Brentaal was a small, dry planet with a diameter of 11,242 kilometers whose eight continents were separated by small, salty oceans. Most available land on the wealthy world was covered with starports, industrial facilities, and thriving trade markets.

Brentaal IV had found purpose and business with the First Order. Though any attempts at dissidence were eradicated by the forces of the First Order and the diligent Imperial Intelligence, life continued and so did business. Its industries were dedicated to the war effort and its trade thrived with good commercial links to the neighboring Imperial systems. Peace and security under the First Order had its benefits.

First Order Planetary Governor Ivo Prinz had thought, when introduced to House Kallea's eldest daughter, that the noble house's patriarch was making a somewhat transparent attempt to gain favor from him, hoping to garner more favorable permits or other such nonsense Ivo knew would be useful in the Trade Hall. The daughter in question, Valeriya, was three years younger than Ivo, proved in the course of their first introduction to be charismatic, engaging, witty, and rather fetching company, and so Ivo, cognizant of the advantages to be had in gaining the favor of one of the more influential noble Houses, had found little reason to spurn the Kallea family's subtle overtures for him to court his daughter so that, he was quite sure, they might court his favor.
Much to Ivo's surprise, and despite his initial determination to avoid becoming emotionally invested in the relationship with Valeriya, he found that the more time he spent with her, the more taken with her he became; their interests aligning so much so that they rarely needed to compromise when it came to what activities they would engage in, and their enjoyment of one another's company, so far as he could tell, genuine. After a weekend spent with Valeriya and her family at one of House Kallea's scenic and stately vacation homes, Ivo having come to feel during the course of the weekend that his concerns that Valeriya's affections were in any way contrived or transactional in nature were unfounded, Ivo reluctantly takes his leave of Valeriya when contacted by his policy director, Atieno Elhassan, with the news that he was needed in Cormond to settle a dispute between two feuding noble houses. Atieno fills Ivo in on the details of the dispute during the shuttle flight back to Cormond, but Ivo finds his mind wandering back to Valeriya more often than not, a fact that Atieno is not blind to, and so she also makes a point of ensuring that Ivo understands all of the potential ramifications involved in the various ways to settle the dispute, going so far, as she often finds she must, as to subtly convey to Ivo which of the solutions she feels is the wisest course of action.

Ferro Moretti, an eighteen year old native of Brentaal IV, did not enlist in the First Order's Stormtrooper Corps out of a desire for adventure, or of love for the First Order, its ideals or its emperor, but out of a desire to take advantage of the educational opportunities that enlisting would provide him; the youngest son of a large family that often only barely managed to keep just above the poverty line, Ferro, who dreamt of becoming a doctor, feared that a medical education would forever be beyond him if he did not trade years of service for the tuition fees he will need to pay in order to realize his dream.
Despite knowing that he would undoubtedly be subjected to propaganda, subtle or heavy handed, during the course of his training, and feeling that knowing would insulate him from it, Ferro found more and more as he progressed further into his training that the ideals of the First Order made sense to him, and were in fact worth fighting for, so much so that he even found himself entertaining the idea of, once he completed medical school, returning to service in the Stormtrooper Corps.
