The diminutive Jedi Master smiled to herself. "Find yourself a man, woman---or any variation thereof?" She wondered where in that spectrum Z'har would fall given the peculiar nature of his current circumstances. However, that was not a conundrum she really wished to devote her energies to at this point in time. Of higher priority was the welfare of the academy itself, though at the moment most of the padawans ready for that step were involved with their masters on further training.
She quirked an eyebrow at the plans Daz laid out in detail, leaning over the table for a closer look and tracing what appeared to be a line of interior laser cannons. "And you think I'll be creating my own army?" she looked up with a smile, "or that I dislike people?"
Jade didn't actively dislike many people, but she did sometimes feel tired. After all, Jedi Masters are still mortal beings and while they can outlast many others, they still will eventually reach the end of their limits. But, one could not show such things in public. There are appearances to keep up after all.
~~~
The Gand clicked to itself quietly for an amused moment, before reaching over and with surprising care grasping Ashrea's wrist and pulling it away from her hand so the scar was visible.
"Was Ashrea there during the Mandalorian attack?" the Gand finally asked.
Dazbog stroked his beard as Jade went over the plans. He put on an innocent face when the word army came up. He twirled his facial hair around for a bit before clearing his throat.
"Not at all. It's for your own safety. What if someone you don't want there shows up, or attacks? Always best to be on the safe side."
Dazbog quickly changed the subject back to the cottage, as if he knew something he could not speak of.
"Moving on. I'm also thinking of a dragon chamber. I can supply the dragon. With a large hoard of gold....It's not exactly science fiction, but a dragon always improves the resale value. Especially with all the treasure."
Dazbog leaned back in his chair and sighed.
"I'll be honest. One of the reasons I came here was to get your mind off of the Order for a short time. You are a Jedi, but you are still a person. I remember a time when Corellian Jedi used to party. It's good to take your mind off of business every now and again. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow, but other times you have to do what is best for you."
Dazbog smiled the same grandfatherly smile from earlier.
Nala's painted eyebrows arched curiously. "What is your house on Kushiban like, if one may inquire?" she asked, while spearing a bite of something that looked a bit like lettuce, though it had red streaks through its leaves.
The green alien woman chuckled quietly, lekku twitching in amusement. "Strength is a matter of perspective, Tantin. I am no Guardian, rather I serve as the Healer of this Academy."
She took a couple bites of her salad before continuing. "Well, there's Will Son'tir and Kel'Al Raganella, both humans and residents of Corellia for a long time. Serrin Roma used to be a large presence here. She was like me," Tchunn drooped over her shoulder sadly. Nalatua'lin valued the company of other Twi'Leks. "And the halls still feel empty without her. And lastly, Ael Jade, she has not been here as long as the others, but I am told she came at the personal request of Master Roma."
Her voice trailed off as she picked up her glass and took a drink. Replacing it on the table she took a tentative bite of one of the fruit slices on her plate. Noting that Tantin seemed to have attracted the attention of a young one a few tables away in a rather pointed fashion, she drew his attention to that fact, obliquely referring to Von, "Seems you have an admirer?"
She nodded, "Yes, we have extensive gardens." As the furry Kushiban's nose twitched excitedly, she smiled warmly. "I can show you them, or tell you how to find them yourself?" Tantin swallowed his food before speaking, and poked at the remainder of the lettuce on his plate as he spoke."Kushibah is a lot different than other planets. We live in simple houses. A regular room to you is as big as one of the larger houses some of the older families have in our villages. Our rooms are small, mostly. Big enough for us to sleep and a few personal possessions. Some villages have communal areas for sleep." Tantin turned his head as Nala mentioned someone watching them, sniffing the air to try and smell where he went. His ears drooped a bit as he could not find the person. The young Kushiban turned his attention back to Nala as they continued to eat and talk."It must take an awfully long time for a Jedi to become a Master. There are never very many of them around it seems. Most of the Jedi here are learners, like me." Tantin's ears perked up as Nala told him she could show him where the garden was. His fur turned a slight yellow at the tips of his ears and paws, his excitement showing."I would like to go there some time. If I have time when I start my training....I like plants."
*Ashrea resisted at first as the Gand tried to move her hands and expose the scarred skin, she had many more other hidden scars, but they would require more then moving her sleeves to see all of them. She bites her lip and looked down. She shakes her head gently and looks back up at the being across from her. Her let down her guards just enough for him to get a feel of what lay below her surface. She didn't have the most pleasant of pasts.*
No.. I was gone before then.. My scars come from a time i was held captive by a very dark being...
Jade smiled enigmatically as she placed her empty mug back on the table, "Well it wouldn't be the first time something like that has happened." She was thinking most immediately of the time a Sith Lord suddenly shown up on her doorstep on Galantos, complete with minions in tow. It had been quite a situation, though not entirely amusing.
"Undoubtedly a resident dragon would be quite a tourist attraction, but" she glanced over at the Whill, "I thought the word 'hermit' had crossed your lips. I'm fairly sure a hermit would not want to be attracting the attention of passersby in quite such a legendary fashion. Wouldn't you say?"
Dark eyes gazed at him in silence for a moment. She appreciated the effort, although how would a Whill notice something like that anyway? She hadn't really thought about it before, but if she had, she would have thought Whills were way too busy making sure the cogs of the universe remained properly oiled or something like that.
"And I thank you," she replied gravely, "I spent too much time attempting to ignore the other aspects of my personality in simply being "Jedi"---and it didn't work." She didn't know if Dazbog was familiar with the details of her personal life, but she wasn't going to regale him with it anyway.
~~~
The Gand was gentle, but surprisingly firm. That being said, if Ashrea had continued to resist for another couple seconds, Vuur'l would have withdrawn.
"Vuur'l is pleased Ashrea is here," and thereby not still in captivity, however, the alien leaned closer, "wondering if Ashrea needs to talk about it?"
The sentences sounded odd, but so would anything if someone had to use a mechanical apparatus in order to speak a language that was not immediately familiar.
~~~ (some time earlier)
Nala smiled warmly over at Tantin as she finished her salad and washed it down with a drink of ice cold water. "Twi'Leks have some common areas, but, as you say, they are much bigger. I doubt you would feel comfortable there." Maybe the space difference relative to his size was why he seemed so jumpy in the Academy. But it could just as easily be the newness of the experience for him.
"Masters?" she nodded, "Usually that does take some time, though it can vary depending upon circumstances. There are more Knights around than Masters, but then, I think this is often the case. How long have you been a learner? I note that you do not yet carry your own lightsaber," she remarked, t'chunn twitching gently against her right arm, the tip gingerly touching the table top.
The part of her mind that was always engaged in noting things down for future reference filed away the "fur is yellow when speaking of liking for plants--- yellow meaning happy? excited?"
*Ashrea didn't try to pull away much, she was not as jumpy as she used to be and other then the occassional nightmare, was normal as one could be. She smiles a little bit and sighs softly.*
It was several years ago now.. Its not something I am very into talking about even now. I have recovered enough of my old life to be useful as a Jedi, though I haven't tried to remember all of it, some i think i'm much rather forget.
*When he did let go she pushes her sleeves back over her forearms again and bites her lip softly, she tilted her head slightly and looks up at the Gand.*
But not everything is about me... What about you?
She didn't know if Dazbog was familiar with the details of her personal life, but she wasn't going to regale him with it anyway. Dazbog laughed heartily at Jade's misgivings about having a dragon."That is why it would have its own underground cavern. Attention cannot be drawn to something that no one knows about. Unless its us."Dazbog winked jokingly. He pointed a finger at Jade's mug, and the few drops within sank to the bottom, and the cup slowly filled itself back up. He twirled his finger around and the coffee stirred itself, without spoon or other utensil."But again back to the more serious aspect of the conversation....We notice many things, Jade. We tend to stay on Tython because it tends to make things complicated whenever we visit mortals. But sometimes we still like to get out and stretch our toes. That's the saying, right?"Dazbog waved his hand, dismissing whether or not he had gotten the mortal saying right. There were more important things on the table, metaphorically speaking. Of course he would get that saying right, and have to elaborate on it within his mind."If you are not true to yourself, who can you be true to? That's why you never come across a hermit with a dragon under his cottage. It's just impractical!"
Tantin finished his own plate, drinking from his own glass, which contained blue milk. He wiped his mouth on the fur on his arm and licked his paws clean."No, I don't have a lightsaber. My training does not start until tomorrow, from what Master Calix told me. I was told to go out and explore the Temple, and meet new people. I think I've done well. New people can be scary sometimes....even Jedi." Tantin picked up the large cup in both hands and drank the rest of the blue milk in the cup. Setting it back down on the table, he licked his lips. Within a moment the milk mustache was gone, and he was smiling."I studied a bit when I was still on Kushibah, but I have not started my training for real yet. I was on my way to a Temple when the ship crash landed on another planet. Master Calix rescued me and brought me here to be trained." Tantin looked up at Nala with a curious face."How long does it take to become a Knight?"
"When Jedi Seekers found potential in Vuur'l, Gand sent Vuur'l to learn to be a Jedi."
The diminutive alien leaned closer and attempted a conspiratorial whisper that really didn't work out as planned judging from the looks the occupants of the next table over shot at the two of them.
"Vuur'l wishes to see the galaxy," nodding to itself.
~~~
"Oh, people would know," Jade replied airily. "If I had a dragon, I would most definitely fly it. And I expect people would notice something like that."
The thought was amusing, therefore she was amused. She glared at her refilled mug though. Much more and she'd be able to float down the Academy corridors. And while conversing with Dazbog was---entertaining, she had some definite ideas about what was appropriate for Jedi in public, particularly when impressionable Younglings wandered about.
"I believe it is legs that one stretches," Terran sayings weren't her specialty, but she remembered hearing something similar before. Besides, it made sense. So, the Whills resided on Tython. That was something else she'd remember from now on.
"Yes, I can see that it would get complicated. Do you have to file a record on this interaction with your Council or governing body to approve your stint offworld?" it was a casual query, nothing more. The politics of the Whills didn't rank on her list of things to be concerned about as they usually didn't get involved in the workings of the universe down on a practical level. Not visibly anyway.
"Unless the cottage was made of stone or something impervious to fire," she riposted with an arched eyebrow.
~~~ (earlier)
"Perhaps particularly Jedi even?" she replied with a careful wink. Even the Jedi were not all that they seemed at times, for instance when one of them fell to the Dark Side. And being somewhere new would tended to leave one susceptible to indirect intimidation just because one was not in one's own familiar territory. Perhaps Tantin would feel at home here eventually, but for now, she could tell that he was not completely at ease. Though, he was more relaxed than he had been earlier.
A ship crash? He was doing remarkably well for someone who'd recently gone through an experience that couldn't be described as anything less than traumatic. The fact that he was still open-minded and curious about the Jedi was a very good thing in the Healer's opinion. It demonstrated a good mental balance and would come in handy further in his training.
She delicately crossed her silverware on her empty plate, then looked over at Tantin with a faint smile. "You are probably tired of the answers that are not definite, but again that depends on the padawan, the master, and the circumstances. For some, it is fairly smooth progress up through their Trials. Others remain padawans for several years. The fastest way to become a Knight is to kill a Sith Lord, but not many actually are promoted that way. This is due to the danger and imminent threat of death involved. Personally, I would advise you not to seek that out. If it comes to you," she shrugged, "that is the will of the Force, but the archives don't hold records of any who actively sought that path to Knighthood."
Not visibly anyway."Unless the cottage was made of stone or something impervious to fire," she riposted with an arched eyebrow. Dazbog chuckled at Jade described her interest in dragon taming and riding."Not all dragons can fly, my dear. Some walk around on all fours and roam the worlds they call home on foot. Flying isn't everything. Besides, almost all flying dragons have already been slain. Because of the flying. Easier to spot. The flightless dragons were lucky. They know to hide themselves much better than their flying cousins."Dazbog popped some more granola into his mouth and munched on it for a few moments before downing it with a large gulp of coffee. He cleared his throat before continuing. He had a look that was both intrigued and dumbfounded at the same time."Stretch your legs? That sounds barbaric. Didn't mortals used to torture people doing that? I believe it was called a....hmmmmm..."Dazbog scratched his head. His hand moved down to his chin, and he twirled he hairs of his beard around while he tried to remember."A stretcher? No...a 'rack.' That's it. Some kind of ancient device where they stretched the limbs of the person being tortured. Also made them taller. So....I guess there was an upside...."Dazbog ducked down and looked around when Jade mentioned him having authorization or paperwork done to approve his visit to the mortal realm."Why....is someone looking at us? Did they find me?"Dazbog's eyes widened and he looked around in a fit of paranoia, but then stopped. He frowned and sipped his coffe."No. I can visit anytime I want. No paperwork, or dealing with the Tribunal. Besides, I think all of my fellow Whills have gone out hunting dragons. It's not like I'm not doing my job. My job is all of you. It's actually rather fulfilling. Before this I was living in a Star. Rather cozy but a tad bit chilly sometimes."How a star could be chilly, Dazbog did not elaborate on.
I think a Sith would be even more scary than a Jedi. They're evil, right?" As Nala went on to explain one of the quickest ways to become a Jedi Knight, Tantin gulped, his eyes widened, and his fur turned a light shade of gray. He had never thought about killing someone, nor did he want to. He knew Jedi were protectors of the weak and defenseless, but he never imagined himself having to kill anyone."D-do Jedi have to kill? I don't think I could ever kill anyone, no matter what they did."
There were many species of dragons, and they inhabited the legends of many different worlds, but not all of them had wings. So Jade wasn't really surprised by Dazbog's reaction other than it sounded almost like he had personal acquaintance with the creatures. She had never seen an actual dragon, not a flying, fire-breathing one anyway, but she was familiar with dangerous 'pets'---the chief instance of this being the wild vornskr that the Admiral had given her years prior to this occasion.
She finished her coffee and crossed her arms in front of her with a wry grin, "An advantage? Maybe, if one's joints survived. See, the idea was to stretch a person out, and then suddenly snap the bindings so one's bones jolted back into place, most likely destroying the cartilage in the joints. There aren't many stories of survivors of such treatment."
"Haha, no," she chuckled, getting slowly to her feet, as Daz looked around for the Whill Tribunal to manifest themselves out of a thick fog. "But you do have a coffee plantation to see to?" she inquired as she straightened her robes. She picked up the mug as a souvenir, not wishing to offend the Whill over a matter of trifling importance. "A star was cold?" She would have thought it would be...warm.
Heading out, she turned back for a moment and smiled, "Don't hesitate to visit again sometime," she finished the invitation. That way he'd feel like he could come back when he was in need of more conversation or just wanted to meander around in the world of mortals again.
~~~
Nala watched Tantin, noting his shock and nervousness as his giant eyes blinked up at her. She considered for a moment before answering him. "Sith are evil, yes. But they were not always that way, Tantin. By the time Jedi run into Sith Lords, they are usually thoroughly evil and dangerous. But," stormy grey eyes blinked once as she leaned closer to him, "most of them were once people like us, you---and me. They made choices. They made decisions. It is easy to overlook that and see only their destinations, what they are now. Look at Anakin Skywalker. Was he evil?" This was something the Healer had thought about many times in meditation. It was a question that Jedi themselves were split upon. "It is tempting to view the universe as black and white, but in reality it is often a bit more grey. Good people can do bad things. And bad people can do good things."
Her words drifted off as she thought to herself. Giving such an answer to a padawan was not something she would normally do, but something about Tantin told her that he could handle open honesty. Careful subterfuge and ambiguous secrecy had led to misunderstandings within the Order in the past, and Nala attempted to avoid them in her personal life.
Do Jedi have to kill? Tantin's question probed into the crux of the matter. "Not always. Seeking other alternatives is best, but there are times when a Jedi has to make that choice." She smiled at him faintly, "This is not to tell you that you will have to kill, Tantin, but being a Jedi is a life of sacrifice. There are several paths within the Order that one can choose, paths less likely to lead to confrontations of that nature. And I spoke only of a quick way to advance. I would not at all recommend it to you. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone," she finished in a whisper.
~~~
The Gand shrugged, clicking to itself in embarrassment at the compliment and trying to forget it. Where would Vuur'l most like to go? Anywhere.
Dark black eyes blinked once before Vuur'l looked up and replied. "Everywhere, Ashrea. All things."
"What has Ashrea seen?" it inquired in turn, curious.
Dazbog put his hand to his chin and rested his elbow on the table, his coffee mug held in his other hand as he listened to Jade explain the torture device he had mentioned. He nodded his head.
"Well, I'll have to snoop around the Archives for any survivors. My interest has been piqued."
At the mention of his coffee fields, Dazbog checked his right wrist, which had no timepiece on it. He set his mug down and slapped his other hand over his wrist. He rattled his extremity around a bit and then removed his hand, and stuck his still bare wrist to his ear and listened to it.
"My crops are fine, I have other me's tending to them. But if you have other business..."
As Jade began to get up to leave, Dazbog could not help but comment on her cold star quip.
"Not so much cold as much as drafty. Like someone kept opening my windows. The heating bill was huge."
When Jade turned around to welcome him back again, Dazbog bowed his head in respect. As soon as Jade blinked, however, he was gone. The only hint of him being there was his granola, and Jade's now refilled mug of coffee.
*Ashrea smiles at him softly again and tilts her head. And with a playful grin responds to him.*
Now that is alot of things. You will have a full and rich lifetime seeing All the things.
*Her playful grin lessoned as the question was turned to her. She thinks a moment and looks downward a bit, her voice lowering. She rubs her wrists gently and managed not to lose the rest of her composure. Her eyes turn up to him again before her quiet voice whispers to him.*
I've seen just how dark the universe can be... How low its peoples can be, and how those people will treat others...
*Her voice lightened and resumed more of a hardiness and happiness again. Her blue eyes lightened and she relaxed again. A hopeful look on her face.*
...That's why I strive to be a better Jedi, Vuur'l, to bring light to the galaxy. So no one has to see what I've seen.
His fur went to its more natural white color, and he seemed to calm down a bit."I don't like to think anyone is purely evil...but when we were on Felucia there was a Sith attacking the Temple there. I felt him...Maybe Sith aren't all completely bad, but they are definitely nowhere near good..." Tantin seemed to have made up his mind for now. Being young, he still had much to learn about not only the Jedi way, but also of the Sith, the Jedi's eternal enemies. Tantin sighed a bit, his ears twitching as he tried not to think about him having to fight someone."I still don't think I could do it. Even if it was a Sith Lord, or someone who had killed thousands of people. I don't think I could ever take a life. I'd rather help people than hurt them. Violence only causes more violence. Death taints the soul. I read that on a book on Kushibah..." Tantin's large eyes seemed to drift off for a moment, as if finally understanding the meaning of the words he had read back on his home planet. He shook his head, his ears swinging around, his fur puffing out a little more from the sudden movement.."I would not either....Isn't imprisonment a better option? I know Sith can use the Force, so its hard, but aren't there ways to imprison Force Users safely?"
"Maybe," the knobbly alien conceded. The Gand wondered how much Ashrea had seen as the other being did not seem to be very old. But then, Vuur'l did not have much experience gauging the age of human female's based upon appearance. "This is why regardless of the Republic's opinion, the universe will always need the Jedi." Dark eyes conveyed agreement, as the alien climbed to its feet and picked up the empty tray.
"Ashrea's path will probably cross Vuur'l's again soon. Ashrea is a Knight, yes?" the inquiry hung open for a second before the Gand continued. "Vuur'l is only a padawan yet, and a padawan without an assigned master. It may take some time. But, Vurr'l is pleased to have met Ashrea and wishes well."
The alien bowed and trundled off towards the kitchen where empty trays were placed in the correct receptacle for dishes to be collected for washing and sterilization before heading off into the Academy.
"I wouldn't recommend a deep meditation trance with a Sith in one's immediate vicinity," that would be like asking for trouble. Though one probably wouldn't live long enough to truly regret it.
Nala smiled in spite of herself as Tantin's ears twitched. He'd read about death's effect on the soul in a book on Kushibah. She hoped he'd never lose that air of innocent naivete, but she suspected that he would change some during his stint as a padawan. He'd probably change more as a Jedi. But she wouldn't lose the memory of his wide-eyed inquisitiveness upon arriving on Corellia and being surrounded by Jedi for the first time.
"There are ways," she replied musingly, "although they require extreme diligence on the part of those who are doing the imprisoning. Sith will find a way to escape, or cause chaos. It is hard to imprison them safely, and it will get harder over time. While killing is hard, I believe that in some situations, it is better to kill and have done with it, and move on through meditation. This lets the psyche heal. Those who serve as prison wardens ... I wonder if they are the ones truly in prison?" She could have said more. Keeping a live Sith in the vicinity was like hugging a vornskr and hoping one wouldn't get bitten.
Tantin nodded hesitantly in acknowledgement of what Nala said. He could see why capturing and imprisoning a Sith would risk more lives lost, not only in the attempt, but also in the future. But, he still could not imagine himself hurting others.
"My family wanted me to become a Jedi to help people....I wanted to learn to be a Jedi to help others too...."
Tantin did not understand the thoughts on who was really imprisoned. He had never been to a prison, or killed anyone, so he could not grasp the psychological damage it would cause. He could imagine it would be horrible. Even more reason to not kill or hurt anyone. Tantin's fur deepened back to a gray hue as his thoughts went to the future.
"I...I still don't like the idea...But I can accept it. I hope it never comes to something like that, but one never knows what they are capable of until it happens...."
"And so you shall," Nala replied warmly. She would watch his progress with interest and see if he displayed talents that lent themselves to healing. Perhaps the little Kushibah would prefer that as it was in some ways a more sheltered-ish type of calling. Healers saw many things, but within their domain they were not called upon to kill, and perhaps that would make a difference to the young padawan.
She smiled as his fur shifted back to a neutral-seeming grey, lekku twitching gently in alert curiosity. The statuesque woman leaned a bit closer to the Kushiban, "And that Tantin, is what separates you from so many. You already realize how serious it is to be a Jedi. We have to make decisions. And something tells me that you will make the right ones."
In a more light tone, "It's the ones who seem to be all sure of themselves, cocky, that we really have to watch."
