The Autarch-Class Star Destroyer, a product of the brilliant minds at Bilbringi Shipayards, working in concert with Sienar-Jaemus systems, Kuat-Entralla Engineering, and the First Order Navy, was designed as a next-generation version of the Imperial Class Star Destroyer. Built from the ground up with the fleet mandate of the First Order following the destruction of the Galactic Alliance, the project was developed in relative secret, working with Grand Admiral Garrick Needa to make the ship as Navy-oriented as possible. Intended to build off the successes of the ISD-II while remedying its faults, it is a truly revolutionary battleship, and a worthy successor to the ship that was so beloved by the Empire.
Capable of functioning in a larger fleet, but also able to operate by itself for extended time periods, it is designed to combat the sort of hit and run warfare to be expected from remnants of the Galactic Alliance, and their former allies. Away from the eyes of Imperial High Command, Garrick Needa, who had spent most of his life serving aboard Imperial Star Destroyers, worked with the designers at the two renowned cruiser designers to identify weaknesses in the old ship, and devise specific solutions to combat them, while integrating new technologies developed by the First Order.
The weapons systems of the ship were designed to maximise the potential of the already existing weapons power output. Firstly, due to the nature of the ship, and the fact that it could very realistically be operating on its own, patrolling star systems, greater emphasis on point defense systems was needed. To that end, a third of the ship’s turbolasers were replaced with quad laser cannons to ensure that the ship would be protected from fighters. In addition, the turbolasers, which had previously been haphazardly placed across the hull and superstructure of the ship, have now been grouped into clearly defined regions clustered on the hull, in order for the fire to be more controlled, and more effective in its distribution. Furthermore, it also eases fire control, and allows for multiple ships to be engaged easily and effectively (nodes similar to those found on the Assertor-Class). Furthermore, some turbolasers and laser cannons have been placed on the rear “lip” of the ship, surrounding the engines, to provide some coverage to the aft section from fighters and capital ships. To work alongside this, the octuple barbette turbolasers, previously placed on the sides of the ship, have now been placed on the ships centerline, each higher in elevation than the one in front of it, in order to provide maximum coverage, with all weapons being able to fire forward, and all weapons able to fire on both sides of the ship. Finally, 10 heavy turbolasers have been removed in favor of two long range turbolasers, due to the fact that these would make pursuits of rebel ships much easier.
