met his -- those gold orbs peering back at her. She was quick to shake off the surprise in her expression, especially considering his casual word choice.
“A rush…?” she questioned harshly before another dying rune on the wall pressed her towards the more urgent matter at hand. “Kriff. Phoenix, put it back… now!”
Lunging towards him, she reached out to grasp his hand with hers, to forcibly make him return the crystal back to its pedestal. However, the moment that her hand touched his skin, touched the crystal, it felt like touching the center of a star. Burning, singing away at her physical body just as much her spiritual one. She hissed with a quick inhale and was forced to take a step back. Without another option open to her, she reached down for the saber affixed to her belt and prepared to ignite it. She didn’t have time to register any of the obvious questions -- Would he try to forcibly steal this artifact now that he felt its power? Why was he under its vision for so long? Was he still sane enough to listen to her, or would he force her hand to keep this crystal a secret? -- nor could she, not until this artifact was truly safe once more.

Though her voice calling him back helped to guide him, he never actually heard it. After he spoke, he saw something he never expected to see, a focused and hardened woman in a bit of a panic. He heard the words spoken, but before he could even react, she already reached out to his hand, though the result was her being forced back and in pain.
That was all it took to see the severity of taking the stone from its resting place. Quickly, yet calmly, he replaced the stone and took a few steps back. After a second or two, he moved over to the woman, though noticed the runes and their faded nature. Inwardly, he cursed himself for taking it, despite being told to. She had explained what would happen if they were removed, but she issued that small challenge, wanted him to take it and see what it was all about. For that, this situation came at no real fault of his own, one he had to acknowledge, less he habor some form of guilt over what transpired.
Kneeling down to her, his eyes focused on her as the golden glow faded, returning the icy blue gaze. "Are you alright?" Upon seeing that she was alright, he gave a sigh and shook his head before looking at him as if nothing had happened to either of them. "Hey, you were the one who told me to take it, even after telling me what would happen to the runes."

It was an immediate, recognizable reaction. The moment that Gavin placed the crystal back into its resting place, the pedestal shimmered with a soft light. A gentle pulse of Lightside energy warmed the chamber. The runes that had faded slowly resurged back to life.
Mariah inhaled sharply as she turned to look over the status of the chamber. Once she had assessed that all had returned to normal, she was then able to focus on the other matters at hand. Although she released her hand from her saber, she was still far from pacified from the act she just witnessed. With Gavin closing the distance to ensure her own safety, she used that to his disadvantage as she sent a push through the Force to slam him against the wall behind him.
“Who are you?”
Her question came with a demanding ferocity, it was nearly evident in her harsh tones that he was to answer or die. Mariah even followed up by closing the gap between them in hopes to keep him pinned against the wall. She hadn’t missed the fading of those golden orbs back to the piercing blue she was familiar with. She hadn’t even missed the deflection of fault back onto her for what had just transpired. None of that mattered now, though. As far as Mariah was concerned, he had revealed a phenomena that shouldn’t have been possible, and what more, exuded a sense of control that had no viable explanation.
“What did you experience while holding that crystal, Phoenix? How the hell are you still even standing here?”

Gavin could barely get a word out before suddenly finding himself being slammed against the wall, the runes surrounding him pulsing with new life due to his contact with it. He grunted under the pressure as he shook his head, his eyes then turned to look at her, the sharpness within them returning. He didn't know what was happening but knew to keep his mind open. Ever since he first stepped foot within this chamber, he had been dancing on glass. And with her currently panicked mindset, it was best to play it cool.
Still, the questions that came confused him. Who was he? What did he experience? He couldn't make out just what she was asking. She knew of these artifacts and what would transpire when someone held them, but her words weren't as clear as she might have hoped. At least, not in a way that would allow him to answer properly. Taking a deep breath, his head lowered as he looked at her despite the pressure she continued to press against him.
"What do you mean who am I? And why wouldn't I still be standing here? If you want answers, you are going to have to be a bit more elaborate as to what you are looking for." Even against the harshness of her tones, he spoke calmly and without a demand. The last thing he wanted to do at this moment was cause her to break, if just for a moment. He needed to make it clear he wasn;t a threat to her, this room, nor the artifact and would answer the questions.

The runes created a wave around Gavin’s body the moment that his body was slammed against the wall. In her current state, Mariah easily looked past it, her eyes locked upon Gavin as though he was a trespassing presence in need of being removed, in some fashion or another. She pressed onward, her hand grasping onto the cloak that shrouded Gavin’s body. His questions rang with an eerie calm, the same kind of calm that he shouldn’t have exuded after handling such an artifact. It only reinforced that sense of angered urgency in the small crimson-haired woman as she kept him pinned between her and the wall.
“The moment that you touched that crystal, it would have pumped the purest form of Lightside energy this side of the Veil has ever known,” she growled low, her crimson eyes locked upon his blue. “It's enough to make even the strongest and most resilient man crumble to tears and turn from the ‘error of his ways’... to seek redemption among the Lightsiders of the galaxy... filling them with delusions of grandeur... with visions of using its power to rid the galaxy of the Darkside, and you…”
Her snarled words had reached a crescendo before they trailed off abruptly. 'A rush.' That was how he described it. There was only one group who could have exuded such control after handling its presence, and as far as Mariah knew, they were like the rest of her people. Dead and gone. Mariah could only look at Gavin as though he was an impossibility within the galaxy as she knew it. She breathed in deep, seemingly unrelenting to her assault, but with her exhale, she released him and took a step away from him, keeping her back turned to him, but her body still poised between him and the artifact.
“What happened when you took it, Phoenix?” she asked again, controlling her tones now to a more monotonous drone. “What visions did you see?”

He stayed calm as he stood his ground, though didn't work to push back. It was a careful game of giving and take, one that seemed to be working as she continued on, giving more of an explanation as to what was expected to transpire from any who attempted to wield the artifact. The pieces fell into place one after another as he listened. It truly was a mass amount of light being poured into him. He was only lucky that Coretha still was able to listen and see the truth of its power. If they hadn't spent years working through the conflict within him, then he would have been overpowered within seconds, no longer the person she saw. But it was his experiences and his beliefs that helped him focus the power and calm the essence of light within him.
Taking a deep breath, he nodded. He was about to speak when suddenly, she let go of the power that bound him to the wall, took a step away and turned around. It was then her own voice found a calm as she asked her question again, this time with more detail and expectation. However, there was a slight bit of uncertainty as to what she meant. But for the way she asked, it seemed as if there was one specific detail she hoped resided in what he saw. Still, he would answer her with all that transpired.
Turning his eyes to the stone, he let that sensation run through his mind again as he spoke. "That is typically where the greatest flaw of man exists. No matter who you are, power is difficult to let go of when it is in one's grasp. No matter how much one claims they don't seek power, it all changes when presented with it. For dark means or to right wrongs, the person can barely keep from being overshadowed by it. It takes so much to understand respect for that level of power and to truly let go of it when its right there. That is but one of the many steps in order to endure such power and not crumble." He then moved up beside her, turning to her fully as a sign his attention was on her and not the artifact, further showing the hold it didn't have over him. "What I saw when I took hold of it was the lives I could have lived had I chosen a path of light, never leaving the Jedi or even staying home after getting married. Yet, somehow, each one of them seemed to falter after a while, as if a realization had reached that none of those lines could have come to fruition. Then came seeing the essence of light within me taking in the power. Talking with it, seeking to calm it and help it to let go with the aid of my experiences and understanding. Then, as the light was tamed, there was...something else." He gaze turned upward as he recalled what he saw and felt. "Amidst the light was a speck of darkness, a darkness that called out, one the light began to reach for. I allowed the two to meet. When I did, this room shifted slightly. You were gone, the pedestal had changed and the stone was black."He then looked back at her with a smirk and cocked head. "Then in the blink of an eye, I was here once more with you yelling at me like normal."

It took Mariah all she had not to lash back out at Gavin as he continued this philosophical discussion about what happens when mortals are presented with power. It was all the same song and tune, like one of those Force-awful catchy cantina tunes that one had finally ridden from their mind, only to immediately be reminded of it so that it would torment the silence of one’s thoughts for next eternity. The Sith wanted domination and power, but so did the Jedi. To rid the Darkside of the galaxy was nested in that same basket. Power to dominate. To rid something through even force, if necessary. They were one and the same. That was the dangers of this artifact, the dangers of those like it. They became a means to power for those who dared get too close.
Her thoughts were snapped back to the present, though, with the sound of shuffling. Gavin approached her, and in turn, Mariah prepared to place herself once more between him and the crystal. When she turned to face him, however, even she couldn’t dispute that his attention wasn’t drawn upon the crystal, but her. As he began to offer her an explanation of what he saw, the tension which rose within her subsided, albeit gradually and never wholly. The more he explained, the more she believed it some kind of fluke. That was until he mentioned that ‘something else’, the reason her tension never fully left her muscles.
“You saw it... It guided you to its brethren...”
She uttered those words through gritted teeth of disbelief. Her eyes may have narrowed upon him, but she made no other move against him. It was only then that she realized that it wasn’t some fluke; Gavin had somehow miraculously managed to tune himself to the crystal’s energy, without being overcome with it. It had guided him to the resting place of the other stone, its counterbalance in the universe. The shifting of the room, the changing of the pedestal. She had only a single explanation for who he was and his ability to manage this, and it was one she didn’t like. There wasn’t a better explanation than it, though, despite the thousands of holes she could riddle through this newest theory in a heartbeat. Her mind couldn’t wrap itself around any other answer, though. Not like she had the time before Gavin made that final quip.
“You’re lucky that’s all you came back to, Phoenix,” Mariah snarled with a roll of her eyes. “You don’t understand how bizarre this whole scenario is.”
Bizzare was an understatement. Her eyes turned from Gavin back to the stone upon the pedestal. Although she remained silent for a few moments, it was easy to see that she had submerged herself deep in thought over the next steps to take. The next questions to ask. The next minutes… hours… days and what they would hold for not only her now but for him as well. The biggest concern, though, was that of the missing stone on Korriban. She had confirmed that this one remained untouched, and Gavin had the key to the status of the other. From what she could decipher, it also remained safe in its resting place, but she couldn’t guarantee how long, not when there was an unidentified thief who now knew of these crystal’s existence. Mariah would need to find it before they did.
“Do you remember what that chamber looked like? Anything that struck you as different from this one here? Any detail, great or small, would be a boon to me.”

As he finished speaking, there seemed to be a bit of silence as she pondered what he had just said. But as he suspected, she had been seeking something in particular in asking about what he saw. However, her chosen words made his head drop. "It's brethren?" For some reason, he couldn't believe that there was another artifact as powerful as this one. Even with the idea of this one being an artifact of the light, that didn't mean that a counterpart existed. Yet, such a reality seemed to be the case. "You mean to tell me that there are two of these artifacts in the galaxy? And not only two, but counterbalancing pieces?"
Artifacts of power were such a puzzle to him. Things that granted wielders great power, a power that usually made people feel like gods or felt justified in committing atrocious acts, even those of the light in some virtuous campaign against the darkness. While his weapons in some aspect could be considered artifacts in time, nothing he crafted would grant anyone such power and even then, they only ever worked to compliment him and him alone. Now he wondered who was it that created these things. Considering all that had been said, it could very well have been Mariah's people. Then again, it was just as possible they had found them and deemed them too dangerous to exist in the sight of the galaxy and hid them, watching over them for generations. Either way, it was a reckless decision, to say the least.
Yet, these thoughts were pushed aside as Mariah first addressed the yelling, then how strange everything was before asking for more details on what he saw. Letting out a slight cocky scoff, he placed a hand on his hip as he closed his eyes. "You're telling me. After all, I'm just the outsider who knows nothing, right?" Setting his gaze upon her, his smirk remained for only a moment more before he turned serious again, ready to give her what she desired. Looking around the room, he tried to remember all he saw, though he hadn't paid enough attention to determine if the runes or even the shape were any different. He did move towards the pedestal, his steps slow as he reached it, expecting Mariah to be right behind him. "There is one detail that sticks out that I can truly say. Instead of a pedestal like this, it was a spire, maybe seven feet tall. It was twisting around itself instead of just straight sides. In the center, about as high as this was a cut out where the stone rested." He then turned back to her, wondering if the detail would provide her any clarity she sought.

Of course, Gavin would be shocked by this new revelation. Two dual pieces of crystals, separated for many reasons -- none of which Mariah wanted to discuss with him at this present point in time. In answer to his question, the crimson-haired woman simply opted to hum in affirmation, lowering her chin as she cast a side-eye towards the stone that rested once more in its place, where it had been for the past several decades -- centuries, even.
The thing about artifacts like these, though, was that the more one knew of it and its origins, the more questions that would appear from all directions. Even Mariah hadn’t all the answers. Perhaps one day, she would have. However, the fate of her kin prevented all of that. It was why she struggled to find this resting place here. All she knew was of their existence and their general location within the galaxy -- vergences within the Force, their source for eternal fuel.
“Ignorance is bliss, Phoenix,” she uttered, then turning to him with a narrowed, critical gaze. “The less you know, the better, for both our sakes. You’re already astounded to find out that there are two out there in the galaxy, so for now, let's keep it that way.”
Oh, there were more, which could be easily implied based on her response. Based on Gavin’s reaction, she had a feeling that revealing it bluntly -- with the added bonus that one was already stolen from its pedestal -- was far from a great idea, though. At least for the time being. Time was of the essence anyway, and she would need to report back to the Temple before anyone realized she was missing. Gavin now had knowledge, knowledge that she needed. To irk her even further, he was now useful to her beyond what she would ever voice aloud.
“A pedestal spire with the channeling chamber carved within…” Mariah bit thoughtfully on her bottom lip as she turned to the pedestal before her, envisioning the revealed one in Gavin’s visions. “I’m unfamiliar with the architecture, but I have texts in my chambers that might help lead me to where its counterpart was locked away.”
Now came the fun part. Mariah braced herself for the questions to come and even the refusal of his assistance. She had no other option before her, though, and was prepared for a barrage of his uncertainties. Although she had the means to contain it outside of this chamber, there was only one here who could even get close to it. Her hands were tied.
“First, we need to get this stone safely back to the Temple, undetected…”
‘We’. Mariah nearly shuddered at the use of that word. It weighed heavily on her tongue, but as difficult as it was to succumb to such a simple word, the consequences of leaving it here, exposed, weighed as heavily as the galaxy upon her shoulders. The lesser of two evils was clearer than the Light Side that poured from the crystal.

The moment that Mariah spoke of him not needing to know, his eyes sharpened. Part of him desired to know, to demand answers from her. Somewhere deep down, he felt that the secrets she held needed to be explained to him. But that brought about a new question. Why did he feel the need to know? Sure, he had his opinions about such artifacts, but the feeling of having to know another's secret confused him. It was almost like a long-hidden duty that resided within him had been sparked with this revelation.
And what little she said in that first line gave way to many other suspicions. The idea of things being kept as they are in knowing two stones existed hinted at something else. Perhaps there weren't just two. Or maybe it was in reference just to what all could be achieved with them. Even still, it could have been an indication of why there were two. Yet, for all his feelings and questions, he merely nodded. "Very well. I will not pry. You have already trusted me with a great deal."
He stepped back from the pedestal as she stepped forward, trying to envision it. He simply watched her for a moment as she worked out the thoughts in her head, wondering if she knew of the other's location. The seconds passed, now to the point that he was ready to step up, hoping that somehow he could share what he saw if it meant helping her. Yet, before he could, she spoke of not knowing the architecture though had a means of figuring it out. If she had a mind of what it was, she wouldn't need his assistance in further understanding.
It was surprising, though, that for wanting to keep as much hidden as possible still, she was still openly providing information. The question was why? Was she just thinking to herself aloud, forgetting he was there? Or did she think it unimportant information to anyone but her? A dangerous thought considering he knew what to look for. If he wished to overpower her and seek this knowledge for himself, he could. That was unless it was written in languages he didn't know and protected in ways he couldn't get past. Not that it mattered aside from what it could be had it been anyone else.
But it was just him and she was allowing some trust to exist, a trust he wasn't about to betray. Even if these stones did fight him and attempted to alter his reasoning, he would do everything in his power to remain himself and worthy of that trust. A trust she was further put in him when she spoke of them instead of her. Looking back to the stone. It didn't take a genius to figure out what was to happen next. In her attempt to force the stone back, it caused her pain. But that wasn't to be said of him. One question did exist, though. "So, I guess you are trusting me to carry it for you, then? Alright, but how? As you said, without these runes to keep it hidden and once it moves outside of the nexus of the canyon, it will be easily felt by all. How do you intend for it to be kept hidden?"

Trust. Was that what this was? She hadn’t the desire to fight with him, though. It was an unnecessary battle that would take up too much time to fight. In her eyes, this was a necessity. Survival. The texts being in her chambers were nothing short of bait. If he one day decided to go snooping about in her room, he would be quicker caught by the guards before breaching the door. When they were finished here, at that, there would be a far more precious mark hiding away in that room, something he would have known about anyway, as he would soon be an accomplice in securing it.
Anything more that was revealed to him was done under a different guise, appointed by a different Shadows. The thought frustrated her, the momentary memory of nothingness with the only thing cutting through the black was muffled voices from the surface. At the very least, he wasn’t about to pry, and despite bracing for the myriad of questions to cut through the air, they didn’t come. A relief and a victory, but they weren’t something to be celebrated yet.
Gavin had poised an excellent question. Although she had come here vastly under armed for retrieving the crystal, that wasn’t her intention until this very moment. At first, this mission was to locate it. Now, it was an extraction. With a thoughtful hum, Mariah looked away from Gavin and the crystal and turned her attention towards the runes that glowed with an arcane light upon the walls. There, her answer lied. It was mere seconds in silence before she could prove that that critical gaze of hers wasn’t just for show. There was always a solution. This room proved that there was a solution to masking the power of that stone. All she needed was to replicate it.
Turning back to Gavin, she ushered, “Remove your cloak and then prepare yourself mentally for the next steps. You only held that crystal for a mere moment, but the trek back to the Temple will take some time. When we reach the hangars, I can’t have you rushing off to your ship to flee the planet in a momentary lapse of judgment.”
She spoke critically, as though she believed it to be a possibility; however, whether it was distrust in Gavin or simply an understanding of the crystal's power remained unknown. Once her unspoken warning had been issued, though, Mariah settled herself at the base of the steps, pulling out the athames that rested upon her belt. She grimaced inwardly at the touch of metal against her palm. Of all her weaponry she discussed with Gavin all those moons ago, she had kept these a secret and for a reason. Even during their duel, she had opted to keep them away from the bloodshed. Was it from a sudden misguided trust? Not trust, she affirmed with an inward scowl. After her lessons under Ifrit’s tutelage, she was about to put her knowledge and skills to the test, to fulfill her duty.
Nothing more. Nothing less.

Once again, Gavin remained silent, watching the woman as she fixed her gaze to the walls. Did she have a plan? was she capable of crafting a means of removing the stone? He still knew so little of her people and what they could do and the tasks that were required to cast the runes that decorated the wall. If anyone were to have a solution, it existed only with her.
And so it seemed to be the case when she looked back to him and requested his cloak. He didn't know just she had planned but wasn't going to question her. As he removed his cloak and gloves, she gave him further instructions to prepare himself to hold the crystal for a much longer span of time. Part of him wanted to resist, a slight aspect of his cocky nature trying to peek through. But his logically and understanding mind was more than enough to brush it away. She was right. He may have tamed the light for that moment, but that was merely a point of his strength and will overpower the power of the crystal. Long term exposure could be more than capable of seeping its way into him to a point he couldn't resist. Caution was the wisest decision at the moment.
Handing her his cloak, he nodded as he stepped away and sat down by the stairs. Taking a few calming breaths, he closed his eyes and began to meditate. His mind seeking to speak with Coretha once more so to enmsure that she was preparing as well, not knowing what was to come.

Mariah hummed quietly to herself as Gavin silently removed his cloak and handed it over to her. Although the intensity of her crimson eyes never parted from him, she took hold of the dark cloth with her free hand and brought it down to drape across her lap. He at least appeared to heed her instructions without question and, in an even surprising shocker, rid himself of that prior cockiness he once exuded. The crimson-haired woman didn’t start her work at first, though, her eyes simply following along with his movements until he settled himself down for meditation. It was only then that it all clicked, how serious he was taking this.Just as seriously as her.Mariah exhaled as she thought about that word briefly again. Trust. With his eyes closed and his mind falling deeper into his meditations, she openly began to wear that scowl. This was what her sister was up to all along, wasn’t it? At least, with her power dwindled to nothing from her earlier recklessness, Mariah’s mind remained silent to everything but only her thoughts. He was a tool, and a useful one. That was it.He was only a tool.Mariah repeated it over and over in her head as if trying to rid away some other belief that had begun to form. However, she couldn’t dwell on it for too long. Time was short. Gavin was already preparing himself for the task at hand. Now, Mariah needed to do the same. With a deep breath, Mariah closed her eyes briefly, a moment of meditation for herself, before her eyes snapped open to look down at his cloak.Without another moment to spare, Mariah began her work. Whipping the cloak on the floor, she shifted her weight to slide off the stair and to her knees upon the lowest level. The gentle clatter of metal signaled the athames haphazardly finding their resting place beside her. The crimson-haired woman carefully spread her hands over the fabric to smoothen out any creases so that, while the outside would remain the same to the naked eye, the inside of the cloak would be the canvas for this spell -- just like the inner walls of this chamber.Mariah glanced up at the walls, finding the beginning of runes’ pattern before she shuffled through each of the six knives that rested beside her. It took Mariah a brief second between each one to decipher the cryptic symbol carved on the flat of the blade. There were two she would need to work in tandem here. At last, upon finding them, Mariah sat back upon her feet before glancing over at Gavin. With his eyes still closed, he was still deep in meditation -- a boon in her eyes for what she was about to do. With a deep exhale, Mariah closed her eyes and began channeling her essence into the blades, repeating over and over:“Midwan iv Natura ir Mirtis, Nu reiklauti tauz…” She whispered the spell under her breath like a mantra until her spell took hold. With each additional attempt at the spell, it was as though she could hear her whispered voice a thousandfold, summoning the blades to life. However, it wasn’t until the fourth summoning that the symbols turned alight with their respective glow -- one a deep copper with an eerie black core, and the other a shimmering yellow with a brilliant white core. Mariah could feel the two awakened -- two auras resting within her hands, both different yet connected on a deeper level than she could comprehend. What more, she could sense their thirst for something more than just her essence which stirred them awake.Mariah opened her eyes to look down upon the athames, and at that moment, Gavin was nothing more than another trivial matter within the background. Whether he had stirred to witness her workings or remained in his meditations mattered little to her, so long as he was ready for his part in all of this. With the blades wielded side-by-side in her right hand, she held out her left and poised the sharpened edges upon her palm.“Nu reiklauti tauz Daboti tave uzdar iv tave Hadzuska Mazo ekrihyr zhol buti” Their answer came as nothing more than a sensation, their acceptance of her offering. Inhaling deep, Mariah drew the sharpened edges against her palm, shredding skin away to surface that which they sought -- blood. The pain, Mariah expected, was to be the usual discomfort that would come from such a wound; however, awakening the blades drew something more than Mariah had anticipated. Her magicks channeled through those blades, creating a visual effect in the crimson pool with shimmering trails of black and white swirling with pearlescent light among the red. Mariah blinked, inhaling, uncertain -- for once in her life, struck still in awe. Had she at last accomplished that which had evaded her for all these years? The gentle patter of her blood dripping onto the cloth, though, stirred her back to the task at hand. Without losing another moment to her senseless awe and idling, she began with haste to write those same runic symbols that riddled the walls with her index finger. With each symbol she drew, the blood dissipated into nothing, leaving only the runic magicks to glisten upon the cloth. The spell, it seemed, had worked, but only time and her finished workings would tell.

*Gavin dove deeper into his mind, shutting himself off from the outside world. Further and further he went through the darkness before the sudden flash that brought him to that inner world of his mind. Taking a deep breath, he looked to his right as Coretha was already standing there. He simply watched her for a moment as she took a few hesitant steps forward, her footfalls not even causing the smallest ripple over the water. He gave a nod, confirming that which she questioned, to which she sighed.
"Are you sure about this, Gavin? To hold onto it for even several minutes may be too long, even for you. Can we truly withstand such a power flowing through us? You are just as aware as I am that even the strongest fall when subjected to something over time. Can we really trust in our own strength to not fall to its corruption?"
She brought her hands together as one did when uncertainty befell them. He understood her concern well, as well as the differences between them. She was that fragment of his mind that represented the light. A powerful force for justice. Unlike the Jedi who preferred non-violence and to find peace through the light, Coretha embodied the essence of preserving peace and prosperity through whatever means necessary. After all, she had taken shape after Vannihr came into existence solely to combat the darkness he represented, completely disrupting the balance within Gavin. So she was far more susceptible to the artifact's influence than most. If his mind wasn't divided as it was, or at least, he hadn't been able to fully tame these entities and understand himself, he would not have been able to endure such power.
Stepping up to her, he placed a hand upon her and gave her a reassuring smile. "Do not fear the crystal's power, Coretha. Respect it, but do not fear it. Let go off the desires that drive you forward and remember the balance. Light and dark must exist together in harmony. Without one of these sides, chaos ensues. Even a world full of light cannot stave off that reality. Dark breeds chaos and hardships, but through these things hope and strength is found in the light. It is what makes us strive to be more than we are. Through only the light, we grow complacent and just the dark we fall to absolute despair." He then placed a hand on her shoulder. "You exist as the light within me, a separate entity born from a trying time. With it comes a different state of mind. But we are all one, unified by the balance we worked so hard to obtain. The goals we have are the same now and the only way we can achieve is through our own power, not a power handed to us that we didn't earn. Remember to let it flow and to let go of desires, only then came we overcome its influence and continue to tame this light, no matter how long we have to bear its burden. I believe in you, so trust in me."
Looking up to him, she smiled with a nod. "I do trust you, Gavin." Suddenly, the world around them seemed to pulse in a way that they hadn't seen and the muffled sounds of an echoing voice resonated around them. "It seems that Mariah has begun her task into ensuring the artifact remains hidden as we go. We shouldn't waste any more time."
Gavin nodded as they both sat down to meditate, connecting themselves and focusing their minds for the coming task.*
The minutes passed by as Mariah worked to enchant his cloak in order to harbor the crystal. All the while, Gavin remained in his meditation, his focus and mental strength growing bit by bit as he communed with the spirit inside, constantly recalling his own lessons and beliefs, hardening his will against the influence of the stone that he was now familiar with.
