Now I understand to an extent why the Sithies are on indefinite hiatus. If I'm being perfectly honest it was never something I really got into because I RP on here as a rule, for fun, above anything else, and not in a competitive way. Under normal circumstances, I would not be suggesting a continuation of the Sithies.
BUT... I actually think it's really really REALLY important that we do it, now, this year, more than ever. Or at the very least we should do something like it, but maybe change it up a bit. And here's why:
- Even if it's mostly temporary, the Sithies bring people back to the site. This boom of activity is more important now than ever before, because activity has been at an all time low this year. I fear skipping it, or just not doing anything like it at all, robs us of an opportunity that at this point we can't afford to pass up to get people on the site and talking. Vets come back to check out the Sithies, and sometimes some of them stick around to RP for a while. We need to keep stimulating activity.
Now, I would volunteer to take it on, but, my leadership skills lack, I do not know if I will have the time, nor do I know anything about the inner workings of the Sithies. But, if we do get something going, I am at least willing to help, if for anything for the sake of getting activity on the site.
I'd like to know people's thoughts.

I know Adrien Draykon was interested in helping organize the next Sithies.

Well, I know me and Jair hashed it out a bit in chat. Discussing some of the pros and cons of the Sithies. It was was on my list of things to post. But basically the last thing we had considered looking at, was an annual birthday bash for JvS in October. Sithies are a giant production that the staff get a load of crap for working on, regardless of result.

I had been working on a proposal for a new awards event but I haven't had a lot of time recently so I haven't made much headway.

Zion and I did indeed talk and I think a birthday bash is a great idea. But ideally we'd want to get a lot of old vets excited about it. What's a good way to do that?

I think the Sithies should be laid to rest and something else done instead. The last Sithie did not garner much attention and, as time has gone on, the heydays of its prominence have diminished, not gradually, but rather abruptly. I do feel that it would be contrary to reviving the Sithies after the community seemed to generally accept that the last Sithie was to be the last Sithie. Let us learn from the Sithies and make something better rather than reviving it is my view on this.
As for getting vets excited, I feel we should focus more on the newcomers instead. They are the true future of JvS, people like Vlusu, Garrick, and Nuit. People who came to this site, jumped on in and we have helped become rooted. Vets are important to the community, but it is the newcomers that are now making up a larger portion of our community.

Jair here. Wrong profile lol
I agree that new people are the most important. I've been talking to Kahul about getting the marketing planning up again for that very reason.

You could do a very watered down Sithie Awards. By that I mean have one only a couple of primary Sithies. Include everyone in the vote?

Well, unfortunately the thing is... we tried that for the last one. Put up voting threads, advertised to high heaven. Got like maybe 10 people in total that voted. And getting nominations was painful. People just did not have time to find someone to nominate, and a few people just did not want to nominate themselves.
Hence why the birthday bash idea would be good, since you could run it this year, and you don’t risk a portion of our community being cussed out by anyone cause they didn’t win an award...

Fair point. Perhaps I remember them more fondly than most. I would support the birthday bash.

I think the sithies started off well but I was never sure they did much for the longevity of JvS. With the moaning and nastiness some people brought to it. Also the growing pressure to compete for epic posts to be considered which is a type of rp that works for some but sometimes a short posting rp can work great and be more fun if you are both online and having a quick back and forth.
Short type of rp has dissolved and I'm not sure it's for the better if we are trying to attract more writers and more interaction.

I think the birthday bash idea is alright but will ultimately fail. I tried a similar thing with the "Smugglers Ball" to get people to write a fun party and perhaps with people that they would otherwise never be able to write with and it was a spectacular failure. I don't mean to sound pessimistic but I feel like the community bit of our site has died and we might just be a bunch of people who come here to post with the few people we talk to and mind our own otherwise. Which isn't a bad thing, you do you, but it's worth at least considering that our efforts here may be for naught.
And maybe it's just me who's out of touch, it's definitely possible but I dunno. I'd like to point to something that happened a couple of months ago as an example. There was an event that happened that a few years ago would have sent ripples throughout JvS, it would have been the number one topic on every JvSer's lips (read fingers) when they came here. It would have been huge. However, now? I heard about it in an offhand comment maybe two weeks ago, if that? And like I said, maybe it's just me being out of touch but I don't think so.

I think with the proper advertising and positioning, a Birthday Bash will be a bit better. Especially if we get a team in it and don’t try have anyone strike out alone. After all, that’s how JvS works best.
We all come here to write with other people. Maybe not large groups enmasse, but definitely together. And if we can get some admin support on this, I think we can do it.

Hmm... I mean, from the looks of it there has been a small spike in activity very recently. I don't think an event of some sort can hurt. It will either fizzle or succeed but a fizzled event is not the end of the world.
I do wonder what changed between two years ago and now. I wasn't really active here two years ago so I can't really compare it.
I also agree with Auri (check out the band of the same name if you haven't). But I think we've improved on this front. While we do tend to post long, still, I feel like the stigma against short posts is gone. Either that, or I just haven't been yelled at yet because I did plop down a couple of two-liners this past week. :P But that stigma is something we definitely want to avoid to attract new people.
About vets and events though, how about one of those open RP days?

We could certainly try run another spontaneous RP day/weekend/event. Just gotta decide on a start day/time and toss out a breadcrumb to send people there.

Maybe we could do a combo Birthday Bash + Spontaneous RP event.

Isn’t that kind of what the party is? >.>
Unless you mean the more OOC party, then an IC event?

I mean, that could work. But wouldn't one distract a little bit from the other? Maybe run them at offset times, so people aren't making a mad scramble to hit up the OOC Party and IC Spont event.

I'm going to throw my two cents worth in about an idea for the IC event...
Imperial Gala. Palpatine was always throwing those, and pretty much everyone has at least one Imperial character.
