There only came a shake of his head as Mariah filled his thoughts with whatever she chose. He might not have seen those thoughts, but he could sense the man's sudden terror. He had to laugh inwardly at how easily she was able to stop him with the thoughts of fear. It made him further desire to utilize his training among these halls if only to ensure none fell so quickly to such weakness.
It wasn't much longer before she finally released her grip, though it didn't come without some quip from her. Fighting to further keep control, he allowed his carefree and cocky nature to slip out despite the seriousness of this task. Of all people, the crimson-haired warrior before him knew what would become if he succumbed to the artifact's influence and is typical mind wouldn't be it. He didn't want to push the buttons, to act this way for the duration of the task, but it was key to keeping his mind in control by somewhat distancing himself from the task itself, much like distracting oneself from pain. As such, he only gave off a faint scoff "Sure."
Bit by bit, they continued on. He could sense Mariah's eyes glancing over at his ship, just as much as the surging light realized it as well. It fought to run, to make him flee, though he didn't He kept his eyes forward and worked to weaken the drive by not acknowledging his ship's existence. Yet, the battle didn't cease in his mind. The power was like a beast in a cage, begging to be set free. At this point, he couldn't tell if it was solely from being connected to him for so long or because of all the dark presence surrounding him. Whatever the reason, it didn't matter. He just had to get to her chambers and rid himself of it. He wanted to stop and rest for a moment and re-establish control. But he could only imagine what Mariah would say or do. Not only that, trying to regain the control he had in the chamber had been cracked and as long as he remained in the temple, doing so would be a drawn-out task.
Still, he raised a hand to the wall as he leaned up against it for a moment, his free hand coming to rest on his head before he shook it and continuing forward. Just a little bit more.

Despite Gavin’s attempt at a cocky exterior, Mariah could still hear the strain in his voice, as though a great weight was physically on his shoulders. Despite the growl that was caught in her throat to his natural yet undesired behavior, she wasn’t naive or blind. He could overcome the stone’s light and power, but like a wild nexu attempting to be tamed, it still wrestled against Gavin's will. Mariah knew it was an unrelenting force, so as Gavin paused for a minute to try to recover himself, Mariah paused in turn, albeit briefly.
“Don’t give out on me now, Phoenix. We’re almost there. Keep moving.”
A faint snarl reverberated in her murmured words. However, the underlying message of recognition and support still resounded loud enough to be a shock. However, stopping to rest any longer would have made him wearier and made the trek more difficult, thus opening up another opportunity for the artifact to wrestle out from under his control again. They had survived a collapsing tunnel and passing by his vessel. It was a miracle that they had made it this far. Soon, she would have it safe in her possession. She wasn’t about to lose him yet, even if it meant swallowing her pride and distrust for a second to urge the man to move forward.
With his next steps, she trailed closely behind, leaving him to set the pace but with her to set the route. The fewer surprises from here on out, the better, for both their sakes.

~ Three Days after the Tunnel Collapse ~The units had been moving smoothly to ensure the caverns were restored to their former glory. From the task itself to the events that led to the collapse, questions had been asked. With unrelenting patience, Mariah uploaded a handful of other reports to address every voiced concern. It was the nature of the beast, and Mariah kept herself poised in every holorecording demanded of her. Soon enough, this event would be over, and this day marked a special occurrence where a particular weight would be lifted off her shoulders. The Empress was alerted to a preparations request for a distinct vessel--a YT-1930, the only one of its kind within the hangar bay. As expected, Gavin Phoenix was finally making his departure from Ambria to return to Iridonia, an act that the Empress offered her blessing to any critical questions. The possibility of students returning with him was enough explanation for her uncharacteristic behavior in graciously allowing a member to venture back to reside in Sith territory. Lurking deeper in the shadows, though, Mariah carried a more solid reason to rid him from this rock. Her half-truths could be executed more efficiently once Gavin was isolated from the idea of interrogation. However, another reason marked Mariah’s decision to stand firm at the foot of the YT-1930’s boarding ramp. Although it was far from a promise, it was still a subconscious push and unspeakable bond that chained her feet to the floor. Leverage--something Mariah had yet to think on and address until this very moment. There was a flurry of movement all around her as personnel prepared and refueled the ship, while others came and went with their excavation in the Canyon, leaving her no quiet time to her thoughts. Mariah concluded that her determination would simply be derived from instinct, which guided her through countless duels, heists, and decisions.Dressed in her typical sparring gear and refusing to adorn something more fitting of an Empress, Mariah stood in an unwavering, balanced stance with her hands behind her back. Her crimson gaze remained locked upon the only way in and out of Temple and into the hangar bay. There, Mariah waited, like a serene statue amidst the chaos which whirled around her.

As the days continued on since he left the Empress's chambers, Gavin had spent most of his time confined to his chambers. While he had allowed himself to sleep for the majority of the time, part of the reason he remained in his room was to not bother Mariah any further for the duration of his stay. It also allowed him plenty of time to think and dwell upon the events of that day and the bits of knowledge he had gained from both Mariah and Aria. It was certainly a lot to take in, but it wasn't some farfetched idea that he could wrap his mind around. If anything, the fact they remotely trusted him with the information was what baffled him. They existed like his secrets, something that he felt didn't need to be said aloud for others to hear. But as they entrusted him with that knowledge, so too did he impart a bit of his.
After three days of waiting, he was certain he was ready to make his trip back to Iridonia. He had been gone long enough. He couldn't;t let his students become complacent in his absence. Having ordered the preparations earlier in the day, it allowed him to finish packing the few things he brought before heading out. Making his way down the halls, he was set with the small bag that held his clothes and cloak while all his weapons were on his person, including the large sword across his back. That was all but two. It wasn't until he got back to his chambers that he had noticed he had left Blockade and Deepstrike behind with Mariah. Yet, he had opted to not bother her in order to gain them, even now deciding to leave them behind.
When he reached the opening to the hangar, he was met with a surprise. Across the way, he could see his ship and the bustle that happened around it as personnel finished getting it ready. But at the foot of the boarding ramp stood the crimson-haired woman. Taking a deep breath, he pressed forward, the sounds of the teams clearing rubble from the catacombs not once diverting his attention. His steps were calm and collected as he made his way up to her, stopping a couple of feet away. "I must say I'm surprised to see you here." For the moment, his tones were somber, his cockiness nowhere to be seen.

"That makes two of us."
Mariah made no movement or revealed any twinge of emotion, even as Gavin approached her. If there was anything that should have caught her off-guard, it was packing away his over-confidence with the rest of things. His tones brought the crimson-haired woman to raise an eyebrow at the man, but it was the only action that disrupted the otherwise calm nature she exuded. Perhaps it was from the busy events of the past several days dissolving her usual sharpness. Maybe it was the relief that he was finally getting off of this rock. No matter the case, though, she still remained unmoving from her place, blocking Gavin from boarding just yet.
"So you're planning on ignoring all of my points regarding the future of your students then. I can't say I'm surprised by your hard-headed attitude, but it isn't too late to change your mind."
There was no softness nor pleading in the Empress' voice. Rather, she spoke with generalized disinterest, as though convincing someone to choose something trivial, like caf over tea. She had already given her blessing over this decision, easing the wary eyes of his colleagues at the Temple. It didn't change the fact that even Mariah held a grudge at the idea of one the Dark Jedi residing under the Sith's rule, though. Nonetheless, she carried herself with a new level of control and poise that was unseen behind closed doors.
"One word and I can have a ship ready within the hour to head to Iridonia to gather those students who wish to join you here for the remainder of their training."

Gavin tilted his head a bit as his free hand rested upon his hip. It was only then as she spoke that first line that the slightest of smirks crossed his face. It was a curious notion to her waiting for him, on that remained a mystery to the both of them. "So what you're saying is you coming here is based on pure impulse? Curious."
He gave knew he had more than enough ammunition in that single line to continue on but elected to reign himself in from his usual nature with her. If this was going to be their good-bye for a time, he didn't want to disrupt it entirely by being his full-on cocky self. For as soon as the smirk and words came, he straightened himself, the smirk fading as he thought on her offer. Even now, it was tempting. He knew he'd rather be here than with the Sith, but knew that for time being, it couldn't be.
Giving a slight sigh, he shook his head. "Tempting, but, unfortunately, I have to return. I know your feelings of the Sith and any who become lost to their dogma. Can't say I blame you. But I've made a commitment to these students, one I won't break. I will train them all the best I can. Once their training with me is completed and the choices are made can I truly bring myself home. It is only then that I'll know that I've done all I can for them. As their teacher, I have have chosen to put myself desires on hold for the sake of them and their needs."

Although Gavin's calm demeanor broke to reveal that overzealous smile, Mariah's lips also twitched upwards into the faintest expression to match. She could see that he was holding back for one unknown reason or another. His expression shifted back to his unusual seriousness, but all the more reason for the crimson-haired woman to speak up.
"Impulse? No," she corrected cooly, tilting her chin upwards in her own display of confidence. "All possible paths brought me to where I stand now. However, now, I stand at a crossroads."
The crimson-haired woman kept her explanation short and cryptic as her dark smile also faded. Even as Gavin's dismissal to her offer rang true, she had already accepted his answer before he said it aloud. As she had pointed out moments ago, he was hard-headed. Mariah expected nothing less from the man who stood before her. Like an unmovable object, though, Mariah remained at the base of his ship's ramp and blocked his entryway to board.
"Very well, then. Understand that I meant it when I said I'll be expecting regular updates to their progress. My eyes are on you, Phoenix, and on them."
It was then that Mariah offered something of an explanation to her earlier words. Moving her hands from behind her back, she revealed the hilt of his two sabers in each. She didn't present them to Gavin yet, though, but instead, she flourished them as though to use them as bargaining chips for some unspoken request. Mariah tilted her head slightly, curiously, with the intensity of her gaze locking upon his piercing blue.
"While your choice may be firm with your students, you still stand at a crossroads as well."

As Mariah began to speak, Gavin couldn't;t help but raise an eyebrow. On this day, despite how reigned back it was, she had seemed to take his attitude in stride as if it didn't bother her or she was seeking to match him, something that further showed through in that faint smirk of her own. Then came the comment of her being at a crossroads. It struck one of the highest chords of curiosity in him, yet he remained quiet as she continued on.
Not even giving him the slightest of fights, either she wasn't going to bother or simply knew that no matter what, his mind was made up and she already knew it. Again, she expressed her expectation of updates to their ever-growing progress, to which she gave a nod accompanied by a soft smile. "Understood. I'll be sure to keep you up to date on their progression, interests, and their possible paths as I establish them."
It was then that she revealed his lightsaber, not offering them to him, but waving them around as if beckoning forth a bargain between them. Once again, she spoke of a crossroads, but this time, one in which he stood. Unable to contain his curiosity, he leaned his head forward as his gaze focused upon her. "Really, now? And what are these crossroads in which the pair of us currently stand?"

Mariah offered nothing more than a faint nod of her head when Gavin agreed to keep her updated on the students' statuses. For the Dark Jedi Order, it remained the highest prerogative for the Fallen Empress. Students, no matter how few, were a necessity to keep the Order strong. They were the new generation of Dark Jedi to rise up and train another new generation. However, when it came to Mariah Shadows as an individual, stripped of her title and rank, the idea of new students carried a deeply rooted, hidden meaning. That much would not be discussed today, though. There was a far more important topic to cover in this short amount of time.
"Don't misunderstand me, Phoenix. We stand at different crossroads. At this present point in time, mine is none of your concern."
Mariah spoke fluidly, the usual edge in her voice dulled, and carefully offered over both Blockade and Deepstrike. However, the crimson-haired woman kept her grasp tight. If Gavin attempted to pry them away from her, it wouldn't be without a fight. She was willing to part with them only if he was proved to be patient enough to wait until she was ready to relinquish them. He had given them to her under exceptional circumstances, after all, and with a precise understanding of their importance. He would never leave them behind.
"She told you of the Guardians, didn't she?"
Mariah seemingly held her own against Gavin's nature at first, but the mention of those people created a sudden gravity to overwhelm the crimson-haired woman in an eerie and unnatural display from her usual sharp wit and fiery words. It was a pressing matter to her, though, and she was silently appreciative that Gavin carried himself to match. She was still prepared for Gavin to make a switch at any moment, though, to take advantage of this unusual moment, and why she still held tightly onto his sabers as though they were her own.

Gavin's head lifted a bit as he gave a thoughtful hum when Mariah spoke that the crossroads in which she stood was neither where he stood, nor his concern. In the end, it was as he suspected her answer to be. She was rarely ever forthcoming about anything regarding herself, requiring a lot of pushing or a dire situation that needed someone else to aid her. Outside of that, she remained a mystery to most, and even in this case, also to him. "Yeah, that's about what I expected." He chuckled a bit and shrugged his shoulders.
She then held out his sabers in a manner suggesting that he could take them. Yet, he made no move to do so. He wasn't so ignorant of her words and actions to know she was just handing them over. There was something more she wanted out of him before he'd be allowed to just take them.
Then came her question in a tone that carried itself with a much more serious tone than normal. His head lowered once more as he looked in her eyes, wondering if she had made a guess or if Aria actually told her. Just because she could guess right didn't mean he would still say anything. Still, as he stood there looking back, something in her eyes suggested that she did know what was said, prompting a silent sigh. "She did."

Mariah knew at this point that there was just something about her that Gavin seemed to find amusing. It was anyone's guess to what. She had managed to sink deep under many others' skins, rousing them to draw their blades against her. She had provoked Jedi to lash out in their emotions, proving the insignificance of their training. However, Gavin seemed wholly unperturbed by her. With his chuckle and offhand comment, Mariah prepared for him to try another one of his stunts, but as his eyes fell to his sabers, the severity of the topic seemed to dawn on him, drawing him back mentally to where she needed him to be.
"Then it wasn't just a dream," Mariah murmured to herself, "but the actual events. I can't say that I'm surprised, but I'll admit that I was hopeful that it was all just another one of her ruses."
Mariah offered a half-shrug of her shoulder, her eyes narrowing as she peered into the blue orbs that found her crimson. With as much confirmed, though, it truly meant that they both had one of the weightiest decisions they could make. Gavin may not have realized just how severe it was, though, so now, Mariah hoped to keep it that way by playing with their future and shifting the outcome.
"If she mentioned as much to you, then you have a duty to yourself, Phoenix. Take your weapons, head back to Iridonia, and wipe your memory of that day, as you offered. Focus on your students and their training, return to Ambria with them, and continue moving into the future you wish to carve for yourself, with no recollection of that day. Do I make myself clear?"
Mariah was neither harsh nor demanding in her tones, despite the words she carefully chose. Instead, her voice seemed almost monotonous and rehearsed to remain calm within the storm of the situation. The crimson-haired woman lowered her gaze from his to look down upon the weapons in her hands and, nudging them towards him, silently requested that he take them and do as instructed.

Gavin listened without moving as Mariah spoke, his eyes not once leaving hers. One would have almost thought that she was speaking with a statue had it not been for the glow in his eyes and the closing fist of his free hand. She had been made aware of what transpired in the canyon in a way that felt surreal, making her wonder if it was but a dream, one she wished had been. Deep inside, it pained him slightly for her to have felt that way, to have desired such a topic never been discussed with him.
But it had and now he truly did find himself at the crossroads she spoke of. He had told the crimson-haired woman that if she desired it, he'd erase his memory of the events that had happened a few days before, even after the talk with Aria when his cloak was enchanted. Yet, he had promised Aria to protect Mariah and those secrets. Sure, by erasing the memories, there would be nothing to protect as no trace would exist within his mind. But with that, the conversation with the sister would be gone as well. Just one memory gone could change the flow of reality for them, a flow that Mariah undoubtedly preferred.
Yet, while he had said if she desired it of him, he would erase his memory, there was something about her words that suggested otherwise. A duty to himself? That spoke more volumes than she might have realized. And with it, after the long moments of silence, he took in a slow, deep breath. "Is that a suggestion or a command? If it's the former, I'm afraid that I can't. I know I told you I would erase those memories if you demanded it, but another promise was made, one I cannot allow myself to fall back on." He didn't know what all she learned and if she would know of that promise made to Aria, but he left his words there. All he could do now was wait for her response.

When Gavin refused to accept his weapons from her, Mariah sighed as a snarling rumble caught within her throat. Any average person should have taken her up on her offer. Some things in the galaxy were better off concealed, especially when each strand, unraveled by knowledge, reconnected itself into an unwanted, fixed future. Mariah was unwilling to reveal more than what was already discussed, though, and desired to keep her explanations as cryptic as possible. They were both better off that way, or so the crimson-haired woman had deemed from the start of this fiasco several days ago.
However, as easy as it would have been to simply command him to follow her command, something was holding back her tongue. It wasn't by her will, but the will of another--the law of many. Such codes could be bent, though, and Mariah wasn't the type to succumb to circumstance and accept a future she didn't agree with. If she had, she would have been dead long ago.
"You told her that you would protect me, but I don't need your protection, Phoenix," Mariah murmured, harshness engulfing her tones like a sudden inferno that she quickly reined back. "Even if you want to continue down that path of your misguided nobility, fine. You don't need your memories of what transpired to continue down that path, though."
Again, Mariah motioned towards the hilts in her hands before lifting her gaze to pierce back into his. Although it was clearer to see conflicting thoughts swarmed her mind, she still held herself with the same composure and dignity expected from her as the Empress, even if she wasn't speaking to him as the Empress, but as a daughter of Shadows.
"I'm not a helpless damsel in distress who needs a knight in shining armor, Phoenix, nor do I have any desire to have one. The sooner that both of you accept this, the better, so again, I'm requesting that you do as I instructed and let go of whatever promise you made. It's forgivable to forsake a duty when the agreement was made with hidden agendas and without full disclosure. She preyed upon you, and you took the bait. Unless you mean to tell me that this means nothing and that your loyalties lie closer to a dead woman you've never met than to yourself."
Mariah narrowed her eyes slightly as she quietly challenged the man before her. If she could simply force his hand and issue the command, the severity of the situation would never need to come to light later. Her hands may have been tied, but she could still convince him to break free from his bindings before he traveled too far down this road.

Gavin simply tilted his head as she spoke, the intensity of her tones becoming clearer with each moment that passed. He said nothing in the entire time her words came, allowing her to express her thoughts on the matter fully. He could even see the conflict that existed within her eyes. What was once an expectation had become a request. She still wished for his memory to be wiped, but now it seemed to be for some other purpose than just not wanting him to know her people's secrets. It was much more personal than that now.
It was when she finished that a softer smile came to his face along with the slightest of shrugs. "Indeed, I did. Misguided or not, that is who I am. And believe me, I know full well you don't need protection. You made that part clear in our duel. But even the strongest need to be watched out for every once and a while and do occasionally require help." He allowed his gaze to stay with her for a moment more before he began to walk past her, slipping around the small opening her had to begin boarding the ramp to his ship. However, he took a only a couple of steps before stopping and turning to her. "And I never agreed to anything. I don't know the full depth of what these Guardians truly are, but it doesn't matter. The promise that was made was something between me and her. She may have hoped for something more, but as it stands, I've only agreed to look out for you. Nothing more and nothing less." His head then dropped a bit as he looked to the ground, a reflection in his eyes as his thoughts drifted to another. "I know all too well the hopes of those closest to you that have passed on. Even when they no longer walk this plane, they continue to hope for your well-being and that you continue to live on." Taking a deep breath, his eyes closed for a moment before returning to her, that same shine residing there still.
He knew Jade wished the same of him, hoping someone could come along that would be there that he could connect to and rely on. Her wish for him was no different than Aria's for Mariah. It was because of this that he had made the promise, to honor the same wishes of his past wife.

On the one hand, Mariah could keep her poise, knowing that Gavin indeed tucked away that cocky confidence he typically showed. At least, it revealed that he could tell that there was something weighty on the crimson-haired woman's shoulders, and he dared not make it worse. On the other hand, Mariah couldn't stand the gentle confidence and certainty that Gavin exuded. He knew absolutely nothing and still held firm with his decision, despite her urgency for him to choose a different path. It was a frustrating ordeal. Further explaining matters to him would solely continue to guide him down the road she attempted to stray him from.
Gavin made a move to squeeze by her to embark, to which Mariah stood absolutely still. She neither moved to block him from boarding nor crumbled in defeat by his actions. It took a beat, though, before she finally lowered her hands, Blockade and Deepstrike now resting on either side of her. Her head tilted to follow him, but her body remained unwavering as though her feet were chained to the ground. As she had mentioned, she was at a crossroads, but it seemed as though Gavin was going to make this difficult decision for her prematurely. Mariah wasn't the type to go down without a battle, though.
"But you have agreed to something," she corrected firmly, although with a quiet voice. Her eyes narrowing upon Gavin, Mariah continued with a hushed fury from the severity of the situation, "Your actions speak for you, and keeping the knowledge of things that shouldn't be known seals your fate. You are playing into her desires by claiming ignorance."
Mariah wouldn't bother addressing his desire to watch out for her, for only the Force knew why, or his reflective speech about those who have passed on and honoring their hopes. Aria had left details out, leaving Gavin to believe that either of them had a choice in this matter. Their decisions were forged by their actions, and Gavin was already far down the path he denied agreeing to walk.
"If you choose to continue on this idiotic quest to protect me and look out for me, then you agree to walk that path she has set for you. If you choose to walk with the knowledge of the relic's existence, the Guardians, a glimpse into our culture, and other secrets of my People, then you agree to walk that path she has set for you. A Guardian isn't a menial title derived from a simple contract of 'yes' or 'no.' It is a bond chosen to be strung together by an Ancestor and formed through the loyalty to my people, reciprocated by our unconditional trust. If you have as much a distaste for it as I, do us both a favor and do as I asked, or board your ship knowing full well the path you've set us both down. I cannot defy the will of my Ancestors, but you are forger of your own future."
Although she kept her voice hushed to avoid another overhearing her, she was hardly fond of talking about such things aloud as it was. This would be the last that Mariah would say of these people and their connections to her own. She made that point clear by lowering her gaze from him to keep her gaze forward, her crimson stare burning into the doorway into the Temple. Faintly, though, she moved her hands behind her back, displaying his weapons for him to take before boarding as her silent 'farewell.'

As Gavin's final words reached her, his gaze watched her motions carefully. The dropping of his sabers to her sides, the tilting of her head to follow him. The conflict still remained in her eyes. What was more was the fact she began to explain that conflict and what it all really meant. It was still all a mystery to him, but by what little she expressed, there was more to everything than was revealed. He never agreed to be a Guardian in the context he felt it meant, but it seemed otherwise. Truth be told, even he wasn't being given a choice and that simply knowing any of the secrets automatically decided that once Aria chose him. It was frustrating, to say the least, and now all of Mariah's words made so much more sense. Neither was being allowed a choice in the matter.
So what did that mean from there? He wasn't about to step away from his promise to Aria to look after Mariah, though the crimson-haired woman made it clear he could continue to do so without the knowledge he had obtained. But that also meant erasing the conversation with her sister would also be gone and the promise would be a faded memory that existed only with the one. Without the remembrance of the promise, he wouldn't live up to that in any regard, something he almost expected Mariah to know. Still, without knowing of this development, she had begun telling him more, if only a bit when she didn't have to. Considering that she expected him to erase his memory, she could and most likely should have kept it all quiet the best she could. But that wasn't the case and he had been entrusted with a small bit of knowledge. As he thought more, even the artifact he had discovered due to being led there by another. All of it had started behind her back.
At a loss of how to truly move forward, there was only one option left. "You know my feelings on the matter of choice. The fact that neither of us was given this option bothers me deeply. To take a simple promise and imply it deeper without truly expressing to me what it entailed nor telling you of the decision sounds almost like every other order that exists. Rules without choice. It is we who are the architects of our actions and we must live with the consequences, whether glorious or tragic. None should have the right to choose a path for us." He gave a sigh before shaking his head. "I made a promise, something I can't simply walk away from. I have have been entrusted with knowledge, something I shouldn't so easily forget. But in respect to you as the one who remains, the one who must bear the burden of your ancestors' choice, I'll give you this option. I will retain the knowledge given to me for a time, no later than before my return. If in that time you don't seek my help in any regard, be it personal or related to your people, I will wipe my memories of what I know and there it will end. Two years should be more than enough time to decide if you wish me to remain as an ally with entrusted secrets, someone you can turn to. Until then, I will lock them all behind mental barriers so they stay protected for any reason. You may be giving me a way out, but it is something determined by your people, so it is to you that I give the choice. Sound good?"
As he finished speaking, he turned fully to her, his eyes fixed upon her to hear her decision. He knew it wasn't what she wanted, but if anything, he gave her the ability to walk away from this through the very request she had given him. For now, they would ride that line between the choice until they knew for sure the path best to walk.

Even as Gavin turned to face her directly, Mariah would not move to meet him and maintained her eye contact, hardened as ever, towards the Temple's entrance. However, the more he spoke, the more that faint expressions revealed themselves on the crimson-haired woman's face. The familiar narrowing of her eyes, as though piercing daggers through the air, displayed her buried rage and frustration. The stiffness of her arms and tightened muscles exposed in her neck exhibited her growing tentativeness and tension. He had called them rules without grasping that it wasn't 'rules' that guided them, but their culture. At least he held an agreement that each action held its consequence. His actions over the days here led him to face the consequences, now intertwined with her culture.
Gavin's answer and his solution did little to ease Mariah's concerns, but as she had vowed, she wouldn't speak another word about these matters. He wished to place a bet on the time spent away, hoping he would strike the jackpot to buy them time. If that was a strategy he wanted to deploy, then such was his decision. Hers was already a variable ripped from her fingers, something she honored while biting her tongue.
Although Mariah had vowed to remain silent, there was the faint dip of her chin in what could only be assumed as a nod. Two years. Two whole years where this would be lurking in the back of her memory. As much as she loathed it, it was the lesser of the only two evils presented, seeing as Gavin would rather fight to become the very thing he clearly despised. At the end of this monstrous period, it would never be her decision--only her request, as it was today. If Gavin remained as idiotically headstrong as he was now, then there was little she could do.
A beat resounded silently before the crimson-haired woman made any kind of distinguishing movement. She closed her eyes and lowered her head, making peace with his decision. He was at a crossroads, something she had brought to his attention, and this was the choice he made.
"Take your weapons and go," she issued, the fire in her tones diminished to glowing embers.
As far as Mariah was concerned, she would do all she could to uphold those particular details to his conditions. In the two years' time, she would refuse his help nor seek it out in any regard. When it came to the relics, she was confident she could perform the next step effortlessly on her own. The only relations the two would need would be the updates on his students. That would be their only contact. Nothing more. Nothing less. In two years, everything could return to the typical, dull drone while she lurked in the shadows.

Gavin watched as silence hung there for only a moment, each word he spoke stirring her deep within, though she chose to stay her tongue regarding it, just as she said. The more time spent addressing the matter, the more it showed what this truly meant to her and how she didn't want it to be. He couldn't;t say he blamed her. If there was ever going to be a time where the walls between them broke down enough where she'd actually accept him as a friend and trust him, this situation only reinforced those walls, making her want to fight back the best she could. Just another reason he hated the idea of a path forced upon you without consent. Rules, culture, traditions, they were all the same to him when they dictated a path one had to take without so much as a single say in the matter.
Eventually, she did speak again, the fire in her tones faint. He then looked down at the sabers she held in her hands. His gaze only sat there for a moment or two before returning to her. "Hold onto them. The pieces used to solidify our deal and the objects to remind you to refuse any help of mine."

Mariah stood there unwavering, even as she felt Gavin's gaze move back and forth from her, to his weapons, then back to her. His answer was less than ideal to her, indicated by a slight scowl that managed to sneak through the cracks of her resolve and disrupt the certainty she had forcibly made peace with. Already, this situation was spiraling, and Gavin's words that she should hold onto them made them feel as though she held onto the blades themselves. For all of Gavin's words, his actions continued to lead her to the conclusion that he wanted to honor Aria's request to the fullest. He wouldn't allow Mariah to rid her mind of the encounter, for every time she laid eyes upon the two hilts, she would be forced to remember what he did for her and thus for her People.
However, it brought to light a particular memory that stirred her. Although Mariah kept her eyes closed and her chin tilted downwards, her brow furrowed as she took in a deep breath to calm the rising uncertainty that swiftly guided her towards wrath more times than not. As she remained otherwise unmoving, besides the rising and fall of her chest with her every breath, the crimson-haired woman finally spoke up, her voice forcibly calm but with accusatory tones laced within.
"You stated you would never leave them behind," she uttered as monotonously as she could manage. "Then that was just a ruse to gain my trust."
Trust--with the word, Mariah's eyes flashed open. Although her fiery gaze blazed into the hangar bay floor at first, she was unable to hold her stare there for long. With a breath, she lifted her gaze to him, her eyes burning with the buried disgust she locked away. She would need to keep them locked away, else risk striking him down where he stood. Although she had accepted his words and actions that day with a grain of salt, Mariah refused to let such a fatal lie slip through the cracks without notice, without some sense of repercussions or answers--not when he wanted to leave here with any knowledge of the things Mariah held close to the chest.
"I assure you," she uttered with a joyless laugh, "your apparent solution will hang over my head until the day you return, Phoenix. I don't need to also be reminded of your unwanted and falsified chivalry, paved through your lies and deceit."

Gavin could the tension and fury welling up within the woman, each step forward never ceasing to end her misery at the situation. To have furthered the deal by tying his weapons to the deal was perhaps a bit much and he simply should have left it at telling her to hold on to them. It certainly didn't add to the matter by making something he valued so much into a bargaining piece.
Still, what was said was said and he couldn't take that back now. All he could do now was keep pressing forward. When she brought up his own statement upon handing them to her, a slight smile came to his face. He said nothing until she had said all she wished before giving the faint shrug. "I'm not leaving them behind." It was all he said on it, knowing Mariah would find more frustration in his words. Perhaps in time, she'd understand the meaning in his words. Leaving them behind suggested abandonment. That was something he'd never do, not unless he was entrusting them to another. While he was entrusting their care to Mariah, it was more than that. By leaving them with her, it was a promise of his return, that he wouldn't;t change his mind and once all had been finished, he'd return to his home with the Dark Jedi.
They also held another meaning, the part that played with their deal. While he wouldn't say it aloud, it was the exchange of something that each of them valued. He possessed secret knowledge about her people and their artifacts. Until such a time came that she either requested his help or he returned, they'd each hold onto something valuable. Once they returned to his hands, either the deal would be fulfilled or they would continue down this path they were placed upon.
Looking at her once more, his smile began that common smirk he carried as he raised his free hand to give her a two-fingered salute as a farewell. Only a few moments passed before he turned and made his way up the ramp, closing it behind him, pausing only to look back to her over his shoulder until she was out of sight. Once the hiss of the ramp was heard, he made his way to the cockpit, dropping his stuff off in his room first. Booting up the systems, it wasn;t long before the ship lifted off the ground and pressed forward out of the hangar bay and into orbit, his destination set for Iridonia.
