Cerar Kandosii - Hyllyard City
Preparations for the Byss operation were nearly complete, after much work, heavy construction efforts, and the massing, arming and preparation of the beings who were setting off to the Deep Core, they were almost ready to depart. Kaine felt the credits were well spent, though he'd been surprised at the sum total his warriors had been able to spend on kit, he didn't begrudge them access to the finest weapons and armor they could find.
He had committed a significant portion of the Clan's military strength to the operation, including most of the commando corps, half the fleet, almost all the ground vehicles, and a large chunk of the elite troops. He had also necessarily committed most of the best and brightest of his command personnel to the mission. His own children were the glaring omissions, and they had all been kept out of the security loop.
Kaine's plan to head off any objections had been to wait until after the mission had launched to inform them. König would understand, and would be too busy with his General's stars to object. Amaranth would likewise understand, though she wouldn't like it. Marit wouldn't object to being kept out of the loop, given her own responsibilities on Commenor. Reyn's objections would be muted given his own imminent court martial, and Vevut would just have to live with his father not wishing his youngest son to be part of a dangerous mission. None of them would like being kept out of things, but they'd all have to accept the fait accompli their father presented them with. He'd deal with any fallout if and when he made it back.
The Old Boar was under no illusions, his plan was ambitious, risky, and dangerous. Even if everything went according to plan, they would be facing overwhelming odds, they would be significantly outnumbered, and they would, even when reinforced, be outmatched by the First Order's military and their Yuuzhan Vong allies. Only by performing to their very best standards would Clan Australis survive. Kaine was putting everything on the line for what might well be his last fight. All-in, or near enough as made no matter. Few enough of the Aliit remained on Myrkr, with the bulk of the commandos and elites with their Field Marshal, ready to resist, and bite.

It was good that Captain Orona was not the type to change his mind on a whim. The Alor's orders were what had placed the RV station in jeopardy, and his orders were clear. Orona had to stick to his plan if he were to gain anything useful from this engagement, and thus have something with which to mollify Kaine if about any damage to the waystation. Allspark and Abrogator had both cleared the station and were moving away from it. The droidbombers obediently dogged the enemy Coralskippers, which were taking full advantage of the Mandalorians' restraint, and strafing the waystation. Behind the two outbound cruisers, fire and escaping gas burst from the waystation in places where it was hit hard. Its shields and hull weren't up to combat standards, and the fiery projectiles the Vongese used cut deep into its superstructure. Hull breaches and system damage were evident in the external damage, though the station could do little except rely on its military escort to protect and defend it.
Aboard Allspark, Orona didn't budge from his plan. Aboard Abrogator, Helix likewise, held firm to the other Captain's plan, despite the waystation being able to do very little to protect itself. They had to wait. The gunners knew their business, and the droids would do what they were programmed to do. Helix had ordered that any gunner who hit the station would forfeit a month's pay. He had no doubt they would produce their best efforts.Orona's voice was carried to his ship and to Helix's via the PA. "All gunners track your targets but hold fire. Borks prepare a concussion barrage. Anyone who hits the station forfeits a month's pay." Helix couldn't help but smile. The plan was simple and elegant. Box the fighters into an area with concussion missile blasts, and then tear that area apart with turbolaser fire. The skips were fast, agile, and tough. But they couldn't be in two places at once; the Mandalorians aimed to fill all the places with fire at once. They just had to wait for the right moment. If the turbolasers didn't get them, a full volley of missiles from the bombers would. Then the Mando'ade would pick up what was left, a trophy for their Alor. The moment came.FIRE! Orona thundered, chopping his right hand down in an unconscious gesture. Allspark and Abrogator's turbolasers opened up in sheets of glowing green flame. The coordinated volleys of the cruisers were timed to perfection with a mass volley from the surviving droidbombers, concussion missiles streaming out riding fire from their launchers as the twenty one surviving bombers fired on the five Yorik-et, bracketing them. It was an overwhelming amount of fire, concentrated to close in each enemy craft and disable or destroy it.Nem Yin

There was still much work to be done, and Kaine didn't intend to fail in preparation for what well might be his last great battle. He'd shuttled up to orbit to meet with one of the key people in his plan, General Rhael Nebus. She commanded the Copad Legion, the Clan's elite troopers. It was from this unit in particular that Kaine found ready and capable recruits for his Commandos. She would lead five thousand of the legion to Byss, and it was Kaine's job to be ready when she arrived.
General Nebus had quarters on Mandalore's moon of Concordia, and Kaine met her there without escort, most of the commandos still downside on Manda'yaim or aboard Carnifex in orbit, getting ready. Kaine brought a bottle, though Rhael insisted they drink from her store of Hapan wine. Kaine relented, and the two of them sat opposite across the General's desk, sipping the vintage. The two officers talked for hours, comparing notes on the deployment plan, and going over contingencies. Kaine's commandos would secure a landing site, and then move to engage the enemy in skirmishes, using mobility and stealth to strike, while avoiding the enemy's main strength. Rhael would bring the numbers and the heavy vehicles, the artillery, and one of the Clan's secret weapons. The last were going to be a most unpleasant surprise for those in Byss's ruling city.
Nebus and her elite soldiers would form the backbone of the army that would take and hold Byss. Not enough to overwhelm the enemy with numbers, even reinforced, they would rely on skill and firepower to make up the disadvantage. Few if any of the army, even the commando corps, had experience fighting the Yuuzhan Vong, but there were detailed accounts available, including Kaine's own firsthand experience. Measures had been taken where possible to put that hard-won experience to strategic and tactical practicality.
There was no time or resources to modify starfighter weapons to overcome Dovin Basals, nor to research and develop specific anti-vong technologies, but there were still practical steps that could be taken. Educating the officers and troops about what they were likely to face, including examples of biotechnology they might encounter, as well as tactics that had proven successful. The use of droids to provoke and antagonize the intergalactic invaders was taken into account. Those droids involved in the mission were programmed able to speak insults and blasphemy in the Yuuzhan Vong language, loudly and often. With most of their concerns satisfied, or at the very least addressed, the two officers rose and shook hands, meeting eyes. Both of them knew what they were getting into, and both of them would be sharing the danger with their troops. Nebus remained to carry on with her preparations, while the Field Marshal returned to his commandos. Very soon, they would be shipping out, and the war, which had already turned from scouting to skirmish, would begin in earnest.

Repost for corrections. A single Lightstealth-18 dropped from hyperspace well outside the normal transit lanes, so far out from the system that the Byss star was lost among the bright clusters of protostars and clusters of the Deep Core. Navigating the region was dangerous, and the Byss Run left the approach too exposed, so the stealth craft used a secondary hyperlane to get close to the system.
Scanning was carried out, while the crew of repurposed protocol droids kept the hyperdrive spooled up ready for the next jump. The important scanning work was carried out by the Lightstealth's crew, ensuring that local space was clear of enemy activity. They were able to recieve and retransmit data from the probe droids inside the system, and relay all the information back to Clan command. There were now several probes inside the Beshqek system, and multiple Lightstealth-18 craft standing off well outside the system in deep space, giving Kaine and his allies a picture of the system and its defences. The probes were automata, and most of the spy craft were crewed by repurposed protocol droids, save for the third one, which was crewed. Under a Captain Irasca, the four-being crew were experienced scouts, and not at all happy with their dangerous and risky mission. Does the grand poobah know what hes ordering us to do? Mack grumbled to Bo, his fellow sensor operator. Grand poobah was an unkind nickname for the Alor Kaine Australis who had ordered the scouting operation so deep into the deep core.Don't start. Bo said, but Mack ignored him, plowing on regardless. I mean, it's not just the collapsed stars, nebulae, supernovae, pulsars, quasars, and gravitic anomalies. Mack went on. There are uncharted rogue planets, and let's not forget, wandering black holes. Bo, and the rest of the crew all knew perfectly well the hazards to which they were being exposed, but Mack was vocal in his displeasure. Even if we map things out right, things can go wrong. The worst part of it was, Mack wasn't exaggerating. Hyperspace navigation anywhere in the Deep Core was a tricky business, and very dangerous, even when you were as careful as seasoned scouts tried to be. So far they'd only lost probes to the dangers of this area of space. The scouts hoped it stayed that way, and that the Alor didn't push his luck with the risks he was taking.
The three lightstealths were marking the potential ingress points for Kaine's ship, the Carnifex, to make a cloaked approach to Byss, though they did not know anything beyond their orders to maintain a watch.
Quietly, their craft held its position well away from the Beshqek system. They were further out than their most generous estimates of the enemy's sensor range. At such a range their own sensors couldn't hope to scan Byss or anything inside the system. Their job for now was to watch deep space, to relay data from the probes to command, and to await instructions.

The curse of interstellar communications was that those on the other side of the galaxy tended to fail to consider the situation. Orders had come in from high command, and neither Captain Orona nor Captain Helix liked the orders for beans. Orona took the lead, knowing that he at least wouldn't have to explain himself to Helix, the other man had to be cursing the orders the same as he. Capture, not kill. And with what? He asked himself. Quickly, he ordered the droidbombers to hold fire, and move to a containment and herd pattern. That would give him the time to figure this shambles out. A glance at the tactical holodisplay showed Allspark and Abrogator, the two light cruisers, moving away from the station to which they had been docked. The Vong fighters, Coralskippers, Orona corrected himself, were dangerous. He analyzed their attack pattern, even as several of the droidbombers exploded.Organic pilots would have near mutinied at the order to hold fire, especially Mandalorian pilots, especially against the Yuuzhan Vong. Droids, thankfully, didn't question or disobey, even when the orders made no tactical sense. The bombers flew evasive, working to cover one another, and to try and keep the enemy from running away while the cruisers came away from the station to bring their weaponry into line. Orona saw combining his bombers with the turbolasers of his cruisers as the best chance of success. He discarded the other options; Gravity bombs were as much a danger to his own ships in such close quarters, and the ion guns would do no good against Vongese. His plan was to coordinate a barrage from the two cruisers with a volley of missiles from the droidbombers, and trap the Yuuzhan Vong each in an inescapable field of destruction. Then they could pick up what was left.
Instructions went to the gunners on both cruisers, and to the droidbombers, to maintain their resolve, and to hold fire until each enemy craft was bracketed. Then they would unleash a withering barrage and end this skirmish in one swift stroke...Nem Yin

To say that Kaine was in a foul mood was an understatement, he'd been briefed on the information coming out of the Deep Core, and then before he'd had a chance to digest the details and process them, word had come of an attack on the RV point. By the shabla Yuuzhan Vong. The old enemy.
The old boar made his way down the back streets of Keldabe, drunk, but doing his best to remain upright and mobile.
He'd ensured that word had been spread to the rest of those going on the Byss operation, they deserved to know what they were getting into. "There will be no private Vong hunts, no avenging the Alor's honour." He had told them all. They were going to do a job, and the makeup of the enemy didn't change what they had to do.
Kaine himself made few changes and adjustments, except to order the forces currently engaged to secure intact any Yuuzhan Vong or their biotechnology as was possible.
While he walked, his HUD ran through in front of him more than a few requests from the Captains General who were all going on the mission. He could safely ignore all the requests to be assigned to priority Vong hunts. Those for specialized kit and equipment, he gave more attention to.
Appropriately, all the 6th wanted was extra ammunition. Kaine gave silent thanks to Kad for Captain-General Bronzi. A simple man with simple tastes, who made war like it was a challenge to the war deity himself. Approved. The 2nd and 9th requested additional shield generators and heavy weapons. Likewise approved. Riva Shiel wanted some things he'd never heard of, and he decided, probably couldn't get hold of in time. Unable to approve, he sent back, regretfully. Lastwise, the request, and by far the lengthiest, was from the 7th. Marbo hadn't bothered couching his request in prose, and had just send a list, a very long list of kit.
Even the experienced Kaine took a moment to wonder at the scale and variety of the kit to which the 7th had made request. Mines, explosives, lasers, more mounted weaponry, more droids, flechette weapons, even a stock of lightknives. He thought back to his own battles with the Yuuzhan Vong, and decided there was no such thing as too much dakka. Approved. After finishing the list, Kaine did a quick calculation and estimated that each of the 7th would be lugging hundreds of kilograms of kit into combat. They were not going in unprepared.
Lastly, Kaine saw to his own kit, those of the Jare'rami'kade all pre-approved to requsition anything they set their hearts upon. They were an expensive unit to outfit, but they were always well worth the credits. His own armour was well prepared, restored to full functionality. He'd packed in his sidearms, his blades, and his rifle. His Field Marshal's baton was now a regular part of his kit, and he'd carry that into battle.
Once more, unto the breach.

RV Point Alpha sat at what they thought was a safe, quiet point in deep space. It was a glorified supply dump, but they were soon to be awakened to the danger. Both Abrogator and Allspark were docked with the station, which was unarmed, being merely a cargo handling platform. The two cruisers, however, were warships, and not so blind or unprotected as the station. Sensor ranges weren't all they should be in the Deep Core, and whatever magic shenanigans the Vong used for hyperspace travel didn't give off the telltale cronau radiation of regular hypedrives, but the incoming fighters were detected and identified. Both Captain Orona and Captain Helix had recieved the intel ping about Yuuzhan Vong activity, and neither had been scarce able to believe it. They both believed it now, each summoned to their bridges as the alert klaxons blared, bringing both vessels to battle stations.Helix took his orders from Orona, who was the senior captain among the pair. He sent a signal to Clan Command that RV Point Alpha had come under attack, and that the attackers were Vongese. Orona, already on Allspark's bridge, took the lead in defence of their outpost. "Take us out, signal Abrogator to pull back and cover our rear. All weapons prepare to fire. Deploy the Borks."Both Nynir-class cruisers deployed their Bork Bombers against the incoming threat. Twelve of the craft from Allspark, and twelve from Abrogator, making a full two squadrons of droidbombers to face the incoming strike. If the enemy made it through the bomber strike, they'd face the fire of the light cruiser. They'd have to get through the bombers, and both cruisers to get at the station, something neither Captain was willing to countenance.Nem Yin

Extensive works continued at MandalArms to not only continue the company's regular output for its commercial and retail sales, but to provide the necessary infrastructure and logistical support for the Byss operation. Though most of the workers and company officers knew only that they were dealing with a larger than usual workload, they were being paid bonuses, and knew not to ask questions.
Heavy artillery and large battle automata came out of the factories to be loaded onto transports. Alongside these came ranks of armoured vehicles, war droids, and speeders, as well as a wealth of ammunition and explosives. Even the energy cells for everything from glowrods to artillery pieces were manufactured on site and distributed to where they were needed. With excellent supply lines, and a ready infrastructure, as well as inside access to the galactic arms markets, MandalArms was well capable of building nearly anything that was required of it.
Anything save for the largest constructions such as starships, which were built in orbit, could be and was produced in Keldabe. The company had works and complexes on other worlds, most notably Myrkr, but Keldabe was the headquarters of the company, and where most of its resources were concentrated.

Oh no.
Director of Intelligence Cerani came across to the coordinator's shoulder. She didn't ask what was up. She could already see the screen. Oh no indeed. The Alor was going to go ballistic, and there was no way for them to not tell him.
There were Yuuzhan Vong at Byss. Carry on.
Cerani sighed a deep Twi'lek sigh. This was not going to be a fun conversation. She moved off to her own station to contact Kaine, and update the Alor on the situation.

Navigating through hyperspace was not, as someone once said, like dusting crops. You could fly right through a supernova or a black hole, and that would end your trip really quick. The Deep Core of the galaxy was even more dangerous, with anomalies, star clusters, and protostars as well as the near masses of so many nebulae and singularities that navigation was extremely hazardous.
The probes dispatched from the Tython system did not fare too well in their attempts to navigate their way through the Deep Core. Of the fifty that had set out, only five remained to survive the approach towards Beshqek. Of those, two were heavily damaged, and unable to carry out their mission.
Unable to make any more hyperspace jumps, the damaged two moved out on sublight courses, doing their best to add to the charts of local space, though still a light-week away from Byss, too far away to do any real good. The three intact surviving probes made for their final jumps, and left the broken pair behind, leaping into the Beshqek system at three separate points.
The gravity wells of the system's primary star and the planets and moons dictated where they were able to emerge, each at a distinct and separate point on the edge of the outer orbit of the outermost planet.
Each began maneuvering, scanning the system and planets, cataloguing ships and installations. Hypercomm transmissions relayed the information back to the Lightstealth-18s that were keeping well away from Byss. From the scout ships, the data was compiled and sent back to Clan Intelligence, providing updated mapping and astronavigational data, as well as tactical information.
The droids assigned to the Lightstealth-18s were not programmed for too much independent thought, however, the same was not true of the Clan Australis intel coordinator who recieved the updated datapackets back on Myrkr. Bad news for the Mando'ade, and for Kaine.

Deep Space Rendezvous Point Alpha - Deep Core - Open Space
Life at the waystation located in deep space that the Mando'ade of Clan Australis had designated RV Point Alpha was routine, and fairly boring. The station was spartan, consisting mainly of cargo bays and landing platforms. The few troops not assigned to cargo handling duty were bereft of anything to do.
One group of eight were not so unfortunate, though they knew their mission held the most danger, and for half of them, a guarantee that one way or another, it would be their last. The other crews and troopers had left the commandos well alone, and that suited the commandos just fine, they even kept to their squads. Breaker Squad was 2nd of the 2nd, expert spacetroopers. They were going to open a door for Manda Squad, Four of Te Ca Alore, away from the rest of their fellows, resplendent in beskar'gam of bright blues and reds. Manda Squad and Breaker Squad didn't mix well, and only the presence of the hulking and dangerous Captain Polux kept things under control. The 8th did not usually play well with others.
The cruisers Allspark and Abrogator were at anchor above the station. The eight supercommandos made for Abrogator, along with their special cargo, which they carried inside a cargo container aboard a gravsled. Abrogator's Captain, Helix, met them at the airlock. Captain Polux, ranking officer and lead of Breaker Squad, halted his commandos.
"You're all welcome aboard my ship, but I want to know what your cargo is." Helix said, in a voice that did not brook argument. The unarmored uniformed fleet captain stared up into the helmets of four power armoured beings and four more in spiked beskar'gam without fear. Polux shrugged. "A present for the First Order." Polux said. Unfortunately for him, Sergeant Brix of the 8th wasn't interested in verbal sport except for provocation. "It's a kriffing nuke." Polux turned to glare backward, but the gesture was a bit lost when both men were in full armour and helmet.
Helix matched Polux's shrug. Those are illegal. He said. Tait, next to Brix, holding the gravsled, spoke up. "Aw, i wouldn't worry about that guv. We've got all sorts of illegal shit here." He waved a disruptor pistol for emphasis. All of his fellow Night Lords carried at least one illegal and dangerous item quite openly. Subtle as a kick in the shebs, you. Said Brix. Helix frowned. "I want the damned thing stored carefully in the hold. I don't like having it on my ship." Polux nodded his agreement. Helix moved aside so that the nine of them could board his ship. The rest of the commandos moved off to see the loadmaster while Polux waited beside the Captain.
"You've been briefed on our mission, Captain?" Polux asked, looming more than a foot taller than the Nynir-class ship's Captain. Helix looked solemnly up at him. "Yes, I have. We've got quarters for you and your men. If there's anything you need." Polux shook his head. "We'll keep out of your way." Together the two of them moved off, one to see to his ship, one to his commandos. Soon enough, they would be going into the fire together. Neither man shirked from the danger or the duty that had fallen to them. It was the way.

The old and venerable Baleen-class freighter Rum Bugger creaked and croaked its way slowly through Tython space, deep in the Deep Core. On the bridge, the Captain had just been informed by his sensor officer that their scans had been completed.
Clasping his hands in his lap, the Captain gave the order to deploy their payload. Then they could get the hell out of here and back to Corellia. They'd brought along a cargo of probe droids, optimized for long range. These began to disperse from the Bugger's cavernous cargo bays.
Fifty of the droids, small but packed with sensors and propulsion and communications gear, floated out into space in their hyperdrive pods. Once they were all deployed, they ran systems checks while the heavy freighter closed its maw and made course for its own jump home.
Each droid had been preprogrammed with the latest astrogation charts for the Deep Core, and had been tasked to move out towards Byss. Those that survived would become part of Kaine's expedition's eyes and ears. It would be methodical and dangerous work, but that was what droids were for.
Rum Bugger jumped away bound for Corellia, leaving the droids behind. After they had all completed their checks, each moved off into deep space, on a separate vector. They would make their jumps and use their maps and tracking systems to avoid gravity sources, making their way slowly but surely across space towards the Beshqek system.

With its mission in Prakith local space completed, the Lightstealth-18 ceased its scanning operations, transmitted its findings via hypercomm, and began to retreat from the system. The droid crew worked efficiently, shifting power from scanners to engines and hyperdrive smoothly as the scout ship moved off. After a systems check, it jumped to lightspeed, outbound to its next target.

Preparations for Kaine's Byss mission were well underway. New fleet elements and support vessels had been constructed and fitted out, ready for service. Supplies came up to the yards from Mandalore at a rapid pace. Smaller vehicles and fightercraft were constructed downside, and then ferried up to orbit.
At the yards, the capital ships were built, and in addition, some of the larger and more massive ground vehicles. Ten extremely large constructs in addition to hundreds of large battle automata which would all be loaded onto transports and freighters to bring them into the combat zone.
Troops and their ground vehicles were all being distributed among the fleet's assault transports and heavy freighters ready for the trip to the Deep Core. In addition to the troops and vehicles, ammunition and supplies needed to be laid in to support the assault force.
