*Shili was covered with turu-grass scrublands and valley canopy forests.

"Get the front-line swine on the ground."
And so Sturmbannführer Emono hands a datapad to her executive officer detailing the order of battle for the conquest of Shili. The planetary forces were relatively weak, composed of 10,000 troops spread out throughout the landscape along with a light armor and an aerial support force. According to her Major, this woeful place would surrender once the garrison defending Corvala fell. The citizenry and government was no stranger to collapse and take over. This would be no different, besides the number of bodies it took. What Liza didn't understand was why they had such strict orders to minimize civilian casualties, and not to harm the city proper by any means. That was not the way things should be done, or so she thought. Why risk rebellion from the citizens? It was far safer to level the entire city and continue from there. Regardless of her thoughts on the matter, grand strategy was not within her means. Discipline would compel to simply find the loopholes in the commands and exploit them from there. For instance, why spare the nearby military bases?
"Fire all the V2s and a quarter of the thermobaric missiles on objectives C thru E. That'll be the herald for the panza'shuts-zil."
Liza Emono couldn't pronounce their screwy language, not no way, not no how. And she wasn't about to start. They can keep those throat calls and grunts to themselves, as far as she was concerned.
Drumroll. A shadow over what was about to become the battle plain. The Victory II flies only two kilometers from the terrain, casting darkness upon many who gazed upon it with horror. Already, the Shili Defense Forces were mobilizing, trying to call for help from nearby star systems, and trying to gather what they could from other military bases. Of course, it was already too late once the V2 rockets began to pepper the main garrison set to defend the capital. They buzz out and buzz around from the Star Destroyer, before drifting down to the base, and blowing up a truck, or a squad, or smashing a bunker. A bright sun dots the landscape a few kilometers from the main conflagration: the first of the thermobaric missiles had just completely wasted objective Echo.

Five days later, the remaining forces of the outlying army of Shili surrender. Most of the troops were encircled in impressive tactical maneuvers, although it also could also have something to do with how the invaders had infinitely better equipment, and a Star Destroyer and its compliments providing close, unchallenged air support. Surprisingly enough, the defeated are not executed. Many of the commandos who bested them congratulate them as valiant and honorable fighters, offer medical aide and shelter, and generally have civilians ensure the welfare of the survivors was maintained to an acceptable level.
Casualties for the Panzerschütze regiment had proved badly, below expectations especially for a kommando force. 18 were dead, 42 wounded. No doubt a higher power would be displeased with these results.
Besides, there was still the city of Corvala to conquer. Loyalist forces had taken refuge in the parliament buildings. They would have to be surrounded and destroyed.

Krieg ohne Hass: what a funny concept. Sure, the conquered would be given the same rations and candy that the commanders received, because supposedly there was an honorable way to wage war and the loser was required to nod appreciatively at being the loser.
Naturally, there were always a few sour grapes in the vineyard. It was nothing a firing squad couldn't suppress.
War without hate: what a frightful concept.
Hazelnut spread and jolly ranchers are distributed to the prisoners of war. The defenders of Shili wouldn't need to be pacified with meals laced with gunpowder like the more robust conscripts from Empress Teta. They would embrace the patched quilt of Fascism once they started hearing the messages of unity and courage; they would leap at the chance to be something great. Why not? Shili has been subjected to tortures that would make Korriban blush.

The woman thrown to the corner of the holding cell began to stir- no one who was in this adequately spaced cage could remember when she got there. They all thought she was dead at first when they arrived since she was so still, covered in blood, and it didn't look as if it were hers. Among the seven men and women in the cell, only two looked on as she began to sit up, clutching her head. The woman squinted as the sun light from the window glared in her face. "What are you looking at?" the woman muttered groggily, sensing the prying eyes. The crone closest to the woman scoffed. "Just wondering if you were okay, no need to be rude." "You can wonder without staring," she retorted. "That's rude."
The lone traveler forced herself to stand, using the wall for support. She surveyed the room. 'Where exactly was this?' she thought to herself. The last thing she remembered was sitting in the cockpit of her starship, about to put in the coordinates to... What was that stale taste in her mouth? Grape... Wait a minute. Did it happen again?!
"Where am I?" she asked hurriedly to the man eating some kind of sandwhich. "Tell me! Now!" "Give me a chance to swallow!" the man said, nearly choking. "What do you mean by asking where we are? You know there's a war out there. Hell, you look like you were even a part of it." Tess noticed the tears in her clothes and blood stains on her hands. She gasped when she rolled up her sleeve, revealing the white satin ribbon around her wrist. It also had upon it flecks of brown- dried blood. She dashed to the front of the cell and began shaking the door. "You have the wrong person!" she screamed to whoever was supposed to be guarding the POWs. "Let me out and I'll tell you where she is! I know where to find Tez Bola!"

"Nico Bolas? Wait, you know the location of Bola-"
"She said Tez Bola. Tezzzz-uh. Or did she say Tess?"
"Who the Hell is Tess Bola?"
The guard eating his tasty sandwich exchanges a look of dumbfoundedness with his female superior. They then shrug, and the woman draws closer to the bars, overcompensating for her accent by speaking too loudly and too slowly.
"Hark, Prisoner. What are you saying? Are you thirsty, or hungry? Are you delusional? Do you require medical attention? Are you fishing for a reason to escape from the cell, go on a killing spree with some secret power, and then go on to cause an untold number of murders -of which me and my man here will begin? Speak up!"

The woman cocked an eyebrow at the inept guard and his... superior? Given the dire straits she was in, she felt that she had no time for this unfunny (though she could find it mildly humorous maybe sometime in the future when she wasn't behind bars in a life or death situation) comedy routine. She paused, scanned the soldiers and repeated, "I said you have the wrong person here. I'm not who you think I am- you're looking for Tez Bola. She's the one who was involved in... whatever it is you think I did." Someone guffawed behind her. "Yeah, sure, me too" a man said, scratching at scabs on his arm. "I'm also not the one who knocks grannies for credits to buy Spice." The woman glowered at the man who was clearly lying. He watched her, half expecting to get kicked in the face, and sighed relief when she chose to ignore him instead.
She turned back to the guards. "Listen. I'm not here to kill anyone. I just want my life back. Let me out, and I'll help you find this woman. The more time we waste, the more dangerous things can turn out to be in the end, ok? My name is Tess. I'm sure it's because our names are so similar I was confused as her. I'm also not delusional, or dangerous. I consider myself a victim of happenstance, really. I mean, look where I am now."

There is a loud, wet noise that bought several images of nasty things to mind. What could this be? Why, no less than Mr. Sandwich spitting out a mouthful of sandwich in quite the messy manner.
"Holy crap, Sarge! Look, there's actually a Tez Bola in our roster! According to this she's a female. . .height, weight, eye color. . . Why -she was just added as a 'volunteer' two days ago. Her current unit is marked as the 115th Panzergrenadier Regiment -wha. . . Look at the picture they have on file!"
He holds out the datapad so the noncom can scrutinize it further, and the likeness even causes her to be a bit at a loss.
"Okay, this is against every regulation there is, but this is a boring watch. Even if you start a fight, it'll just be a quick exchange of shotgun fire in close quarters. In this case, I'll be using the shotgun. I'll let you out, but keep in mind that ripping up your guts with buckshot is not something I'll debate. Clear?"
The two guards shrug, equip their shotguns, stand back two paces or so from the gate, and one of them presses a remote control which lets the bar slide open. Tess, or whoever she was, would have to pull open the door herself. These two may have been stupid for letting her out, but they weren't stupid enough to get very close to a range in which they could be pulled in for a quick shiv to the eye.

Tess gripped the cold steel rod of the cell's door and slowly slid it open. "The caution is pretty much unneccessary," she remarked. "Look at me- I'm a mess. I have no weapons and no desire to start trouble." She stepped forward and was about to pull the door shut when a hand shot from behind, dragging her back in to the cell. "She's clearly lying, you idiots!" the scabbed man shouted. He twisted her arm as high up as far up as it could naturally go, making it difficult for an immediate escape. "She's a murderer and a liar and if she goes, I go too! I'll break her arm! I'll break her face! I'll break everyone's faces!" The man was foaming and spitting, obviously suffering from withdrawals. The other residents of the cell looked on in horror, too terrified to help her. They rushed to the farthest ends of the cell, not taking his threats idly. Instead of waiting long enough to see if anyone would step in to help her or wait long enough to see if this drug addict had a concealed sharp object, Tess played the part of her own rescuer. She knocked her head into the man's jaw and felt his grip loosen. She then quickly turned around, and punched him in the same spot her head met his jaw. He landed flat on his back after a swift kick to the shins, and suffered from several violent blows to the face. Tess stopped herself when the hot crimson came in contact with her already bruised knuckles, feeling disgusted about the dirtiness of his blood. She stood up after she wiped her besoiled hands on the prostrate man's shirt to add insult to injury. "Well," she said, turning back to the guards. "Just because I said I didn't want to start trouble doesn't mean it won't find me. Shall we?" She gestured towards the open door theatrically. She then passed through it and slammed it shut with the toe of her boot.

"Just a second."
The woman suddenly advances into the cell area, walks over to the incapacitated prisoner, aims, and...!PBBOUSHHH! Hitting a target from this close was a spectacular event, complete with gore patterns, brain chunks, and maybe a flying eye ball or two. Subtracting any sensationalism, it was actually quite an orderly thing, and far less messy than one would expect. Granted, the initial blast and sound as a shotgun shell practically exploded the defenseless head like a water melon under a sledgehammer strike. Mercifully, there was enough left of the ex-prisoner's teeth and jaw that dental records should be more than able to determine who exactly this man, now splattered ever so subtly across the noncom's boots, was.
By the way. Did anyone mention that nobody knew who he was? It probably wasn't important.
"I just did that in front of him yesterday with another one of the bold types. I don't get it -don't they learn? I mean, if I shoot one person for much less, why wouldn't I kill him for that display. Stupid. Just stupid."
She pumps the shotgun, sending a spent casing all plither-platter across the concrete and steps free from the cage, approaching Tes once again.
"Alrighty then. I'll keep in mind not to get into arm's reach of you. Go on then: what's your plan?"

"Well, this is probably going to end in disaster," Tess thought to herself. She surveyed the reactions of the prisoners- half were too jaded with what happened to themselves to really care what had just transpired with the junkie, and the other half moaned in anguish. Tess found the excessive violence, well, excessive, but in the end, she was basically powerless in the sitution, having only fists in a gun fight. It was also wartime on this planet, and war never changes; as long as there is war, there will always be casualties, there will always be bloodsbed, and there will always be needless violence. Tess brought up her leg to flick off a chunk of brain and thought quickly what the next course of action would be.
"First of all," Tess began, trying to not make it seem as if she was stalling. "Warn me before you do that again, because that damn gun is loud. Second, I need a new uniform, preferably armored, so no one on your side decides to emulate what you did with our ex-friend here. Third, I need a weapon of some sort, and with that I have no preferences. And lastly, what is your name? I don't feel as if we have been properly introduced. If we're going to be working together, I'd like to get a sense of what you're about and fighting for. If you don't mind my inquiry, of course."

There is a moment of severe silence, complete with what appeared to be blank stares and what could be described as moronic blinking.
"!Eee HEE HEE HEE haa ha haa!"
The other guard, Mr. Manwich, shakes his head a few times to bring the point across quite nicely, though he certainly was just a bit shy about it.
"Seriously? Arm you? Put you in a uniform -ANNNND let you out of your cell on top of that? What's next? Should we loan you a ship, fuel, credits, and maybe a company of soldiers to make sure you make it home? Look, I'll admit that there's something screwy going on, but what's not to say that this Tezz person is the real one, the right one, and YOU'RE the one out kill her? Maybe YOU'RE the double, the liar. Hell, do you even know why we put you in prison in the first place?"

Tess stared at the guards, wondering why her inquries were being ignored. She also wondered whether they were being serious or sarcastic. If they were being serious, there could be trouble. Sarcastic, then, damn they were convincing with those guns full of live ammunition.
"If you guys think I'm the liar, or the double, or even the real Tez, then why'd you let me out of the cell?" Tess asked in response to their question.

Tess raised an excellent question: why did they both humor her up until this point? Why not shoot her and simplify things? The answer was extremely odd, and it pretty much stemmed from a place that wouldn't make any type of sense from a person that wasn't connected and trained in the arts of the Force. The sarge searched her mind for anything that made sense, but all she got was something about charisma and a gut feeling about the whole mess.
"I. . . am not exactly sure. The best I can say is that it seems like the right thing to do. Like if I didn't help you, I'd regret it very much. Hell, I'm not even a person really inclined to help others out unless they are a part of my outfit. What can I say?
"You're not mind controlling me or some crap, are you? Cause that would piss me off.
"Well, I guess I might as well make with the introductions. My name is Haelgel Raskavnia, you probably got that latter part from it being stenciled to my chest and all. He's Markus Sorilee, and we seem to be your guests on what will probably turn out to be a deadly and wild quest.
"To put it bluntly." Added Markus.

Glad to be in her former captors' good graces, Tess helped herself to the freshly pressed uniform that was conviently found in the faculty washroom she was led to. She also took advantage of the showers since she didn't know when the next time she would come across running water and soap. After donning the militaristic colors of the faction seemingly running the show at the moment - "Whichever they were," she thought casually - she made sure to fully scrub the the stains encrusted on the satin ribbon wrapped around her wrist. She held the frayed piece of cloth betwixt two fingers, musing on its significance. It represented all the anguish, frustration and confusion in her life, but there was no way she could carry on without it. It if was lost, a piece of her would also be lost. "Funny how something so simplistically beautiful could contain so much pain," she thought. After fixing it back upon her wrist, she gathered the soiled clothes that were strewn upon the floor and made her way outside the facilities where her new comrades awaited her.
"Sorry I took so long," she said, dropping the might-as-well-be-considered-rags into the trash recepticle. "I'm ready to hustle and give the starting coordinates of my first lead. Let's head to the hangar, but before then, can I get my new toy please?"

"I pray to the Goddess you don't mean you want a gun. For logical reasons, the armory is stored away from the prison, about a few kilometers away at HQ. From there they usually send crates of arms. And yes, there is a light armory in here for the guards, but I don't have clearance to access that area. Besides, that would be treason, and we would be killed by the trigger happy privates guarding it."
"It might be easier to just leave and get you a gun at another port."
"Don't be stupid, Mark. Every soldier is quipped with a weapon. It'll be suss to any other guards that aren't our friends. They'll know something is off."
"True. Hey, Tes-tezz. You don't have the Force magic powers or anything like that? Like in that book with the mind control thing where they fool the guards into looking the other way?"
"ARGH! If she did, she would have used it already on us, you kriffing moron. No, we need another solution if we're to get off this rock."

"You know," Tess began. "To make this easier, we can just pretend that I'm a prisoner getting transported to, I don't know, Kessel, and request a gun from the armory. It's rather simple, really. Just hide the weapons you have now in a ruck sack or a provision's case and get new ones." Tess paused and pondered. How could they have explained losing their guns in the first place? Would they give more than two weapons as well as additional ammo? "I guess you guys could say that the ones you had were faulty and regrettably disposed of them incorrectly. If you're willing to take a fall, I guess. But that's putting a lot of faith in me, I understand. Well. You both know I won't try to kill you since I haven't already. So it's up to you."

It appears that the Sargent mulls over the things spoken by the woman which seems stranger and stranger. Tess had an interesting proposal in order to solve the current predicament. Taking her advice, they grab Tess by the arms and proceed to make it look like she was a fresh criminal coming in from some summary sentencing. Whenever another guard walked by and asked about it, they just mentioned she was one of those crazed Inquisitor zealots plaguing the city. This of course garnered a lot of terrible remarks and dirty sayings, many of which were of manners most uncouth.
"Just ignore the assholes. We'll have you free from this garbage soon."

In the commotion of this deception a few sacrifices have to be made. Although following at first from a stance of boredom, Markus grew visibly apprehensive in both expression and outward statements. Fear of the consequences if they were discovered were soon dominating his thought processes. Haelgel was disappointed in both a diplomatic and personal sense: Markus was a raw recruit taken in by this latest invasion and conquest of Shili. Being shunted into the role of POW guard may be something of a career ending shove, but he was relatively sweet about it, and usually hardworking. For the Sargent, the attraction and desire to bring him along had no romantic strings attached -Markus simply reminded her of a dead kid brother. However, it was obvious the kid would snap if pressed.
Before he was separated the kid managed to engineer a pretty damn big distraction. From Haelgel and Tess' perspective, there was of course no way of knowing what he had done, but whatever it was turned out to be big enough to raise the base alarms. As squads of guards thunder to the area of conflict, it leaves a perfect opening into the armory. General protocol allowed the guards to pile in, equip, and get the Hell to the objective. The ladies take advantage of the one nervous private left in vigilance of door -he's just glad not to be alone for a few moments in the drowning blare of red wash warnings.
Minutes later, both women are in an empty hovertruck waiting for the lockdown to finish in order to finalize their escape. Near Tess' side was a sizable suitcase designed to carry weapons -large enough to manage a rifle and sidearm along with ammo, holsters, cleaning kits, and a trio of nonlethal flashbang grenades in case things went south. Haelgel didn't exactly know what her new friend had picked -she was worried about her own weapons and forging a few log books while in there. It could almost be anything at this rate, since the armory was made up of slugthrowers, like the Fascist group liked, along with blasters -including some rare models that would serenely be considered illegal in Republic Space.
Nothing for that, now. It takes about 20 more minutes for the lockdown to cease, and then the Sargent guides their hovertruck out of the compound and into the open road. Once they are a few dozen meters off the ground, Haegel engages the autopilot and sits back, quietly watching the grasslands zip by under the early evening sky.

"You set the coordinates for Corvala, right?" Tess asked once everything was settled. She sat in the passenger seat of the hovercraft and glanced over at the autopilot functions instead of observing the Sargeant's nod of affirmation. "Hey, Markus, can you hand me that case on the floor?" She asked while turning around. "I want to take a look at what we're working with defense wise." Tess took the case from her new friend (or captor, accomplice, etc.) and placed it gingerly on her lap. She undid the clasps and rifled through the weapons that were procured in the confusion. She instinctly took out the handerchief from her breast pocket and began to clean the hand guns with the cleaning polish that she remembered to pilfer.
After about an hour or two of flying past nothing but greenery and wildlife, the hovertruck began to make noises. It sounded as if the engines were failing and a mist of smoke began to enter the interior of the vehicle. "Stop the 'truck before we choke to death, Sarge!" Tess shouted. Before the Sargeant got a chance to disable the autopilot, the truck stopped on its own, the plumes of smoke growing thicker. The passengers all managed to escape safely with their equipment and stood there watching the smoke rise at a temporary loss for words. "Well, this is an inconvience" Tess remarked glumly. "Anyone know how to fix a ship without any tools?" The soldiers shook their heads. "Thought so," Tess said with a twinge of sarcasm. "Well, luckily for us, there was a sign not too far back saying the next town is only a mile further. A town called Saarlan... Let's make our way over before it gets too dark." And with that, they followed the road down to their destined location.
