The Firebird
Ship Class: Light Freighter
Ship Role: Smuggling Ship
Ship Length: 35.7 Meters
Agility (A): 3
Defensive (D): 2
Offensive (O): 3
Speed (S): 5
Special Gear: 1 (Secret Communications Array)
Description:
The Firebird is a highly customized KS-5700, or 'King Raven'-series of light, armored freighters that are manufactured by Karavin Concern, a small military-industrial conglomerate which also produces several civilian ship models, primarily aimed at fringe markets in the Unknown Regions and Outer Rim.
The small freighter's story is shrouded in secrecy. Intended for use by one of the Forgotten's deep cover operatives, the Firebird has received extensive factory modifications which differentiate it from regular ships of the KS-5700 series. Its engines have been replaced by a custom-built set, which have been designed to enable the Firebird to achieve considerably higher speeds than the standard engines of the mass-produced variant. The end result is an extremely fast ship, likely one of the fastest in its size category in the entire galaxy, although this capability comes with several drawbacks.
In order to lighten the ship as much as possible, a significant amount of armor plating has been replaced with much lighter material, most notably in the rear section of the ship, where structural plating has been removed to create additional storage space for smuggling purposes. Additionally, in order to feed as much power as possible to the ship's powerful engines, the shields and two of the laser cannons have been significantly downrated.
Furthermore, a portion of the ship has been sectioned off and converted into hidden compartments, one to be used as part of its intended owner's cover identity as a smuggler, the other, even more hidden one concealing a highly sophisticated set of communications equipment which allows for long-distance, highly secure communications. The ship also features a well-stocked medbay.
These modifications, along with the installation of a well-stocked, well-equipped armory, in place of the second crew compartment, dramatically reduce the small freighter's available space for passengers, however. And the Firebird suffers from the additional issue of heat management, due to its hull plan not being designed to feature the secondary communications suite and the modified engines. As a result, temperature within the ship will rise significantly during maximum acceleration, making for a very uncomfortable working environment when the ship is travelling at its top speed.
Its armament consists of the standard layout of six laser cannons which are found on all KS-5700 series freighters along with a missile launcher, however the weapon controls utilize a highly customized firmware who's interface would be unfamiliar to most pilots in the galaxy and two of the nose-mounted cannons have been replaced with much weaker blasters.
Aside from these modifications, the Firebird also features highly unique livery, its wings and outermost engine nacelles featuring an arrangement of bright red stripes and the name of the ship has been painted on the sides of the cockpit using highly stylized lettering, also featuring pinups of the Zeltron woman known as Karma Jayne, the co-owner of the ship, on a background sporting an artistic depiction of some kind of avian.
