The Arena on Geonosis was large, and the stands were packed with Geonosians screaming for blood and flying about. It was all a holo, of course, but the smells and the sounds were as real as the sights, and so was the pain and risk of injury, though not death. Mandalorians didn't train easy, and Kaine's training camp only promised to make you better, not to make you feel better. That part was on the individual. The only parts of the contest that were rigged were the crowds, which would cheer for each individual when Kaine signalled them to do so, when he saw merit in their fighting. The contests could be scaled from a challenge for a six year old human, to a fully seasoned and armed warrior as Kaine saw fit. He had combat packages for a dozen of the finest fighters he'd ever encountered, some friend, some foe, as well as more standard sentient creatures of various skill levels and equipment loadouts. He even had a few beasts, because it was Geonosis, and because sometimes the wild intruded on your hunt, and sometimes you were hunted by something bigger and meaner than you. And with the arena's inbuilt repulsors, airjets, and other hidden accoutrements, he could simulate Force sensitive opponents for the trainees. The only mark of rank on Kaine Australis today was the field marshal's baton, pure beskar, naturally, which he used to point and direct the arena's systems as he wished, utilizing his HUD. Otherwise, he wore his regular armour, sidearms only, with his axe at his belt, no longsword or rifle in evidence. He was here to train, and offer to pass on some of his knowledge to the younger generations. Turning sixty had made the old shabuir take stock of his life, and though he had often tried to do his best by his people, he had often fallen short. Teaching others to fight was something he knew, he'd done it for an entire career. Today, he would do what he could.

*Vrr'rattha's dual whipped tail thrashed back and forth like a whip. Each ruby eye blinked slowly in the dimly lit cell. The sweet, sweaty smell of the Genosians engulfed his senses, but also a new tang that he could not place. The nexu let out a deep throaty purr in anticipation, hackle quills quivering as he tasted the air again. Claws raked the red sands of the cell floor. There was little he could pick up in the range of his heat sensing pits. His jaws snapped when he let out a little impatient moan for battle.*

Jair entered the training arena. It was time he honed his skills a bit.
OOC: Yooooo! It's been so long since I've done OOC on the boards! LOL Just let me... take this in... for a moment... ah... the nostalgia. Ok. So... What's the best way to start learning? I've always wanted to give this a try but never did. I figure, now is as good a time as any!

Two large brutish fellows noticed the Jedi before Kaine did, as the old Mando was distracted by two Twi'lek girls wrestling in an adjoining area. Technology and the galaxy being what it was, the man's face was known, and the intelligence database was extensive enough. Jedi Knight, once padawan to Gene Kenobi. The brutes were professional warriors, even if they didn't look it or behave like it when they didn't have to. "Jair!" one, a ZeHethbra said, rhyming the name with Chair. "It's Jair!" Said a Yaka, rhyming the name with Zaire. Kaine heard the commotion and turned. "You're both wrong. It's Jair." Kaine said, rhyming the word with Fire and walking over. He got the notification in his HUD as to the visitor's identity. As he spoke he assessed the Jedi through his visor. "You two take off, i'll work with our Jedi friend." Grumbling but not willing to argue with the Mandalorian Field Marshal, both large fellows wandered away, still arguing over the pronunciation of Jair's name. "Got any preference on where you wanna start?" Kaine asked? He was no stranger to fighting Force users, and though he respected their talents, he didn't fear them. Nor did he have any particular distaste for them. He didn't subscribe to their particular ideology or viewpoint, but that was fine. Not everyone was clever enough to become Mandalorian. He'd teach them anyway. OOC : NO OOC ON THE BOARDZ Oh wait this is the GBA and its not 2010 and im not trying to maintain a hard-won Gold badge. Woohoo! Carry on with the OOC.

Jair was absolutely astounded by the three men who appeared before him. "Wow... this is the most advanced simulation I have ever seen in my life!" He thought to himself. Truly this was a a state of the art training arena. Jair retrieved a lightsaber from his belt. The hilt would appear slightly longer than the average hilt, but, only a single blade would ignite from it right now. A vivid, saturated, yet somewhat pleasant and soothing, bright neon orange beam emanated from the hilt, lighting up his face like the average golden hour on the average terrestrial planet, before a sunset.
"Any Jedi, no matter how seasoned, should revisit the basics. I seek to do that today."
OOC: Basically what I told you in chat, I gotta learn how to do this from the ground up pretty much lol.

"Any Jedi, no matter how seasoned, should revisit the basics. I seek to do that today." Kaine nodded. He turned and waved one of the young helpers over. A young Twi'lek boy ran over to the Alor with a metallic object, on closer inspection, it was a lightsaber hilt. The Darksaber. Kaine looked down at the young boy. "You're sure it's the right one?" The boy nodded. Kaine frowned. "Because if it's the wrong one, you'll get your shebs kicked." The boy giggled. Hearing the Alor's growl, the boy's mother came over to see there was no problem. Smiling, the boy turned to his mama. "The Alor's cursing. Can I say Shebs too?" The woman's dark blue eyes narrowed at Kaine. "No you cannot! Kaine, not in front of the young ones." She chided, taking the lad by the shoulder and leading him away. Kaine grinned and lit the lightsaber, its shiny black blade humming to life. "We'll skip the explanation of how a lightsaber works, i'm sure they still teach that part at the Jedi Academy."Relaxing into his combat stance, Kaine held his weapon in his right hand, a one handed grip keeping his left hand free. By facing Jair side on, Kaine made his body a smaller target, something he did without thinking. They were approximately a meter apart, both holding lit weapons, both easily within striking range, but not yet engaged. As this was a training bout, Kaine kept himself back until they were ready to trade strikes. "When you're ready, we'll begin."OOC : At this stage we're still setting up, youre free to move around, change weapons, or talk. Time hasn't slowed down for combat yet, so the time of your post can cover any amount of time.
Once combat starts, your post will be covering at most a few seconds of action.

Jair smirked ever so slightly as the woman reprimanded Kaine and removed the younglings from the sparring area. However his countenance changed to one of awe and astonishment when he lit up the Darksaber. This was going to be a fantastic training session. He had a good feeling about it. He nodded. "I'm ready!"
Armed and ignited in his right hand, the Jedi Knight lifted his neon orange blade up to the front of his own face, and then with a flick of the wrist and a flurry, brought it down at an angle, now extending outwards from his right side in an open salute.
OOC: Going with Makashi as that's been listed as my primary form since forever. I figured I might as well get it ironed down first for that reason.

Kaine held himself back from springing to the attack as Jair demonstrated some Form 2 flair, a form that the old Mando was familiar with. He hadn't been a force-sensitive for decades, but it was the form he had preferred in those days. Without the Force, it was impossible to replicate the lightsaber forms properly, and Kaine knew it.
His weapon was held in his right hand, same as Jair. Kaine held his humming black bladed weapon in his right hand, rotating it once half as much to show that he could as well as to limber up his wrist for the contest to come.
Jair was ready. Now it was time for school to begin. The lesson plan was very gentle as far as Kaine went. First, he wanted to gauge Jair's ability, and if possible, build some confidence.
"Defend yourself."
First a test. Kaine didn't need to step forward, so he simply swung the blade. A tall man, he was slightly taller than his Jedi training partner. This made his first swing, a horizontal strike from Kaine's right at the left side of Jair's head, a simple one.
The first strike was half-assed, halfhearted, and slightly slow. Kaine was wide open to any sort of counterattack. If his strike were simply blocked, the Mandalorian would follow up with second strike, same angle of attack, but directed at the left side of Jair's waist.
For now Kaine really wanted to see what Jair would do. The young Jedi Knight was a blank slate to the Mandalorian Field Marshal, who wanted to assess just who and what he was dealing with. Then he would know what to teach.

OOC: Ok. So I already feel like I might be overthinking this LOL. I guess I really just need to get a firmly established image in my head though. So I'm gonna try this out. And I'm gonna kind of outline my thought process here, on the thread, in OOC, as well as any questions or clarifications I might have so that if anyone else is reading it, maybe they'll glean from it too. Because I used to want to learn how to do this for the LONGEST time, but, had the hardest time picturing the moves in my head. And that was even just trying to read other peoples duels let alone try it on my own. So.
Ok outlining:
- I have my lightsaber in my right hand... extended out in the Makashi salute. - Kaine has the Darksaber in his right hand, and he is making a swing at my head. But this means it's coming up to MY left. As you described...
So I need to get my lightsaber over to my left but it's extended out to my right and honestly I'm struggling to think of how I would describe a block beyond just saying *Jair blocks with his lightsaber*, because that would be a very boring response and probably wouldn't cut it... to account for this, I wonder if I should rethink the tactic of blocking entirely... ok. How is this? Going back IC now:
Standing somewhere between five foot five and five foot seven, Jair was fairly short. As the hum of the darksaber swinging reverberated like an angry wasp approaching his left ear, he swiftly ducked into a semi-crouch but with enough flexibility to allow him to step back as he lifted his right arm in the hopes of their sabers clashing.
OOC: It was the only thing I could think to do. Is it too much movement though? Is it described in enough detail?

OOC : Youre fine. "Jair swung his blade up to interecpt Kaines" is fine. AND YOU DID YOUR FIRST POST CUT! Sometimes these things can be overcomplicated unnecessarily.
Their two blades engaged, and locked just for a moment as Jedi Orange stopped and held Mandalorian Black. The energy blades crackled and hissed as they came together. Standing six feet and seven inches, Kaine had the height, and being slightly overweight and wearing beskar'gam, the weight advantage.
Kaine then pulled back, disengaging his own blade from the saber lock, and swung again, this time at Jair's waist.
Jair should be able to block fairly simply. Kaine was curious to see how and when the Jedi might choose to counterattack. For now he'd press simple attacks, but if Jair continued to only defend, Kaine would press harder to see what he could bring out of his trainee.

OOC: With Kaines permission I'm pasting (yet reformatting for visuals) this convo from the Discord chat, as it has good advice in it.
"Jair: I'm still confused where the cut is Kaine Australis: It wasnt much, i put an addendum that if you blocked Kaine would hit you again Jair: OH... I assumed that would be covered in your next post Kaine Australis: Yeh its ok I tend towards "Kaine does X and if Y happens, he does Z" kind of posts Jair: I just felt like if I went with both of those moves in one post, I would have ended up assuming how you did it, and I didn't want to risk calling your moves for you Kaine Australis: Dont over think it. Just do stuff and we'll work through any mistakes that happen. Like in your first post, Yes, Jair has just done a Dooku, But It takes no time at all to bring that saber up to block, So it matters not where the blade was in the previous post. To come from where it is, low and to the right, to block a blow high and left, takes fractions of a second. All about how much time an action takes, and if youre unsure, just act it out yourself, sounds silly, takes seconds, helps a lot. Have fun with the post, talk through Jair's thoughts, previous experiences, and stuff"
For anyone reading this, the part from the above chat that I have highlighted in bold, I have been told by no less than FOUR people who did GBA duels this week, that they would act out moves themselves IRL. More and more I am getting the feeling that this is just something that is a critical tool to getting good at this. I shall have to find my plastic lightsaber. I've got it somewhere in the house. LOL
As their sabers briefly clashed, Jair tried to get a general feel for Kaine's swing strength. He got the sense that though he wasn't using his full strength, this Kaine had a strong arm. He was a bigger man than Jair as well. As a Jedi, Jair had been trained to always be in tune with the Force when dueling or sparring. But when fighting against an opponent with more strength, even more so, the Force must be a crucial ally. Jair felt the weight of the engagement leave as Kaine swung his Darksaber around to Jair's other side.
Jair's saber was extended, being held out on his right side and slightly above his head, but now that Kaine had disengaged and swung towards Jair's left side, the Knight needed to defend himself again. So he moved his arm closer to his torso with surprisingly limited shoulder movement, and rotated his wrist to where now, his lightsaber hilt and saber hand would be directly in front of his crotch. OOC: I don't know how to make that sound... not awkward. But if I word it any other way, crucial positional details will be lost. lol With the proper rotation of his wrist, the lightsaber blade was now at an angle properly defending his left side, and if Kaine would meet his blade again, this time, the Jedi intended to rise from his semi crouched position to meet Kaine's stance.

Jair successfully blocked Kaine's attack again. The Mandalorian was still assessing the Jedi and while taking him seriously, wasn't yet ready to take the duel to the next level. Their blades locked together again for a moment, snapping and hissing, orange against red.
"Now then." said Kaine.
The Mandalorian stepped back a pace as he disengaged, and took up a two handed grip, swinging back and then stepping forward again with a full powered overhand strike directed to cut Jair in half directly down the middle from crown of skull all the way down.
OOC : Ok. Decision time. If you do nothing, you die.
Remember that you have Force powers. You can speed up and help Jair block, and you can also shove Kaine back before he strikes. You have many options.
Your opponent is now committed to action. This is where you can take advantage of that commitment and counter, if you wish.

OOC: More great advice from the discord chat:
Jair: The main thing I'm wondering is, how realistic would it be to attempt to block this strike? Kaine obviously has a raw strength bonus here. But... Jair could reinforce his counter with the Force, right? Like, use the Force to meet the strength of his opponent? Kaine Australis: 100% realistic. The force of jair's swing can equalise the force of kaines swing. And you can throw the Force in for help if you want to outmuscle Kaine. Hell you could just hold Kaine in place if you wanted Jair: Oh but that is so overdone lol Kaine Australis: It's an option. The intent with this round was to make you have to use Jair's abilities [Archivist] Admy: Also with sabers, you don't get leverage or weapon mass to help, which neutralizes a lot of the benefits of being physically stronger Kaine Australis: ^ this [Archivist] Admy: Sabers aren't like cleavers (one reason why many of my characters used solid weapons for dueling as well). They are more like rigid foam tubes of doom. Jair: So, to get an idea of this, upper body strength does have SOME factor, but it's just, significantly minimized due to the weightless nature of the lightsaber blade? Kaine Australis: Yup. Close enough as to make no difference between a Wook and a human. Or a 2 meter tall mando in armor [Archivist] Admy: For additional reference, the saber itself fights against attempts to swing it too hard, due to the gyroscopic effects. Kaine Australis: Also this. Its why its a bad weapon for an NFU [Archivist] Admy: So while you can swing away like a meth head with a baseball bat, the strikes will actually be slower and weaker than someone using finesse to work with the effects of the blade. Kaine Australis: ^ this. Kaine "This why me use ax."
Jair moved his right hand, his saber hand, closer to himself by simply lowering his elbow, and ever so slightly rotating his shoulder to now hold the lightsaber directly in front of him, though at a slight angle back in anticipation of Kaine's strike. The lightsaber hilt would now be in front of his face with the orange blade protecting his head. He moved his left hand to grip his lightsaber with a two-handed grip, while also stepping forward with his right foot and focusing and centering himself within the Force as he made each of these moves with the intention of blocking the strike that was coming towards him.

Kaine watched approvingly as Jair moved swiftly and surely to block his strike. He was slightly relieved that he hadn't bisected the younger man, but he'd not expected a Jedi to simply stand there and die. The black blade of the Darksaber crackled as it was met strongly by Jair's orange glowing lightsaber. Kaine held firm, locking their blades together by pressing downward.
"Excellent. Excellent."
Pushing hard, Kaine measured Jair's own return force, feeding back against his own. His intention here was to trap the Jedi. If he could get Jair to push back hard, then he would have the opening he needed for a little surprise trick.
Jair would feel Kaine pressing hard against his block, trying to force the orange blade backward.
OOC : Not much action from me here, but im setting something up. Doing what Kaine wants you to do is usually bad.

OOC: More good advice from chat:
Jair: Kaine. How much information can I use from your post? Like, if it were in universe Kaine Australis: All of it Be aware of tricks and traps. What does Jair know? That Kaine is pushing hard against his block. What should Jair infer from this? That Kaine is doing this for reasons other than trying to show off. In a duel it's generally not a good idea to do the expected. The expected thing in this situation would be to push back hard
My guess is in universe this answer might differ from situation to situation, and person to person, but that's all part of the spirit of collaboration. In this case Kaine has given me the green light to use all information he's given in his post. I'm still going to try to thread the needle a bit, and use what my character would know, instead of just what I know. But this does give me quite a bit to work with.
Kaine was applying some pretty heavy pressure. But Jair was not the offensive type, and he sensed that simply reinforcing this clash with his own focus might be a waste of energy. Regardless he had to do something or else he would be struck by his own lightsaber being pushed back towards his head.
Jair ducked his head, pulling his torso back ever so slightly by bending his knees, and moved his head to the left, while keeping the sabers locked, but without applying any extra pressure. As the lightsabers would inevitably continue momentum in his direction, Jair also did a slight side step to his left so that now the momentum of the blades would not be moving towards him, but instead, to his left, where he could hopefully maneuver the blade with more freedom after discerning what Kaine would do next, now that he had gotten himself out of the way.
OOC: Ok, I hope that those details made sense? Essentially I'm still locking sabers with Kaine, but I'm letting him have the momentum of the clash, and instead of pushing back any more, I'm side-stepping to get myself out of the way.

Kaine smiled behind his helmet as he felt the pressure change, Jair had not simply increased force. Soon enough, the Jedi managed to extricate himself from the stalemated saberlock, and got free. The Mandalorian straightened, pulled his own blade back, and switched it off, the black blade hissing back into the hilt.
"Good. Now, attack me."
The Mandalorian took two steps backward and stood relaxed, lightsaber hilt held loosely in his right hand. The ball was in Jair's court, and he could strike freely however he chose. Kaine would react accordingly.
Eager to see what Jair would do, Kaine waited patiently. He'd been training others to fight almost as long as he'd been a fighter. He'd been thrust into the role as a bare faced teenager, and had kept it up for nearly five decades. Still, he could be surprised on occasion, and he hoped the young Jedi Knight would provide some sport. Making Jair a better fighter was Kaine's duty, and that was one of the few things he took very seriously.
There were many options. Were Kaine in Jair's position with Jair's talents, he would use the Force to snatch Kaine's weapon before pressing his attack with two lightsabers against none. Kaine doubted such underhanded tactics would occur to most Jetiise.
OOC : Excellent. By your actions you avoid the trap.
Now lets change it up. You go on the attack.
Attacking and having the initiative means you can set the tone. You can do one attack, or two or even three, if you chain them together smoothly. Its always best to offer some kind of "If this works, then this" caveat to let your opponent follow what your attack intent is.
The more you try to do, the more likely some of your actions will be cut off by your opponents reaction. This is a post-cut. Something thats difficult to get right.

Attack? This was not something Jair was used to. He dueled defensively. But, he was here to learn after all. He reached out in the Force and honed in his senses... Kaine was gripping his Darksaber very loosely. That much he could sense. It was almost as if Kaine was giving him the opportunity to take it with the Force. In the real world, Jair would take it right then and there. But he would not proceed to attack an unarmed opponent with two weapons. Rather, he would try to use his newfound advantage to negotiate peace. But that would do no good in a training exercise. Still... he couldn't help but wonder...
Jair used the Force to attempt to rattle the Darksaber that Kaine was holding loosely, with the intention of feigning an attempt to pull it away from him using the Force, but, stopping short of actually pulling it away, Jair then firmly gripped his own lightsaber with both hands and swung it widely from his left side in an arc out in front of him, focusing intently on an attempt to strike Kaine's Darksaber hilt. He stepped forward with his right foot as he did so.
OOC: Decided to split into action text this time, just to feel it out. The action text feels like it could be more detailed but, I also feel like the saber swing is fairly easy to visualize without going into excess? Correct me if I'm wrong. I know in GBA specifically, more detail is usually the typical MO.
