What is Jedi vs Sith?
Welcome to Jedi vs Sith! We are a post-by-post forum-based role-playing community, centered in the ever expanding Star Wars universe! We roleplay characters of our own design in a sandbox environment (the Jvs Universe). Source material includes official Star Wars canon, as well as the Legends Expanded Universe. Unlike other forum roleplay sites, we do not require a minimum word count for your posts, creating a relaxed writing environment, and, while there are some rules, the vast majority of our site is collaborative fiction combining many writing styles.
How do I join? Does it cost anything?
We are completely free, with a thriving multinational community! How does Jedi vs Sith roleplay work?
Events and actions within the JvS universe are roleplayed post-by-post, with different writers controlling the actions of each character as they interact. Message boards and threads are used to represent different physical locations within the Star Wars galaxy.
Posts containing the thoughts, words, and actions of an in-universe character (or object) are called in-character (IC) posts, and these are differentiated from the out-of-character (OOC) posts of the writer themselves. Explained another way, a distinction is made between the voice of the fictional character (IC) within the JvS universe and the voice of the real life person controlling the character (OOC).
An IC interaction is called a storyline. Storylines can range from completely spontaneous (in reaction to a planned or unplanned IC interaction) or involve degrees of preplanning or scripting (a shared goal, or even a preplanned outcome). Regardless of the level of planning, OOC collaboration is vital. This doesn't mean that you need to reveal your goals and plans, only that communication and sharing of expectations can prevent misunderstandings or disputes.
There are multiple types of characters. The most important distinction is between Player Characters (PC) and Non-Player Characters (NPC). A PC is a main character directly written and controlled by a single writer, while NPCs are the bystander to the lives of each PC. You may chose to control NPCs as companions or adversaries, but their powers should be assumed to be lower than those of a PC.
Influence over locations (a building, a city, or even an entire planet) can be achieved through interactions with other players and with the underlying environment (inhabitants, plants, animals, etc). While there are only a small number of PCs on JvS, the entire rest of the galaxy can be assumed to be populated by an almost infinite number of NPCs, who have their own opinions, motivations, and allegiances. So, gaining control of a location must include those bystanders, not just any PCs present.
It is generally acceptable for your character to begin their life in the JvS universe with limited personal possessions, such as a normal wardrobe of clothes, or as many weapons as they can easily carry, or a small ship or starfighter, or a few droids or personal bodyguards, but larger assets (e.g. capital ships or armies) should be acquired IC.
Storylines can also be written by yourself, for example, to establish backstory or to exert control over an abandoned location. This form of RP is not discouraged, but you will miss out on the fun and unexpected twists that collaboration can bring.
The default mode of storylines on JvS is Open RP, where anything can happen (within the rules), including character death or dismemberment, and anyone who encounters you IC may join the storyline. When players agree to add extra preconditions to a storyline (e.g. no one dies, or limited participants), then that storyline is known as Closed RP. For more information on classifying storylines, click here.
The concept of post-by-post roleplay, and the collaborative fiction it creates, are influenced by other types of roleplaying games (RPGs), including tabletop, computer, console, and massively multiplayer online (MMO) RPG games. OOC interactions and planning take the place of dice rolling or computer algorithms and AIs, while the longhand exposition of scenery and interactions take the place of the game designer (or DM) setting the scene.
The JvS Era/Timeline and the Impact of Episode VII and beyond
Jedi vs Sith has no precise or established date, however, the JvS Universe is set in the Legacy era (c. 50-150 ABY), and based upon the Expanded Universe (now known as Legends) canon. This era is not exact, but only a guideline to set expectations when interacting with other characters.
This era applies only to Open RP in the JvS Universe. You are free (and encouraged) to write any era within a Closed Storyline or within the Journal of the Whills. There is also no restriction on using the "new" canon (Saga) from Episode VII (and following) within a clearly-labeled Closed RP or Journal.
Concepts from the "new" Canon may be used within Open RP in the sense that they may inspire starships, technologies, factions, etc., however, these concepts would be considered non-canon from the perspective of the Legends Expanded Universe, and subject to the same Open RP restrictions as all non-canon technologies or locations.
This policy may be amended if it is abused, or as further details emerge about the new movies.
