I figured we could do with a thread dedicated to the discussion, sharing, praising and bashing of various books.
So, anyone read anything good recently?

Recently read the Duchess of Malfi. Always good to read such fatalistic work to make the universe seem like an endless frown.
If you mean Star Wars stuff, the last thing I touched was Darth Plagueis. Always liked seeing things from the Sith's perspective.
Also, do comic books count?

Aye, they count. Star Wars stuff is included, but anything good works.
I just finished reading the Paladin of Shadows series by John Ringo. It definitely goes up to the top of the fucked up list. The main character is a former Navy Seal who probably will go down as the least pleasant leading man in history.

DeathlandsFor those of you who dont want to visit the wiki article here is the synopsis On the morning of January 20, 2001 the climax of the Cold War set the post-apocalyptic stage for the series. The end game began with a pre-emptive strike on Washington. Underground nuclear bombs were detonated from within the basement of the Soviet embassy, by an elite group of Spetsnaz operatives, destroying the central command structure and political system of the United States. For an indefinite period of time a nuclear exchange between the United States and the Soviet Union devastated both countries and subsequently the entire planet (but little details are known outside both countries). All manner of genetic contagions were released infecting the survivors of the firestorm with horrible illnesses. The remaining survivors lived harshly during a time of prolonged nuclear winter known as 'Sky Dark'. The geography, climate, and ecosystems of the world had changed dramatically. What was left of the United States came to be known as the Deathlands. 100 years later civilization begins again: brutal, short lived, morally confused and crazed from mutation. Between the many hot spots are small plague pits ruled by power hungry individuals who have no limits in order to establish their rule and expand their influence. These individuals are known as the Barons. Their rabble pits are known as Villes and Baronies. Civilization unknowingly resembles the Dark Ages. Trading resumes between the villes: Jack (a regional currency), Jolt (a hallucinogenic mixture of Mescaline and Heroin) and slaves are the primary forms of currency. Life is a strange mixture of ancient history and limited technology that is scrapped from the 20th century. Military technology is the most prized possession of all; success is often measured by the number of bullets he or she possesses. A man named Ryan Cawdor leads a group of companions across the deathlands. Ryan has extremely secret knowledge of the 20th century. The understanding of hidden underground complexes, known as redoubts, that contains Teleportation technology. He and this companions guard this knowledge with their lives. The technology is called MAT-TRANS. TL;DR Post apocalypse series of books that has a sci-fi element in it I think they are up to 107 in the series and Era I am sure if you read it some of the gun stuff would make you cringe while other parts would deserve a slow clap.

I've heard of that series. Haven't been able to find any if them in the list library though. I recall something about one of the characters using a LeMat to great effect.

The Malazan Book of the Fallen, by Steven Erikson.
It's the best thing ever.

I wouldn't go that far. Good, but not the best thing ever. That title goes to Joe Haldeman's The Forever War. Either that or The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester. Ender's Game is also in the running.

Ender's Game? Card is a homophob. Granted, it's a decent enough series though. I suppose personal proclivities shouldn't have a factor in literature.
I recently finished Cloud Atlas. It is such a deliciously sorrowful novel, especially in regards to the storylines dealing with romance.

Heinlein was a fan of incest and polygamy. Still wrote good books. Phillip K. Dick was completely off his rocker. Still wrote good books. If I cared about all the strange and stupid shit that authors did, I'd never be able to find anything interesting.

Did someone mention Incest! Now all we need is a Zoophile and its the perfect taboo story.
On a more serious note, I know its for a younger audience but the Percy Jackson series is actually pretty decent and its gotten more complex with character development and stuff. In case you dont know about it. Pretty much the Greek Gods are real and they still sire Demi-Gods, it follows a son of Neptune as he does quests and saves the world and stuff.
Day of the Triffids is very dry but I found it a very enjoyable story none the less. Killer plants, plagues, end of the world shit from the point of view of a average Brit.

The Percy Jackson series was good, if a bit too quick of a read for my tastes. Blew threw all five of the books in the main series plus the three that are out for the series after that in about a week back in pre-mob.
Currently reading The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester. His other major novel, The Stars My Destination (Tiger Tiger if you're in the UK) was already one of my favorites. The Demolished Man reads like a modern cyberpunk thriller, despite being 60 years old. It has some of the inevitable trappings of 50's scifi, but it's a tense, slick, and extraordinarily fun read.

Figured I'd share what kind of comic books I've read and even collect on this topic. I'm open to discussion on any of the comics I mention here.
Marvel The Avengers (Including the Dark Avengers and the Uncanny Avengers) Deadpool (I believe I'm not the only one on this site who enjoys these comics) Spider-Man (I can imagine the current Superior Spider-Man arc will be eventually retconned or something big will happen to reverse some of what's going on once the arc is done.) Avengers vs X-Men Spider Island Venom The Infinity Gauntlet Incredible Hulk She-Hulk What if? (Personally, I enjoy comics that go into "What if" scenarios. Like the "What if" issue of the Marvel Civil War. The "What if Gwen Stacy Survived," and among others.)
DC comics Batman (Yes I know all about the recent "death" in the Batman mythos. I'm confident it will be retconned by the next "Crisis" storyline.) Batman Arkham Asylum Batman Arkham City The Killing Joke Red Hood and the Outlaws (Know some have problems with this series, such as a few things concerning Starfire, but so far the comic seems to be ok with me.) Danger Girl Flashpoint Gen 13 Animal Man Justice League of America New 52 (Wonder when the next "Crisis" will show up, bring back the old continuity, and what will they bring from this new continuity into it.) Watchmen Power Girl Young Justice Teen Titians Lobo (I love the Main Man) Transmetropolitan (I can't help but to enjoy seeing an expy of Hunter S Thompson in a future setting, what can I say?)
Image Comics WildC.A.T.s. Cyberforce Gen 13 (Back when it was with this publisher) The Darkness Witchblade (The main comic I get from this publisher. Mostly cause a close friend recommended it to me) Young Blood Magdalena Tomb Raider
Archie Comics Mega Man Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic Universe Sonic X Sonic the Hedgehog/Mega Man: World's Collide (Really enjoying this crossover of Sonic and Mega Man. Especially like how Eggman and Wily interact with one another) Archie (With a few Betty and Veronica. Mainly buy issues that interest me, such as comics showing their new dynamic look and the "What if Archie Marries" comics)
Mirage Comics Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Usagi Yojimbo
Dark Horse (The comic book publisher who currently does Star Wars comics) Star Wars (The recent comic series, just simply called Star Wars) Star Wars Legacy (Including Legacy-War) Star Wars Invasion Star Wars: Agent of the Empire (I like how it's somewhat a James Bond meets Star Wars story) Star Wars: Darth Vader - The Lost Command Star Wars: Darth Vader - The Ghost Prison Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Mostly in Trade paperback) Star Wars: Dark Empire Trilogy Star Wars Omnibus (Getting these to save money. Especially love the Infinities storyline showing "What if" scenarios concerning things that could of turned out different in the original trilogy) Star Wars: The Old Republic comics
Dynamite Comics Vampirella Red Sonja
Other Futurama (By Bongo comics) Adventure Time (By Boom! Studios) Tarot Witch of the Black Rose (By Broadsword Comics) Grimm Fairy Tales (By Zenescope) Lady Death (Her comics tend to change publishers a lot)

Cute.
Start with something easy: The Roaring Girl or Moll Cutpurse Paradise Lost A Philosophical Inquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful
That last one is not a joke. It should open your mind, if you have one -I highly recommend it to anyone.
