The Massassi Arena, located on Yavin 4, was once a great fighting arena created by the Massassi people. The Arena was multi-leveled stone structure, with boxes on the top level at its east and west. A pyramidal altar was to its north, and a gate to its south.

Ruins near the Arena... approximately one year ago...
*The sun was hanging mid-height in the sky, the disk of Yavin Prime blazing orange-red on the horizon, a backdrop for the peaks of distant mountains and nearer, tall-topped trees. In the opposite direction, dominant among the smaller stone ruins that peaked through the forest canopy, the tall, tiered stonework of the Great Temple, home of the Jedi Praxeum.
Here, things were quiet. Even the majority of Yavin IV's usual wildlife avoided this place.
Which was exactly why Dav Man'Sell, Jedi Master, High Council Member, Battlemaster, came to it on this day. This day that was so significant to the Galaxy on a wider scale, would be significant to Yavin in a way that could only be described as personal.*
*He stepped over the fallen bough, plants and twigs breaking beneath his footfall. The Anti-personnel weapon in his hand, he swept the semi-clearing, before moving off. His mind reached out, guided by the connection to the Corruption that his specialised Lightsabers gave him, and he followed that guide.
He could sense it. The Corruption. The Echo. The hideous duplicate of the one person he cared for more than any other. But there was something more too. Another brain. Another mind, and he could assume only that something else had made it to the surface that day, a year ago.
And in all that time they had lived with the Corruption lost in the wild. He had hoped, hoped above everything, that the Echo would just remain hidden and avoid confrontation. It had even passed from his mind for a while. And as soon as he left?
It brought pain and destruction on the innocents living in the now destroyed Settlement Alpha.
Ronan and Ksandra had relocated the other settlements to the Lost City of the Jedi and the Temple of the Blueleaf Cluster.
And the Corruption had claimed a victory for it's cause on their own world.
He moved, gradually, through the underbrush, and had a horrible feeling of just where he was being lead by his telepathic link. He moved closer and closer to it, and closer and closer to a place that he had hoped he'd never visit again.*
~~~~~
It had to come here. Of all the places it could ever hide, it had to choose this one.
*Dav Man'Sell stood, staring at the stone entry-slab before him. It was broken in, opened for the first time in some years. The last time he had come here...*
Tebana confronted her Brother, and we lost a child.
*And now he stood there again, the ominous sensations of the Dark Side of the Force mixed, interwoven, with the hideous abomination that was the mind of the Corruption. He stood here, his own emotions a swirl of conflicting feelings, about to face his most hideous enemy, hiding behind the face of his most beloved ally.
He squeezed the blaster in closer to his shoulder, hunkering down behind the sights, flicking the built in light-source on as he moved forward, and into the dark tunnels.
The Jedi Master swept the chamber, checking high, low. The Dark Side surrounded him, penetrating everything, overwhelming his Jedi senses and his Corruption sense so that he could make very little out from the noise, but he didn't need it to navigate. The corridors of this place, from the deep, fungi filled passages to the wide, bottomless pit and the Bridge that crossed it, to the chambers and catacombs that his last visit had ended in, it was all burnt into his mind. A permanent memory.
And he knew the exact spot he'd find his foe in, too. He could feel it, in his gut. He passed across broken stone and ancient Sith statuette, down crumbled steps and past buried monuments.
And then he stopped. His senses suddenly alert.*
"Please."
*He span, instantly, dropping to one knee. His finger twitched, and a three second burst of swift repeated blue/white blaster bolts illuminated the tunnel, followed by another one second burst.
As the sound of the blasts faded away, Dav came to standing again. He walked, slowly, over to his targets, shining the torch light upon them. A trio of Skreegs lay, twitching, smoking holes in their chests.
And across their heads, just beginning to fade away and die, were the tell-tale blue tendrils of the Corruption. He looked back down the tunnel, in the direction he was headed. Spoke, just loud enough for it to carry.*
"You're going to have to do better than that."
*He set off again, bringing the Y-APW back up again.
Knowing that ahead of him, 'better than that' was an almost definite.*
*The Jedi's voice was far away, but it did indeed carry all the way to its intended listener.. though not by the means he had thought.
The Jedi Order had crafted an "antidote" for the Corruption. It was painful and effective, and though the Jedi Order was supposed to alleviate the pain and suffering of all creatures, the entity had no doubt that they would be quite pleased to know just how excrutiating their antidote was to it. Unfortunately for them, history was, as always, doomed to repeat itself. A cure had already been found, years ago; it had been used to remove the pathogen from its original host. This cure had helped a grand total of two people, actually: Vidalu Na'an and Eliana Shan. The medicine had had two unexpected side effects to boot. One, the Corruption had rapidly become immune to it, using the "cure" to further fuel its fire; two, it had used this newfound adaptation to rid itself completely from Eliana and form its own bodies. Three new entities had risen; only one had survived. This entity would later come to be known simply as "the Guardian." The Jedi Order's "antidote" would not last them for long, and besides, they had to find the Corruption to use it.
It would be difficult to find, however, if it only had miniscule veins hiding beneath the surface. Not enough for it to infect, unless one was foolish enough to linger for too long, but enough to perceive and aid in control. Such it was that the Corruption heard Dav Man'Sell, heard him through the ground, through the rock it had already penetrated. He was already in its lair; he just didn't fully know it yet.*
*And so it was that the Corruption's Second Guardian, crafted from the stolen DNA of Tebana Sor, did not even bat an eye as three of the pathogen's drones were mowed down. They were inconsequential, lookouts who served no purpose; she saw everything in the cave without them, heard it all, felt it. They were nothing but pure resources. The Corruption was learning; the skreegs' bodies would soon break down and be absorbed into the ground, where the tiny veins would carry the material back to the Seeds, back to the roots it was still growing, slowly consuming the planet from the inside out.. one step at a time.
The Corruption would usually try taunting, intimidation tactics, simply to relish in the fear of the doomed individual.. but it knew that this Jedi would not succumb so easily to panic. He was strong, in body, mind, and spirit.. and in the Force. That didn't mean that she couldn't try a different tactic, however..*
Oh, Dav, *she said, letting her voice drop into fully human tones, sounding exactly like the one he loved,* you know I wouldn't give you anything less than the best..
*He was unsurprised, unphased in knowing that it could hear him. His senses were overwhelmed, meaning the little things were just lost in the noise, but he fully expected that, if he put a few blasts into the wall, he'd find a few fine tendrils of glowing blue pathogen inside there, perhaps inhabiting and taking over the flesh and form of the moss and lichen that covered everything down here.
He was also unsurprised by Tebana's voice. At least outwardly. Mentally, he had prepared himself for this day for a long time.*
"Come on then. Show me your best."
*He turned, sweeping the weapon across the corridor to his right, before continuing straight on.*
"Oh yeah, you already have before, and I kicked your arse so thoroughly that every single part of your collective mind screamed all at once, across the entire Galaxy. That's right."
*He moved through the Tunnels. He carried the blasters, and the four Lightsabers - twin Corrupted ones, and his primary ones. The main ones, one of a blade of Green, the other a blade of Cyan, were better weapons - they were, possibly, the two most finely crafted Lightsabers in the Galaxy. One of them had been his, cared for and refined, for seventy five years. The other he had crafted nearly a decade earlier, with sixty years of experience under his belt, shortly after he had completed his retraining and become a Jedi Knight once more.
But the Corrupted ones, originally built by his Dark, Emperor's Hand Persona, and later refined and fitted with Corrupted, living Lambent Crystals... they really stung his enemy of choice. They were simpler weapons, more brute force than finesse, but they really cut deep into the pathogen's flesh.
He reached a set of steps, winding downwards. Stepping onto them, he moved fast, following them down and round, his weapon trained ahead of him, the light splashing across the wall as he circled ever downward. The Jedi reached the bottom, turned right. And within a dozen meters, the corridor opened up...
There, lay the Bridge. The vast open, empty chamber, and the wide bridge across it on which he had battled the Terentatek. He stepped onto it and stopped, the pool of light from his weapon playing on the hole where he had broken the bridge in two to defeat the monster.
It had been bridged over. Clumsily, with chunks of rock and boulders, limited stability. But definitely intelligent in design. And the movement off in the darkness on the other side was clearly his next challenge.
He bought the compact blaster rifle up. Set his sights. Torchlight stabbing out into the darkness
And readied himself as it moved swiftly toward him.*
*Two shapes rushed out of the darkness, into the beam of light cast by the Jedi's weapon, revealing them to be large, bipedal arachnids.. Critokians. The creatures' eyes, normally red, shone with an unnatural blue color, making it fairly obvious that they were under the control of the Corruption. This was to be expected, of course...
The creatures charged forward, easily leaping over the makeshift repairs in the bridge and landing with their arms held up in front of themselves, their tentacle-like fingers writhing and their claws poised to strike when they got within range of the Jedi. A strange whistle came from one of them, and almost immediately, the second leapt almost straight up, aiming to land behind the Jedi while the first kept running right towards him..
A small glimmer could be glimpsed, for just a moment, in the light before it moved on, nearly invisible, silent, with the only sign of its existence being the tiniest, muted blue glow.. like a pair of nearly-dead Monitors hovering just an inch above the ground...*
*Dav's watched the creatures as they leapt across the repairs at him, widening and lowering his stance. He eyed the creature, brow furrowing.*
Critokians. Been a while since I've seen one of those.
*He shifted as the leading one leapt, ignoring, for the moment, the one charging him. Dropping down and back, he opened up, repeating bursts of blue-white, ionized blaster fire shooting from the barrel of his weapon as the leaping creature flew at him. Still in motion, he dropped back onto his behind, then rolled back onto his spine, continuing to pummel the creature's underside as it passed overhead. He kicked off with his feet, swinging them over his head and continuing the roll backwards across his left shoulder. The Jedi's left hand came away from the weapon, right hand holding it one handed as he blasted, and the left pressed into the ground to grant extra momentum out of his backward roll as he went over. His feet hit soil, right first and furthest back, followed by left, completing the roll and bringing him crouched, and facing the same direction. Both feet lay poised on the ball and toes, heels up - the left knee was low, down by the left hand where it lay still pressed against the dirt, whilst the right knee was high, a handful of centimetres from his chest. His left side was angled slightly forward towards the charging Critokian, and his right side angled slightly back, head turned to look back over that right shoulder, APW pointed behind him and still tracking the now landing Critokian that had passed overhead.
He snapped his head back around to forward, seeing the other Critokian, now a few seconds away from barrelling into him. He sprung, strong legs pushing hard in unison, flinging himself forward and right, which would lead him into a diving leap out past the Critokian's left shoulder. As he did so, he also twisted, left elbow leading that arm and shoulder back, right arm and shoulder coming underneath himself to snap the APW around and through, allowing him to squeeze off a handful of shots at the second Critokian's side as it's charge lead it past him. As he landed, this time right shoulder leading, he rolled across his shoulders again, coming through having reversed his original direction and now facing the entrance he had passed through, and the second Critokian's back. Again, his left hand pressed into the dirt, working in tandem with his legs to give him a low, sturdy, balanced pose, the Anti-Personnel Sub-repeater thrust out at them both at full arms length and lifted so he could peer down the sights.*
*The first Critokian landed and stumbled, its legs giving out; the amount of blaster fire it had taken had weakened it considerably, but it wasn't out for the count just yet. It hurriedly tried to get back on its feet, pushing itself up with its two forearms, while the second Critokian came to a halt, digging its right foot into the ground and pivoting, its momentum carrying it another meter before it finally stopped, facing the Jedi once more. It had swiped at him with its claws, it had missed, and it had taken a pair of shots to the side of its head. It let out a howl of pain and frustration, then charged forward again, leaving its compatriot to recover on its own.
The Jedi was no longer focused on the bridge behind him, only the two beasts before him, and with the weapon pointed away, the strange glimmer could no longer be seen. The creature that had cast it moved forward, silent along the ground, moving rapidly towards the crouching Jedi. And when the second Critokian bellowed and rushed the Jedi, the near-invisible crystal snake lunged...*
*Dav frowned, watching as the two creatures both recovered. He eyed the closest, least injured one, giving it a quick assessment.*
They're tough. Very very tough. However, every species has a weak point...
*In a matter of seconds, he observed the movements in it's body and large, over sized head. He took a calming breath, finding his focus again. As soon as that Critokia charged, Dav, leapt, The Force driving his legs and his leap. He propelled up into the sky, squeezed off a pair of shots aimed for the creature's upper left 'shoulder' joint from the blaster, still held one handed as his other hand was used to counter balance the jump. Continuing the leap, he swept through a high, arching long-flip, so that he was upside down when directly above it, his eyes and the sights of his Blaster trained ever on the creature. The Force wrapping around him, into him, enhancing his sight, his focus, and his aim, in exactly the same fashion as it had enhanced Luke Skywalker's on that historic day 49 years earlier, when a pair of Proton Torpedoes destroyed the Death Star. The Force pouring into Dav had but one focus. One instantaneous moment.
Dav squeezed off a single shot, aimed straight, and with remarkable accuracy considering the nature of the opposing directions the two combatants were moving in, for what he had surmised was one of the orifices the Critokian used for respiration. If he had guessed correctly, the shot would likely penetrate inside, delivering the weapon's slightly ionised blast straight to the lung and, if he was lucky, the Corruption inside the beast's circulatory system.
Dav, however, wasn't done yet. As the leaping arch came back down, his free hand swept down as well, grabbing up one of the Lightsabers attached to the back of his belt (made easier by his leaping motion sweeping his coat out of the way for him), and on landing, right in front of the struggling husk of the other creature, the Lightsaber leapt to life, his hand sweeping up and backwards, bringing the purple blade in a slash that would pass straight up from bottom to top through the 'head' section of the already severely wounded creature.*
*Dav's shot flew straight and true, striking the Critokian in one of its breathing holes. The creature let out another howl, started to try to turn, then was suddenly knocked back as if struck by an invisible mallet. A very, very large invisible mallet. The arachnid shrieked and spasmed, twitching wildly as the ionized blast coursed through its Corrupted body.
The creature was down, but not entirely out. It was in agony, but it wasn't dead.. yet. Its comrade, however, barely had time to register the fact that the Jedi was in front of it before its vision suddenly split in two; it fell in two pieces, pieces that still clawed weakly in front of themselves. The Critokian's complex nervous system might have allowed it to survive for a few minutes more, even bisected as it was, but within a few seconds the movement stopped and the blue glow of its now-separated eyes grew cold. The Corrupted lightsaber was still an effective weapon against the entity's minions..
The crystal snake had missed its prey, and it now lay in wait once more by the twitching body of the still-living Critokian. The arachnid was trying to push itself up, but was failing; the Corruption knew that Dav Man'Sell would not allow the beast to survive, so when he came over to deal the finishing blow, the crystal snake would lunge once more, and this time perhaps it would hit its mark.*
*Dav swept his extended Left Arm forward and under, sending the Lightsaber tumbling under-itself, end-under-end, across the space between him and the surviving Critokian. Barely a second and a half had passed since bisecting the other beast - this was, simply, the quickest route to victory.
The Blade flew, with sharp accuracy of years of experience with such attacks, aiming to pierce the Critokian straight through the eye and bury itself deep within the beast's head.*
*The blade, like the blaster fire before it, struck true, impaling the Critokian. The beast shuddered violently, then fell still.
It seemed that the Jedi wasn't going to make the snake's life easy; it actually had to chase down its prey. Which is exactly what it did, slithering out and rushing the Jedi, glimmering slightly in the light cast by the exposed portion of the lightsaber blade before disappearing into the dark again, only to reemerge in the torchlight from the light repeater weapon. It was close enough now, so it reared back and launched itself forward for one final lunge, hoping this time to hit its mark...*
*Dav, a slight tug with the Force, drew the Lightsaber back towards him telekinetically, shutting off the purple blade as he did so. The pool of light cut out, but just for a moment there was -*
What was that.
*His eyes snapped down, finding the pool of light of his weapon. His gaze darted away again, half a foot, before coming back. He'd almost missed -
- the Crystal Snake launched. Dav rolled his right shoulder back, drawing his Y-APW out of the way and starting a turn. He twitched, twisted, flexed the Force -
- the Lightsaber leapt to life again mid-flight, spinning to go from flying at him pommel on into a spinning, end-around-end slice -
- the snakes fangs gleamed in the violet glow of the blade -
- a brief flash. Lightsaber making impact -
- Dav snatched the weapon out of the air, shutting it off again as he turned, as the now decapitated Crystal Snake's body impacted harmlessly against his chest, and its head rolled off somewhere to join the bisected Critokian.
Dav shone the torchlight on the serpents body. It twitched, the glow of blue inside it's stump of a neck fading.
He lifted the blaster again as he reattached his Saber to his belt. Shone it ahead of him, a quick sweep. And then, the Jedi Master carried on, moving across the improvised bridge repairs. He stopped only long enough to turn around, and empty three or four dozen shots into the repairs, blowing them apart and collapsing them away into the darkness, leaving the bridge halved and impassible once more.*
*She hadn't expected them to take him down. Take him by surprise, maybe by a fraction. Put him off his guard, not even a chance. This was Dav Man'Sell, the Hated One, the one Jedi the Corruption would fear.. if it knew what fear was.*
You've dealt with the preliminaries. But you came seeking the real challenge, didn't you, Jedi?
<< I'm waiting.
*He half-smiled in response, but the smile was lacking all levity. The Jedi moved now into the tunnels. Followed, step for step, the same route he had taken last time he had come hear, years ago. Felt a twinge of something from that day. A memory? An echo? He wasn't sure.
Didn't matter.*
And I'm coming.
*He moved swiftly now. He knew that the second Guardian, the Sword of the Corruption, would not send anything else against him. It knew he could best anything.
Anything, except, perhaps a Guardian.
It was the one challenge of the Corruption's that he hadn't yet faced.*
~~~~~
*He ran into the room, his Lightsabers flashing to life. He stopped, staring at her. Collapsed. Impaled. Dying.
The next thing he knew, he was at her side, his hands wrapped around her head, holding her to his chest. And he cried.*
"Please Tebana. Please. You have to be alright. I love you."
*His voice faded to a whisper.*
"I love you."
~~~~~
*As he first stepped into the room, it looked almost identical as it had, all those years earlier. The day Tebana had been brutally attacked by her twisted Brother. The day that Eran Sor had killed their child, and become a Sith.
There was even a dark stain on the stonework, where her blood had once pooled from the wound in her gut.
As his weapon-mounted torch swept in, it's pool of light spilled across it, though, he saw something else there. A single blue tendril. Like it was a root, dipping into water to feed.
His weapon swept up and across, gripped two handed. Followed the tendril as it met with others. Dozens. Hundreds. He could already see the blue glow in his peripheral vision. Already knew what he was about to see. His knuckles went white as he set his jaw, swallowed, and gripped the weapon ever tighter.
A Seed.
Here, on Yavin IV. The Corruption had a seed.*
"Magnificent, isn't it?"
*She stepped out from behind the Seed, one palm placed against the massive entity, a touch that seemed almost loving in nature. The Seed was pulsing steadily, bands of deep blue traveling down the length of its tendrils, into the floor and the walls, then slowly traversing back the way they came.*
"We've been here for a while now, Dav Man'Sell. We've been waiting. I've been waiting."
*The Seed began to glow more brightly now, the whole chamber starting to light up with the sickly color that was the pathogen's signature. A smile could be seen on her face, framed by that evil blue.*
"What took you so long, I wonder?"
*Dav watched as that face, that voice that was supposed to mean so much to him, stepped from the shadows of the Seed. He felt that momentary response. That leap in his gut. But that was it. He had prepared for this moment, spent weeks, months, thinking on it. Steeling himself, ready to face this moment.
Inside, for that moment though, it still felt like a star had gone nova.
He looked away from her... it.... whatever. Looked back to the seed.*
"Sorry, I had other things to deal with. Lives to save."
"Oh, how very noble of you."
*She chuckled, keeping her hand on the Seed, its strength continuing to flow into her, through her.*
"You couldn't save them from me, though."
*She smirked, the blue in her eyes lighting up.*
"Their screams.. their pain.. They thought that they were safe, you see, so they didn't expect any harm to come to them. And yet it did, I did, and they all fell.. quite literally, in some cases." *She laughed again.* "You really should have been there, just to watch.. It was so very enjoyable."
*As she spoke, his face hardened. His cheeks sunken in, a sobriety coming over him. His lips grew thin, his teeth clenching beneath them. A cold, hard eyed stare focused on the seed.
Dav had read the report. Every name. He had known some of those people. Knew their faces. Their voices.
Some of them had been kids. All of them had been innocent.*
"You should have left them alone, you know."
*She scoffed at that and shook her head, smirking arrogantly at the Jedi before her.*
"Who are you to say what I should have done? Who are you to decide what should or should not be? If anything, you should have been there to protect them. But you weren't. You left their fate in my hands, and I did what I was meant to do.
"You have no one to blame but yourself, Dav. Their fate was in my hands, but their deaths are on yours."
*He looked at her now. Eyes hard.*
"You know that wont work on me. You could have left them well alone. You could have gone into the wild. Kept your head down. You could have lived, peacefully, without any trouble. Without having to suffer any more retribution from us."
*Dav's eyes narrowed. He was done with talking now. He was so very much done. His right hand tightened around the grip, finger moving to firing position. His left hand tightened it's grip on the front of the weapon, supporting it there.*
"What happens now is your own fault."
*His head snapped around, his eyes shot to the gun-sights of the Y-APW again, and fired. Depressed the trigger, and didn't let go. The blasts fired, repeating, cycling over and over, pumping bursts of ionised blaster fire into the Seed.*
