Garrick Needa, always having a particular soft spot for one of the greatest Imperial military projects of all time, the TIE Defender, sought to create a heavy fighter like the defender that, while more cost effective, could work alongside the TIE-X to produce even more devastatingly effective results then the Defender. The results of this project for a heavy fighter was the TIE Broadsword. Heavily armed and well shielded, while still maintaining a good degree of maniability and speed, the Broadsword was intended to fulfill a similar role as the Alliance’s venerable X-Wing, alongside the efficiency and raw strength of the TIE Defender. In this light, the Broadsword is somewhat unique among TIEs in that it uses the X-Wings foldable wing system. A large shield projector in the rear of the ship allowed for redundant shield generation capacity, while its use of a hyperdrive allows it to enter battle predeployed, in order to screen against attacks until the carried complement of fighters can be launched. It’s heavy armament allows it to both attack and defend effectively, while its shielding (and redundant shielding) greatly increased per-ship survivability.
