Gavin laughed as she spoke of the names and why they sounded the way they did him. Perhaps it was true, but even among the common tongue, there were still names that stood out over others. "Perhaps you are right. However, they still sound better than mine."
He watched as she finally ran her hand over his large sword. He guessed that she thought it strange at the very least that he'ed use such a large weapon. Even more absurd was the design. It seemed to be something more for display than anything. It was understandable. Sometimes he even wondered why it was designed that way. The last sword he had, which was the foundation for this one, was plain overall and a bit smaller. The most intricate next to this one was one built decades before when he was in his twenties and first finding his love for forging weapons. That one was a broadsword with a guard of a demon's skull and a different blade shape from normal.
Then she took hold of Kolk Illuminate with the claim of wanting to see it in action. It wasn't a question, not even hopeful, but spoken as if it would come to pass. He took note of the look in her eye, a completely new type of fire, one of excitement. He gave a smirk as he watched her handle it for a moment before returning it. As he did, he pressed a switch to retract the blades. "Well, I guess that'll give you a reason to come back some time. Do that and I'll give you first-hand experience at how they handle." With that, a challenge had been set.
Setting it back on the bed with the others. When she made a guess as to carrying them all, followed by the question if they were all used, he gave a slight chuckle. "I tend to carry them all, yes. It is my philosophy to be well armed and ready for any situation. True, three weapons may be enough, but I have a very particular form of Telekinetic lightsaber combat that utilizes nearly all of them at once. As for using them often, Deepstrike, Blockade, Kolk Illuminate, and the large sword are the most heavily used and cover nearly all situations on their own. And no, unfortunately, it doesn't have a name yet. The next in line would be Scadav Soulu." Lifting up the saber, he held it out for Mariah to see. Its hilt was a shadowy black chrome and was covered in ancient runes of an unknown nature to most speaking of balance and the disciplines that encompass it colored in an off-white. The pommel comes to a point like a spike, but instead of going straight together, it curved, making it seem more elegant. Four small claws emerged over the emitter and the crystal chamber was visible, showing a black crystal within. To Gavin, it was a piece of art, the most elegant lightsaber he had ever crafted.
After Mariah had taken the time to examine it, he set it back on the bed, moving to the last two. "These, however, see as little action as possible. They belonged to my daughters so I keep them in their memory." He then held them up to her. Dark Shocker was Videl's while Blazing Light was Tierany's. As he spoke of them, he made sure to emphasize which was which. Dark Shocker was in his left hand and was by far the simplest, being nearly a solid silver shaft, with a black choke near the emitter and three black rings at the bottom. Blazing Light, however, was different. Solid black, it held sapphire rinds near the emitter, a gold motif at the bottom with a curious design of the pommel, having a round disc-like structure protruding from it as if it was a mini blade that could spin and cut through people with pommel strikes.
Without grabbing it, he looked to the final hilt on the bed. "The last one isn't even usable as it lacks a crystal. It was the hilt my brother designed for the Kiffu Guardians he had created a long time ago. A mostly simple design, the part that stands out most is the seven virtues of the Guardians: Honesty, Justice, Courtesy, Compassion, Valor, Loyalty, and Honor. Just another memory to remember my brother and his legacy now long past.

Despite her attempts at reassuring Gavin regarding the names, Mariah still found him protesting. Although she didn't say anything more, the slight movement of her head and narrowed gaze upon him revealed her disappointment. Perhaps one day, she would translate their names, the essence in which they were named after, and it would make sense. The mere fact that she had discussed what she did -- she wasn't expecting it to flow as easily as it did, and that alone was enough to halt her tongue.
Locked between caution and a slowly building trust, Mariah welcomed the acceptance of challenge. She had ample reasons to return to the Academy as it stood; however, they all paled in comparison to this new one that presented itself. Her excitement delved deeper than a mere chance to prove herself, though, to be given another chance to initiate him full force. With his acceptance, it marked the chance for an actual spar, something she had been denied for too long. The faintest of smiles revealed itself on her lips, a determination burning in her crimson eyes.
When Gavin revealed that he did, in fact, carry all of them, Mariah glanced back and forth between he and the multitude of weapons twice, before her eyes settled upon him as though sizing him up. At the mention of telekinetic lightsaber combat, she said nothing and only nodded her head in understanding. A mental note she didn't want to forget, when the day came for when they would lock blades. Her attention was gathered back to the present, though, as he held out Scadav Soulu for her to see. The runes that marked all along the black chrome caught her attention, but the other design elements soon set in.
"You may say that mine have better names, but yours hold a craftsmanship above anything I could think of creating."
There was a whispering question in the back of her mind, asking about the runes and their meaning, but before she could heed those thoughts, Gavin had moved along to the last two in his collection. Mariah looked over each; however, something in her stance shifted with his explanation. While she still looked over them with the same sense of interest as all the others, she took a half step back to view them with a bit more distance. Perhaps from reverence; perhaps from the lingering guard she still kept; perhaps both. However, the odd design of the one in his right hand held her attention for a split second longer than the one in his left hand. Although she felt compelled to say something, as he had with hers, nothing came, and he carried on within her silence.
With the final hilt owned by his brother, Mariah took a moment to look it over, the same as all the others. The seven virtues and the Kiffu Guardians had sparked a curiosity, but at the mention of Justice, she could only suck in a deep breath and turn to walk away. For all of her attempts to leave the last two of hers unmentioned, it felt as though there was some enigmatic force in the background continuing to push and push and push. She felt like she had no other option but to yield to it.
Picking up her two shotos from the mix of his weapons, Mariah returned back to her pile and carefully set them down before picking up the last two -- the curved hilt sabers. "I've never once used these..." she stated quietly, her eyes glancing up to Gavin for a brief moment before returning her full attention to the gold tones of the electrum hilts. It took another beat in silence to convince herself to continue with her explanation. "I keep them in memory of my mother. They were passed to my sister who preferred Makashi, a form I shied away from, but then they ended up back in my possession when she passed. Roughly translated, their names are Justice and Mercy."
Mariah lingered by her own weapons before she picked up the six knives, attaching them back along her belt. She had a feeling their time would come in this discussion. Instead of offering the sabers out for Gavin to gather a closer look, though, she set them on the bed to reveal the simplistic elegance of the twin hilts. She took a single step back and crossed her arms over her chest, but a part of her attention was torn between the sabers and Gavin. Her discomfort was evident enough, but should he still reach for them, she wanted to be prepared to stop him.
"Much like your Deepstrike and Blockade, Iustitia carries a more of an offense aura, Miserere a defensive one... or so she claimed." Mariah breathed in deep and exhaled a sigh, steadying the doubts in her mind before continuing. "They can also be combined together into a saberstaff, a style she was very... brutal with."

Gavin couldn't help but smirk as she looked back and forth between him and his weapons at the mention carrying them all. It was amusing, to say the least. Yet, he could understand why someone would have to think it through, both in how he carried them and why. It took some work figuring out a proper method that allowed for easy access that didn't hinder his movements. He wouldn't reveal to her just yet how it was accomplished but would wait until they had their spar.
When she spoke of the craftsmanship of his sabers, there was nothing he felt the need to protest. He believed is sabers were works of art, especially Scadav Soulu and the larger sword, though he still cursed himself that it still had yet to bear a name. He really needed to get on that. Though he felt hers were just as well designed, he wasn't about to go into it as he could tell the reality of names already held light conflict in belief. "Well, I try. There is no less reason for a weapon of war to be any less beautiful and artful than relics found in a museum."
As he held out Blazing Light and Dark Shocker to her, he was a bit surprised when she stepped back. For what reason did she do so? Was it because he held them up? No, it couldn't be. When he actively handled Kolk Illumninate, she hadn't budged. Been on guard, perhaps, but she had stood her ground. So to think she would this time was rather odd. Was it because of the meaning behind them? Probably. Items that belonged to lost loved ones were held in a different regard than one's own trinkets. It was then he spoke of the Kiffu Guardian hilt, taking quick notice of her response when mentioning the virtues. Before he even had a chance to really finish, she had turned and headed back to her things. He watched as she replaced the shotos and retrieved the gold hilts. Hesitance radiated from her as she did so, revealing he desire to keep them hidden and unspoken of. When she spoke of them, the reason why became clear. They were much like his daughters: memories that he carried but never used.
Walking back over with them, he first expected her to hold them up to examine them much like the rest but instead set them on the bed. Her previous hesitance and this action were clear enough indications that they were extremely precious to her and didn't want him to touch them. He respected this wish as he examined them from afar. Just a couple things to add to the list of similarities. Items of memory, weapons that functioned with a similar purpose. What else would they find? As she finished her words, he finally spoke, making a strange reference regarding the aspect of their names along with her mother's brutality when liked together. "I've heard it said that true focus, thus power, lies somewhere between rage and serenity. No doubt your mother understood such principles and disciplines." As he said these words, his hands came together as if offering a prayer, coupled alongside a slight bow of his head, showing his respect and reverence for the weapons and the memory. "However, I always found it odd, the idea of curved hilts forming a saberstaff. It seems less functional than a normal one and rather strange for hand placement. Yet, I expect that any who did master its use held a far deadlier ability than the average variation."

There was a level of understanding that Mariah shared in those words, weapons of war. Each had their own story, like a relic of time, revealing the heart of the crafter at the time of its creation. Yet it delved much deeper than that for her, and perhaps that was where she believed she had failed in the art of her sole standard saber in comparison. Lack of resources, making due with what she had, the need for a hasty creation for survival, thus sacrificing the time she wished she could have spent. It was at that thought that her eyes drifted back down to the twin electrum sabers, which radiated with the simple splendor of their past. She had long shunned the story behind those sabers, until it was too late. Her mournful expression was the only hints to these thoughts, as her eyes remained fixed upon the hilts.
She was grateful, at the very least, that he respected her unspoken wishes and made no motion towards handling them. Another understanding shared between the two. She could only exhale a sigh. It didn't matter how many times she thought it, how many times he mentioned it -- her disbelief never lessened. Only magnified, especially when he spoke of rage and serenity.
"Sounds like one of her sayings..."
Her words were quiet, as if she whispered them more to herself than for his sake. The myriad of her mother's 'wisdom' echoed, repeated over and over in time, ingrained in Mariah's memory. Lessons deemed useless and tossed aside throughout the currents of time, almost forgotten, until now when she stared down the hilts. But why now? Her eyes narrowed at the question, one with an answer she knew, but one she still refused to accept. With it, her attention drifted from the sabers back to Gavin, who appeared to pay his own respects. It was a split moment to snap herself from her thoughts.
Snatching up the hilts, she connected the two at the ends. It was like a vision, seeing her mother's stance, the way she would deftly handle the staff, the way the golden blades danced around her body. A meld of techniques that she made appear so effortless, it was still sure to put anything Mariah had accomplished over the many years to shame. Yet as she held the weapon in her hands, she felt frozen. Even as she was given a chance to handle Kolk Illuminate, a weapon she had never seen or used before, she could at least hypothesize ways of utilizing the blades. Yet she couldn't bring herself to do the same with these weapons, ones that she had seen and experienced the brunt of their essence countless times. With a shaken exhale, Mariah detached the two.
"It is very awkward to handle."
Her agreement may have come; however, there was a sharpness to her words now, her guard rising again. Able to offer nothing more regarding her master or her sabers, Mariah retreated back to her things. Settling the electrum sabers with the rest, she then removed her belt, shedding herself of the knives, and took a seat, cross-legged, on the floor next to them. Her eyes locked on the far wall as if some detrimental fate awaited her should she turn her attention away again.
"The Kiffu Guardians," she mentioned. "Were you among them, with your brother?"
Although the second virtue was the defining shifting point, the last strike which urged her onward, she had still heard all seven listed. In each of those, she could easily see those traits in him, even after a single meeting, as if he walked them, be it from his own experiences or in honor of his brother. No matter the answer that came, however, she hoped it enough time to recover from the unseen strain from discussing her old master. Although she had grown receptive to this apparent lesson laid out for her, there were some things too much, too soon. So why offer the information, why continue this conversation. The bitter questions were met with a whispered answer in her mind, attempting to soothe her strain, yet to no avail. With a few steady breaths, as though she attempted to throw herself into a calm, meditative state, she waited for his answer.

Without warning, she took hold of the sabers and began connecting them after he had spoken of them being awkward to use. And for what little time she spent fiddling with them, it seemed she agreed. Either that, or she didn't wish to try too much. From there came silence as she returned to where her belongings lay, returning what she had to the pile. He couldn't deny that with each moment of silence that came from her after their earlier interaction, he grew curious as to who she was, her family, and the silence she carried. But for now, he remained silent on the matter, only hoping to one day hear what she had to say.
When the subject returned to him and if he was ever apart of the Guardians, Gavin remained silent for a moment, himself. However, it didn't carry the weight like Mariah's as it was more reflection than trying to stay his tongue. Turning to his weapons, he began placing them back into the bag they rested in prior. "Officially, no. I did aid them from time to time on missions and I had taken a role as an instructor within the academy there, but I had other duties that kept me from joining them fully. My adopted daughter and apprentice, Tyra, however, did join up."
Taking hold of his large sword, he moved back to the closet, placing it inside and the bag in front of it. All the attention on his weapons kept her from seeing what lay within the open doors, his coat, and even more, his cloak that had been enhanced with Sith Alchemy to completely seal his presence without him needing to do so himself. Items for another day. Returning to the bed, he took a seat on it as he continued. "She was sixteen when i brought here there to stay. In those early days, my brother, Falcor, asked me my opinion on a few things about being tied to others, opinions on the Force, and if it was time to honor our father's heritage. And so, he chose to revive the Kiffu Guardians under a new purpose. Instead of being guards of a prison world, they would be the guardians of the innocent. They'd venture to worlds ridden by war and they remove them. It didn't matter who was waging the battles, they allied themselves with no one, staying out of the fight aside from defending those caught up in the middle. Kiffu was meant to be a sanctuary and refugee world. My apprentice, despite her age and experience under the academy's lessons, was named second-in-command, if only due to the training she was receiving under me. Against students who were a year or two older, ready to graduate and join the new Guardians, she was was given the role. And it took little time for everyone to accept her as such. I was proud of her and that accomplishment. She stayed with them for decades more until she died in battle."

It was only a matter of a few breaths; Mariah was able to steady those raging thoughts that plagued her mind. When a simple yes or no would have sufficed, her question was answered more fully by Gavin than she had expected. Well, perhaps from another. He carried no qualms with sharing these matters with her, like all the others. At least the additional explanation gave her time to not only relax her mind, but her body seemed to follow soon. Her once rigid, meditative stance shifted with another exhale, her shoulders falling forward slightly. The oddity of it all was that she listened. The names of his adopted daughter, his brother, their stories, Gavin's own laced within the history of the Kiffu Guardians. The denial of his full involvement, though, brought Mariah to purse her lips thoughtfully.
"So the work you do here, it's like a repeat in time, like a memory of the past."
For something that could have been laced with venom, spitting his words back at him, her words instead carried a curious lilt to her tone. As her question rang in the air, her gaze settled back upon him, as if she sought to study him more closely. He asked no questions of her, and only answered hers. As the way of the universe, when one question is answered, more arise in turn. If he left the door wide open, she figured there was no harm in prying. Not like that typically stopped her anyway; however, this conversation was still different from all those she had experienced in the past.
"If you had such a close hand, what duties stopped you from officially joining them? Your ties, opinions on the Force, or...?"
Honor his father's lineage. Her words trailed off, as though something regarding it, yet again, struck a chord in her. She was starting to feel as though she was going insane, constantly on repeat with him. Surely, she was imagining things at this point and simply perpetuating a problem that didn't truly exist in anything but her own mind. With a deep breath to cut off the flow of these thoughts, she didn't reveal much else of her discomfort and simply pushed onward, a shift to the conversation, without expecting an answer. If there was one thing that push it away, something to stop this loop, it was a loss she could never fathom.
"It sounds like it was a noble group of warriors," she found herself murmuring. "Your daughter was surely a force to be reckoned with."
Mariah wasn't one to offer empty condolences, and thus, her words stopped there. She had never met his daughter, and her words were only based off his story, that of a stranger. At least in her mind, she still pushed him out, labeling him as such, even as he shared more of his life with her. However, despite all of this, his words from now and then resonated in her memory. His adopted daughter, the last one he had mentioned, the final loss before he had made his own decision to run.
"I imagine you think of her often."

Gavin gave a tilt of his head as he pondered those first words. He allowed them to mull around there for a few moments as silence resonated faintly between them. Suddenly, there came a faint scoff, one based towards his own inability to realize that connection as his head dropped. When he spoke, there was a slight amusement there, further revealing his feelings on the revelation. "You know what? I believe you might be right about that. I never thought about it before, but perhaps, some aspect of what home felt like remained, drawing me here."
He let his gaze return to her as he offered a half-smile. However, that smile faded when she asked further about his duties that kept him from joining the Guardians as a full member. He dare not speak of his role as a Shadow to her. He knew nothing of her family and how it might have connected, but he couldn't bring himself to talk about it. It was less of something he didn't want to talk about and more towards the secrecy the order held. Even with no others existing to continue that legacy, their work was best left hidden in darkness, be it for an unspoken oath, to keep them hidden should they return, or even the reality that they needed to die and be forgotten. And so, Gavin found his first instance of withholding information, granting her only the slightest of ideas to what he was involved with. "I had other priorities that would sometimes conflict with them."
Despite him giving an answer, however vague it was, she didn't seem to be capable of finishing the question that first took form on her tongue. With a trail of silence of unspoken words finally came a new topic, speaking of Tyra. He gave a nod to both of her responses. "Indeed she was. She took lessons learned from me and found ways to apply them to the Guardians, making them even more capable than they were. She was even capable of standing with me in combat by the end. I would have shown you her saber as well, but currently, it exists with my newest adopted daughter, Anya. She was a descendant of Tyra's, so I felt it belonged with her. But yes, I do think of all of them often." Taking a breath, he closed his eyes. We must always seek to move on from our past, but never should we turn away from it. No matter how much it may hurt to look back and reflect, we must never forget that as long as we remember those that have passed, forever will they live in our hearts and guide us when we lose our way."

A thoughtful hum was the only reaction Mariah had to Gavin's admittance, at least at first. In her own way, she found his revelation amusing. For a man who was so quick to shun her earlier words, following the only path she knew, there were still those subconscious workings that did the same with him. Although their stories, the way they handled their respective pasts, they both seemed to be guided towards the aspects they knew as home.
"It's why I travel," she whispered. "Never settling in one location for long. We were constantly moving about, even when I was a child."
She offered a half shrug to her words. They were simple enough, revealing a part of her life but nothing regarding the secrets she needed to hold. It seemed, however, that she wasn't the only one with secrets to keep. Gavin had been so at ease with each of her questions, sharing details beyond what she requested, all up until this point. Had she the mental strength to delve deeper, she would have. However, their conversation had all but sapped away all of that energy from her. The way her eyes narrowed upon him, she showed him that she recognized this, that he held something back.
That piercing look remained, even as he spoke of Tyra, and then another of her line Anya. With a shake of her head, Mariah turned her gaze away, and with a deep breath, she leaned back, tilting her head to lean against the wall. Closing her eyes, Mariah could hear his final words echoing in her head. The lessons he tried to lace within his explanations brought the upwards twitch of her lips into a wry smile. She allowed a moment of silent to pass as he finished, before she spoke.
"I'm not your student." Her words were frigid, to say the least, if only lessened by her quiet tones. She took in a deep breath, another moment to calm her thoughts. "You have no idea..."
Her eyes opened, and again her gaze returned to him. Still narrowed, still sharp. Again, her words had trailed off. It was best that he, like all other outsiders, didn't know the rest of that sentence. To be guided by those who have passed, the whole reason she was here. Instead, she needed to push the conversation forward, again, deflecting from that which shouldn't be discussed. The only thing she had, though, was another unwanted topic. The lesser of two evils...
"My mother's sabers... They were supposed to be a gift for my apprentice. Perhaps one day, I'll finally rid myself of them."
She attempted to hide the mix of emotions she felt discussing it. Anger, sorrow, disappointment, to name a few. If Gavin looked hard enough, he may have seen it, but even if he did, Mariah tried not to give him the opportunity to poke around in that aspect of her life, even if it was one she wasn't bound from discussing.
"Is Anya here, at the Academy? Or is she off and about with other work?"

In her words, much more became revealed about her. It was true, he knew next to nothing about her, why she was the way she was. True, he might have picked up on a few things and confronted her about them, there was still so much more. This was one such case. Though her wandering might have been tied to the emotions and fear previously discussed, this shed a new light on the matter. Whereas he had established a position as a teacher long ago that took hold of him yet again, she wandered because it was what she knew and was used to. It didn't matter if it was an attempt to keep running or carry on as her family did, it was part of her, her life as a child. He quietly chastised himself for his quick belief in figuring her out. But it made him want to know that much more.
Still, he let the subject pass on with no response. There was no reason for it. Even if he admitted to his lack of knowledge, she already knew it. But what came next caused his eyes to drop and turn his gaze away from her. He had not intended for his words to be like another lecture or lesson. While it may have aligned with her and their previous talk, it was more of a general message, one that he wanted to remind himself of as much as anything, to reaffirm what he believed. Again, words trailed off as Mariah sought to keep herself from telling him any more, feeling that he was already learning too much as it was.
Then came the comment about her sabers. His gaze rose to meet hers, his now softer, seeking understanding. For some reason, he couldn't believe what she said. Was she truly ready to hand off such things to another just in order to be rid of them? That couldn't be true. He'd never be able to part with his own trinkets, at least not without passing them on as he had done with Tyra's lightsaber. It seemed like an act of denial and resentment.
Shaking his head, he could see how things were falling, how much he was stirring within her. Even when he spoke of himself and his own family, friends, and experiences, they all seemed to have an effect on her. Perhaps it was time to leave her be and allow her rest. But another question came to him. "No, she is an Imperial Knight within the First Order. At least, she was the last time I saw her. Its been a couple years." Immediately, he recognized the situation he put himself in with those words. Would she think nothing of them? Would she chastise him for all he had spoken, only to find out he hadn't even spoken to his recent daughter in years? He had allowed her to choose her own path in life and decide on what to do about it. Since then, contact had been little. And now, he couldn't even feel her presence. She wasn't dead, that was for certain. It was more like she was hiding.
Working to push passed the subject, he stood to his feet. "I'm sorry for my previous outburst. It was never my intention to make you uncomfortable or push into your business."

Mariah could see the questions burning within him, those that he didn't ask. The way he quietly chastised himself, the way her own story started to fall into place in his understanding. She knew what she should have felt -- caution, guarded, all wrapped up in that facade of harshness she had built for herself over the years. He had pegged her well enough regarding that. For whatever reason she couldn't put to words, though, that harshness now dissipated, and with a defeated sigh, she turned her attention away from him yet again.
"I'm a shame to her teachings," Mariah explained quietly, followed by a joyless laugh. "A Master Jedi among us... positioned as my own master. I never could get past that." She had no idea why she was sharing this, but the look in his eyes, seeking that understanding, was burned into her memory like an answer. "Regardless, she would want someone to use her sabers. That's why I passed them down to Aria when I found her... when I truly found her again. Just as you passed Tyra's blade to Anya, they belong to her son."
True, he had stirred something deep within her. These old thoughts, buried deep, nearly forgotten. She could hear her pulse beating in her ears, but her deep and steady breaths kept her otherwise relaxed. When he spoke of the time since he had last heard from Anya, though, he may have expected her to scold him again. He had viewed her a hypocrite once today, though, and to scold him on such matters would only confirm that to be the truth.
When he stood to his feet, Mariah tilted her head to the side, watching him carefully. With his apology, she only grew skeptical over him again. "You only have reason to apologize if you plan to betray that little bit of trust you've gained and harm me later with all that was discussed." The faintest hints of a smirk curled at the edges of her lips as she joined him, standing to her feet as well. "It's not like you know enough to cause any real damage anyway." There was a challenging tone in her words, almost playful, or at least what might be close to it for her. With that said, though, something weighed down her expression.
"You're not my student, Gavin," she said, taking a beat to exhale before approaching him, "but my advice either way. You should reach back out to her the next time you can. If there's one thing I regret in my life, it's that I let Aria walk her own path, and I never reached back out to her during that time. She was the only family left to me... and she was gone within a year. Not a day goes by that I don't remember that feeling, that moment when I couldn't sense her presence anymore."
Her eyes never faltered from his now, even as she discussed this final memory with him. She could see that he was preparing to leave, to let her rest. It was already late in the night, and she had nearly forgotten about her travels come morning. No doubt, he as well had his own agenda for the following day. Still, she couldn't let herself be the only one to take something from this organized encounter, even if he didn't know it as such. If there was just a piece of wisdom she could impart before he left, she would.

It came as a surprise that Mariah spoke more about her past, even just a little. So much more revealed in just a few words. The way she felt about her mother, her master and her relation to the Jedi, it made it clear as to the previous intention for the sabers. In the end, she believed that they didn't belong with her and the way she did things, even if they were carried in memory. It was a shame, though. He felt that she could utilize them quite well if she truly opened up to them and what they symbolized. Yet, if she believed they'd best find use in another of the family line, then that was her choice to make.
Taking a breath, he sought for something to say, though nothing really did. What could he say? "I see. Well, I hope they find their way into hands you feel are worthy of them." That was all that he could manage.
Then she spoke of his apology and with it, a word he hadn't expected to hear: trust. Even if it was a tiny bit, it was something and he had no plans to betray it. Giving her a faint smile. "Just a little, huh? Well, I feel privileged to have accomplished that. With the work it took, the last thing I intend to do is betray you, even if it would do little to nothing." He then turned to her fully, closing what little distance may have remained. With that same smile, he nodded, knowing she was right. He needed to find her again if only to speak with her and see how she was doing once more. She was the last bit of family left for him. Though allowed to live her own life, it didn't mean he could still keep in touch with her. "You're right. I'll most certainly do that."
He looked at her for a moment more before moving back to his closet and lifted the bag of weapons. Throwing it over his shoulder, he looked to her once more. "It's getting late. I should let you rest so you can leave on time. Is there anything else you need?"

Mariah only offered a half shrug at the comment he could manage regarding the sabers. Worth. In her eyes, not even she was worthy of having them, yet she still did. Sucking in a deep breath, that was all there was to it. Perhaps one day, her apprentice would return, and perhaps then, she could bestow them upon him. She wouldn't hold her breath for his return, though.
Trust. She couldn't believe that the word managed to escape, and then the way he toyed with it, so clearly throwing back at her the work that it took, she could only roll her eyes. Words were pointless. He could promise on his own life not to betray that, but in the end, she would see how true those words proved. However, the words he tossed back at her brought a lingering question in her mind, one not yet asked. Before she could, he seemed to have made his decision regarding her advice. Words, as useless as they may be, had no harm when it was none of her business. Whether or not he followed through here would be on his own conscious. With a nod of her head, she accepted his answer and let it be.
Gavin gathered his things, and with it, she expected him to make his leave. Yet he still stopped, making sure she had everything she needed. After everything he'd already been through and offered her. The hint of her smile was there and gone, now replaced by her disbelief.
"I think you covered everything," she said, glancing around his room, before adding in a murmur, "and then some." When her crimson gaze met his again, she huffed a sigh. "Answer me this, though. Why put forth so much effort, just to gain that little bit of trust? From a stranger?" Her earlier, unspoken question. At this point, there wasn't any point in denying he had somehow gotten through to her. With that acknowledgement, though, it only opened him up as a whole new enigma she couldn't wrap her head around. "And if you say common courtesy again, you'll be glad you took your weapons with you."

He gave a bit of a laugh as she said he had covered everything and more. But his smile faded slightly as her question came. It wasn't what he expected. But only because of that surprise did that smile fade. He laughed a little about his early comments of common courtesy. He was half tempted to say it again, just to get under her skin, yet decide otherwise. This was an important question, probably the most important asked. Taking a deep breath, he turned to face her fully as his softer smile returned. "Because that's where it all begins. That little spark of trust can either be allowed to die or be fanned into a raging flame. And from that flame...who knows? You find an ally, a friendly rival, a mentor, a student, a friend, or perhaps something even more. But everything beginnings with that little bit of trust when two people decide to let each other, even if just a little bit." Normally, he would have waited for a response, to see how she reacted to his words. But in this moment, he chose to leave her be and let the words simmer in her being. Giving her a small, two-fingered salute, he made his way out of the door.
As the door closed, he allowed himself to look over his shoulder a final time before hiding them away from each. Once she was out of sight, his smile fade as he looked forward. What a day it had turned out to be. Never would he have expected it and it had taken its toll on his mind and spirit. Taking a long and deep breath to center himself, he began making his way towards the training area.

Mariah's eyes narrowed upon Gavin with that final answer. It was straightforward enough of an answer, but it still left the huge piece unresolved, left to stew in her mind alongside with his words. A side of her easily let it be, the part of her she claimed kept her from Chaos all these years. Yet another wanted to push the matter further. With that slight salute, though, he was gone, and the the sound of the door sliding was the last thing Mariah heard before the sound of silence weighed all around her.
"You're a fool, Gavin Phoenix."
Her murmured words broke the quiet and were followed with her sigh. Crossing her arms over her chest, Mariah finally tore her gaze away from the door, and in the silence of the space, she was finally able to settle her mind, reminding herself of the resources he had given her, the preparations she could take before the following morning. She snatched the clothes from the bed as she approached the bathroom, but she had to pause again, his answer still echoing about in her mind. Like past unspoken answers she concluded throughout their conversation, his brought her little comfort, and instead, struck a dissonant chord within.
"...a much greater fool than I had originally thought."
With those final whispered words to herself, she prepared herself to settle in for the night. There was still one person she needed to speak with before the day was done. Now, more than before.

Theranna and Kosrezic made they way about the halls once they had finished their training for the day. They had stopped by to drop of their things and saberstaves before their walk around. As dedicated as they were to their training and getting stronger, they were still people with lives, and even more, girls. Though none of them weren’t anything to shy away from, the pair had heard rumors. Apparently, Theranna and Kosrezic, alongside Elysta, were quite favorable among the younger trainees. Though the human female stuck with Cayne and continued training, the other two typically spent some time each day walking around if only to show themselves off. Who knew? Maybe they’d catch the attention of some of the older students as well.
"You ever think about actually talking with any of the guys instead of just walking around, Kree?"
Kosrezic gave a faint laugh with the shake of her head.
"Now why would we want to do that? It’s much better to just walk around and let them watch us. If a move is going to be made, it’ll from them. Besides, why don’t you go and talk with Gavin."
Theranna gave off a huff as she turned her head, though the red in her cheeks could easily be seen over her gray-blue skin. Even after finding out he was nearly two centuries old, he was still cute. It was going to take more than age to turn her attention away.

Having returned from the training area, Gavin made his way into his chambers. Already having packed the few things he needed, he was already ready to go. All that was left was activating the droid he was working on and heading out.
Looking at the droid in the corner, he took a moment to admire his work. Over the past couple weeks, he had been sparring with the droid, not only to test it and make sure everything was right with it but so it could also analyze him and be capable of copying his fighting style. He had also loaded other things that he had recorded and could add to the databanks. Being as good as it could be, there was no better time than to take it to Luxeria. Activating it, he commanded it to follow him. And with that, he departed his chambers for the landing pads.

Sith Academy - Iridonia. Headmaster's Office.
Standing in front of his desk, leaning back against it, arms folded over his chest, the masked Headmaster simply continued to stare down at the little girl before him. A trophy from the Sith'ari's escapades on Jabiim. While it had felt like a burden at the time, the Sith'ari certainly had an eye for talent. Raising this young whelp had been difficult, but they were now starting to see her potential come forth. The girl before him had gotten into a scuffle with a classmate and ended up crushing the life from him with noting more than a rage filled outburst. While it had been an impressive display for one so young, it was still against the rules here. Killing a fellow classmate outside of the training rooms was simply not allowed. Of course, accidents happen, but they seemed all too frequent with this particular girl. With a weary sigh, Alaric spoke.
Do you have anything to say for yourself, young lady? Killing outside the training rooms is against protocol. Punishable by solitary confinement...you know this. Very well, I might add. And yet, here we are...a Sith must have discipline. A Sith must be in control of their emotions at all times. Loss of control leads to unpredictability. We are not all brawn and no brain. Were you not part of some sort of pet project of the Sith'ari's...
It was at that moment that the door swung open, revealing the darkly clad figure of the Sith'ari himself. A scowled crossed his face. Before allowing Alaric to speak, he was already speaking, his voice dripping with malice.
"Finish that statement...I dare you. I made you Headmaster because Malakaine was incompetent and refused to bend a knee. You, however, saw things for what they were. Question my choices all you want. Teach these students what you will. But DO NOT threaten this child...or it will be your corpse I'll have hung by its entrails and paraded through the city..."
Bowing his head and refusing to meet the Zabrak's gaze, the Headmaster cursed inwardly at himself. He shouldn't have allowed his personal opinions of Viox's schemes cloud his judgement.
Forgive me, my king. I...it won't happen again...
Despite being the headmaster at this Academy, the Sith'ari had acquired great power since his ascension to the Iridonian throne. Regardless of his personal ambitions and opinions, he was not capable of besting him. Cooperation and loyalty to the Sith'ari was the only logical option. While Alaric hung his head, Savage rounded on the girl next.
"You would do well to mind what you've been taught, young one. As useful as you are now, even the most useful of tools break. Push the Headmaster's rules again and he will be the least of your concerns..."

Standing before the Headmaster was nothing new to her. The pale, blonde haired child continued to stare distantly at the floor while being reprimanded for killing another student out of anger. It hadn't been the first time, and it was unlikely to be the last. The arrogance and superiority of some of the other students would be their downfall, at least in her mind. Even at such an age, she detested such things. Having been raised on Iridonia, by a combination of several caretakers, the Sith'ari was nothing more than rumors. The Headmaster was more real than the fabled 'Dark King'. As the Headmaster continued on with his reprimand, her temper flared at being called a pet, but before she could react, the Sith'ari himself barged in. Immediately recoiling like a kicked animal, the Headmaster bowed his head and apologized for his insolence. The dark robed Zabrak was rather imposing. More so than the tales of him had led her to believe. Even so, she watched the events transpire around her. Though, when the Sith'ari rounded on her, she looked up at him defiantly while he threatened her. Unwavering and unafraid of the person before her, she stubbornly refused to break eye contact with the fierce yellow eyes of the Zabrak...

Having finished off with the last training session for a week, Gavin's students headed about their own ways, seeking to relax or continue with their training in some form. Duvrax and Krokaa made their way down the halls, deciding for once to simply walk around the academy and forget training for a day or so. They passed a few students and masters, paying their respects to the masters in bows as they passed. Yet, outside of that, there was no interaction to pas between them and the others.
Eventually, the duo came across a pair of older students, a Zabrak and Iktotchi. As the two Zabraks moved on pass, the oldest Zabrak laughed at them and called out.
"Look at him go. Mr. Big Potential strutting down the halls. Seems more like a pitiful weakling to me."
The Iktotchi nodded.
"Well, what do you expect? When you have a pathetic waste for a teacher, anyone's liable to become worthless. Then again, I don't think he was anything impressive anyway. Just whined like a child because his parents made him think he was worth something."
As the words met Duvrax's ears, the Zabrak came to an immediate halt. There was a moment of hesitation as he took a deep breath, anger filling him up. Just because they were older students, they had the gall to insult not only him but Gavin and his parents? It was something he wouldn't stand for. Turning quickly on his heel, his movements were swift as he approached them. However, he was stopped a few feet away by the hand of his friend on his shoulder.
"Just ignore them, Duvrax. They're just trying to get under your skin so you'll attack them, making them justified in fighting you. It's not worth the effort, nor is it worth getting in trouble with the Headmaster. Just leave it be." It took a few moments but Krokaa was able to feel the tension lessen as Duvrax let himself breath and let himself think clearly. They knew fighting them wasn't worth the risk. They were older students, and for all the training they went through, it was safe to assume they were stronger. All roads led to a no-win scenario.
But that relief was short-lived as the Iktotchi came up and backhanded Krokaa out of the way.
"Back off, whelp. We're not talking to you. So keep out of it unless you want to be punished."
That action alone was all that was needed to break the fragile line of Duvrax's anger. Once the final words left Omda's lips, the Zabrak turned and sent his fist straight into the offender's jaw.
"If anyone is about to receive punishment, it's you." Turning his attention from the Iktotchi that dropped to his knees, trying to regain his composture, Duvrax looked at the other Zabrak. "You don't care who you are or what training you've been through. Insult me, my teacher, my parents, and hit my friend, and I'll show you what pain feels like." Giving off a smirk, Kotro prepared himself, knowing he had drawn the younglings in with relative ease.
At the other end of the academy, Theranna and Kosrezic made their way through the halls as they always did, letting themselves get shown off like normal. But they passed another pair of older students, a male Human and female Devaronian. As the duo passed, the Human gave a whistle aimed at Kosrezic, to which both girls looked back with a playful smirk before moving on.
"Where are you going ladies? I thought we could get better acquainted. Especially you. I mean, that's what you're really here for, for us older students to enjoy ourselves when we get a little pent up. That's what Twi'leks are best for, right?"
The comment was enough to make both girls stop and look back at the older students with disgust. Yet, they said nothing and continued on their way, deciding it was better to ignore him rather than give him any kind of attention.
But the male didn't have any desire to be ignored. Instead, he motioned for his friend to follow as they moved quickly after them.
"Where are you going? I said let's get acquainted. I have some tension I need to work out and you're going to help me." Grabbing Kosrezic from behind, he pushed her over to the wall and pinned her there. "I don't care if you don't want to. What I want, I get."
Theranna began to move in order to help Kosrezic, but before she could make it a step, she felt an arm wrap around her neck as another wrapped around her right arm. A sinister laugh came from the Devaronian female as she pinned herself up against Theranna's back.
"What's the hurry? We should sit back and watch the show. I promise it's quite the event."

It had been a little bit of work, cleaning up the training area as he always did once the students left. He had to make sure it was clear for any others that wished to use it while they were away. That time proved useful for as he stepped out of the area, he sensed the shift in a few of his students. Over the past year, he had connected with them and reached a point where he could feel them no matter where they were. Most times, he sensed the fluctuations of emotions, all usually apart of training. But this time, there was something different about what he felt. Distress, anger, something that wasn't meant to be happening. Four of his students were in trouble. As he let his senses reach out, he could tell that others were present with them.
His connection let him figure out who was in trouble quickly enough as well as it being in two separate locations. Taking a deep breath, he let the Force spread through him as his body seemed to split as he created a Doppelganger of himself. The illusion made its way down the hall to see to Duvrax and Krokaa as his real body went to help the girls. Something about what he felt suggested he might have needed his real body for that one. Moving swiftly, both he and the illusion moved with haste to their destinations.
