Maul-class Star Destroyer.
Ship Class: Star Destroyer.
Ship Role: Destroyer/Command ship.
Ship Length: 1,750 m.
Agility (A): 3
Defensive (D): 3
Offensive (O): 3
Speed (S): 3
Special Gear: 3 (Gravity Well Generator, Jamming Device, Advanced Targetting System)
Description:
A dark will ruled over the engineers who put in motion the design of the Maul-class. They were ordered to create a new destroyer, one that would be not only reliable in most roles, but also surgically precise and powerful; a new battlehorse to fight larger and more powerful ships, while not being rended powerless against smaller crafts. Because, even if the lion does not concern itself with the opinion of the sheep, they cannot be brought down in large numbers. Thus, over Mustafar, Dromund Kaas, Eriadu and Sullust, engineers were put to work and prototypes were tested and discarded; their materials and parts salvaged to build the next. Those among the designers who did not manage to fulfill expectations were executed, reminding the surviving weapon developers to keep up to the levels of exigence demanded. And, finally, a ship was launched, first of its line, a star destroyer of a new class, christened as Maul-class, for the ship was powerful, but also deceptive and disruptive. The destroyer was not only equipped with a gravity well generator, anchoring the enemy to the battlefield, but also with a powerful jamming device to scramble their communications and cripple the enemy's coordination and battleplan. On top of that, a new powerful automated system was incorporated, one so precise as to be able to target and shoot down starfighters accurately, or pinpoint the enemy ships' vulnerable parts and tear them down from afar. The sleek and sharp design took queues from the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer and the Allegiance-class Star Destroyers, with the angular and more narrow profile making the ship more efficient design-wise and harder to target accurately -moreso with the inclussion of the jamming devices-. The ship only had one ventral hangar, capable of deploying a full wing of starfighters (72), but having little room for bigger craft.
As per the ship's firepower, it had two hundred and twenty weapon emplacements over its surface: 70 heavy turbolaser cannons, 60 heavy ion cannons, 20 multi-purpose missile-launchers, 20 point-defense cannons and 40 laser cannons. The weapons were linked to the powerful new processing units that were in charge of targeting and firing the weapons: thusly, many of the incorporated systems were either automated or aided in its function by non-organic processor units. The advanced targetting system is capable of even shooting down smaller craft, which destroyers of the type and size are mostly unable to do. The improved systems, however, required extensive circuitry and a great power output, straining the core's performance, which prevented the ship from having stronger shields, a greater gun account for a ship of its size or more powerful engines. Still, the destroyer's advanced systems and all-around-good performace presented it as an optimal candidate to become a reliable battlehorse for the Sith Lords and their minions. The first issued Maul-class was paraded by the project's commissioner, Vallius Savage, before his father Lord Viox on orbit over Mustafar, his throneworld.
