I'd like to introduce to the community at large a concept I've been tossing around to generate some more styles of RP in the Journal of the Whills.
It's an RP game designed to decentralize creative control of the writing process and hopefully create a new type of experience on the site!
Read the rules below, and if you find yourself intrigued, please note that I'm making a demo using this system right now in the Active Storylines. You can feel free to just jump right in and give it a go, if you'd like!
I would also love to hear feedback on the system.
Create by Case
Game Overview:
The object of Create by Case is to create an RP story, with a twist. In normal RP, you as the author have final authority on the decisions being made. In Create by Case, the decisions are up to the collective basis of players, who vote on polls for what to do next. The next person to post is then tasked to carry out the will of the people, and correspondingly craft a new post with a new set of options at the end of it. The game will evolve in unpredictable ways through the natural progression of circumstances, and by the end, players will have embarked on a uniquely collaborative RP journey!
How to Play:
Create by Case is a simple variation on RP writing. Anyone can play, by voting in the polls and/or by writing posts in fulfillment of the popular choice. There is no limit to the number of times, sequential or non-sequential, a player can write posts in a Create by Case RP. There is no formal process for reservation of making the next post. In the event that multiple players wish to make the next post, the official method for determining the next post is earliest chronological submission of an acceptable post.
There are two criteria that must be met for an acceptable post to be made.
1. The post must adhere to the popular choice selected by the results of the previous poll (minimum 5 votes),
and
2. The post must include a link to a poll with options for the action to be taken in the next post (minimum 3 choices).
It is suggested to include proof of (1.) via embedding images in the post. Poll-Maker is a free-to-use website recommended for uniformity and ease of poll generation.
Tips:
It may be helpful to think of the Create by Case system as a Choose Your Own Adventure story being written in real time by multiple authors.
Your poll possibilities should be written while trying to mask your agenda or preference as much as possible. Developing one well-described option versus three clearly uninteresting options makes the game less fun for everyone.
You should write poll options with a vague plan in mind for any of the options being chosen, even though you may not wind up being the one making the next post.
Disclosures:
These rules are subject to revision at any time.
These rules for playing a Create by Case game can be freely used by any member on this forum.
If you do use Create by Case rules for an RP, I request acknowledgment in the form of "(a Create by Case RP)" added to the end of the RP thread title.
Additional rules may be imposed on specific stories being written in the Create by Case framework. Authors of additional rules retain the rights to their own rule sets.
