"I do not care about credits. Wealth is something I was born to, not something I crave for: that is for the weak of mind and the spineless"
He said, gesturing with his right hand.
"The knights' perspective is fundamentally flawed. They are afraid of power and of the Dark itself"
Soontir looked determined.
"I am willing to pay the price, master of the Ren"

Harnan could tell almost immediately that Soontir had misunderstood the point he was trying to make. He motioned for the boy to follow him then, turning on his heels and heading into the Citadel proper. The Purge Troopers remained standing where they were. Harnan meanwhile navigated the many hallways of the Ren Citadel with practiced precision. Knowing exactly where each and every corridor led I am all too aware of your lack of worth when it comes to money, baron... As they moved deeper into the fortress, they passed by a number of open doorways. Showing off rooms of various purpose and need that were filled with state of the art equipment. A clear sign that the Ren did not want for credits either We ask, and the First Order provides. Gratitude for the service we have performed... Harnan led the way down several flights of stair then, taking Soontir down into the deepest depths of the Citadel of the Ren. Finally arriving a few moments later to the very basement of the Fortress where they were greeted by a large durasteel door. It stood a full story tall and was two yards thick. Without a word, Harnan raised his hand up and reached out with the Force, working the locking mechanism in just the right way. A deep thud sound sounded out, before the massive door was lifted up into the ceiling by massive gears that could shift the weight.
The door's movement revealed a dark room beyond, which Harnan motioned for Soontir to enter first. Causing deep red lights to activate a few moments later, revealing a giant slab of Obsidian in the center of the room. Due to the dark red lighting, one would be able to just make out the markings that marred the monoliths surface. Cause by a mixture of chisels and lightsaber slashes. Harnan came to a stop and looked up at the Obsidian rock The former name of every Ren is written upon this stone. A record of every member, past and present, that belongs to the Ren. Upon the day we join the Knights, we write our name upon this rock, and then slash through it with a saber. Signifying that who we once were no longer exists. Upon the day that we die, a second vertical slash is added. We leave behind our past here. Our names, our titles, our lineage. All that we had before we were a Ren is left behind. We are swords that bring Order and Balance to a Galaxy torn apart by Chaos.../span] He lowered his gaze from the Obsidian Monolith and turned to face Soontir in the darkly lit room Now do you understand my point? The price you must pay is that of your name. Baron Soontir Fel the Third will cease to exist. You will have no claim to the title of Baron, nor the family of the Fel's. You will become a Ren, with a name chosen by you by which to be known as. You will only ever be able to tell your fellow Ren the name you once went by and the life you lived before joining us. To everyone else, you will simple be a Knight of Ren... Harnan reached out his hand and, with the Force, summoned a hammer and chisel to him. Gripping the tools and holding them across his chest If you are to train as a Ren, then you will become a Ren... Otherwise, leave this place and remain a Fel. The choice is yours... Harnan held out the hammer and chisel toward Soontir then

Soontir looked unimpressed by all the displays of Harnan, at least he managed to keep face across the whole deal. Certainly the Ren cared about power, all Harnan did since he landed was a demonstration of his control and pure strenght. He did sense the dark side emanating from the whole place, like a dark beacon. It was an impressive structure. He remains silent during Harnan's speech, emotionless, lips tight and pale.
"You did not understand me, at all, master of Ren. I was born with it, you do not crave or desire something you already have. I have an empty title and a vacuous name: I am already nothing, nothing I want to be"
He said, clenching the left fist. His voice was deep and booming, powerful.
"The past can and will die, burnt to ashes. I do not care"
Soontir calls the force and the tools come to his hands. Then, he proceeds to chisel the words in aurabesh on the polished obsidian surface, a stiff back. He could see his own reflection, the dark troubled eyes and the prominent nose. Soontir frowns as he wrote the name, letter by letter and he certainly could have wavered a little when finishing the last cut; which looked raw and unfinished. Then, the dark-clothed man calls his lightsaber to his open right hand: the bleeding ragged blade erupts from the saber's hilt with a hiss. The man formerly known as Soontir slashes his own name, leaving a burning, deep and dark mark. He puts the blade to a side and looks at Harnan. A name called him from within.
"I am Vardus Ren, no-one and... nothing else"
His eyes were lit by the red lightsaber's ominous light.

Harnan watched in muted silence as Soontir had his outburst. His admissions in his anger were what needed to be said out loud, for Soontir to admit that his name and title meant nothing. It was two pronged in meaning if he was honest. On the one hand, it would help the boy embrace his next phase as a Ren with ease. But it also meant he was renouncing any possible and future claims to the throne. Something which Harnan did not anticipate would ever rise up as an issue, but something that was better to nip in the bud.
He let the tools fly out of his hands then, as the name Soontir Fel was carved into the obisidan stone surface, before Vardus Ren drew his saber and cut through the name he once held. Leaving behind the boy, and becoming Knight of Ren. Harnan gave a nod of his head Good, as it should be... Now to deal with slightly less delicate matters... Follow me... Harnan lead the way out of the room, waiting until Vardus had cleared the doorway before activating the mechanism to close it. The massive metal structure lowered itself down as Harnan led the way back up through the Citadel. Arriving into the control room that overlooked the hangar bay that the guards of the former Soontir Fel waited within. Harnan activated a comm line to the Purge Troopers down on the bay floor Proceed... There was a quick affirmative before the Purge Troopers brought their rifles up into a ready position and fired upon the four guards. The Citadel's shield system raised up and the local defensive weapons started acquiring a targeting solution upon the Resurgent in orbit. Crews were already collecting up the bodies of the fallen guards and packing them into crates as Harnan brought up a comm line to Whisperer Captain Algorea of the Whisperer, this is Grand Moff Harnan Ren. You are ordered to stand down and await a boarding party of Purge Troopers. Your master, Baron Soontir Fel, tried and failed to make a covert attack on the Knights of Ren. He and his guards have been executed for their attack. Resist and you will be viewed as complicit in your former master's plans. Surrender, and we should be able to prove you are innocent of any conspiracy. The choice is yours... With the firepower arrayed against the Whisperer, Captain Algorea stood the ship down and waited for the boarding party. Harnan cut the line and turned back to Vardus Not as clean a cut as I would have liked, but sometimes such things happen... Soontir Fel will be stricken from the records, and cease to exist except only to those that remember him. And they will forget his existence soon enough, preferring to forget that he was a traitor to the Empire... Now, Vardus, your training can begin...

Vardus had turned off the blade, its ragged edge returning to deep within the empty socket of the lightsaber's emiter. The red light bathing the new Ren's face disappeared, leaving him with the appareance of a trouble and weary young man. He returned the saber to its place on the belt with a smooth motion. Vardus nodded to Harnan's words and followed him silently across the austere hallways. He didn't flinch when the men were slaughtered, no matter if part of him mourned it, the feeling was supressed and suffocated inside his chest. The newest knight of Ren still remained silent with Harnan's speech to his former captain, neither did he openly react when his new master said that he was to be branded a traitor and forgotten, he did not mind and his face remained emotionless. The only thing he said was:
"Yes, master"
He flexed his arms' muscles, closing and opening the hands, clad in black leather.
"What is thy bidding?"
Vardus felt a surge of emotions and raw power flowing through his veins. The past was dead, finally it had succumbed with a cry of silent agony. Now, he would be able to unleash the full potential holed within his chest. A last flickering though crossed his mind before embracing the dark and the new future. A distant shout.
Soontir...
The man now called Vardus Ren saw for a moment the face of his sister, ravaged by sorrow. However, the would-be knight of Ren mentally dismissed the image, focusing again on the man before him and letting dark powers surround his mind like tar.

Without so much as a word, Harnan turned and lead the way through the fortress once more. Atlantia and the Purge Troopers would competently take care of the crew and sending them on their way back to the capital. A priority message had been sent to the Emperor's aides, who would deal with the arrangements needed. By the end of the day, Soontir Fel would be no more. Only Nicademus would know that Vardus Ren and Soontir Fel were one and the same. For now though, Harnan focused upon the task at hand, arriving to one of the training rooms a few moments later.
His shield, spear and saber hilt flew through the air toward him, summoned via the Force. His saber hilt clipped into place upon the back of his hilt, while his shield slid onto his left forearm, while he gripped his spear with his right hand. Harnan proceeded to the opposite side of a training ring and turned to face Vardus. His shield positioned to protect himself I'm going to run you through your paces, and see what you can do... And how much I have to teach you... Fight me however you like, with the force, with your Saber...

He, again, followed Harnan without a single word, but he allowed himself a faint smile when they arrived to the training ring. That was what he truly needed and... enjoyed. He could sense the Force, surrounding him. Vardus started to summon the grief, the hate and the sense of loss he had felt, fueling his inner turmoil, his power. The saber was soon lit, the ragged blade burning ozone and filling the air with that characteristic smell. So, Harnan used a shield? That was unheard off, felt primitive. He held the sword pointing to the ground as he walked towards Ren. And, without notice, he dashed forward, delivering an upwards blow. Every strike had weight, it was like he intended to maul or maim every single time. The sword felt with sheer strenght, with force, channeling all his inner rage and hatred. His style was aggresive, dominating. He delivered the bows with confidence, sometimes inverting the grip on his sword and slashing with the ragged blade. Often he parried and blocked Harnan's responses with his bare hand, using the force to stop the blade and strike from the other side.

Harnan had felt the Force gathering around Vardus the moment the challenge had been laid down. Harnan's grip had tightened upon the shaft of the spear in preparation. The attack came a few moments later, with Vardus rushing and aggressively slashing through the air with the ragged red blade. Harnan kept his shield placed between them, with the blade coming into contact with the metallic surface and glancing across it. No visible sign was present that a lightsaber had just lashed the shield. Despite the opening for a strike that had been presented, Harnan remained on the defensive.
He blocked and parried Vardus' strikes, only occasionally lashing out toward Vardus in return. And even when he did, Harnan always kept his shielding blocking the path of Vardus' saber. By any measure of the word Tank, Harnan was well and truly one. He gave very little ground and reserved his energy, allowing Vardus to let out his anger. Their styles were almost polar opposites Is that all you've got? You've barely made a scratch in my shield...

"I've seen rocks that move less"
Vardus grunted, like an animal, but he lowered his weapon and dashed back. He looked frustrated. Then, the former baron reversed his grip and put both hilt and blade behind his back. Like a predator, he started to circle Harnan, the hair falling over his eyes, sweaty. He starts to channel the Force using his anger to fuel himself. The man motions with his free hand to throw an object on the room in Harnan's direction, but coming from the opposite side Vardus was standing and inmediately dashed forward, lowering his body and moving close to the ground, slashing from behind with momentum, upwards with the inverted grip, trying to get under Ren's defense.

Harnan smiled beneath his mask as Vardus grew more frustrated. No doubt the man had been forced to face an opponent that was as stalwart as Harnan. The Imperial Knights tended to be much more agile with their fighting styles. In fact, most Force Users tended to exhibit a lot of highly offensive techniques that benefited from and took advantage of movement. It was for this reason, that Harnan presented such a challenge for his opponents. It wasn't because he was a master duelist or swordsman, but because his style was so archaic and reserved. Very few, if any, modern techniques accounted for a shield that could fend off a Lightsaber.
Harnan slowly shifted around, keeping Vardus in front of himself. He felt a shift in the Force, and a tingle down the back of his neck in warning. But instead of turning to cut the flying case in half or block it with his shield, Harnan summoned the Force to himself. There were few techniques he was truly adept at, but there was one he had mastered over the last decade. A half shell of invisible energy formed behind his back, which the case crashed against and crumpled into. Leaving his shield free to deflect the upward strike from Vardus. Harnan dropped his spear then, freeing his hand to grab at Vardus' clothing as Harnan drove the rim of the shield down to pin the man's lightsaber arm upon the ground

Vardus struggled frantically, trying to free himself from the grip of Harnan: the new Ren even tried to command the force to push or move his opponent, with no avail. Then, he remained still, as if defeated, but a pearl of sweat formed on his forehead, frowning. And, then, Harnan could feel something, like a spear made of pure thought trying to pierce through the veils protecting and shielding his mind. Vardus was using an almost heretical form of a Jedi mind trick, trying to unravel Harnan's mind and demolish his defenses. Cold tentacles of dark and invisible power, thick like tar, probed violently through the master of Ren's mind, seeking to freeze and incapacitate him.
"I see... a woman..."
The former baron's gaze was unflinching.
"...Vaylin"
He allowed himself a slight smile.

Struggle as Vardus might try, Harnan did not budge nor loosen his grip. Their little sparring session was all but over now. But just when it seemed as if Vardus was going to concede defeat, Harnan felt the attack upon his mind. While Harnan had mastered the physical Force, the ethereal Force was one area he had never managed to fully master. Even so, his grip remained firm as he weathered the attack. He let Vardus in, allowing him to be distracted by Harnan's youth in the Eternal Empire, meanwhile he kept his true secrets hidden and locked away beyond the new Ren's reach. Harnan remained un-phased by the mention of Vaylin's name Yes, the High Justice turned Empress of the Eternal Empire... Her madness knew no bounds, but she was ahead of the curve in one area... Harnan leaned his weight further down upon Vardus as he mentally pulled up and relived the fight he had with the Sith all those years ago. The dance the pair had done, and then the eventual disarming of his opponent, and then beheading of the Sith I struggled with the decision on that day. Faced with beheading an unarmed opponent did not feel like justice. But Vaylin knew something I took years to realize: The Sith and Jedi can not be allowed to live. They bring chaos and disorder with their ideological wars... Now the Ren must be the blade that purges the Galaxy of such chaotic elements... Harnan pushed Vardus back, forcing them both into a mindscape that was nothing but a white void Did you think her name might terrify me Vardus?

Vardus allowed himself a faint smile.
"She is but a ghost"
He said, with a mirthless chuckle.
"The past is long gone, let it die"
His voice sounds booming and deep, like the song of a broken bell.
"Part of you clings to that memory, somehow. Despite your charade of getting rid of our names and life, you're a man who was born in the past and was moulded by it"
There was some cold resolve in the mind grip of Vardus, an edge of cruelty, but deep within laid a sense of loss and despair. His mind was in turmoil, a black abyss of sadness and grief. The young man was channeling those feelings, strengthening his own power. There were some hints of a mechanical breath, the cold feeling of metallic limbs attached to burnt flesh. His mental projection was dark and tall, the face masked and hidden behind a helmet.

Harnan had been subjected to Illaria's mind tricks for well over a decade. Facing off against Vardus, as powerful as the young Ren was, did not intimidate Harnan in the slightest. The boy was strong, of that there was no doubt. He would scare and terrify anyone else he might face. But Harnan was here to test him, to see what potential yet awaited. Despite pinning Vardus down upon the ground, Harnan's mindscape version crossed his arms over his chest She is a ghost, and one that holds no power against me. But that day, that moment, is a reminder of the lengths we must go to, to achieve victory... It's also a reminder to do as I say, not as I do... So what exactly is it that you're looking for up here? Harnan reached up with his right hand and tapped the temple of his helmet You think you can perhaps break my mind? Shatter it into a million pieces?

"I just wanted to know if the rock could be broken, if the water could still leak into your very foundations and make yourself crumble"
He stepped forward, hand raised: the cold ethereal limbs of many inquisitive hands grabbed Harnan's mind with ferocious strenght for a second, for a moment that lasted hours. And then, released the grip. The figure lost its shadow and its helmet, revealing the young man underneath, troubled and worried.
"I wanted to see if you were human, like me. If you suffered and had reasons to grief. If you weren't like Jedi and Sith, too lost in their ways to even comprehend there're no limits and that imbalance is not unnatural, it's not disorder... and that what they seek, is, actually, a farce"
He seemed to shrink and then they both were back to the training room.
"You win. I yield, master"
Vardus turns off the lightsaber, releasing it from his clunched fist. The crossguarded-weapon drops with a little thud.

Harnan didn't flinch nor move a single muscle as Vardus' form approached him. He raised an eyebrow and let the hands reach in and allowed snippets of his years with the Ren to flow through. What he allowed through were the many missions he and Illaria had run over the years, the pair almost exclusively working together. And then he shared something the other Ren knew, that Vardus was about to learn. The shadowy figure of the previous Master of the Ren took shape. The fight that Harnan waged against the man alongside Kortos and Valance. And then the ultimate fate of the Mega-class Super Star Destroyer that had served as the Ren's hide out for years.
There were many details and secrets Harnan kept safely hidden away. But these snippets and insights into his past were things he would willingly share with Vardus, if only to save time later explaining them I have more reason to grieve than any other being in existence right now... As the mindscape fell apart, Harnan released the pressure of his shield upon Vardus' wrist and released his hold upon the boy's collar. Moving his hand to grip Vardus' now empty hand, he pulled the other Ren to his feet Every day I suffer the curse of living and surviving, knowing that those I cared for most are dead... No one is immortal or devoid of all emotion. We all have weaknesses, some just hide it better than others... He shifted his shield off his forearm then and slid it into place upon his back. The match was over, but Vardus' training was only just beginning I've been fighting against the Jedi and Sith for my entire life across two different lifetimes. I know better than most the folly of both groups. The Ren do not suffer such blind logic and idealism. We face the world as it is, not as we wish it to be...

Vardus let the river of thoughts flow. He saw Illaria and the shared times with the newly-appointed Master of Ren. There was something beyond a mere camaderie in there, the memories were shaped and surrounded by many entangled feelings. And a profound sense of loss flooded the shared mental connection to the point it was hard to bear. The knight could see the grief provoked by the said character, as much as he could feel the dark emanating like a fountain from the slayed former Master of Ren. It was intoxicating. Once the mindscape was shattered and the world returned to itself Vardus found himself free, and used Harnan's help to regain his footing.
"There're those who believe they're beyond of that, or who're buried too deep within their own ego to be redeemed"
He picks up the crossguarded saber and places it on the belt.
"Both are flawed. Both are weak. And both should be cleansed from this Galaxy, with fire. The world cannot be changed by the whim of two decadent orders. The Sith are flawed, for they're mirrored images of the Jedi, born from them, and the Imperial knights, a travesty"
He puts both arms akimbo, pensive.
"Teach me, master, and let me destroy our enemies"
Vardus raises and clenches one fist.
"I have power. But I need you to teach me how to fully unleash it and wield it: to kill the past and its heinous worshippers"

There was indeed a measure of logic to Vardus' statement that the Jedi and Sith were but mirror images of one another. The Jedi preached of peace and prosperity while denying the existence of their emotions. while the Sith preached war and disorder while falsely believing themselves free of control, despite enslaving themselves to their emotions. Then there were the Imperial Knights that were wannabe Jedi. Their "moral" compasses serving as little more than a distraction from the battles that needed to be fought.
He crossed his arms over his chest then, regarding the younger Ren for a moment as the man pleaded to be trained. While it was a needless plea, given Harnan had already decided to teach the boy from the moment he took up his new name, it was still well worth the observation Oh, fear not Vardus, I fully intend to teach you... All that power, that anger... that hate and fear... I will teach you to master it, to control it. Lashing out like you were will lead no where and risks leading you down the same path as the Sith. We'll face what ever demons you have to so that you can tame that unchecked power. After all, even we can be consumed by the darkness we use... Understood?

There was a shadow on Vardus' face for a moment, but it was gone as soon as it had arrived.
"Understood, master"
The path of the Sith was something treaded over by quite a few on his line: even the most sanctimonious among them had toyed with the Dark Side sometimes. It was a call from the abyss they all knew too well.

The following weeks and months were filled with almost daily training sessions between Harnan and Vardus. While the new Ren was a fairly skilled swordsman and proficient Force User, there were always areas for improvement. Things such as blade work, form, stance, powers to use in different situations and how to call upon them. The last item, more than most others, were of particular focus with Vardus. During their first training session, Harnan had seen into Vardus' mind. He had seen the troubled and worried boy that existed beneath the surface.
It was a painful process, but Harnan forced the boy to face his inner fears. With his rebirth as a Ren, Vardus no longer held any title or name which had a legacy he needed to live up to. His Fel heritage was no more. Now he was just a Ren, a weapon used to bring Balance and Order to the Galaxy. Nothing more and nothing less. It was perhaps a harsh reality to face, but one Harnan forced Vardus to face each and every day until the boy would come to terms with it. It was during these sessions that Harnan oversaw and guided Vardus in constructing a battle helmet. Concealing one's identity was a key part of being a Ren. You could not be recognized as who you used to be. You were a faceless being, known only as a Ren.
He also took Vardus through ways of harnessing his anger and hate. Instead of letting them control his actions, Vardus would control them and bend them to his will. To achieve this, Harnan drilled the Ren's creed and goals into the boy. Order and Balance would be achieved one day, by using his anger and hate as tools he could access greater strength in times of need to strike down the enemies of the Ren and the First Order.
When Vardus wasn't training with Harnan, Neith Ren would take him out on practice runs with the new TIE Silencer he had been granted as a Knight of Ren. Harnan also put Vardus through training missions with the Purge Troopers that answered only to the Knights of Ren. These missions were used as both a test of his skill to command soldiers, while also training him to improve his ability to do so
