The dirty brown planet hung in space, a miserable sphere compared to the sweeping vista of the universe at large. Why would anyone want to surrender themselves to the stifling restriction of the ground, when they could always be standing where he could see ancient star die and distant events, some past, some still happening as they unfolded?
"Cordon complete, sir. We have the district he was last sighted in surrounded."
Mardotte's brow furrowed. It would never be as simple as that with Tysabaar. The Sith had shown himself to be capable in the past, as well as ambitious. It suited Mardotte's ends to feed this burgeoning dragon anything, even whole planets, if it meant creating a creature that could embody the spirit of the Empire that other, dissidents would be compelled to follow. Although he had faith in his officers, his equipment and their training, it would be disappointing if he would be taken down quite so easily...
"Alert the crash squad to be on stand-by. He'll try and break through... ", his finger stabbed down at holographic display of the spaceport, "there. Have them wait for him there."

The Captain watched how Tysabaar avoided engaging his marines. He glanced at the chrono, the positions of his soldiers and the gap between the Sith and the shuttle. Seconds melted away as the Sith blasted the hapless soldiers to ash. He had time.
Without diverting his gaze from the unfolding skirmish. "Agerau, detail the situation of Sullust and, importantly, our political position."
Agerau stiffly nodded and took his position on the captain's deck. "My captain, we have the full and uncontested support from the current Imperial governor, Moff Barragon. We have restored the garrison, although their senior military staff has been decimated. Currently, Brigadier Lefebvre is commanding the local planetary defense. Anything else, sir?"
Mardotte let the silence hang for a moment. He was burning buildings to herd the Sith into a trap. He was gambling on a renegade, who he didn't even know would actually survive his trial by fire. "Nothing. Dismissed."

The Captain stood at parade rest, stargazing again, with the holodisplay to his back. They had long lost Tysabaar's signal and although Lefebrve assured him that it was only a matter of time before he had the Sith, Mardotte knew that he wouldn't be one doing the capturing.
"Captain, the Vanguard is at silent action stations."
The Helmsman whispered, in case he broke the quiet spell that had fallen over the bridged. Mardotte nodded. Although it appeared that the Star Destroyer had not been alerted to anything amiss, it's shields lowered and batteries powered down, it would be ready to unleash it's full destructive potential in a moment.
Shuttle 317 on approach. Requesting permission to...
The electronic PA system droned.
"Grant it. I'll be heading to hangar bay to greet the arrivals personally. Ensign, you're in command."
Mardotte swept off the bridge while he rattled off commands, leaving his crew confused in his wake. That shuttle was flagged red - no authorization, no clearance, from a hot spot. Something was seriously amiss. He had even left the ysalamir in its frame...
The hangar opened and the shuttle entered, and settled.
Mardotte adjusted his gloves and straightened his peaked officer's cap while he waited for the landing ramp to lower.

Tysabaar heard the routine landing clearance procedures being rattled off by the pilot in the front cabin. After a few minutes, He felt the ship slow, and finally settle as it docked. He knew his presence must have been expected. Captain Mardotte did not let himself be fooled so easily.
Tysabaar, feeling his pilot's task had been completed, got up from his seat and with a word of thanks crushed his neck with the twitch of a hand.
Opening the hatch that led of the transporter, Tysabaar was greeted by the upright figure of his nemesis.
"My apologies Captain," Tysabaar said with a mocking tone,"I believe I'm late for our appointment. I couldn't help but feel honored by the amount of effort you put in to get me here. Generally though, I'm not really one for grandiose escorts, so I decided to skip the whole entourage."
Tysabaar noticed the large security precautions that had been implemented on the ship. Whether this was general practice or for this special occasion he did not know.

Millions of credits, thousands of lives, spent up to now.
Countless hours of planning, scheming, dreaming. A handful of potential candidates.
Mardotte ruefully smiled. This was a terribly expensive appointment and he knew he might even pay his life for it. Still, he was rather gratified that Tysabaar could appreciate the moment and what the stiff-lipped, crisp-uniformed Captain was staking - his career, his command, his life. A new hope, for the Empire. He let silence hang between the two of them for moment longer before he removed his hat and held it to his side.
"I appreciate your co-operation in coming, Lord Tysabaar."
He spoke slowly, picking out the words carefully and steadily gazed at Tysabaar. He hadn't lost his sardonic edge nor the easy arrogance extruded by how he stood. He had been shot at, burnt and if he was to believe the combat reports, even injured, and still he held himself like he could conquer the galaxy, should the whim possess him. Although, Mardotte knew, the difference between pride and hubris, would be his actual accomplishment.
"I pleased to inform you that order has been returned to Sullust and we are now prepared to progress with the next phase of operations."

"So sorry to interrupt, but I am not aware of any operations. If you would please enlighten me?"
The sith had started to slowly pace, back and forth, while being very intrigued by what his counterpart was saying. What had started as an attempt to capture him had turned into some sort of planed conspiracy. Although Tysabaar had planed to eventually gain the captain's alliance for the fulfillment of his greater ambitions, he had not expected this. Although he knew that this was evidently some or other for of deception, Tysabaar was willing to bide his time for a little longer to see how things panned out.
"Your sudden change in agenda intrigues me, for I know it must be of strategic importance to you. Please clarify."

Ah, so the creature did have ambition, mused Mardotte as he watched him begin to pace the deck, almost akin to a caged panther. Or at the very least, he could temper his helter-skelter bloodlust with naked, almost child-like curiosity. Now that he had his interest though...
"The galaxy is changing and I'm determined to guide it forward to unity."
Mardotte turned slightly away from the prowling Sith Lord to look past the shuttle and out of the hangar bay, beyond the ray shields, at the stars.
"It has been my agenda since the beginning. The Emperor, and the Empire, has fallen. Still, there is a way to forge order out of this chaos."
His focus returned to snap on Tysabaar. Slowly, he stalked forward to the Sith Lord.
"I had faith in you, perhaps as force that the galaxy would learn to fear. To obey." He was close enough to pick out the finer details in Tysabaar's mask - the cracked and damaged metal, the narrow Mandalorian mask, through which he could look up and see the yellow, feral eyes glowing behind. Mardotte Sankt Cyr did not need the external power of the force to give his stare such intensity. He had his own hatred, hardened by a steely resolve.
"All you are is a part of the chaos. You'll never understand."

Tysabaar stood there and watched the captain for a while. The arrogance that radiated from him was almost amusing. Someone who had lost so much of his purpose, his cause, and yet stayed so motivated to complete what he had started must truly have had an iron will. He could really be useful, with a little redirecting. Though he had insulted Tysabaar, the sith understood that someone in his position had to keep convincing others, as well as himself, that he was the better man.
Ignoring Captain Mardotte St Cyr's last remark, Tysabaar acknowledged,"It is true what you say. The galaxy is in chaos. It once again beckons for a new leader. Someone who can direct it, lead it and improve it. But that someone is not you, my dear Captain. Yes, you command a ship, you lead your men and you try to instil order. But there are greater things out there than you and your men, Captain. Things that will seem unexplainable to you. Things that will never be ruled or governed by you. They will mock you and then, once they have shown their disapproval, they will trample over you as if you did not even exist."
"You are a mere mortal, trying to rule gods."

"You, who would presume to be a god, show me, then, what I cannot see."
And Mardotte grinned, showing a flash of triumph that he rarely showed to the galaxy. Smoothly, he replaced his cap, allowing it to settle down to its usual fit. He snapped his heels together but did not give him a senior officer's salute. Not just yet. He was not interested in feeding Tysabaar more praise than he could stomach at one sitting.
It was the truth. Mardotte was a creature of the heavens, but he was no god. Although, he had brought gods to their knees, he'd never be able to rule them. They would always grate and squirm against his grip. Why not let someone who was one of them be the one to grab them? Perhaps, someday, he would find the secret to these so-called god...

Tysabaar did not appreciate Captain Mardotte St Cyr's request. He felt mocked by this request. To present the power of the force as a tool for entertainment was unacceptable. He had know doubt that the Captain knew and believed in the existence of the force. His display thereof then would be of no purpose. Quite to the contrary, it would display gullibility as well as a need to demonstrate power. This was not the case, as Tysabaar had already proven himself.
"Why would I have to do such a thing. You have witnessed the presence of such things countless times in the past. Your request is a mockery. In due time you shall see the presence of such things again, but until that time, the powers bestowed upon me shall not be used in vain."

Mardotte's good nature at seeing his protogé take the first few tentative steps of power and leadership evaporated, leaving behind the impassive and rock-hard Imperial Star Destroyer Captain's face in its place.
"And why would I want you to show me, again, how you can casually snuff of the life of loyal Imperial soldiers? If this is the complete extent of your abilities, I'm afraid that you'll find the galaxy full of petty murderers. You'll be just another one of them."
Once already today he had already stared down death. Twice, and he felt himself teeter toward the malign of unabashed pride himself. Mardotte managed to suppress his second victory grin. No matter how powerful the apprentice Sith Lord was, he was only human, after all. He simultaneously was impossible powerful, yet at the same time, his psyche could be bent like a spoon. But he wasn't about to let himself be carried away by his own success.
Mardotte St Cyr was all about control. He commanded a vast ship. He dictated life and death to planets with his turbolasers. He ordered soldiers, to the death, if that was necessary. He was a man in control. And above all, he controlled himself.
"Come. I'll show you the extent of my power and tell me which one is best suited to restore order to the galaxy."
With that, Mardotte turned on his heel and started to walk back to the bridge.

His self confident nature must have gotten the beter of him again, or he just did not know the capabilities of the force. Captain Mardotte was obviously not very well informed in this subject. Tysabaar did not comment further but followed the captain onto the bridge, wondering what he was about to be shown. He thought it would probably be some sort of military action, exercised with extreme accuracy leaving no margin for error. That being Mardotte's trademark.

Imperial Star Destroyer Vanguard, Bridge"Ah, Lord Tysabaar. You've come just in time. Agereau, you may now commence. Main screen."Agereau stiffly saluted and returned his attention to the bulky handset and issued a terse command. The shutters snapped shut over the Imperial Star Destroyer's external viewports, darkening the bridge slightly and giving a brilliant first-person view of a rosy wooden door."Agent on the ground, inside the governor's office." Agereau whispered for Tysabaar's benefit. What would be happening would be quiet and down, below on the planet...Mardotte closed the channel and turned to look at Tysabaar."It would go down in history that an isolated coup had overthrown the legacy of dictators and returned freedom and rights to all Sullustians. Hien Un will become president of the Sovereignty of Sullust. Later, they'll reach a truce with the local garrison - and it will be absorbed into a new planetary defense force." Mardotte smiled sardonically. "Controlled by the Sullustians for the Sullustians."

"I congratulate you, Captain Mardotte. Your capture of Sullust has come sooner than expected. Yet I doubt you will let the Sullustians rule unchecked? Yes, even freedom is never truly free, for there will always be those who start a revolt."
Tysabaar looked at the Captain through his mask. He thought about what he would do next to accomplish his agenda.
"Now Captain, your exploits cannot be limited to this. What is your next move, because I know there is one,"The sith said carelessly to the captain. He couldn't say that his admiration for the man had grown, but the man's personal value had. This relationship could very well be a profitable one.

"The Sullustians, like ever other civilised race in the galaxy, want order and will enforce order. Who are we to take their right away from them? All I want of them is to supply the navy with ships, personnel and intel - a small price to pay for freedom."
There was a gleam in Mardotte's eye. This was his perfect galaxy and he pooled his power from able and willing volunteers, who would be willing to fight to the death for this ideal. Like Sullust. He crafted the scenario whereby they would learn the value as well as the practical considerations of his vision. Mindless drones were only useful up to a point. And it looked like Tysabaar had grasped this lesson easily enough.
Now though, the Captain was curious. Tysabaar was correct - he had always the next step planned. Although, he found it useful to ask of his subordinates what exactly they thought he was planned. Friends were like enemies - they liked to know what you were up to and it was useful not to let them know.
"If you know that I have a next move in mind, tell me what my next move is, Tysabaar?"

Contemplating for a while, the sith stood and looked into the vast expanse of the galaxy. Finally coming to a conclusion he said,"Being ambitious as you are, after securing the fortifications of Sullust, you would pass your gaze over the surrounding territories and find an adequate target. One that is either unruled or controlled by oppressors . Now that you have a firm hold on a territory already, you can aim at something eye catching than Sullust, something that will make your presence more noticed. I am not sure though, if you will follow this course quite yet . You could take more unclaimed land first, so that you have greater support when the time arrives to make more of an ambitious claim."
Tysabaar returned his gaze onto Captain Mardotte and continued."Yet knowing you... You are not one to shy away from a battle."

Captain Mardotte sat in his command chair and rested his chin on his one fist, listening as Tysabaar described what he might be doing. It was a remarkably accurate portrait he painted of St. Cyr's ambitions. "Well spotted, Lord Tysabaar. I hope that the wait will fuel your desire for combat. Your presence on the battlefield may very well be the deciding factor."He let his attention to float. There was a quiet murmur on the bridge as the controllers handled the traffic to and from the Vanguard. There was a hum running through the deck as the hangar bays closed. The starfighter pickets had been recalled. The bows of the mighty Destroyer was finally turned away from the planet below. "Vanguard ready for hyperspace." "Go."And then they were gone.

From the depths of hyperspace came a trio of warships. They immediately presented not an invasion declaration, but rather a peaceful and mutual diplomatic venture. The Sullustan native government responds wholeheartedly and accepts the delegation from Ses-Trade. While diplomatic ties are being formed, Commander Taelros begins the deployment of Stormtroopers, designated as the Ses-Trade Sullustan Defense Command. The shipyards would be in the hands of Ses-Trade soon and would bring Malvus one step closer to his ultimate goal. The sight of Sullust's impressive shipyards was a sight to see in the meantime from the fleet's viewports.

The fleet continued to linger over Sullust as the negotiations entered their first week. The government of Sullust seemed willing to join, but some party members were being rather stubborn on some points of the treaty that would attach the planet and its shipyards to the Ses-Trade Hegemony. Delegates of the Hegemony continued to show cooperation on their part. All the while this was happening, data was being collected, through secret collaborationist channels, for the usage of Lord Malvus who would need to ensure a more pro-Hegemony government and leaders were in place to ensure Sullust's loyalty and submission.
