Description:
Voon Ostrenis-Massa, senator and chief-of-state of the Resistance called upon his techs and engineers to develop new starfighters, in order to boost the relative power of the fleet. One of the models they came up with is a newly-minted BTL-S4 Y-wing; a development upon the previous BTL-S3 and BTL-S2, used in the years prior. The Megafortresses bombers employed by the Resistance were useful to crack open enemy fortifications and -when employed surgically- large dreadnoughts; however, they were ungainly and fragile. There was a need for reliable and resilient bombers who could conduct attack runs on their own, not needing any fighter escort to perform their bombing duties. The BTL-S4 took the Y-wing model a step forward, covering most its fuselage with armor plates and a reinforced hull: that, in unison with the new shielding, provided the starfighter with an unseen resilience. The greater changes came with the ship's firepower, though. The bomber was also outfited with four laser Taim & Bak IX4 laser canons at its tip, instead of the customary two, and the turret was equiped with a double-barrelled ion gun, basically doubling the previous models' firepower. The proton-torpedoes launchers had their numbers increased to three, instead of two. All in all, the new Y-wing was a quite powerful bomber that could also function as a starfighter, for the new number of guns and the more powerful ion turret put in range of many other models designed for dogfighting, its shortcoming still being the relative lack of agility and speed. The astromech slot was placed within the fuselage and adapted for the more compact BB-units -leaving more room for the more powerful shields and weapon systems-, reducing their vulnerability and increasing the all-around survivality of the vessel.
