First off, Welcome 2.0 and you are epic. Now that that has been taken care of, I am of the opinion that 1.5 IC universe boards should be brought over. Now, I am aware that the whills have been unable to do it the high tech fancy way and don't have the time to brute force it. This is why I am sending out a call for all willing volunteers to aid in a beautiful project. THE 1.5 ARCHIVE PROJECT. The goal of the project is this: copy as much of the 1.5 universe boards onto 2.0 using as few posts as possible. To this end I am calling for the following: - Volunteers to go page by page, quoting each post and copying the BBCode text data (into .txt documents labeled by "region_planet_area_area_etc"). Volunteers will be assigned specific threads to archive.
- Volunteers to compile the information into archive posts (with the number of quotes per post depending on what the character limit here is for posts). Secondary volunteers to check that the quotes are in the right order would also be nice, given enough people
- An "Archive" account to be created that will post all the gathered text (for a uniform appearance).
The Archive posts would be posted in the closest approximate thread located on 2.0 (with areas that did not transfer directly being posted in open terrain). For Example, the Verias Morta thread on Geonosis would be posted in open terrain of Geonosis. This would however require the whills to create a group on the old site that is able to post (so that they can use the quote feature to full effect) on 1.5. Hopefully, with enough volunteers the whills will agree (also, the more people volunteer, the less work each will have to do). -TA

So are we not supposed to post on here until this archive thing gets done? It gets confusing and frustrating enough when two SL's are running concurrently in one thread, and it's going to be worse if a post from today is separated from another post from today by four or five mile-long archive posts from three years ago. In my opinion, it would just be better to leave the old posts where they are or archive them somewhere else. It gets really complicated if you try and archive them here in the general RP threads.
Tosses two creds in the jar.

I can definitely understand wanting to bring over the posts from 1.5, but....man that's a LOT of posts to bring over and even if you have a lot of volunteers, that's going to take FOREVER. to do. Why archive them here anyway when 1.5 in of itself IS an archive anyway?
Two cents.

Agreed, just leave the site open as "read only" kind of like the app on Facebook is. Unless 1.5 is costing money to keep maintaining in which case yes, something should be done. A lot of awesome work went into the boards on that site, it would be a shame to lose it all.

First: 1.5 does cost money to keep up. There is therefore a need to try and save as much as possible. Second: no, this will not stop you from RPing. The Posts are likely to be infrequent enough that it should be easy to skip over. As I noted in the first post, one archive post might be anywhere from a few really big 1.5 post quotes to an entire page of shorter 1.5 post quotes (depending on what the cap limit for a post is here). Second (part two): well yes, it would be nice if we could get the whills to make an "archive" topic (one thread per planet depending on how active the planet was might work), but that seems unlikely. Third: thanks for the credits.

A single archive topic per planet seems like a much better idea than mashing the archives in with the new stuff. Sure it could get a little messy without the separate threads, but it would be a lot less messy than throwing them in randomly between new posts. And besides, it won't hurt to ask for them (I just really don't like the idea of cramming old and new stuff together in a mad mashup of randomly timed posts. Keeping the old stuff separate from the new is far more appealing).

The Whills are aware of this thread, and are giving the idea careful consideration. At this time, I am not endorsing or prohibiting the idea. There are pros and cons that must be weighed.
A few quick comments and warnings:
1) We did not intend to move the data, nor are we asking anyone to wait while it is moved. Our intention in opening the site was to allow people to get on with their storylines. The old site will be archived in it's present format or another format.
2) The majority of the cost of the old site came from the volume of traffic it was seeing, not the size of the data. After a few months, the archives won't see a large amount of traffic, so the expense should be greatly reduced.
3) It may not be legal for you to blanketly copy other players' posts to this site, due to technicalities in the ProBoards Terms of Service. Refer to the sections on User Content and on Intellectual Property, if you're curious.
4) I should note that copying your own posts (or your friends' -- with explicit permission) shouldn't be an issue -- so if you want to go back to the start of your current storyline and re-post some stuff, or something like that, go right ahead.
5) If, after consideration, the Whills were to decide that the data can and should be copied over, I can provide that data to you in a MUCH quicker, more useful format than can be obtained by copying and pasting individual posts. From a technical standpoint, I could grab each entire thread out of the database and format it as needed.

Thanks for the heads up chill. I will still be taking volunteers on this thread in case you need some brute force labor once you & the other whills decide on a course of action.
