...and in silence, Mariah did continue to work on enchanting his cloak. Carefully, the crimson-haired woman ensured that every stroke of her finger across the cloth followed that of the chamber's markings around her. As the minutes passed, she had fallen into a tiring repetition of the symbols, now ingrained in her mind forever.
With the last of the runic writings made within his cloak, Mariah sat back to look over her work. From the hood to the base, she had ensured that these magicks left no holes for the crystal’s power to seep through. Without their fuel, however, the runes only shimmered faintly within the soft lighting of the room, and once her magicks faded from the enchantment, they would be invisible to all.
It was then, though, that the ping of discomfort rang within the palm of her hand as a reminder to the ritual she had performed moments before. Her crimson gaze snapped to eye up Gavin, who still sat in meditation throughout this whole ordeal. She may as well have been alone here, which she saw as a boon to have a few extra quiet moments before their work began. With a quiet sigh, Mariah cupped her right hand under her left and quietly began to chant that basic healing spell that she had first learned under Ifrit’s tutelage. The blood coagulated quickly in response to her summonings, and soon after that, the scabs peeled away by fresh skin. Closing her hand into a fist, Mariah examined her hand closely as she had all other times before. Magicks -- as much as she wouldn’t reveal it aloud, sorcery of this kind was something she believed was far beyond her. She was a Blade, a Protector. Not a Spellweaver. Yet every day, she was discovering more and more that her People’s magicks truly did run through her veins. That much was clear by the cloak which was laid out before her.
She couldn’t be so confident yet, though. Silently, she stood back to her feet, draping Gavin’s cloak over an arm. There was the instinctual impulse to simply toss it upon him and shake him abruptly from his meditations. However, something held her back, and instead, she opted to carefully set it next to him for him to retrieve when he awoke. She knew he would endure a great deal of strain with this task, and all seemingly for her benefit. All he would walk away with the knowledge of this artifact and his life. So what was really in it for him? To sell what little information he had on the black market to any shady underground criminal, or report it to the Sith’ari, to the First Order, to whoever he was truly working for? Only time would tell his true motives, but a backstabbing son of a bantha wasn’t something she hadn’t dealt with before. For now, all that mattered was two things: he was one of a very select few who even had the power to overcome the crystal’s sweet lullaby, and that she had the means to keep it hidden from the other thief who had somehow discovered their existence. The foreseeable future was something she would deal with accordingly, no matter how many tongues she had to cut out or heads removed from their shoulders. In this immediate future, she needed to stay focused. She would need his mind, body, and spirit fully prepared, no matter how long it would take him.
<< Showing mercy isn’t like you… >>
Mariah growled quietly under her breath. Her sister’s power was returning, slowly yet surely, and with it, so was their bond. Despite the weakened connection, she still had to try to force through that little quip. Mariah wouldn’t even bother sending back a retort; she also had more important things to be focusing on. Gavin. She needed to be prepared for the Force to be a cruel Master, the same as it always was. She would need to be prepared to cut him down should he stray from his path. With that reminder, Mariah settled back upon the floor and set Nihilo before her, to meditate upon her own task at hand and that which she sought to accomplish. In answer, the Force wrapped itself around the hilt of her blade, now floating in the air before her. Here, she would reside in the stillness of her own meditations until she could hear Gavin stir, prepared for the most important phase to come.

It wasn't long after Mariah began her meditations with Nihilo that Gavin began to stir quietly. With a deep breath, his eyes then opened. His gaze stayed fixed upon the artifact as it rested on the pedestal, the final line of resolve and will fortifying itself as his eyes locked onto it. It was another few seconds before another breath came from him and he started looking around the room. He watched her for a moment, seeing that she was meditating, focusing her attention on her weapon. It was an odd thing to be doing unless she had already finished whatever task she had in mind for getting the stone out of there.
It was then that he looked down and saw his cloak lying next to him. While it wasn't an actual verification that she had finished her work, he opted to believe it was. This was clearly an important task, one that Mariah wasn't about to waste time with. Standing quietly, he worked to put his cloak on, though he figured the shuffling would be enough to stir the crimson-haired woman. First the cloak, then the gloves, bit by bit it all came back together. He slipped the flute within a pocket that rested inside and was about to zip it up when he stopped. He wanted her to believe he wouldn't run from her, to feel like she wouldn't need to take drastic measures, something she was no preparing for as he thought on it. And there was one way he knew that he could ease her mind, if only slightly.

While the chamber remained quiet, Mariah spent her time meditating and building her resolve as for the possibilities to come. Images of the two reaching the hangar bay played through her mind in an instant. The possibilities of the crystal wrestling control over his body, Gavin attempting to make a break for his ship with this precious artifact in tow. The angry flash of Nihilo coming to life with a violent hum, cutting through light and flesh. Another life, snuffed out, from the result of these things. Gavin had far more experience and training than she did, and with the power of the crystal, only the Force knew what power he could exude. Should this moment in time come to pass, she would need to be quick and act without hesitation. Nihilo, however, seeped resounding wrath and determination through the crimson-haired woman. She, like her blade, would be ready to cut down any who dared to do them wrong.
As expected, the moment that Gavin’s rustling fluttered through the air, Mariah lured herself out of her meditations. Nihilo grew quiet as the hilt gentle sunk back down into the woman’s lap as though it weighed no greater than a feather. Before it could truly settle, Mariah took hold of it and stood back to her feet. Without addressing the man, she affixed her weapon back onto her belt and lifted her hand to summon the athames up from the floor. In a natural phenomenon, they spun slowly in a perfect circle with the blades facing outwards, only ceasing as, one by one, the hilts clattered back into Mariah’s hand.
“Once you’re ready, take the crystal from the pedestal,” Mariah commanded, making note that he had already put his cloak back on. Placing the ritual knives back on her belt. she continued with a brief explanation, “I enchanted your cloak. Keep your hood raised, and keep you and the crystal hidden within it. Your presence will be just as potent as the artifact, so don’t you dare remove your cloak or its hood for any reason. Do I make myself clear, Phoenix?”
All this was to say if her enchantment even worked; however, she dared not show an ounce of doubt. Instead, all she could do was keep walking this rather fine line, where the fate of her People’s artifact was left in the hands of another. The harshness in her commands revealed that she still was unfond and untrusting of what she resorted to, and if one doubted the reasoning behind her sharp words, her hand ever-resting upon the hilt of her saber spoke even louder.

Gavin turned to Mariah as he heard her stand to her feet. It wasn't even a moment later that the athames floated up from the floor to circle her and settled themselves into her hand. He could see the focus and determination within her eyes, ready for the task that lay before them. Something about the scene, the way the blades moved around her, the look in her eye that made his head tilt ever so slightly with the faintest of smiles.
His thoughts were immediately broken by her commands, causing him to divert his attention back to the crystal. This was it, to see just how strong his resolve was and if he was capable of enduring such power for a decent amount of time. He gave a nod as he looked, but didn't move forward. "Understood. First," His hands moved inside of his unzipped cloak, seeking something out. Turning to her, he stepped up and raised his hands, DeepStrike and Blockade held within his grasp. "take these. If for whatever reason I fall to this artifact's influence and need to be stopped, I'll at least be unarmed. And should you think I may attempt to run, surely this will settle your doubts a little bit as you know I would never leave them behind." There were many things about them that were the same. The one that mattered now was the fact they were both warriors and didn't view their weapons as simple tools that could so easily be discarded. They were apart of them and to abandon them was to severe a piece of themselves.
Once she took the weapons from him, he made his way back towards the pedestal and simply gazed at the crystal for a few moments. Taking a deep breath, he finally let his hand raise up, his fingers slowly slipping around its structure as it took hold within his grip. Instantly, he felt the power surge through him once more. He focused himself as the power rushed through him. This time was different from the first. There were no visions, only the power feeding directly through him. The light surged within him, amplifying that part of his being as the golden hue of his eyes returned.
Seconds passed by again, making one wonder what was going through his head. But he eventually turned to Mariah before slipping it inside his pocket. Already could he see the runes that marked the wall come to life within his cloak as the power of the stone began to influence them. With it settled inside, he zipped up the cloak and raised his hood, the shadows just barely hiding the glow of his eyes. With another breath, he gave a nod. "I'm ready."

If there was any way to force Mariah’s hand off of her weapon, it was what Gavin presented her. At first, she only eyed him up critically, as if wondering what exactly it was he was trying to do. Win over her trust? Possibly, although the reason he presented remained a moot point in the crimson-haired warrior’s mind. Unbeknownst to him, the crystal itself was now the most deadly weapon in his armament. Nonetheless, she accepted the two sabers after that split second of uncertainty.
“Your weapons are the last thing I'm worried about, Phoenix.”
Mariah muttered those words under her breath as she affixed his weapons to her belt. The idea that he wouldn’t leave them resolved with a bit more truth than his earlier attempt regarding being unarmed, at least. Still, the will of the crystal was hard to dismiss -- pure light, attempting to outshine the darkness. Gavin could do everything in his power to reassure her, but she would remain on guard until it was safe in the Temple under her watchful eye.
“Should you fall to its song, I promise not to cut you down with your own weapons.”
A disconcerting promise, but one to take comfort in nonetheless, at least to Mariah. From there, all she could do was wait in silence as Gavin approached the pedestal to pluck the crystal from its resting place again. Mariah breathed in a deep breath as she braced herself for that same shockwave to pulse through the room, the pedestal no longer channeling the crystal’s energies and sending them violently throughout the air. In turn, the runes on the walls slowly began to fade into nothing, no longer fueled or serving a purpose.
If there were any doubts that it had been a fluke once before, they were shattered the moment Gavin laid those golden eyes upon another. Faster victory. Easier attunement. Mariah’s jaw locked. What was a Lightsider of this strength doing among the Dark Jedi? Was he truly one of the lost ones? Questions rang violently in Mariah’s head, but with Gavin’s affirmation, they needed to move, and quickly. Each spare second was another possibility he would succumb.
Mariah circled Gavin once to ensure that the enchantment had worked. Sure enough, she found herself able to get within striking distance without feeling the dissonance of that crystal piercing into her soul. It worked. Hiding the awe from her features, she ceased her circling to settle behind him, just off to his right side. Looking up at the hooded feature, Mariah caught the faint, shimmering glow of not only his golden eyes but the white and black runes radiating with their protective light.
“Go, and follow my instructions. I’ll take us the fastest route back to the Temple.”
She uttered the whispered command, urging him onward. She would need to keep her eyes on him the whole way to the Temple, else run the risk that he would gain a single advantageous second over her. Now, that was what hung in the balance. One single second, to flee, to attack, to kill. She had made it this far, and she refused to become prey in a momentary lapse of his will over the stone's. Although his usual presence was masked, the light radiating was strong enough to seep through like a small crack in a dam, threatening to break the whole thing down. Should that point come near, she would know, no matter how painful a feat for the woman of the Shadows.

As Mariah began to speak, he began to wonder why handing over his weapons seemed to matter so little. Yet, as he held the crystal once more, it clicked alongside her words of falling to its song. It seemed that for whatever reason, a lapse fell over his mind regarding it. The power of the crystal was indeed great. If he fell to it, there was likely little Mariah could do against him. Even unarmed, he would be difficult to put down.
Once the crystal was in place and he was ready to move out, he merely watched her as she circled him, his head the only part of him to turning to watch her. He was curious as to what she was doing. Checking the best location to kill him from? Ensuring that her spell properly took hold? There was no telling. But she finally settled a bit behind him. A good spot, in his mind. With her readiness to strike him down, she would be in the best place to take him down before he could truly act against her.
With her orders, he nodded and began his trip out of the chamber. Following her directions, he followed the path through the caves, making their way back to the temple. Little did they realize that they were no longer alone. Wandering from their home around Lake Natth, a pair of Hssiss had entered the caves. They had picked up on a small surge of light. Following the flow of the Force, they sought out Gavin and Mariah as they moved.
Making their way nearly halfway through the caves, something suddenly stuck out to Gavin. The power surging through aligned with the light was able to pick up the sense of dark and malicious feeling that emanated from them. He stopped suddenly as he felt the drive of the artifact pulsing within his being. He could have kept moving but risked leading them into the temple. That was something he wouldn't allow. With a deep breath, his head moved slightly as if to look behind him.

At least the majority of the walk back had been uneventful, albeit taxing on the Darksider who attempted to keep herself attuned to the light. At the very least, Gavin hadn’t revealed a single reason yet that he was wrestling control over the artifact in his very hands. With careful instructions, Mariah ensured that the two had walked the fastest path back to the catacombs under the Temple, which would in turn lead them into the hangars. Over the months she had resided here, learning the ins and outs of these tunnels became her primary goal. Today proved her excursions to be a success. She could have led the two back blindfolded, so the discord of the trickling light within her soul was hardly enough to distract her. In her focus over the Lightwielder, though, she found herself unable to hear the Force’s warnings about anything other than him.
With the catacombs’ entrance now in view, something disrupted the steady blinding brilliance of Gavin’s aura. His physical body stopped, forcing her to brush up against him. It was instinctual for her to push her hand up against his back, to push him onwards, as the other reached for the hilt of her saber. However, she didn’t ignite it. She hesitated in a time in which she swore she wouldn't have. There was something about this dissonance that didn’t send an ominous feeling through her bones, which was his only saving grace.
“Let’s move, Phoenix,” Mariah commanded sharply under her breath.
She wouldn’t warn him again. Even if something deep in the back of her mind was telling her to stay her blade, Gavin had a record for pushing his luck with her. Now was the worst time for these games, something she had thought she made clear within the chamber. If he wanted to push his luck, his blood would be on his own hands.

For that moment, the drive of the crystal and Gavin's motivation aligned. He heard her warning and felt the pressure of her hand commanding him forward. As his senses locked on to the presence of the two Hssiss, his mind completely distanced itself from the idea of her striking him down in his hesitation. The synchronization between the two entities seemed to take hold as he suddenly moved, her position allowing him to easily spin around her with ease. "There!" It was extremely faint, but in that single word, it almost sounded as if his voice had altered a bit as if echoing another's on top of his.
Lifting a hand down the path behind them, he had intended to simply use the Force to push and grab them. But something happened that wasn't intended. The lining of their minds and the immense power of the light altered the power in which he chose to use, perhaps even twisting his perception of what he was doing. As his right hand rose, a light began to shine within it before blasting away in a brilliant wave of light that shot down the cavern. The light forced the creatures to reveal themselves not ten feet away as they froze and shuddered under the light's influence.
Not missing a beat, Gavin stepped forward with his left as his other hand came up. Sparks began to appear before shooting out golden beams of lightning that caught the Hssiss and further immobilized them with strong potent beams of Electric Judgement. However, it was at this moment that things began to go awry. The aligning of Gavin's mind and the drive of the crystal broke, yet its influence had found its opening. Where Gavin would have held off with killing them in this state, the light of the artifact pushed him forward to eradicate the darkness. As he moved forward towards them, extra streaks that didn't ensnare the creatures began hitting the walls, causing bits and pieces of rock to crumble and fall.
Stopping only a couple of feet away, he ended his barrage of lightning and brought both hands up in front of him. Channeling the light side of the Force, he focused it into the spot between his hands and caused it to ignite into a ball of white-hot fire. With a thrust of his hands, the fire shot forward, breaking into fast flying scorching needles the tore through the creatures and into the walls, furthering the crumbling of the cavern around them.

Instead of heeding her commands, Gavin shifted his weight and turned away from Mariah. She sucked in a sharp breath of air between gritted teeth and moved to pull her hilt from her belt, to set the furious crimson blade alight. Her thumb hovered over the trigger when his voice boomed out with a fury of its own, shattering through the air and the Force alike. It was a haunting sound, piercing through Mariah’s mind with pure light that nearly sent her sprawling. The very future she had meditated on as a means to avoid was now becoming her reality.
The two hssiss were revealed in a brilliant display of Gavin’s might, amplified a thousandfold by the artifact. What were they doing here, so far away from Lake Natth? Drawn by the seeping presence from the cavern’s opening, they had to have felt it and sought it out. Their untimely and unexpected appearance now became her downfall. In his single mistake of attacking, Mariah could sense it. A symphonic dissonance reached a crescendo as the crystal’s pure light took over his being.
The extra webs of lightning created havoc within the tunnel, as debris and stones began to come loose and crumble to the floor. If he kept this up, the tunnel would soon collapse and leave the beasts as nothing more than crushed corpses. It wasn’t the will of the crystal to hold back the darkness, however, but to wholly eradicate it. With the searing stream of fire, Mariah knew. The crystal would seek the hssiss’ demise and move on to the next source of darkness nearby -- her. Her thumb moved over the ignition and woke Nihilo from its slumber.
Enough.
With that single word echoing within the light like the thousands of shadows it cast, Mariah's voice attempted to shatter through the crystal’s control quietly yet firmly within the Force. The trembling of the tunnel was an ominous warning of what was soon to come, though. Unless she wanted him to be buried with that artifact, she needed to get him to move and fast.
The creatures shrieked and howled from the barrage of light and fire, and Mariah sought to put an end to it. Ensuring that his cloak created that necessary barrier, she reached up with her free hand and grabbed hold of his wrist. She could still feel his presence like a scorching sun beneath the fabric, but she couldn't pay it any mind now. Time was of the essence if they wanted to get out of this alive. She kept her saber alight if the crystal tried to resist against her; however, she pulled at Gavin to flee from the tunnel and back towards the catacombs. She could only hope that he was still somewhere in there. It sure as hell would make her life easier if the Force could offer her a break from her ill-fated life here and now.

Just a few moments more and the creatures would be wiped from existence. The barrage continued despite the area around them beginning to falter. The power of the crystal seemed to have full control.
*Deep within his mind, the mangrove swamp was cast in brilliant light from the sun above. Beneath the water, bubbles of air seeped to the surface from where Gavin lay. How could he have been so foolish? He thought he had prepared enough for this, but the arrival of the Hssiss caused so many problems. Never did he expect the harmonization of his spirit and the artifact. He was more than strong enough to handle the creatures, but in the end, it lined itself so perfectly, the light was able to slip in through the tiniest of cracks. Just a tiny bit of access to its influence was all he needed for the display he created, to cast these abilities so effortlessly. But was all it needed to get inside so that the moment their thoughts broke apart, the shell he created to keep the influence away was shattered. Now the stone held sway over his and Coretha's mind. He was a fool to think that he could handle it.
Deep down, he hoped that Mariah was okay and that he didn't turn against her. He didn't want his life to come to an end, but if keeping him from causing destruction against her and the temple, then he would accept it. But death never came. The light continued to shine and his life continued on.
Just then, something seemed to pierce the brilliance. It was a darkness, sharp and true, carrying with it a voice that rung so clearly in his mind. Enough. His eyes shot open as he recognized it. She was calling him, choosing to stay her blade and allow him the chance to come back. He couldn't allow that chance to be wasted. Pushing himself up, he burst through the water as he worked to solidify his will. This was his world, his mind, and he refused to let anything to rule him. Bit by bit as he stood against the power, the light began to dim as he fought for control. He had to, for both their sakes.*
It wasn't but a second after she spoke to his mind that something happened. His attacks stopped. He didn't move, but it seemed safe to assume that somehow, she was able to reach him. He was still there, fighting back. However, the rocks continued to fall around him though he stayed there, the battle raging in his mind, his will versus that of the artifact. It was only when she grabbed him that he finally budged though he was almost drug along. Through the burning of the light into her hand, so too did some of the darkness resonate with Gavin's, enough for him to further bring his mind back under control as the sudden pull on him distracted the light since it held the greater control.
Bit by bit, his steps became fuller and more stable. Before long, her arm would go limp as he was running beside her. He pulled his wrist free from her, though if she felt it, she would sense the light being returned to the state it was in before the Hssiss arrived. For now, what mattered was getting free of the cave in.

~ One Month Since the Collapse ~
Men and women of the Dark Jedi Order worked tirelessly from dawn until dusk to carve a safe passageway from the catacombs underneath the Tiernvael Temple into the Meditative Canyon. Their instructions and holomaps came from the Fallen Empress herself, who worked throughout many moons to ensure an accurate detailing of the tunnels. Her work was completed, and not a day too soon, before she was attacked by a pair of Hssiss who strayed from Lake Natth, or the official report had been. Although many had their doubts that the Empress was alone, as they had witnessed a shadowy figure with her exiting the catacombs, it was said that he was nothing but a bystander. This bystander's identity was later revealed to be a man known as Gavin Phoenix, a new member of the order who had recently left to finish his work among the Sith on Iridonia. With every question poised against the Empress, she answered fluidly and quickly, without stalling, which immediately hushed the concerns of all those involved in clearing out the collapse. Many had yet to see the truth of her power, though; her delicate and frail appearance made it difficult to believe the reports that she had caused this single-handedly.
It wasn't until the day that a pair of crushed corpses were excavated that all their mumbling doubts were cast away. An analysis revealed that they were indeed Hssiss, just as the Fallen Empress had reported. After a few hours of murmurings and workings to clear their bones from the site, the excavators continued with a renewed sense of vitality, derived from their faint awe. Perhaps their Empress was chosen by the Fallen for reasons they couldn't fathom. With her report solidified, maybe she was far more imposing than others gave her credit for. In the eyes of the ignorant, their Empress had destroyed two Hssiss single-handedly by collapsing the tunnel and dragged out a fellow order member before he was caught in the wreckage, just as she had claimed. With their spirits renewed, they worked with more vitality, clearing out the tunnel in half the estimated time. What more, the normalcy that the Empress had hoped to lure back over the Temple had indeed resumed. The workers who cleared the tunnels were quickly able to return to their former duties, and within the week, the hubbub of rumors surrounding the collapse had been snuffed out. All had returned to entirely back to normal...
What many didn't know, however, was that the map had been altered. Although the excavators managed to reconnect the tunnel to another passageway within the Canyon, Mariah had kept the lot of them far from her People's chambers. If she could help it, it would remain buried throughout the ages, with neither Outsider, Guardian, nor Shadows to ever find it again. The relic had been retrieved to remain within the grasp of its rightful owner, and there was no desire from the woman of Shadows to ever return it to its resting place. Thus were the dangers of the modern-day graveyard robbers. Somewhere in the galaxy, a heist had already found success on Korriban. Mariah vowed that it would be the only one. Her first mission was deemed a success. Now, she ensured that Ambria's treasure of Shadows would never be found--not without blood spilled by her hand.

As the Dark Jedi Order continued to gather its strength, students resumed undertaking excursions to the Meditative Canyons. There, they would find lodging in one of the many caves containing residences for the night and undertaking meditative exercises during the day. Several caverns had undergone repair work to provide secluded spots cut off from people, while a dozen of the rocky platforms were also picked out for use. The Force Nexus here, although altered in some way, still provided a perfect spot within which to focus ones powers
