During the era of the New Sith Wars, the Aldar had drastically begun to redesign many of their forward cruisers, in an effort to improve the survivability of the ship and crew. The Dawnstar-class heavy defense cruisers were fielded right behind the massive Stormborn-class star defenders. Their main specialty was as forward command cruisers with a massive hangar space which defined the ship more as a command carrier than an assault cruiser. The ship was outfitted with advanced heavy shields that allowed it to insert close to the battle, before releasing its full complement of fighters.
The modern refit maintained its boat-like appearance and its use of Archonite crystals, which gave the ship some limited semi-sentience, making this ship usable only to Aldar or people that the Aldar were allied with and liked. The early designs often included the capacity for water-landing and atmospheric operations, the Dawnstar was no exception to this norm. As much as it was capable of battle, it was also a passenger carrier and colony ship.
The Dawnstar was an unusual design in that it had two modes: Travel and Siege. When in travel mode, it concealed most of its more aggressive features, and more closely resembled an artistic sea vessel. Once it opened up siege mode, all its weapons come to bear, with the hangar bays open, and segments pulling back until they almost look like they're floating apart from the main ship's body. The strategy behind this mode was to reinforce the hull in the most vital segments, making the ship harder to damage.
The cruiser fielded an impressive 420 starfighters, along with 7,000 troops with support vehicles and two prefabricated bases.
Despite its immense size, due to low population numbers, the Dawnstar was capable of operating with a minimum crew count, and boasted 15 heavy turbolaser batteries, 30 turbolaser cannons, 30 point-defense laser cannons, 14 ion cannons, 7 tractor beams and 7 assault concussion missile tubes, making it a fairly impressive and imposing foe to face in battle. These ships were capable of defending a planet entirely on their own if necessary.
